- The 2023 LEGO Star Wars Republic Gunship set has turned out to be a crazy one. LEGO went crazy opting to make the Clone Wars Coruscant Guard Gunship over all other variants! The choice is a good one but for $140 you are getting a downsized LEGO set, poor quality Clone Trooper Minifigures (Commander Fox... all-time bad), and some questionable design choices. The Palpatine & Padme Minifigures are excellent though and the Gunship, while small looks super cool in dark-red!

It's because they looked at the Lego Star Wars game and were like "hey that looks close enough, let's just use that"
2 extra clones and turning the doors into a double door opening would have made this an easy 10 in my book. I actually like smaller scale sets, it makes it easier to display them on your shelves, and they scale nicely with the minifigures

I just remember a lot of people telling me Cody couldn’t be in the UCS Gunship because it was EP. 2 but now they mix it and those same people went missing 🤔🤔 I don’t care really but I think at the end of the day if you’re gonna make a niche S6 Gunship include the niche outfits too…

Overall the build of this set is pretty solid room to improve but it's satisfactory, but I'd prefer a wolffepack or muunilist 10 gunship instead

For the 20th anniversary of the micro series, yes. A Muunilinst 10 gunship would have made the most sense. But making sense is too hard for the wet brains at Lego.

I would prefer the 2 door split for the interior but I do like how solid it looks when it's closed compared to the small gaps you get from having 2 doors.

Despite it being smaller than others, it does look more minifig scale, but it should have been cheaper(edit: I'm not saying it's the perfect size, I'm saying relative to the size of the minifigs it makes more sense. I agree though, it would be better if it was bigger to fit more troops)
How. A gunship is far bigger than u think. 3-4 minifigs don't take up the entire troop area.
What a stupid post. In cannon you can put like 30+ troops in the troop compartment. This model has its good parts but overall it's too small

I think its eye-popping and unique but it’s audience is more niche than if they did a standard gunship.
I think most people who would buy a standard gunship will also buy this (if it were the same price and whatnot)

Not true. They had the UCS AT-AT and regular AT-AT out at the same time.
@@billmeowsers4142 but didn’t the UCS one come after? If you sell the UCS after then there’s probably a plan for number of sales but if you sell the UCS first you’re losing profit. Especially since they know everyone wants a gunship and complained about the UCS release
It seems like the 'bubble' turrets could have been made out of the same transparent cockpit dome used for the baby Yoda area in the N1, just use some clips on both sides and maybe a sticker or something.
To me it feels like the Commander Fox figure came before anything else in this playset. Like Lego had already planned on releasing or maybe had already designed Fox and needed a playset to release him in. And before they threw him in with a random vehicle someone on the design team remembered that a red gunship exists, so they just googled some reference images and decided on Palpatine and Padme to accompany the troopers just based on the theme. If this playset had actually been inspired by the episode then we would've probably seen Commander Thorn and Clovis instead of Fox and Palps. Not to mention we might've also seen a new outfit for Padme actually based on something they saw her wear in the episodes, not just a quick retouch of a design they've already released.
We definitely should've seen two doors on this design, especially considering they made no use of compartment under the cockpits. Honestly I'm kinda glad that their first attempt at a "modern design" gunship was with a specific variant. Hopefully the design team improves upon this design before releasing a default skin gunship that people are gonna want to army build with. I really hope new fans that missed the last version aren't stuck with this design for another ten years.
This really doesn't make sense when you consider that Fox is the _one_ detail of the set that's egregiously inaccurate/poorly executed. If they legit built up and designed the entire rest of the set based on Fox, he would've looked _a lot_ more polished.
I agree, it feels like they just needed to make a gunship and they already had fox ready to go. I am a newer fan and it was a little disappointing to not have a stock gunship to go with the at-te, overall not a terrible set though. Still hoping for some wolf pack troops with wolf soon.
I think the Padme was them looking at the one they did from the Malevolence and wanting to redeem the figure. I'd also love to see if it's possible to make a Gunship that looks like the others but with 2 of the Coruscant Gunships
Scale wise I actually think it’s perfect, people often mistake the LAAT’s for being these humongous grand ships but they’re really not. They transport troops into battle and that’s all it needs to do. Maybe the model itself could have been 1 or two bricks higher, but other than that I am 100% getting this 😅

I think they mainly went with that outfit for Padme because they wanted all the figures to have red on them to fit the "really red" theme of the set.
I’m so glad people will be able to get a gunship again! I feel like the 3 sets every kid should have is a x wing tie fighter and republic gunship!
The handle Dipping happens in the 2013 gunship too, and the cockpit glass also catches in the same way.

