This song is by Bach and it was written to be played on a pipe organ. But, you don't have one of those so you'll have to make do with the piano.

👉 READ THIS BEFORE CORRECTING ME:
(First, I want to apologize to anyone who just wanted to learn a cute piano riff. I didn't anticipate the disruption these nerds are causing. The fact that you're still here tells me you're a special person. As such, I want to let you know about my "Learn Piano in 5 Days" course, which you can get here: bit.ly/3YKle7w )
    Dear music theory nerds,
Yes, I know it's traditionally played A-G-A (white-white-white) at the beginning. But, I can't find any scholarly argument for why that's the ONLY right way, and the burden of proof is on you to show I'm wrong.
(You also have the burden of convincing me the argument is worth having. So far, you're doing a piss-poor job of that.)
You guys all play the chord progression Dm A7 Dm. I have no problem with that. I, however, am playing A A7 Dm. I have no problem with that either.
I have a master's degree in piano, which means I know more than almost all of you.
A few other points I want to make:
👉 Everyone who insists the G is unambiguously written as a natural (white key) is lying.
👉 There's no surviving manuscript of this piece in J.S. Bach's handwriting, so we don't even know what he wrote.
👉 C.P.E. Bach said it's cool to play mordents non-diatonically (black key), and he's the Son of God.
👉 The oldest manuscript we have (written out by Johannes Ringk, NOT Bach) doesn't have a natural sign and is thus ambiguous.
👉 Contrary to what one commenter said, the trill later on in the piece doesn't have a flat sign (this was presented as proof Bach would have written a sharp sign if he'd wanted one). Nice try, though. Bet you didn't think I'd check.
👉 I don't care how it was played in Disney's Fantasia.
👉 I don't care how your grandfather played it.
👉 I'm American and this is how we roll.
👉 You can all suck it.
Any new comments on this topic will be deleted (unless you have something truly new and interesting to offer, which would SHOCK me).
If anyone wants to disagree with me, please don't do it on my video. Instead, what you should do is make your own response video.
I had a conversation with a fellow expert-level piano player about this video and the ensuing controversy. Listen to the podcast or watch it here on UA-cam. The video is called "Piano NERDS, Bach & Wrong Notes": ua-cam.com/video/ccW_ZKvzhow/v-deo.html

I enjoy extending the notes in little fugue in it's opening, where I've been told that's a romantic corruption and there should be a full stop after each, but I just find the supposed corruption to sound smoother and more heartfelt. Not sure why I stopped with the black key in this piece though. I definitely remember preferring it. I think it was the first thing I ever learned to play. Not sure if I already said that, though. I loved Bach. It was the first collection of classical music I ever purchased, and my memories of frustratedly trying to master counterpoint are vivid. Never really did. I did however gain a notable talent for being able to play very fast and accurately, so toccata was a lot easier than little fugue. But little fugue is my favorite, and forever out of reach. I could hear both sides, and play them individually, but the moment I try to mix them I'd trip up. Fantasia and fugue is a scary one, if immediately bombastic, if I recall the name correctly.
