I think we ought to keep our constitution free from race. Recognition of one race over another is in itself racist.
We are not even included in our own country’s constitution, because colonisers thought Aboriginal people didn’t even have to right to be classified as humans! It was about righting wrongs from the past but yet again Australia shows it’s true racist colours! sad really
Agree. I also see the irony of being told 90% of Indigenous people wanted it, yet places with the biggest Indigenous population (like NT) voted No.

I asked him the same question. Australia ISNT a racist country, the polls showed that NO one wanted this, including aboriginals. Because it was racist to identify only one race and it would tell all aboriginals and the world that aboriginals were failures in life, even if they tried, and would always need handouts. Which is completely untrue. Always has been. A.ways will be.

People were hassled, abused, yelled at, hectored and threatened if they didn't vote YES, so they quietly took the bloody YES brochures and went in and voted NO. Why is it a surprise to you mate? Even The Northern Territory didn't want it as it divided the country and made us look riduclous. Albanese wanted a fuzzy warm Legacy Project but he failed badly. He will be remembered forever as the man who divided Australians. He will never recover from this!
Australians might not recover from the absurd coverage of foreign media like the BBC that calls us racist.

Forcing Australians to sign a blank cheque was the PM’s chosen method, he stayed that corse every step. HE SHOULD GO NOW!!!
I agree that the PM, government, and media, electoral Commission did not properly show literal words of proposal before hand. And to have such a big NO is a direct result of it.
@@divyanshugogna6152 Didn't help that the Yes leaders tried to deflect whenever the question of more details or how it would work etc came up by either saying to look it up (where you get contradicting information from the Yes camp) or to imply that you are a racist simply for questioning and should implicitly trust the 'experts' blindly. Didn't help when the PM tried to paint that it was simply an advisory body while the architects and the crybaby aboriginal affairs minister was recorded admitting that it would give power to making treaties (which would likely have recompense clauses).

This referendum was literally asking the australian public to agree to play a game but without knowing the rules of the game.

That's not a shock... What may be shocking is that people believed the media hype that people were overwhelmingly voting yes. The lesson here is to realise that the majority of Australians are not media lead. That we are not easily swayed.

It was a disgusting proposal and I'm very proud of Australia and this 0/6 result.
The highest NO votes are from areas that have the most aboriginal people. I don't know any aboriginals that voted yes, means you don't get to rural areas much. Your 80% is old and flawed and debunked on youtube commentary. The issue was due to lies from the government. 10% of the current senators are aboriginal. Representation is already there. Interestingly, most voted NO.
I'm for putting an acknowledgement of first nation people in the constitution that's descriptive but not binding; but against an irrevocable lobby group who's accountable to no one and who's powers and composition has not even been properly defined
You didn't understand the structure clearly.
Their powers are they can say things to the government. The lack of definition is because the government of the day (your elected representitives) will decide on the structure and funding. That's to ensure they aren't "too powerful". It's likely something no voters would have criticized if it weren't the case.

If the Constitution is going to acknowledge the first inhabitants, it should also acknowledge the 270 ethnic groups that now comprise Australia.

This is also a result that ,as you correctly pointed out Renato, 45 referendums with only 8 positive results mean that the people will not tolerate being told only half the story. Aussies are waking up to the Constitution and are starting to look seriously at whether or not our representatives in our Parliament are actually abiding by the strict letter of the Constitutional contract. I have personally been showing the Constitution to people in public meetings for over 20 years and can guarantee that people are waking up and will be resisting the rhetoric that they and their forefathers have been fed for generations. There is so much to heal between the current Political stand and what the Constitution dictates and it is refreshing to have come across your channel. Even you have made some mistakes but lets all move towards making a great Nation with people who understand, according to the Constitution, what those in Government can and cannot do when they represent the people in the peoples Parliament.

Hardly a shock when Albo said on his opening speech a year ago "if we give you all the details nobody would vote for it". We'll he now learned an important lesson, if you don't give out any details, just touchy feely vibes.... PEOPLE STILL WON'T VOTE FOR IT! When activists are held to account, asked to explain their theory's and people are given a direct say on the matter, it's no surprise they reject these ideas. The bigger story should be that activists have created the division, are trying to blame it on other people, and have been selling snake oil to all Australians just so that they can get their extreme ideology into government which is based on race and power. 60% of Australians said "Let's move forward together not divided!" But I'm sure that won't sell clicks and views, so now we are and will get bombarded with accusations of racism and any other ism that just is blatantly not true!
It won't work, they won't guilt people into this, it's the worst thing they could do now.
I think due to our multi-culturalism, Aussies are a pragmatic bunch.........mostly.......... this was never explained enough, didn't seem sensible enough, not many people I know are going to say to the Govt "Yeah, do what you want"
Albo says it has no power, his minister then says it's the first step to treaty, then Mayo says "pay the rent", who do we believe? Do they even know? What even is treaty?