I actually don't mind the downscaling; regarding the older Lego Gunships it always felt kind of weird that they were so big and went for as much as a Millennium Falcon or AT-AT. And even with the several questionable design choices, it's still exciting as someone that doesn't have any of the previous gunships!

Not really. The new one is 1:48 scale which is much smaller than the 1:40-1:42 that most people consider to be minifigure scale. And a lot of MOC builders actually build around 1:35 to accommodate the Minifigs width. So the older Gunship is a perfect balance between those two at 1:37 scale.

I would've preferred it be a little taller for the figs, bubble turrets on the wings double doors and better made/ printed clones. Other than that it looks good! I will get one at some point but not at full price
The 'engines' are actually Big canons. You can see this in ep 2, were they get reloded in the famous 'gunships flooding the arena' sequence. Therefore there not beeing a 'thrust colour' is accurat.

Great review! I think that this gunship is pretty good but since I have the 2008 variant of the gunship, I think I can wait a little bit before buying this. Also the fox does need a waistcape for me so I might have to pick one up once I buy this for myself.
I’m glad they made a specialist Gunship, but it is really small. I wonder if it’s closer to the original Gunship or the Tac-Pod from Ambush on Ferrix.

You could just swap out the head from that set
I think if they did a new palpatine's office or arrest, that it could work as a UCS set , they could include the room where Palpatine is confronted and kills Fisto/Kolar and Saesee instead of just having the main office room.

If you want to display it with the AT-TE, the new one is better sized. The gunship are supposed to be smaller than the walkers.
The only weird issue I have with this is that they turned 4 doors into 2 big ones.
Even though i will be buying 2-3 of these the biggest flaw you pointed out that will bug me is full access to the back of the interior. I really wish the back opened.

Although this set is much smaller than before, I think it's a little closer to minifigure scale than previous inversions. Clones can be seen holding on to the roof in the gun ship and the door openings aren't terribly taller than a clone trooper. Yet in the older one the door openings were super tall. No way a minifig could ( hold onto the roof ) the same way as in the movies, I would say if it was just slighter larger than it is now, maybe a stud bigger everywhere, it'd feel better
There is no thrust effect because those are not the engines. LEGO has finally realized this lol. Those large "cones" on the very top are the rocket launchers. The engines are those black "grill" pieces on the back
The downsize is more accurate. The previous gunships have all been larger than minifigure scale, so I actually like the size. What I have a problem with is that LEGO figured with a smaller size they could make a worse set (doors not opening properly, cockpits being too big, et cetera).
The fact that the reason this set has one more piece than the AT-TE is that Fox has two blasters instead of one is just hilarious to me.
3 more clones a waist capes and no helmet holes would be a pipe dream if only
I don't get how they could get Fox THAT wrong. If it was just the stripe being small or just the middle of the torso being the wrong color or just the kneepads being the wrong color then maybe I could understand it, but all three is just insane.

The Fox design choice is odd: they are clearly able to print just the chest plate, as we see in the shock troopers, but they didn't. Plus, the pink-ish-ness would of been solved by using a standard white clone print, then just swapping out the arms for red (or printing them) and adding his chest and belt red print.
On the one had, they gave us a cheaper Gunship, this could of easily been $170 to make it to scale of the previous versions, and instead its the same price as the at-te. On the other hand, I think most of the people willing to spend $140 would be OK with $170 if it meant a larger, more accurate gunship (and maybe a couple extra pilots?)
Still, I am glad they made it, and I will be getting it, might even be day 1 purchase (I usually wait for the 20% off at walmart)

It has lots of pros and cons for me...but I was hoping for regular one or at least some of other clone units (from the actual frontlines) so it's a no for me. I waited for 10 years, I can wait 10 years more for a perfect one

