      I doubt the sound stressed you out, its the fucking wierd ass drawings they have to represent them.
      The whole video is basically saying animals are having a hard time communicating like they used to do as a result of human activity.
      thats it. the sounds themselves arnt killing animals and the ones that do are extremely close like when dolphins get injured or die when they get to close to a submarine conducting active sonar.
      it disturbs the ecosystem for sure but it's not affecting it enough to warrant taking resources we're putting into other means of reducing our footprint.

    Qxir makes a great point in his video about this topic: whales have no idea what we are doing - these activities have nothing to do with them, and are beyond their comprehension. Us as humans are doing what we are doing with disregard to them, we dont really know think or care about the effect of our actions on whales. What if we were the whales and the humans were aliens? What if these giant invisible god like beings were carrying out tests or activities for their own purposes, with disregard for us, that caused intense pain, blindness deafness or even hemorrhaging and death to us? That would be a taste of our own medicine.

    And this is the exact reason why the Navy doesn't use Military sonar anymore. Military sonar found on US Navy Ship and Submarines, they used these back in the day as a way to track enemy ships and submarines but they don't use it anymore because they're way too strong, sure the waves it emits can travel longer distances to track enemy ships and submarines but animals like dolphins and whales they would get caught in the crossfire with these devices and on top of that it could disrupt the echolocation they use to find their babies so as a result Military Sonar can actually damage the environment and it puts more Animal Rights pressure on the Navy so that's why the Navy no longer uses Military Sonar.

      I'd like to see your source of info and what time of ship you are referring to because as a US Navy sonar technician, I can tell you that we still use sonar for detecting tracking and classifying. If we didn't use sonar anymore, I would be out of a job.
      I also invite you and anyone else to learn the physics of sound in water. Cause the dB level is not constant for the entire transmission of active sonar but is subject to propagation loss, absorption, and other factors.

    Oh Damn! As a fishing boat captain, I never thought my 8 foot propeller bothered them! I made the conscious decision years ago, to turn off my sonar, when I knew I was in sufficiently deep water, and was not looking for fish. I have always thought that my sonar was being the bigger nuisance! So, is there a better propulsion design to address this problem?

    • @OceanCareOrg
      @OceanCareOrg  3 роки тому +5

      Thank you for your answer and your good thoughts. Surface piercing drives like Arneson are the quietest of the boat propulsion systems. Orcas seem not to mind these much. But turning your sonar off when not needed is also a huge help, as it can be very disturbing to mid- or high-frequency sensitive whales and dolphins. Choosing a sonar that is over 200 kHz is also preferable, but that may not give you enough penetration. Diesel engines with low rpms moving slowly don’t seem to be as disturbing to many whales as others, but are still somewhat noisy. Speed makes a large difference, with slower speeds almost always producing less noise.

    Unrelated to the videos message, I would've really appreciated if you used the actual sounds of (modern)sonar, airguns, cavitation etc. and not these...extreme...standins.
    Cargoship propellers do not sound like drills on steroids, warships don't use a CW ping in that frequency since WW2 and seismic airguns don't sound like a bloody bomb going off next to you.
    I get what you're trying to say, but accuracy in detail makes you more credible.

    • @michaelcaplin8969
      @michaelcaplin8969 4 роки тому +5

      Well, cargoship propellers are insanely loud and sound much worse than in the video. Sonar is also incredibly uncomfortable to listen to, and MUCH worse than in this video. The airguns do sound exactly like explosions, but worse. They are loud enough to penetrate through kilometres of rock. That's significantly louder than a rocket taking off. Literally everything you wrote in your comment is just wrong. Which leads me to ask this question: why would you write it? I agree that they should have exchanged the weak little sonar ping in the video for the real thing, which sounds horrible. It would have made it more impactful. But the airguns are spot on, and the propeller here isn't as bad as the real thing either.

    • @BlackThanator
      @BlackThanator 4 роки тому +2

      @@michaelcaplin8969 Actually, Cargoship propellers aren't even that noisy. They emit a rather slow and rhythmic "sloshing" that is very distinct, but hardly "insanely loud".
      Now, small boat propellers or even outboarders are an entirely different story, as those are actually extremely loud thanks to their high rpm.
      Sonar is indeed very uncomfortable to hear, given it's high frequency and incredible volume.
      In fact it is so loud that it can kill people (divers) if they get too close, which turns military-grade active sonar into a very useful deterrent against enemy divers trying to sabotage your ship.
      My point with the seismic airgun wasn't so much addressing the intensity of the sound, but rather the filesample used to represent it here.
      You can clearly make out that the sound from the video is a shockwave traveling through air, most likely coming from an actual explosive going off.
      Due to their artificial nature (and their actual purpose), seismic airguns create a repeatable (less chaotic) pulse which sounds more like "thumping".
      Jive Turkey has made a very good analysis of an airgun sound sample, you should check that out if you want to hear the actual noise. Of course it's recorded from a large distance but you should be able to make out the difference in tone.
      As to why I made the comment in the first place, it was to point out things that bothered me personally while offering alternatives to improve the content.
      You may disagree with me, but thats what comments are ultimately for.

    • @amandawoodward5596
      @amandawoodward5596 2 роки тому +2

      Agreed. I'm a sonar tech and have listened to merchant props and they just sound like one slapping water usually. And the sonar the depicted here was a poor representation. I hate stuff like this because it tells people is killing marine mammals while not actually talking about the physics of the sound in water and why this is happening nor do they address the measures we take in order to protect marine life. But they prefer painting the navy as the bad guy and anyone else who puts sound in water. Anyone who buys anything imported can blame themselves also. Hell part of mapping the ocean requires sonar.
