I was a young man studied with MMY in USA in 70s & 80s, I married and had two sons I sent to the Maharishi elementary school in Iowa. They were taught veda lila dances in every grade (Sanskrit, Asanas, Pranayama, & Meditation too of course). Was difficult not to cry while I watched. I have read this line - गीतं वाद्यं तथा नृत्यं त्रयं संगीतमुच्यते। Which means sangeetam entails nrtyam. Is naatyam different from nrtyam ? Because in this documentary naatyam is said to be different medium alongside literature and sangeetam to express emotions which form middle layer between knowledge and wisdom.
The way i came across Bharatanatyam is different compare to Natya Shastra by Bharata Muni. If you studied Tamil sangam literature you can clearly see the development of Bharatanatyam. How it's developed how it's flourished in Tamil culture. I don't know any other culture has Bharatanatyam in their core & integral part of culture. [ if I missed any other culture other than Tamil please mention it ] This is how Bharatanatyam evolved in Tamil society starting from Sangam period. 👇 Dance was the resplendent art form in ancient Tamil Country. Dancing played an indispensable role in the lives of the ancient Tamil Sangam society. • In ancient times the dance was known as Koothu (கூத்து). • Later the dancing transformed into “Chadir attam” (சதிர் ஆட்டம்) which means “court dance” and was danced in the temples of South India by the Devadasis (தேவதாசி). • Bharatanatyam (பரதநாட்டியம்), the classical dance form of Tamil Nadu, derived from its older form. The corpus of literature written during Tamil Sangam period spanning from 300 BC to 300 AD was known as Sangam literature. Koothu (Tamil: கூத்து) is the most ancient form of dance in Tamil land and is considered as the historical predecessor of the Bharatanatyam (பரதநாட்டியம்). • Tolkappiyam (தொல்காப்பியம்) by Tolkappiyar (தொல்காப்பியர்), a book on phonology, grammar and poetics, assignable to earlier than the 2nd century CE (pre-dates Bharata muni's Natyashastra, a grammar treatise on dance) provides information about the dance of ancient Tamils. "நாடக வழக்கினும் உலகியல் வழக்கினும் பாடல் சான்ற புலனெறி வழக்கம்" (தொல்காப்பியம். பொருளதி.53) It refers to several kinds of women dancers i.e., Viraliyar (விறலியர்) (ministrels), Koothiyar (கூத்தியர்) (dancing girls), Paratthaiyar (பரத்தையர்) [ ☆ remember this name ] (courtesans), Kannular (கண்ணுளர்) (santhi-koothu) as well as men dancers i.e., Koothar (கூத்தர்) (dancing men), Panar (பாணர்) minstrels), Porunar (பொருநர்) (war bards). Perumpanarruppadai cites about the dance stage: "நாடக மகளிராடுகளத் தெடுத்த வீசிவீங் கின்னியங் கடுப்ப" - (பெரும்பாணாற்றுப்படை) Pattinappalai also cites about drama: "பாடலோர்ந்தும் நாடகம் நயந்தும்" - (பட்டினப்பாலை) Koothu is mentioned in Sangam poems like Kuruntokai (குறுந்தொகை) and Kalitogai (கலித்தொகை). Koothu was performed in honor of the young soldier who had fought valiant and returned victorious. A form of koothu was performed as a ritual to aggrieve the valiant death of the chief. Starting Tolkappiyam, Isai Nunakkam (இசை நுணுக்கம்) of Sikhandi, Pancha Marabu (பஞ்சமரபு) of Arivanar, Bharata Senapatiyam (பரதசேனாபதியம்) of Adivayilar, Kootta Nool (கூத்தநூல்) of Sathanar and Muruval (முறுவல்), Sayandam (சயந்தம்), Guna Nool (குணநூல்), Seyirriyam (செயிற்றியம்) -- whose authors not known-- "have defined the grammar of classical dance and music". Kootha Nool, compiled by Sathanar, is an ancient treatise on dramaturgy which has nine chapters devoting to two different subjects ‘Suvai’ (சுவை ) and ‘Thogai.’ (தொகை). It focuses on tripartite arts of dance, music and drama. Scholars believe that this work formed the basis for Bharata’s Natyashastra. Natyashastra’ (நாட்டியசாஸ்த்திரா) by the sage Bharatha Muni (பரதமுனி) sets the grammar for dance. Therefore it was being aptly termed as Bharatanatyam during 1940s. [ The name given and popularized by Theosophical Society & Rukmini Devi - Different Story 🤷🏽♂️ ] Earlier it was known as Chatir-attam. The date of Natyashastra and Bharatanatyam is not yet resolved.( somewhere between 200 BCE. and 200 CE. ) However scholars assign the date of Bharata Muni to Sangam period. Abhinav Bharati (10th century AD) of Abhinavgupta, commentary on Natya Shastra also known as Natya-Vedam, clearly brings out the basic concepts of the Natyashastra. In southern part of India you can clearly see the stage by stage development of Bharatanatyam. ONE MORE THING. we called Bharatanatyam not because of Sage Bharatha Muni. but some of Sangam literatures referred as Bharatanatyam and the main reason is the people who performed Bharatanatyam in earlier ages, the last ones are Paratthaiyar (பரத்தையர்).
I never imagined you are a telugu guy. I was so ignorant and judgemental. Do we still have people in telugu states who's not fallen to caste and political groupism? Happy to see you bro.

