Sita is quoted making a telling statement in the ramayana when tribal women in the forest ask her who among Ram and Laxman is her man. “The savarna is my husband, the gaur is my devar.” Sita uses the term Savarna to signify dark skin. 6:00 That's true, in my own family I can see those colour variations. I am from state of Uttarakhand and in ancient times people have migrated to hilly areas specially many Brahmin families. Even Juyal brahmins came from Maharashtra.

@@TheEmissaryCo Yeah, I'm working on it. Nice to see the perception changing at least a bit, with actors like Sethil Ramamurthy and Dhanush getting roles in Bollywood and Hollywood movies
PS: I'm not a fan of class systems, but I'm wondering if what's described in the Rig Veda is something more like a typical Indo-European tribe coming from the North-West and conquering territory, adding a native class to their typical Indo-European tripartite class system then dying out, because the natives outnumbered them. After all, the Sanskrit language is so close to European languages; the descriptions of the gods such as Indra, the thunder god, sound so much like Germanic Thor; and there's nothing really about reincarnation in the Rig Veda. It's more about conquest and adventure, horse sacrifices and drinking an intoxicating drink. Just looking at it from the perspective of an outsider, what's described in the Rig Veda sounds more akin to Viking or Scythian culture than say the culture of Sankara or Ramanuja. Thoughts?
I admire your work and what you are doing for the Indian diaspora. With this video discussing varna and colourism and how it’s a modern phenomenon… how do you square it with genetic research that shows upper caste people generally have greater amounts of ANI ancestry? And how do you interpret David Reich’s critical work on the genetics of caste? One way I could see it but not sure, is that possibly shudras as a specific group only became relevant in Gupta times. It’s problematic because there is mixed evidence as to where the term originates. Razib khan says castes genetic groups became rigid during Gupta times. You showed a table at 24:50, I know you said this stuff is used for hatred. With a complex answer if required, I’m keen to hear how you actually square these research findings. Would you say that while in very ancient times dark skin was admired and presumably did not correlate with caste DNA substructure, the stochastic effects of British caste Jati and varna systemization slowly drifted into a genetic colour pyramid from their unconscious biases? How do you interpret all this?
I should’ve put it in there, but a good contrast is colonial caste in Latin America. Skin color was highly stratified and hyper conscious with even art depicting the gradient. This isn’t really there in India or isn’t as popularized vs the writing and art we have depicting or appreciating dark skin. As for genetic stuff, Razib is a good friend and I have no issues with actual genetics research on this type of stuff. Issue is that many ethnic supremacists use those DNA ratios as material for ethnic supremacy as dumb as it sounds. Steppe % being a proximity for whiteness -> better “stock.”
@@TheEmissaryCo I agree with you that people reduce it to a ridiculous “steppe percentage” im-higher-than-you-so-that makes-me-better narrative So in your opinion (and I know Razib is your friend. I browse brown pundits and listen to him) how do you interpret the actual findings? Like you must know and feel that the cognitive dissonance is so real when you consider that which results from the narrative that foreign invaders have confused our ancient Hindu roots and what things like varna actually represented was bastardized being compared to things that appear real but are hard to explain like caste groups having real genetic differences. The problem is there isn’t much evidence either way. India was hot, the Indus Valley disappeared and we can’t read or know much about them, the Vedic Indians didn’t really write, and our oldest temples were destroyed… so it is so hard to understand clearly whether ancient Indians would be able to recognise us at all and where our story of “Indianness” really Originates

