  • The Voice Referendum has been defeated.
    The Voice to Parliament proposal was voted down in a majority of key states, including South Australia.
    The only territory to return a majority 'Yes' vote was the ACT.
    The referendum also failed to receive a majority of votes across the country, falling short with a projected percentage of 55%.
    Today's landmark vote means a federal advisory board to parliament including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People will not be enshrined in the constitution.

      As an Australian who's ancestors came as convicts, I totally agree. I see you, an Aboriginal Australian, no more or no less Australian than me - we are both Australians, and the moment you start having parliamentary influence, special rules or dare I say it racism based on your heritage then it is a sad day for Australia. What was done in the past was terrible, but I have always seen skin color, heritage, gender and sexuality as nothing more than a part of who any person is, and I will treat every person the same no matter who they are. I was on the yes bandwagon until I saw a youtube video where Aboriginal people in remote communities were interviewed about the Voice and many had never even heard of it. One person said 'No one's asked us what we want or need' and someone else asked where the billions of dollars allocated to Aboriginal affairs is going because their community hasn't seen a cent.

    3.3% of Australians are indigenous. 4.8% of federal parliamentarians are indigenous. Indigenous people have a voice a very powerful one. Each time an indigenous parliamentarian steps outside Parliament House the media makes sure we hear them. Over $30 billion per year is spent on indigenous affairs. And there is no one disputing or arguing that. Free healthcare, education and other affirmative action are already very effective for indigenous people. I think the clincher was when the pro hamas rally occurred at the Sydney Opera house, aboriginal flags were amongst those being waved in unison with the hamas, whilst the crowd were shouting "gas the jews".
    No attempt from the aboriginals to remove their alliance with hamas. A resounding NO vote sufficed.

      There's so many reasons to vote no (as someone who voted yes). Division via race is not one of them. We're already divided by race in this country to the detriment of First Nation's peoples, if successful this voice to parliament could help those indigenous communities that desperately need it. As someone who voted no, who knows those who voted yes. What mattered to me most was not their choice, but that it wouldn’t divide us. My sentiment remains the same in reference to this. Why be divided, when we can be one? Proud of Australia right now; with the majority. Hoping we can use this as a stepping stone forward. To set an example for a world that is currently struggling with division. May we remember that we are always stronger together… no matter what.

      @haydencantthink 9 місяців тому +1

      @@rceravolojnr The voice is to help Indigenous communities which are usually much worse off compared to non-indigenous communities.
