Fell so fast I never even knew it existed
Rax was well known- Ohio, western PA, WV. I recall eating at a few. It seemed like a Arby's or Roy Roger's 🤠 . Rax could not get the crowds like BK, Wendy's, KFC.
Rax was one of my childhood faves. Thanks for this video. After leaving the Charleston WV area in 1984 I’d lost track of them
Like several other franchise fast food places, Rax didn't vet their franchisee's very well. There were bad places and there were great places. The one in Burnsville Minnesota was one of the best roast beef restaurants there ever was. It was so good nobody would have ever believed it was possible that this franchise would ever go out of business. The Burnsville one was packed from 11am to 1pm and 3pm to 6pm. Like Burger King they should have vetted their franchisee investors more thoroughly, but they didn't, and it cost them everything.
As a former QSR manager I can definitely agree that's a huge problem in the industry. Sadly, too many franchisors are just glad to get $$$ thy they don't care if the franchisee is going to invest their time and money into being committed to making it work. Or worse yet, the franchisee just might be incompetent and incapable of making it work. My experience with Rax was just as a customer and that was only a few times. The store near where I lived (Florida) was poorly run. This was in the late 80s which was when Rax was having a bit of an identity crisis trying to add more and more things to the menu (I remember them trying an all-you-can-eat buffet similar to what Wendy's had tried about the same time, but done worse. Roast beef just seemed like an afterthought.
The biggest problem I saw with Rax is they had 101 menu items and did them all badly...
Believe it or not. One opened not to long ago in Park Layne Ohio.
Yeah, it's the green-roofed one the video uses anytime it's talking about Rax's decline. Because any picture of Park Layne can be used as a picture of economic failure, or even post-apocalyptic imagery.
Interesting story, but why do you have more still shots of Chik-Fil-A than rax? Did you think no one would notice?
I didn’t notice till you said something.then I watched the whole thing again and holy crap it’s 80% interior shots of Chick-fil-A! I guess he didn’t have many interior shots of rax
😂
In the late 70s/early 80s my friends and I were typical financially challenged college students. For us, Rax with its fine salad bar and reasonably priced sandwiches were fantastic. Our college dining room was closed Sunday nights so Rax became our go-to destination. If I recall correctly, the restaurant got good business.
Roy Rogers had the best fast-food roast beef sammichs. And the Fixin's Bar so you could put exactly what you wanted on it!
I worked at a Rax in Indianapolis in 85 and 86. I liked it better than Arby's.
I miss Rax. It was a good place to pick up some roast beef sandwiches on the way back to my mom's place when I was growing up.
Arby's has a good business model QSR. I ate at 1 near me then less often when I moved- 2017.
Raxs BBC was the best sandwich i ever had. Roast beef, bacon and cheddar was their signature sandwich. I found the one in Anderson, Indiana in 2011 and went to open the door only to learn it had closed for good the day before.
Downtown Anderson my hometown. We once had 3 Rax 2 turned into Arby's
@@truman77 When I saw the store had literally just closed just before I found it, I wanted to cry.
I enjoyed the history. In guess it was around 1980 when they open a location in Richardson, Texas. I was 17 and I was a full-service gas station attendant working about a half mile from there. I think this franchise was pulling out all the stops and trying to make a hit. The sandwiches were so great. Everything was so fresh and tasty. I would usually get 2 sandwiches at lunch, and one was always their BBC (beef, bacon & cheese on a roll). I vaguely remember the racks of fresh buns, and the beef was juicy and mouthwatering. I don't think any fast food I know of today could compete with how it was back then. I don't know when they shut that one down as I did not stay in that immediate area for long after that. About two decades later I found them in Ohio. The BBC sandwich brought back memories but were not nearly as good. It's a shame it is such a completive industry and quality is always compromised to stay in business. I think all fast food was better back then. The 70s and 80s were the best.
Ive switched timelines again, because ive lived all over this nation, I have NEVER seen or heard of this place, and vids on it keep popping up.
The Rax in Joliet hasn't changed a bit since the '80s.
Rax so much better than Arby's
As a kid, I remember seeing Rax in Louisville, KY, when we used to visit family. We never ate there. I just remembered the strange name.
I loved their weekend breakfast buffet. Don't know if it was company wipe or just a local franchise trying something to save themselves.
I used to stop at the Circleville Rax occasionally. Their beef & cheddar was better than Arby’s at an affordable cost. In 2019 or early 20 they decided to price match the competition up the street, and I almost had to mortgage a sandwich. Haven’t been since.
I love Rax roast beef hopefully they’ll come back
Why are some of your pictures on this video of chic fill a?
Most of them are. Guess he thought no one would notice? Should discourage this behavior and actively avoid subscribing to anyone who does this.
I never heard of Rax, but the food looks really good. I think Mr. Delicious definitely played a role in its demise because he was really creepy. Mr. D? My husband would not eat there LOL!
Rax is done. Arby's has already filled the vacuum left by Rax.
poorly
Kinda sad how much it’s declined from its heyday. It looks pretty empty in there.
I miss Rax
Bad management, like a bad POTUS, can absolutely destroy a once great organization or nation.
So sad. I liked Rax.
Never heard of Rex before that’s how bad it was yikes
Rax was quite good. I used to eat lunch at the Charleston, WV establishment quite often up until 2010 when I moved out of state. It was comparable to Arby's.
