All the other reviews have been positive too. The only negative criticism I have heard is the shoddy CGI in some places but that's just a minor nitpick and not a real criticism cuz even many recent superhero movies had weak CGI. D&d is a mid budget film and they just couldn't afford the gamble of spending more on CGI especially after the last D&d movie bombed.

@Adam Davis 1) I barely know the circumstances around that and from what I do know, I thought that issue had been resolved. 2) Even if that was something I was up to speed on, it's not tied into this movie in any way. Something I noticed and appreciate about this movie is how it utilizes the DnD campaign formula so well in the movie. It feels like a fun adventure, with good humor, fantastic characterization and plot development, and as you mentioned the structure of the movie is basically a DnD campaign. To be honest I’m exactly the opposite. I’ve played plenty of DnD but taking the jokey not taking it serious nature of a play session and setting it to a film feels the movie is a parody of a story that has never been told. Like if last of us was about playing a video game instead of the story.
Definitely putting the lore directly on screen would have been unwatchable but I wish they just found stories they wanted to tell within the setting if they want to use the ip kinda like how Arcane did.
That said it’s just a subjective opinion and hope you enjoy the movie!

I’m not a gamer, but the clips Dan showed reminded me of those movies too. Even though I don’t have a D&D background, it really gives me joy when a movie or tv show manages to get it right for an IP that has such a huge fan base. Not only is there such a positive vibe in the theater, but when that many people love the original IP I’ve come to realize that is indicative that there’s something special about it. One of the biggest surprises in recent memory. I have been able to predict punchlines in comedies for so long, and in D&D even if you see it coming they still executed it very well. The movie was able to make everything feel familiar without needing to give audience tutorials. I haven't had so much fun watching a movie in awhile. Pine is, and will always be, my favorite Hollywood Chris. He's got the talent, the swag, the vocals, the humor, and the self-awareness that makes him seem much more relatable and down-to-earth than his other Chris competition (with Evans a close second.) Sure, he's a nepo-baby, but he isn't afraid to publically admit his faults and similarly doesn't care if he's conventionally stylish or hip. Plus, let's not forget he's a great voice actor (ex: Rise of the Guardians) and does one heck of a car commercial. I think a lot of people underrated Chris Pine. I can't remember who said it, I was reading an article going back through his films and they were talking about how he's become a lead but he seems to have a lot more fun playing in things like Smokin' Aces or Horrible Bosses 2. Basically he's a character actor with the looks of a leading man. It was one of the best summations of the actor I can remember. He's able to poke fun at himself, he doesn't ever feel self conscious about looking silly or playing against type. For awhile they were trying to put him into more typical leading man fare but to me it feels like his more recent work is letting him play around a little more and he looks like he's having a blast doing so in this movie.

I know! Lately it’s felt like they all decided since fans were going to show up anyway to just not care about the writing. The plots don’t have to be high literature but they just have to make sense! I even revisited some of my favorite “just for fun” movies from back in the day thinking maybe it was just nostalgia making me feel like it was better in the “good old days.” But nope-things like The Mummy hold up surprisingly well. Fun, not setting up a million other things, simple plot, and characters you could really like. I really miss movies like that

I'm a fan of the concept of D&D, but tried playing it and learned that wasn't for me. I love that we're getting a proper film so that I can enjoy it in a way that's in my wheelhouse.
And my family and I still haven't gotten back in the swing of going to cinemas again, but we'll definitely be going to this one. I hope it does well enough to give us more.

I went to see this today, largely based on your enthusiastic review. I thought it was really fun. It was cool to see a fantasy movie that, even though it is inspired by existing IP, featured all new characters and a new story. There was a lot of creativity in the action, the magic, and the way things were shot. I enjoyed the humor, especially the parts with Rege-Jean Page. As far as specific moments, I especially liked the fat dragon, and using the portal into the cart was cool too. It would be fun to see more stories in this world, especially if they bring back the same heroes but put them in a new part of the world with new challenges and adventures.

Me and my partner walked out of a screening last night, about half way through. Which we've both never done before. We didn't find it a blast, the script wasn't funny, Chris Pine sucked, it didn't come together for us, it felt like a film I would watch on Netflix randomly on a Sunday afternoon and turn it off after 10 minutes, some of the effects earlier in the film were frightfully bad. This is our opinion and we're both super annoyed because we were really looking forward to this!

I'm glad this looks good. I can imagine it was a difficult pitch. It would appear that some people are tiring of superheroes, so there was an opportunity for something new, but to go to magic and fantasy? That was what was in before superheroes, and "commit to the artistic vision"? Rather than the prince of persia/clash of the titans/gods of Egypt garbage? I am now quite hyped for this one

Just wanted to pop back on here and say thanks. Went to see this one based largely on this enthusiastic review, and I thought it was a blast. I hope more people see it. I really appreciated how the visuals of the movie were fully employed: whether providing the energy (the shape chase), scoring a laugh (that's my favorite dragon ever), and helping build out the world (oyster cart). This was a movie that was in full command of all its component pieces, and it was just FUN.