I built a ep 2 gunship just out of pieces over a year ago and besides mine matching the older sizes, all mechanics match perfectly. Their design team managed to matched a guy using leftover pieces
After building two of the gunships they’re pretty big models as someone that never build the previous ones. Honestly any bigger would feel way too big imo.
But yeah the door definitely need to open bigger and this gunship build would be fantastic.
They’re not way too big just slightly oversized, go and watch attack of the clones the gunships are massive so this gunship is too small
Hi Ryan, can You compare sizes to Razor Crest? As far as I'm aware, they're about the same "life size" and in LEGO form they have almost the same size, so it would be nice to see them two side by side 😊

Munilest 10 gunship would probably be their best selling Lego set of all time. 2 blue arc troopers, 1 red, and at LEAST 2 other regular clones, maybe even clone armor Obi Wan and Dirge....

Tbh, the shocktroopers from 7671 AT-AP look way better than these 2023 ones. I know that they had massive helmets and black faces underneath but they didn’t have as many inconsistencies with printing compared to these new ones that just look like chinese knockoffs.
Bruh how do the 2023 shock troopers look like knock offs? They’re ONLY “issue” is the helmet holes aside from that they are perfect, nostalgia can truly cloud somewhat a judgement. This are objectively the best shock troopers

For all the talk about lego being a kid's toy they sure skipped on the play functions compared to the last two. I just display my lego these days but still a bummer.
I think that the size is good, it strikes a fair balance to make it as close as possible to true minifigure scale
Great review as always. The colorway is amazing but I really dislike the downsize and the lack of play features on this set.
My only guess for Padme’s outfit could be because that season 6 outfit was also what she wore on Mustafar. So I could be that LEGO didn’t want to make the outfit she gets chocked in. That’s my only guess.

Love the minifig scale design. Biggest complaint is the stud shooters

I actually quite like the downsized look to it. It is more accurate. There are scenes in TCW inside the gunship where you can clearly see that it has a rather cramped interior. I love the red look to it as well. There definitely are issues to the set, like the doors being inaccurate and the front side panels having nothing in them. But overall, I really like this set and might pick it up when it comes out.

If I had a nickel for every 2023 lego set based on a TV show releasing on September 1st with a red colour scheme and a reduced size (compared to older iterations) then I'd have two nickels, which isn't a lot but it's weird that it happened twice

Great review. I enjoy hearing your thoughts. Personally, Im enjoying smaller models since they can still fit in the details, but I'm newer to the hobby and never had an opportunity to get the older larger versions.
I cant really speak to any kther design inaccuracies in Fox, but I think their hands are mostly tied on the "it looks pink" part.
Printing white ink on top of other colors is difficult. I'm not going to say it's impossible, but I've never seen a printer do it right. You can see the same color problem of you have a bright red wall that you try to paint white later - it'll take multiple coats of paint. But trying to run thousands lf tiny pieces through a printer multiple times and making the prints line up perfectly every time would be extremely difficult.
The alternative would be using a white piece and printing red, but I suspect we'd just be having a different discussion about different inaccuracies if they had done that instead.
Shouldn’t the commander fox be commander thoron if we’re going off of season 6 material?
I understand that in the source material Fox’s chest armor is only white on the upper portion and not the midriff, but I wonder if a more accurate print on the figure would look worse. Imagining the figure with white printing only on the pectoral armor, it seems like it would look more like he’s wearing a sports bra or something. Just a product of the scale of minifigures I think.
The Shock Troopers are mostly white with a small bit of red on their chests and they look fine. An accurate Fox would just be the inverse of that.

It may be a down sized republic gunship, I think this Gunship looks pretty cool. Very decent because of the minifigure selection and the features on the Gunship.
It's a mostly good looking, but given the 20th anniversary, this 100% should have been a muunilinst 10 gunship. Now that would have been a day 1 purchase.

Honestly id say this set is very accurate with the minifig selection since the corruscant clone troopers actually pilot the ship in the show also the set overall is alr pretty good design
Isn’t it weird how Lego removed waist capes because it “limited playability” such as characters sitting down.
But meanwhile, they make figures like Palpatine which have no playability whatsoever in their legs.
But yeah, let’s just ignore that because it’s a kids toy or whatever.
