Dude, the last line was "Mother, did it need to be so high" is a reference to the psychological, emotional WALL that he has BUILT over time. One she helped him build. This story is a psychological journey for the character of the unfolding narrative. As I said in another comment... the album is telling a story.... and this song is just one chapter in that narrative.

🧱 I was a teenager back in the 70's, and graduated high school in 1977. Back then we grew up listening to the best era of music in the 20th century. Pink Floyd is still one of my favorite bands of them all.

Stan, you got it exactly Brother, great job! Only thing, the last line is “Why did it need to be so high” meaning the Wall

You need to listen to the entire album... in sequence, and then you'll hear this song in the context of the unfolding narrative of the album. The album isn't just a collection of songs. Each song is like a different chapter in a novel, telling a story.

Ditto, the entire album builds that wall and needs to be listened to in it's entirety.

Stan you nailed the intent of the song. In the album the Wall, the Mother loses her husband, the child's father, in WWII. And the child is building an emotional wall around himself and she is only too willing to help. This is a masterpiece and is scary.

It gets really real with Pink Floyd. Two at the top geniuses and their two lowkey genius mates. Deciding what to do after they make the 4 greatest albums ever in a row. Then David says I got some ideas. And Roger says "soft". What happens next will eventually blow your mind.

Wall.yoirreaction is pretty much spot on about an over protective mother. Her son has trouble functioning in society and the wall is to keep the outside world out. The Wall is a concept album that should be listened to in full in the running order on the album. It is also worth watching the film of the same name and all will be clearer.

WALL…… Stan there’s a live version of this on UA-cam from 1980. It has an extended guitar solo which I believe had to be shortened for the album so it would fit on to the album. The Wall being a double album with many songs that tell Pinks story from beginning to end. It’s a great version with the extended solo well worth a listen.

Excellent analysis of the song! I really liked what you said about separating Pink Floyd's music from the lyrics. This song sounds amazing, it's my favorite Pink Floyd song. However, the lyrics are quite dark.

This song is about an emotionally troubled woman who helps build a (much too high) emotional wall around her son, who also ends up being very emotionally troubled himself. If you listen to the entire album start to finish you will discover that it’s about mental illness. You got the context of the song correct.

I've been a Pink Floyd band since 1968.
We had the opportunity to see Dark Side of the Moon
    Animals
    The Wall
    Momentary lapse of Reason twice.
At The Wall concert throughout the concert they built around 150 ft lg by 30 ft h wall between the stage and the audience.
Also had a Orchestra mixed Choir and boys choir with about 100 members each.
And each with their own director as well. The concert required hundreds of extras.
Not all of their albums are concept. But the ones like this that are should be listened to in order.
Otherwise it's like taking a great book and reading one chapter somewhere in the middle leaving you with no prior context. Then only to have part of the plot now watered down when you finally hear the rest of it.
Should you choose to watch the movie, beware.
It adds an extra layer of emotion.
But it do explain a lot....
    ✌️
    🤠🏞️🐂

Wall - Nice reaction, I like how you listen all the way through before commenting, it gives you a chance to take it all in and give a more considered reaction. You are right in that mother is usually a cliche for the perfect, loving person we can always rely on but surprise, surprise, she can be as f'd up as the rest of us! I love Pink Floyd and the Wall has some great songs but for me it's not their best, no offence to the many who love it.

Congratulations ... you got it right Stan. So many reactors have basically said about this album ... "What a lovely tribute to mothers!" No, it's not, not at all. Song was written by bassist Roger Waters. Roger's father died in WW2, he was a gunner in the back of a Lancaster bomber that got shot down. If you listen to Pink Floyd's "The Gunner's Dream", you'll realise that it's about his father falling down through the clouds to his death. So Roger grew up without a father, and with a very protective mother, who, I suspect, wanted him to never leave home. That's the context of this song. And, by the way, "The Gunner's Dream" is a wonderful song, very emotional. I recommend you 'react' to it.

🧱🧱🧱.I appreciate your reaction. You should probably read the lyrics when you listen to Pink Floyd songs. The last line of this song is mother did it need to be so high, of course meaning the Wall. You definitely get what the songs about an overprotective mother because of the bad things that happened to her. She lost her husband right after giving birth to her son right before the end of World War II . She was raising her son pink. All buy Herself and she is transferring all of her fears into her son. She had the best intentions but her trauma made her an overbearing mother, as we say nowadays, A helicopter, Mom. You definitely need to listen to the whole album Pink Floyd’s The Wall. Can be a life-changing experience if you listen to the whole album. you just have to remember. This is about a man who loses his sanity.❤️✌️🌼l

as you no doubt recognize, this is NOT a "Mother's Day" tribute....in 'The Wall' movie/video, the singer is a messed up performer (musician) who was emotionally smothered by his mother, who "protected" him from living a real life , leading to his complete alienation from society, complete with drug dependence and violent tendencies.......thanks to others (below) for also recognizing this......this is a Roger Waters masterpiece........here is a link to Roger and the band "Lucius" doing \Mother\ during Covid lockdown ua-cam.com/video/9lCFaSL9aSE/v-deo.html
