Simply the best youtube channel for audio learning, along with Audio University. Thanks so much guys to put so much effort in the teaching skills, we really feel it James!!
An Incredible video, simply the best talk through on the tube. Many thanks, lots of what i do for our small band P.A. set up will now be lifted another level. Cheers
Really Amazing, Could you please do a series on this explaining Compression, Saturation, etc.. which would be really helpful for church volunteers. Thanks!
Your videos helped me manage the ministry that God has given me. I have a lot of mistakes I realized after watching your videos. Thank you for helping develop my skills. I pray that God blesses you more to help others in the same field. Thank you.
Thanks James, as an eKit drummer EQ has moved into my world. It’s no longer just tuning a drum and handing or over to you for mixing. For each drum and cymbal I have the low shelf, mid Q bell and high shelf; something I wasn’t familiar with until now. I have to take on the responsibility of pre-EQ for each pad. If you had a quick go-to (similar to your live guide) for edrums that would be helpful. Cheers Doug.
Really thanks a lot for this amazing informative video . Right now I am a beginner... But soon by your videos I'll improve my self.. thanks a lot again.
To help my ear training I did mic feedback system testing with an RTA app on my phone to identify the frequencies. 1100, 2200 and 5500Hz everytime. With practice it's becomes a fast instictive cut :) A really helpful video!
Great stuff! I'm probably around the intermediate to advanced level. I've been mixing for a worship team for about a year and a half, and it's a good mix but I still have a lot to learn. Also, I'm actually an Eagles fan lol. May the best team win 👍
I AM a beginner learning EG an a lot of other things ON A SQ-6 sound board. You R right, a beginner needs to practice many hours to grow as a sound board mixer. Thanks for this video, i will check out your links for the virtual sound check. is your virtual sound check have a graphic to mimic a SQ-6 sound board? that would be awesome.
Excellent EQ tutorial James. My live mix for our Church Livestream is going much better. I'm over the hard setup stage with my new in the box workflow and getting Studio One working well. I like that idea on the EQ narrow cut with a broader additive to smooth it in. I'll grade myself intermediate advanced. If we get our EQ settings wrong, it Hertz. PS I can't unhear the BBQ fork. When I open my plug-in effects rack next Sunday, I'm going to be thinking about BBQ forks. Thanks in advance. 🙂
I have the Live Mixing Field Guide that puts all my EQ & compression starting places for each instrument all on one page each. It's super handy to have at FOH and for training newbies to listen for EQ changes... www.livemixingfieldguide.com
Another good video, sir! Since learning from you and taking your online courses, I would say I am in the intermediate, working on the advanced stuff right now stage.
IS there any data/stats on HOW people who watch a Livestream church service on UA-cam actually listen to it? I mean, predominantly earpods? Their computer/iPad's speakers? Headphones? I wonder because what they use for listening can affect how you EQ the audio stream for best sound. thanks for any info .. great vids!
Hi! Sir i have a very little knowledge about this equalizer, i am using Eqmac basic on my mac and i am using very simple interface, we are using zoom, the problem it’s always my keyboard louder than my voice and what should i do or how to adjust my equalizer thank you Sir.
when you mean effects, do you mean the reverb & delay sends/returns? If so, you can program a User Function key to act as a mute group for the effects returns. Or I prefer to have it on a DCA so I can fade it rather than cut it.
@@AttawayAudio Yes, the built in effects. We don't have a sound guy, so shutting off the reverb with a footswitch between songs allows for better talking to the audience.
When there's no gain change, the position of the frequency selection doesn't matter at all. I only put them in certain places so I can quickly grab that frequency when I want it, if I need to make a change on the fly.
somewhere between a beginner and intermediate levels. To move forward, I need to have an actual worship team to run sound for. It is hard to work on my craft when there is only the pastor speaking and doing worship videos to.
A great way to train your skills is to try your hand at mixing a multitrack. Even if the workflow is different, it'll train your ear on what you should be looking out for, and it'll teach you how to address the problems you hear. If you want to learn for a live environment, you can purposefully limit yourself in a saw to have channel processing similar to the console you're working on, e.g. EQ and compressor on every channel, and maybe a bus reverb.
Are you doing all the EQ stuff listening to what comes out of your speakers, or do you do it with your headphones? For instance, if you are about to eq kick drum, you can't just mute everything else in order to focus on drums. When you have full mix playing out from speakers, it's pretty hard to focus on whatever you are currently trying to mix. From other hand, it doesn't seem to be possible to eq stuff from headphones, since sound you hear from speakers differ from what's in your headphones. How do you EQ on live service and on rehearsal?
I don't use headphones in live sound very often. No one else hears what the headphones sound like. I don't solo either. But if I have to, I can duck other things using DCAs to highlight certain things. But the real key is to listen to things and EQ in context.
It might be my headphones or my 46-year-old ears, but I hear almost no difference in anything you're doing. I keep waiting for the obvious difference, and it all sounds the same.
Check out the audio ear training game "peak master" on soundgym.co (there's no m after .co). You'll start hearing and identifying different frequencies, and it's fun to have it gamified too.

Mr.Attaway dropping knowledge …
Always right to the point instead of around "the curve" with it!
Thanks for all you do!
This is the best explanation of EQ on UA-cam.

Such a good video! I appreciate you have different angles to really drive the lesson home!
Thank you! Sir. God bless you, sir.

James, love the videos. Anyway to put this into chapters to easily get to the different instrument groups for quick reference?

What DAW are you using?
Hi, on an sq6 Allen n heath is it possible to send DCA to an aux channel ? if yes then how.
Commenting for that almighty algorithm.
I'm confused with ur tips, "narrow cut, wide boost" for EQ. In the other video you cut vocal sound in 200 and 500 with wide Q. Can you please explain?
it's a guideline, not a rule. Sometimes you need a general cut like the low shelf or wide bell curve to cut out the proximity effect.
@@AttawayAudio thank you! Do you have video that talk about proximity effect in detail? I learned a lot from ur videos, I'm blessed thank you
We have a StudioLive 32S and wondered if there is a way to use a footswitch to turn the effects on/off. This board does NOT have channel inserts.

Before you boost or take away will the position of those eq dots matter where they sit? When it's flat?
When there's no gain change, the position of the frequency selection doesn't matter at all. I only put them in certain places so I can quickly grab that frequency when I want it, if I need to make a change on the fly.
If the gain is 0, the frequency point doesn't change the audio, but it can make you get to the frequency you want to faster.

careful bro, those aren't washable 🤣🤣🤣

Volume because a "volume of acoustic pressure in the room"
Man, the diss on drummers and bass players, ouch, lol.
I'm all about equal opportunity :)
The “resident” frequency typo makes me feel like I’m kicking a frequency out of its home.
lol speed over accuracy sometimes
As a live engineer and bass player, I detest the crayon reference. I use finely sharpened colored pencils…..😤
It’s all about the low end.