@brendonmackay4861 everyone I know who voted no had stories about indigenous Australians they know and admire. We are already moving forward but these political activists won't allow this gradual togetherness, I would go as far as saying that they are causing more racism, but of course it's not about race to them but about power. I say that because of they look around there are examples of us moving forward together everywhere, it's just that broken people won't see that, so I choose to listen to those that aren't blinded by hate and hurt.
Plus I dont listen to news or media. And I think this is the case with more and more people. We just dont listen to the propaganda anymore. We've just stopped being tuned. Sick of it
Would like to know why AEC were not able to remove all the purple yes vote signs at polling booths? I asked them about signs. They knew they were wrong but were told to do nothing. What are our rights regarding removing the signs! I began to remove them and was accosted by yes people.

omg approximately 61% of Australian Citizens voted no for good reason. We are one of the greatest multicultural countries in the world with laws that protect all peoples of this country thanks to a democratic society based on Westminster principles. The main reasons NO succeeded in my opinion is 1/ The constitution is for all Australians regardless of race and when you became a citizen. 2/ We were ask to vote on a voice with no details on how it would end up being structured and how it would really improved the most marginalised of this country. 3/ A lot of voters for the NO would like to see acknowledgement of first Nations people enshrined in the constitution but based on Treaty and truth telling. 4/Approximately 40 % of fist Nations people did vote NO. 5/ The Yes campaign was unable to belay the fears surrounding the Voice even though it is reported they had $100 million dollars to do so compared with $13 million for the NO, and most major corporate, sporting bodies and celebrities also saying vote yes. 6/ The government still went ahead with the referendum dividing the country with no bi partisan support. No referendum of the 45 we have had ever got up without this.
The Prime Minister speaks from both sides of his mouth. He calls for “kindness” (code for voting Yes), but mocked the No camp as “chicken little”, and imputed that they are racist. He calls for reconciliation but lash out at the No campaigners.
No one was going to say they were votihg no, the bullying was bad.
It's probably shocking for those who believe that people of a certain race must vote a certain way, or that people of a certain race are stereotypically unable to think or fend for themselves without being told how by someone 'more qualified'. My reading of the results is that 60% of Australians (all types) understand that, while not perfect, the Constitution is not as bad as some, and that changing it to make one man famous is not a good idea. That same 60% also recognise that there are many people of all backgrounds doing it tough and the mechanisms to help are in place already, if only the self-important bureaucrats in control of the money would do their jobs.

Absolutely! The average Aussie battler who works their arse off and pays high taxes haven’t complained about all of the money that has gone to Aboriginals with no accountability! However, in these difficult financial times to be asked to give even more $ in the form of a blank cheque or be called Racist was too much! Disagree that the NO has anything to do with past Referendums. Each would be considered on its own merits!!

This result was exactly what should of been expected, the polls have been showing for months the Voice was going to lose badly everywhere.

If it had of been about recognition in the constitution, it would have come in with a landslide victory.
Albo is responsible for the voice part of the referendum, it was his baby, not the elders, and the people didn't want it, they felt it was unfair.
Time to figure out where the money is going and sort the actual problems out, hopefully this gets that going and we can close the gap, because 99% of Australians want that.

can confirm as someone who lives in a city can confirm dont live in a 'gated community' (how is that relevant, sorry?). Why was it 'obvious' because you live amongst indigenous folk? Indigenous people....who ACTUALLY LIVE WITH OTHER INDIGENOUS PEOPLE wanted yes. Data shows that the less educated, older, less money and greater distance you are to a capital city the more likely you were to vote no. Colour me SHOOK.

My gated community comment was implying that these people in the elecotrates in and around big cities that had the highest percentage of yes voters have never been victimised or even seen what happens in indigenous communities.
I live in one of the most dangerous indigenous communities in australia working security at a womens shelter. Ive not only seen the violence but also been at the receiving end of it like having spears thrown at me for defending battered women. But nobody hears about that and when it does get out there its palmed off as a right wing conspiracy.

Passing a referendum in Oz has a dismal record, only 8 times has one been passed.
and each of those 8 times where a Referendum had passed, is when there was bipartisan agreement.
The only place for Yes was the Canberra bubble, full of people on the public purse voting to get more people on the public purse.

