    • @musek5048
      @musek5048 5 років тому +6

      well when you consider that pagani's engines are built by AMG while koenigsegg makes their own engines AND transmissions then yes he is on a different level called innovation.

    They have to weight up the opposite side of the wheel to the valve because the proportion of the weight is so high a VALVE takes it out of balance.

    • @martin_in_the_alps

      The outbalancing valve is a problem on every car rim, no matter how heavy the wheels are.

    • @Tedowski
      @Tedowski 10 років тому

      Most tires have a colored dot on the sidewall to indicate it's light spot. You line that up with the valve stem on the wheel to compensate.

  • @v_alexiadis
    @v_alexiadis 10 років тому +86

    This is art. Simply amazing! I know it would be far from profitable for Koenigsegg but I'd love to see them in F1.

    • @christinefury7839
      @christinefury7839 10 років тому +3

      They lack the experience and even well funded teams with several times the budget of Koenigsegg can't score points, let alone be competitive.
      F1 is far more competitive and you have to constantly develop the car from race to race and do lots of testing and simulations. A roadcar doesn't need to be rushed in time for a race.

    • @v_alexiadis
      @v_alexiadis 10 років тому +10

      Christine Fury They have the innovation though and obviously the brains. I think it would be very interesting to see provided they got the financial aspect covered.

    • @christinefury7839
      @christinefury7839 10 років тому

      ianiva First they've got to successfully race any of their roadcars before we can talk about entering F1. Reynard had years of experience building really good chassis in F3000 and CART/IndyCar all of which won championships, but when they entered F1 in 1999 with BAR they didn't win a single race in 6 seaasons trying.
      Most people think that Carl Haas is foolish for trying to design a F1 car in the USA, as pretty much all the team and experts are in the UK (this includes Red Bull and Mercedes).
      So let's not get ahead of ourselves.

    • @v_alexiadis
      @v_alexiadis 10 років тому +2

      Christine Fury Yes but Koenigsegg is in a whole different level when it comes to innovation, know-how and attention to detail. I'm not saying they would win right away. I'm saying that, for me, it would interesting to see it.

    • @christinefury7839
      @christinefury7839 10 років тому +11

      ianiva " Yes but Koenigsegg is in a whole different level when it comes to innovation, know-how and attention to detail." Ok, elaborate. I think you have been carried away by Mr.Koenigsegg's business talk. They are no different than Pagani, Tesla or even General Motors for that matter. The last Corvette was "innovative" too and at least had the racing success to back it up.
      Is there any innovation Koenigsegg have pioneered themselves? Like Lotus pioneered monocoque chassis in Formula 1, the ground-effect cars and the engine as a stressed member of the chassis? Is Mr.Koenigsegg a modern day Marc Birkigt? I doubt you have even heard of him. Name one thing Koenigsegg invented which other car manufacturers will be using from now on?
      I applaud Koenigsegg for becoming an independent supercar maker in world where most are just kit-car makers modifying already existing chassis, strapping in a tuned engine and hardly ever getting a car sold. He deserves all praise. But they are making a big deal out of selling an IPad with a slightly bigger screen or one that is slightly lighter. Pardon my analogy. Carbon wheels is nothing new yet people here go absolutely ballistic as if it was some great, new innovation. They could be purchased by the public for superbikes in the early 90's.
      For a small supercar manufacturer where longevity is still a huge question mark and most are sold to wealthy Middle Easteners, with more money than wits, it's some bold assumption to think they could make it in F1 even if they had the funds to do so.
      Like I said before: First they've got to race in sportscar racing, even a privately entered team.
      " Yes but Koenigsegg is in a whole different level when it comes to innovation, know-how and attention to detail." I'm afraid that comes across as a subjective opinion (which you have every right to) until you can include some objective facts and arguments with which to back up your claim. "Koenigsegg look awesome, sound awesome and are really fast, which is also really awesome but I'm going to use big words like innovative, know-how and attention to say that instead."

    great video, i cant recall where i heard it but i believe due to the rotation effects wheels are 10 times heavier than what they actually weigh on a car so every gram you save is 10 grams effectively, I hope some cheaper material is designed that can be injection molded or something so cheaper versions of light wheels can be made

    • @jgto17
      @jgto17 10 років тому +8

      I believe it's more like 4 times, but still, a significant weight reduction when saved as unsprung weight.

    • @jgto17
      @jgto17 10 років тому +14

      ***** Turns out you're right:
      The laws of physics rule here. Energy is needed to bring the wheel/tire mass up to speed (mph) and to spin it to the related rpm. Consider a lighter tire/wheel combo:
      m = mass reduction
      I = inertia reduction
      w = rotational speed
      v = car speed
      r = tire radius
      E = total energy saved by mass reduction "m"
      ^2 = squared
      E = 1/2 m v^2 + 1/2 I w^2
      E = E(speed) + E(rotation)
      Rotary Inertia is the sum of each bit of mass times it's radius squared. If all the mass reduction is at the tire OD (the theoretical but not practical limit), the inertia reduction is the maximum possible value:
      I = r^2 m
      The relation between car speed and tire rpm:
      v = r w
      Combine 3 equations above:
      E = 1/2 m v^2 + 1/2 (r^2 m) (v/r)^2
      E = 1/2 m v^2 + 1/2 (m) (v)^2
      E = 2 x E(speed) ... the 2X limit
      So if you drop 10 lbs per corner, the net total weight savings is 4 x 17 = 68 lbs. For a 3700 lb car and driver, that's only a 1.8% change.
      The main benefit of reducing wheel/tire or any unsprung weight is handling and comfort, by increasing the tires ability to keep good contact with the road. Total unsprung weight might be 80 lbs per corner, and 10 lbs would be a 13% change ... very significant.
      -------------------------------------------------
      If just a 17" or 18" wheel is 10 lb lighter (reuse same tires), then the total net savings is about 13 lbs. The rotational part is 3 lbs.

      Koenigsegg actually have a wheel that sucks air out of wheel house. They have carbon fiber spokes with titanium/aluminum rims. They were bladed as well. But Koenigsegg found that the unguided air exiting the rim spoiled the air along its way toward the flanks of the car, thus increasing drag. So for top speed runs they of course won't do very well, but for track purposes they'd theoretically do very well entering corners.
