I've been growing Cosmos for over 30 yrs in USA zone 4 - upper midwest. As I have a cottage garden, I let the Cosmos reseed itself and it is so prolific that it comes up like weeds! In the thinning process, I found that planting a handful of small Cosmos plants together in a bunch acts like a natural stake as the plants support each other. I plant each bunch about 12-18" apart. With this method, you can create a sturdy Cosmos hedge that is absolutely stunning in July & August. Thanks for the pruning tips, Sarah. I will try them this summer.
Christine Nichols yes you are so right! Worked for me as well. I planted them way to close and the result is that they are very straight without staking.
My mom planted cosmos for years across the front of the house (east exposure) in zone 4. She harvested seeds all summer and reseeded in the spring from the seeds she harvested, never thinning and never staking the plants and they were beautiful all summer every summer.
I grow Cosmo in a zone 10a. We had temperatures of 44c consistently for weeks at a time. The cosmos not only survived but thrived. It self seeded everywhere and is now going to be a constant in my garden.
I had a big giant plant grow up in my little flower garden..I had no idea what it was ,when it bloomed I was able to Identify it ! Next year Im planting them on purpose! I didnt know you could clip them and they rebloom. Wonderful!😊💕Thank you for teaching me these things!❤😃🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸
Dear Sarah Raven - your catalogues are the shiniest and coolest in comparison to Thompson and Morgan and others in the UK. I take notice of such things. A happy customer. Love from Soul Train Garden
🌸🌸🌸I once grew cosmos from seed and planted them in an 8ft by 2ft bed in which my Dad used to put the ashes from our coal fire and the cosmos grew to 6ft high! Amazing! I’ve never managed to grow them as tall since then as I don’t have a coal fire now.❤️
My cosmos really got destroyed by 2 storms we had back to back. You are the only video I could find to help me figure out a way to stake them properly! I hope one I do this they will bounce back 🤞🏻 thank you!!!🙂 I have some corkscrew stems but now that I know hopefully next year it can be avoided all together.
Interestingly, I planted one cosmos plantlet in a tub that was on a windy corner (I didn't know any wiser) and it grew so sturdy, it was huge, like a small tree! I put it down to the possibility that it strengthened its stem to deal with the wind. I was amazed at this particular plant, it was a beauty, so healthy and full of flowers, just from one little seed.
I had one plant that did something similar. The stem was as thick as my thumb, and it was over 6 feet tall! I have no idea how it grew so tall and sturdy. I was hoping it would seed itself, but alas, no 'babies' the next spring.
Wonderful flowers. I have grown them for years & find they stand up so well to any type of weather. Very forgiving plants. I have always bought plug plants but this has inspired me to grow them from seed.
Thanks, some useful tips there. I bought some seeds yesterday having never grown cosmos before. They were one of my mum's favourites and I want to continue where she left off.
Greetings from the Argentinian Patagonia. Here October is very windy. It blows from 30 km per hour during many days, all day long, up to 120 km per hour. It is really hard to have a garden or any plants, but with some effort, you can. So this video has been very helpful. Thanks!
Beautiful, I was looking for ideas on where to put mine, I grew so many, and filled 4 pots, so now need to find a space in the garden, not easy when you're a plantaholic like me 😂 I like the pea netting idea
Thank you never grown Cosmos before I have sown some seeds and they are coming along nicely. I have learnt a lot from your tutorial which was excellent.
I absolutely love this plant. It`s been very delightful for me watching your video, and by the time I listened to the sound of a plane it reminded me my garden. It's the same here. I'm growing cosmos from seeds for first time, and I wonderer when I should plant them in the definite area of the garden. At this time they are in pots with only two leaves.
I’m growing zinnias already and planned on growing cosmos as well. I will be sure to after your video! I’d also like to say I love your dress! And your hairstyle too! Thanks!
