I’ve had two FXR’s. Both 85 models. Sold both and regret it still. My brother has a 1999 FXR2 in perfect shape. Looks new. I WILL buy it from him one day
I bought a new fxrs in 1986. Red.I loved every mile I rode on it. Forced to sell due to financial reasons. I had owned Harleys before and since and I loved em all. This one I bought brand new from Myers Harley Davidson in Montgomery AL. Good people. Long time ago.great times..
Bought a 1990 FXR about the same bike i had years before only the first FXR had double disks in front. Bike never let me down and i put 1,5 ton on top of the 40.000 that was on it when i bought it. That was the reason for me to get one again . The '90 FXR had some oil leak problem in the nosecone but i fixed it Last Sathurday. New seal and gasket did the trick. Got some rust on the frame upfront and a bit corrosion on the engine top. So it looks horrible but she runs great. I am gonna ride like it is and get to know the bike first. Then next year i am gonna take the engine out and do a frame powdercoat and fix the corrosion problem on the evo topend. These are cool bikes and handles real good but they are not that fast anymore. But thats oke for us 60+ guys. See you on the road one day............

I bought my 1990 FXR with no issue... until the year after I bought it (2021) I blew both base gaskets and a head gasket. Had lots of carb issues, recently had all the sprocket bolts sheared off and found the rear axle was stuck. It has been one heck of a ride. Love the bike when I don't have to be working on it.
I have a 1986 fxrs-sp . i got it new as a left over model all the rage was for the new soft tail .The bike is mostly stock, pipes cam and ss carb . the fxrs-sp has duel disc brakes in the front tack and spedo on the bares and more spring travel in the forks takes heavy # fork oil

Asking everyone I can find this. I bought an 89 Fxrs-c. Garage kept, 95% stock. I replaced the leaking base gaskets and The original warped rocker box covers. Rode it lightly no highway but within 3 months the gaskets were being blown out between the rocker box sections. My mechanic says the breather tube is working. I mean they built it, especially the lowrider version to compete with the Japanese metric cruisers. They were trying to make something more like a metric cruiser. I could handle better and stuff. Those old first generation shadows are actually great. Bikes really great bikes man. Shadows are great bikes in general people just don't give Honda enough credit or any of the imported. Cruisers, yes, they'll never compete with the heritage and nostalgic feel Harley's, but they definitely beat them when it comes to performance
The frame makes it so FXRs are a fine base for a functional Harley. The old solid mount frame classics are beautiful pieces of industrial design but nothing can look that good while having rubber engine mounts so for function FXR wins. I urge anyone interested to just go get one rather than piddling around looking for their dream version. Go BUILD that dream version. Harleys are so easy because they're extremely low-tech which is a good thing. Don't pay too much and be willing to drive for a deal, or just buy a clear titled frame (mid teens to maybe two grand if it's freshly painted or powder coated) and fill it with the big twin and gearbox (late model spline shaft bagger box with integral oil bag preferred if running an Evo or Shovel) of your choice. Twin Cams are basically a drop in with minor mods and an M8 doesn't take much if you want even more HP.
