  • D&D takes another swing at the big screen. This time in the form of a fantasy comedy. Is it (at the very least) better than the last big screen D&D disaster? Here's my review of DUNGEONS & DRAGONS: HONOR AMONG THIEVES!

@troy neenan the movie was by far a terrible movie. No way you thought that was good. The barbarian was lame. The bard was a joke. The druid conveniently forgot she could shape change just to make a scene work. That was utter trash. No distinguishing class abilities. This was VERY high on my "Please Don't Suck" list, and it not sucking is enough for me. Hugh Grant gets to chew the scenery? Sweet! Chris Pine as a sarcastic, motormouth pain-in-the-ass example of one of my favorite D&D classes? Nifty! Justice Smith as a Wild Magic Sorcerer (NOT A WIZARD... Wizards learn their magic, Sorcerers are born with it) who's also Elminster's grandson or whatever? HELL YES, SIGN ME UP FOR THAT.

I love that Chris Pine was cast as the bard! The character I’m playing right now is a water genasi bard, and she’s sooo much fun to play. I hope Chris Pine had the best time playing his bard character

I had a blast watching this movie. I didn't expect to love it that much. The cast is flawless all of them. The villain is really good I mean she's really terrifying and there's just so (so) many great scenes. As far as smaller franchise/"underdog" adventure movie goes I had as much fun watching Honor Among Thieves than I had watching Serenity for the first time. Both movies got the same vibe to me. I really, really liked Honor Among Thieves. Such a great film.

I loved the B-level CGI and the practical puppetry. Brought me back to my childhood, told a great story. A good story beats good effects EVERY time.

Fun fact about the Dead Alewives sketch: the mage and the halfling thief were played by Dan Harmon and Rob Schrab respectively.

Thank you for this review. Other YTers complaining about how the directors were joking about emasculating the lead, but ignoring that I saw it as a bunch of friends mocking the "Bard" leader as you would around a table of DND. Can't wait to watch the movie.

Saw it last night, super fun movie, exactly what it needed to be and I wish they do another one with a different group and explore more of the D&D universe (finger's crossed for Baldur's Gate)

Yeah, i thought it was pretty solid too! The effects when Chris Pine melted were fantastic and had the audience rolling! He looked way better than M.O.D.O.K did with a jacked up face!

Yeah, I didn't really have a problem with the CGI. It's not Avatar 2, but it's also not as bad as recent MCU or DCEU flicks.

I forgive the shaky CGI for how much fun and creative invention was put into the set pieces. I absolutely loved the fat ass dragon that chases them, being fat for eating so damn much.

Really enjoyed your take on the movie! I liked the movie quite a bit. Was it the best fantasy film ever made? Does it top Lord of the Rings? No way, not even close! Does it top an evening spent by myself at my apartment? Does it remind me of the fun I once had playing Dungeons and Dragons many years ago? Absolutely! This movie was fun for all the right reasons and it didn't try (and fail) to do anything more than that. It knew where the line was and it did a good job staying behind it. It didn't contain multiple scenes filled with villains ranting and raving maniacally about how they were going to crush their enemies and control the world. Instead it focused on the lead characters, not just the lead but the entire party. Everybody got their screen time and a moment of it was wasted doing so. This movie was well made and I'm happy that I watched it.
    Quality stuff, for sure!

This is why I dig your channel. I saw the trailer of this movie and thought "meh". Even though I have a sub to my cinema there's a chance I wouldn't have gone see it. But then I saw your reaction about this movie and that was enough for me to give it a chance. I loved it! What a surprise. Nice story, genuinely funny, nice locations, no nonsense forced into it, great acting, even the CGI was nice.

I thought Jeremy was going to reference the DELIGHTFUL 80s D&D cartoon (and which gets a fun homage in this film with the cartoon characters appearing in the maze/arena scene).

I loved it. I could see how a none player might would have an idea of "what dnd is" that could cause an unrealistic expectation or players that only like super serious campaigns could be disappointed. But for most dnd players and the general public who want a fun movie, I think it knocks it out of the park.