Great Video, You can also leave a small patch uncut to go to seed and the birds love the seeds and while they are eating them some drop to the ground and will stay dormant until the wether gets warm the following year. I do not know why but the ones that self seed seem to be stronger plants then the ones I start in Poly Tunnel. The bees go barmy for Cosmos. Great for wildlife gardens.
I've never tried netting before either but will buy a roll of it next trip to the farm store where I purchase garden seed etc. I love the idea of it because I do believe what's offered here is the the same shade of green as cosmos so I bet it really does seem camouflaged. Thank you for your tips.
Thank you Sarah for your very comprehensive and clear instruction.. I'm a great fan of cosmos purity and will grow it from seed next year.. Best wishes Val.
Find the video very useful specially in regard to the advice on staking, which I'll apply to this year's cosmos plants - expected to grow to their full height by end of March, 207. I live in Calcutta, India.
Happy to hear that they last a long time as a cut flower - they look a bit fragile so I thought they would be a day in a vase and then gone. Very excited to see how mine do! Great video.
I’ve tried these (Cosmos Gazebo Red) for the first time this year as they look a lovely flower and will be great for the bees. The kids helped me sow them and also some ‘Jolly Jester’ Marigolds. Looking forward to the flowering. Also, really good videos so I’ve subscribed. Thank you🙂
Cosmos plants are one of my faves. I have several planted in my mini garden (balcony). I noticed that some of my cosmos buds don’t actually bloom. I discovered these white pests clinging into the branches and some in the buds. How do I get rid of these pests? I dont really go for chemical pesticides. Would you suggest anything organic mixture which I can spray to kill the pests? Thanks and have wonderful day ahead!
Thank you for all the tips, I'm having a hard time sowing cosmos purity here in Brazil, they were supposed to grow well all year in my country, but its taking a very long time in comparison with other vareities that I sowed. We are in middle summer here, do you have any idea why its not working? Thanks again, best regards from Brazil
Wow! Thanks, I like that staking method. 2 yrs in a row my Cosmo’s have done lousy. Bug bushes last yr, not 1 flower. This yr they are dwarf & very fragile. I buy seeds at Lowe’s or Home Depot. Same lousy brand. Do you know a good place to order good Cosmo seeds?
A friend of mine in Colorado has Cosmos in her front garden and they are beautiful - I bought two Cosmos plants here in North West FL a while back and they haven't grown at all. Still the same height ~ even though they say some varieties will flourish here, I think it is too hot and humid.
I started planting cosmos seeds since Sept 2021. My plants are now in bloom however, I noticed that some of my cosmos buds’ blooming get stunted. I found out white pests/insects along some of the branches and buds. How do I get rid of these pests? Hopefully something organic. THanks and more power.
@@jenniferwoodford1577 I have much more space than she does. I'm making 50' beds about 3 feet wide, and 3 and a 1/2 feet afart. I am fortunate to have ample acreage. Honestly, when I saw the video and how she uses the netting I thought the exact same thing you did!!! How the heck does she get in there to pick the flowers, let alone weed, or even plant them! ;)
I just planted 100 seeds indoors in individual seedling pots and 95% have germinated. After one week though, (they are 5 cm tall) I have noticed that they are very straight and spindly and am worried that due to their slender nature they might break under their own weight. Even with a gentle water sprayer, I managed to break one of them. My question is, are they supposed to be like that at this stage? Should I re-pot them, deeper perhaps to give them more of a longitudinal support? Your thoughts are appreciated.
Almost all of my cosmos have fallen over from deer or rain.... really disappointed. I want try and use that netting next year. How high should I put the net?
Great analysis, thank you! Could you help me with something unrelated: My OKX wallet holds some USDT, and I have the seed phrase. (behave today finger ski upon boy assault summer exhaust beauty stereo over). How can I transfer them to Binance?

I'm watching this video 8 years late but is it just me or is her voice so soothing? Thank you for the info!
I love these. I plant many, many, many here in Brooklyn NYC every year. They flower nonstop and bees LOVE them

If I transplant them from seed, how far apart should I space each plant for this effect?

What a fab idea. I’ll be doing that in future 👍