I want to make my own channel explaining American extremist politics to Telugu people, with your channel as my inspiration. I thought Telugu people would find things like the Unabomber manifesto or Cliven Bundy's case quite hilarious. May I request that you perhaps make one or 2 occasional episodes involving well-educated diaspora having conversations about these types of topics? I feel like most diaspora-focused content is quite superficial, and disconnected from our ancestral backgrounds, mothertongues, and regions. I also worry you must be projecting our Westernized understanding of skin color onto Kashmiris, Khalistanis and Northeasterners. Has the iconic Zoramthanga himself even talked about skin color politics at all? What about the other NE insurgency leaders? All Indian politicians including secessionists have lots of content out there, especially if you are multilingual. Please don't present false narratives without evidence as there is already a flood of false narratives because politics. AFAIK only the Dravida separatists really embraced any colonial-era racial ideas. But urban identity and nationalism in all the South Indian states is heavily ethnolinguistic and so racialist ideologies were always secondary or tertiary to language, federalism, development, and issues of ethnic/national identity.
the skin color stuff isn't said via separatist leaders, but it is def a thing in average ground level separatists. The diversity of India is great. Do Indians really want to be like boring China, Japan or Korea with its racial homogeneity?
india will stay diverse no doubt!
Yes
Would have been great if India was also as wealthy and organised as those countries.
WOW! Loved the video. I want to say that the Aryan Migration Theory for the most part is debunked and is considered just another one of the Western propaganda to promote their white skin supremacy. There is however a new theory called the 'Out of India' Theory. Would love it if you could do some research about it :) You really deserve more subs and likes. Your channel is too underrated!! I especially love how you didn't shy away from highlighting the Muslim Invasion and its barbaric brutality, many skip it in fear of the Muslims. There is a serious need to revisit Indian history and re-write it. Now, from an Indian standpoint!
Really no one takes out of indian theory seriously.
@@ShivanshThakur-sh8ub Doesn't make it false :) Its a "theory"
Let’s see how the theories compete over time!
@@axzieal9808 It is irrelevant really.
@@axzieal9808 It is a ridiculous theory. Proto Indo Europeans are the biggest evidence for AMT or AIT. Everyone talks about Islamic brutality, but I would say that the caste system is more brutal as it is invisible and still persistent.

Superb detailing, keep it up this work and deeper dive for next one also so that we couldn't ashamed of ourselves as a bharatiya. Thanks.

I agree with this completely but I do think you slightly over-glorified pre-Islamic Indians, we have evidence of come intercaste colourism and even though there was also glorification of dark skin in some cultures, the same existed with light skin in others. Its a small point because this did not affect India's current colourism which comes primarily from the british and from the turks but i thought it was something to mention. amazing video though
It will be easier for us to understand if you can give us examples of intercaste colourism.
That’s a fair point!!
Nicely made video, almost all points are discussed. Better than any other video ever made on this issue.

It's really hard being a dark-skinned Indian. I can't stand looking into the mirror because I'm absolutely disgusted by and ashamed what I see. Not to mention how I'm treated by others. It's nice to know that if I were born a few thousand years earlier, I would be the beauty standard.

Wow. Great one 👍

A very interesting presentation, thank you!
Thoughts?
Thank you too!
@@TheEmissaryCo I agree with you that people reduce it to a ridiculous “steppe percentage” im-higher-than-you-so-that makes-me-better narrative
So in your opinion (and I know Razib is your friend.
India was hot, the Indus Valley disappeared and we can’t read or know much about them, the Vedic Indians didn’t really write, and our oldest temples were destroyed… so it is so hard to understand clearly whether ancient Indians would be able to recognise us at all and where our story of “Indianness” really
Originates

This is a little unrelated, but could you please look into doing a video on Dravidianism and Tamil Chauvinism? I really hate seeing these plague my community and spread hatred and disunity. People are saying BS like "Tamils are not Hindu" or "Tamils are not Indian". Good video, but it's a bit biased. There have been genetic studies that show certain genetic affinity tied to caste. Especially skin color. I agree this shouldn't be used as a tool for division, just like how caste shouldn't be used or language for that matter
Genetic affinity is tied to caste yes, but the skin color aspect isn’t as salient as say compared to regional differences.
Only for certain caste/regions is it probably more relevant

I've spoken to them and in vernacular they do skin color jibes at Indians, but will not speak so in english or irl really.
But def you should go into covering indian/telugu politics! And yah one day I'll do diaspora focused stuff.
The Natyashastra says to depict Brahmins and Kshatriyas in a Pale color. (Gaura) and the Vaishyas and Shudras as a Darker color.

@@TheEmissaryCoso hindusim is a regional religion?
Nope. "Gaur" refers to reddish-yellow colour (mixture of red + yellow primary colours clearly described as such in Natya shatra). This has nothing to do with skin tone but a reflection of the theorized attributes or qualities of the varnas.