My biggest regret of my life is so far that I didn't get the chance to learn Bhartnatyam, I did learn 'western' styles of dance while growing up because according to my parents that was suitable for me as a boy, in that same dance institution they thaught Bharatnatyam too, but even after so many requests my family didn't allow me to learn and experience the most beautiful dance form (in my opinion) Bhartnatyam. Now I am 17 so unfortunately I don't think that I will be able to learn it now.
Wow..very beautifully xplained ..Sir , can you please make videos on indian major languages like Tamil, Telugu , kannada ,Sanskrit .their history ..etc ..I get lot of controversies in internet . If this s already done ,please highlight the link .
Sanskritam is the mother of all languages in the world. Almost all Indian languages originated from Sanskritam including Tamil. Kannada and telagu originated from Malayalam. Malayalam originated directly from Sanskritam.
@@hsram1985 I doubt kannada and malyalam originated from malyalam .I see no traces from malyalam .Tamil is entirely not from Sanskrit .New Tamil , yes there are some traces to Sanskrit bit not old tamil . Tamil nd malyalam are related .kanada nd telugu are related .
@@naga5583 Adi Tamil born out Sanskritam. That's why more than 50 % words in Adi Tamil is Sanskritam. Old Malayalam is 80 % sanskrit. Grammar rules of Sanskrit and Malayalam came from Panani. Malayalam was a language of Danavas. 54 alphabets of Sanskrit has a deep meaning. It's a triple intersection of Shriyantra mandala. Malayalam has 54 alphabets. Old Kannada and telagu has same. See, Danava civilization is back bone of hindu civilization. King mahabali, virochana, hiranya kashapu, swarabhanu, prahlad are some commonly known Danava kings. Sage vyasa, kashyapa, guru shukracharya, Aryabhatta, adishankaracharya few commonly known sages. Pandavas and kauravas were Danavas. King bharath son of sukanya was a Danava. Danava sages who settle down in the banks of river saraswati wrote down the vedas after oral route of more than forty thousand years. These Danava civilization spread out of South India. 6000 years ago after the war of kurukshetra vishnu avatar parashuram saved the vedas. The brahmins who knew vedas and tantra on oral route followed him. They are nambodiris of kerala. Original brahmins of hindu civilization. Technical details and logic clearly says kannada and telagu born out of Malayalam. Tamil has no alphabets of sanskrit. It's a inferior to sanskrit. Tamil has no connection with kannada and telagu directly. These connections rooted in Sanskritam. Tamils have good culture. Fake Tamil pride cocked up by invaders damaged Indian history a lot. Today these fake Tamil pride is foreign funded to distort Indian history. Malayalam and Tamil is more than 12000 years old. Kannada and telagu has history of more than 3000 years old. 54 alphabets of Sanskritam is nothing but a sound body of OM that is shabda BrahmAn . These 54 alphabets are seed sounds and rooted in primordial frequencies of the cosmos. Hindus must know Hinduism properly.

🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏 thanks for making Annayya
What I feel is Damru means destruction as whatever this gets demolished creats sound and fire is source of creation. Earth soil contains gold and other minerals but they can be obtained and purified only with fire. I may be wrong in my enterpretation but this what i feel.
The intro beat gives goose bumps !!
Thank you so much....
Got a different view from what I thought earlier about Bharatnatyam..thanks for ending the ignorance ..
Bring part 2 asap
My biggest regret of my life is so far that I didn't get the chance to learn Bhartnatyam, I did learn 'western' styles of dance while growing up because according to my parents that was suitable for me as a boy, in that same dance institution they thaught Bharatnatyam too, but even after so many requests my family didn't allow me to learn and experience the most beautiful dance form (in my opinion) Bhartnatyam. Now I am 17 so unfortunately I don't think that I will be able to learn it now.
Dont give up. Follow your heart.
You can still.you are only 17
@@kalpanaa831 Yeah but now my family has become poor and after 12th I don't think I'd find time to persue my hobbies.
If you are really passionate about something universe will certainly make it possible for you.Don't worry.
Excellent work ..... Please tell how can I support your works.....
Waiting eagerly for part 2 ♥️

हमारी संस्कृति के पुनरूत्थान हेतु ऐसे प्रयास आवश्यक हैं।🙏🙏

And as always thanks for posting 🙏 Namaskaram 🙏
You have an attractive voice.
Sir pls make a video on Rishi bharadwaj's vaimanika shastra
Waiting for your video for the last 13 days
Hats off for your knowledge
The description about the art of Bharatha Natyam is very wonderful. It's a great pleasure to hear about the origin, history, significane and much more about the art. The form of the art defined from the bottom to top. I do love the way of narration. I'm much interested to know more about our culture and history. Thanks for your great job💯.