The dynamic of this referendum was all wrong.....politicised along party lines. And for that, one can only blame the PM as the architect and initiator of the process.

I was expecting 4 states to vote No, and 2 States to vote yes, I was also expecting both territories to vote in favour the Voice to Parliament, and I was also expecting the popular vote to be closer.
the Yes Campaign lost this referendum months ago, and the Yes Campaign only have themselves to blame, they were condescending, arrogant and dysfunctional in their messaging. While their ground game was good, which wouldn't be too hard, considering the fact that the No Camp didn't have anywhere near the resources the Yes Camp had, and they still managed to lose it.
with all the money that they poured into this campaign, and now they have nothing to show for, they really only have themselves to blame, too many conflicting messages, and the optics of the last 3-4 months simply didn't help them in any capacity.

How would they have accurate statistics on indigenous votes when they did not ask that question. They asked for your name & you ticked a box there was no box asking you to identify if you were indigenous or not. Also they had signs saying 80% of indigenous people wanted the YES vote based on what statistics?

Newspoll and Redbridge polls were showing around 39% yes, so it was expected.
The polling two weeks out have zero states for Yes. I picked the margin, too 40/60.
In regards to the ACT. Sure, greater levels of higher education but so was The Third Reich.
It is time to bring in DNA testing! If you haven't got a grandparent who is aboriginal then you aren't Aboriginal!

In the context, if you were paying attention, it’s not shocking at all. Their campaign was awful. It lacked detail and relied on peer pressuring and virtue signalling. Works well for some initiatives, but not for this. You can’t rely on posters and cute ad campaigns to win in this context. They failed to provide detail and it ended their chances as a result
They just made cringe annoying long yes ads. All the no ads I saw were 5 seconds where as the YES ads said a lot of words without really saying anything

I think it was at a time of trust not being there for the public and its governments going all the way down from federal, state, to local. I’m not saying this was the main reason but voters have unrest and are sick of feeling attacked for how they feel or want to feel.

What do you mean by finishing the video on a "positive note"? This sort of judgmentalism is what caused the Yes campaign to collapse well before the polling booths opened.
From everyone else’s point of view they get special treatment because their ancestors were here before ours were which means nothing. Stop the gravey train system, welcome them to the 21st century where everyone has to work to survive and struggle, not just them.

The NT voted No because they don’t want any part of being Australian? They demand separation and treaty, not subjugation by our constitution.
Regarding the difficulty of achieving successful constitutional referendums, are there any breakdowns analysing the type of questions and how well the proposed change has been drafted or communicated?
I can see on the surface to many in and outside of Aus that it may look like this result shows Aus is racist, but this vote was so much more complicated than just a question of adding a note of recognition to the constitution.
From the beginning I felt the proposal wasn't strong and was bound to raise questions that were not being answered.

I predicted this result in 2022. Th question was flawed despite the intention being commendable. I agree with recognition of First Nations people in the Constitution. I suggest a Treaty is necessary.
The referendum is an example of democracy at work. The people of Australia have a right to choose what they consider an appropriate change to the constitution. Overwhelmingly the Australian people have rejected the proposal. Lessons need to be learned from this referendum.

the voice was dead in the water from the start, the yes side didn't make a strong enough appeal to the people to explain why a Yes vote was important, many simply believed they just had to say it was about acceptance and writing wrongs of the past and the people would all accept and vote Yes. Meanwhile the No side spread so much misinformation and fear, majority of the fear they spread was about housing, rent, cost of living. All things that are at the front of voters minds as we are in a crisis thanks to the last 10 years of Liberal government. The No vote used that fear to perfectly sway a majority No vote.
yes there werent any details about the voice, but this was about constitution, everything in the constitution is very vague and then the government make legislation to enact it, this was the part of voting that neither side was open about.
It does beg the question though, would the vote have gone differently if it was to just add to the constitution, recognition of the Indigeonous people being the traditional owners, without an enshrined advisory body.
What misinformation, the NO side stated f you don't know what is in it, vote no. Just listening to Thomas Pay the Rent Mayo and Megan Davis, one could discern it was about reparations and treaty. The Voice would have given Indigenous Australians - and their descendants for all time - a second method of influencing public policy that goes beyond the benefits of representative democracy that are already enjoyed by all citizens regardless of race.
It would have constitutionalised a lobby group of Indigenous representatives , equipped with a separate bureaucracy, who would have been given the ability to have an additional say on every law and administrative decision, not just those relating specifically to Aborigines and Torres Strait Islanders. Think of it as an indigenous “crown”.
