That's true. After watching the video, I started thinking about all the games he missed and realized a list of 20 is just too small.. For me the top 3 (that are not on this list) are Sundered Eldritch edition, Slay the spire and RimWorld.
My personal favorite indie game has to be Hollow Knight, not unlike some others have said here. I honestly think it is a masterfully constructed game. The level of detail in the way everything is laid out over the world and how you can go in so many different ways is something I haven't seen in any other game, and I've been gaming for 35 years. There's also 20-30 hours of straight non-procedurally generated content. I'm genuinely confused that after the game did make an impact on you, you don't feel similarly, I can see why it might not be immediately likable, but ce la'vie. The story is so incredibly deep and well constructed with lore that rivals even the best AAA games.
I'll admit though that I have not played any of the games higher up than Hollow Knight on this list. I might try playing Journey with my 4 year old some time, and I do want to try both Dead Cells and Axiom Verge. My only concern with Dead Cells is that regular gameplay is supposedly harder than Hollow Knight. Having 3 kids under 5 makes it very hard to really get into challenging games. Even Hollow Knight is hard to get back to and play again once my middle child hit 2 and started requiring more time. The main indie games I have played recently are: The Messenger Minecraft Hollow Knight Shovel Knight Stardew Valley Terraria Starbound
@@chandez Yes, after playing through Dead Cells twice so far, I do think it is a bit overrated. It's fun, but it has a bit of an arcadey feel. It's also pretty short, other than being able to play through over and over again at harder difficulties, and I didn't find the variation in the levels to be that dramatic. Even weapon/item selection is fairly thin. What, about 8 different special items and a few dozen different weapons, all with a handful of different power levels. There's a fair amount of nuance, especially with the combat, but not a lot of total content or breadth. It would be nice to have some more variety in special items or loadout, as well as being able to have a small inventory. It would be nice too to have more passives and build customization options, because that's fairly thin. That said, I would definitely look forward to a Dead Cells 2, but I would hope it would be a little bit more like a rogue like adventure, less arcadey, with a significant amount more total content.

I have to agree with you there, if nothing else I would swap it with Axiom Verge. I convinced most of my friends to get Hollow Knight and one of the interesting game play features is how Team Cherry have made so many ways to get to your goal. For example, my one friend decided to grind and get the most expensive item in the shop, the lantern, which let him access the Crystal Peaks as his second area of the game. He then followed that trail right to the Dreamer statue and got the mid game item. Most of my other friends after killing the boss went into Greenpath and found Hornet. Everyone's path slowly diverged from there. Some ended up in the City of Tears, others went into Deepnest. I'd highly recommend checking out Mark Brown's Game Maker's Toolkit video about Hollow Knight's unique level design. But hey, I can accept that Hollow Knight doesn't feel perfect for everyone, of the 10 or so friends I convinced to buy Hollow Knight, 2 of them have yet to actually play it, even if they bought it just over a year ago. I played Axiom Verge and it was interesting, but of the two titles, I have only played one of them for ~200 hours. As far as Hollow Knight's difficulty, I always find it hard but fair, an actual challenge, which can be rare these days. Just about every challenge that I encountered starts as very difficult, but looking back on any one challenge, they never were too unbearable. I would beat something and then think to myself, "It couldn't get any harder than that!", and usually it did, but never at an unfair rate. (Sorry for the TED talk about how great Hollow Knight is...) I can't wait for the sequel coming out soon™.

@@neverpure20 i played bastion and enjoyed it but pyre was just incredible story telling with great art characters and an engaging battle mechanic. its nothing like bastion n transistor but i never played that one. there all so different from eachother, i hope u give it a go:)

I don t know about that first position, i would put hollow knight at first. Its way better than any game on the list, and clearly better than dead cells that i played and have no where near as many hours i have in hollow knight

Great selection, and it must have been really tough to chose between all the quality games that this decade had to offer. I think you could have added some Honorable Mentions ? Celeste is awesome. I love celeste with every cell of my body. It’s some of the most fun platforming i’ve played ever. The visuals are so pretty that I can’t even believe someone actually made them (especially in the last chapter that they added.) Now with all that said. Hollow Knight is better and should be number one.
@@thund3r94 dead cells is both more difficult (by a far margine) than celeste, and just as much if not more entertaining than celeste just no story really that's the only thing ill give celeste over dead cells
Oxenfree, Skullgirls, Bastion (all Supergiant Games really), Detention, Enter the Gungeon, Devil Daggers, Papers Please, Rogue Legacy, This War of Mine, Into the Woods, and Cuphead were titles I'd put on a best of the decade list and weren't mentioned here. I wasn't too fond of Her Story, Florence, The Witness, and Gorogoa. If I had to pick a title to sit on top it would either be Return of the Obra Dinn for its brilliant take on the detective genre or Hollow Knight for its flawless execution of the Metroidvania formula that bests every other title in the genre.
@@jorgeruesta9123 I'd suggest it, I haven't finished it yet, but it's really good so far. A huge amount of content, tight but fun controls, and a really good amount of challenge. It probably isn't everyone's cup of tea, but it's always a really good experience
@@thenuggernaut9084 I mean it is obviously a pretty good game, but i dont think i am a very patient guy, i like to get straight into action (as you can see from the games in my list). I loved mantis lords' and hornet's boss fight, but in a game like cuphead i do not have to explore or wait to enter awesome boss fights. It is just not my type of game, it happened the same with titles such as dark solus or bloodborne (incredible boss fights hidden behind exploration, which i dont enjoy).

@RagingThunder It's over rated in my opinion (just for my tastes) I feel it repetitive and not so innovative since Rogue Legacy did everything it did years before it. The only difference is that you can choose your approach, but it isn't in top 10 for me, maybe at the 30th place.
Many will say that Hollow Knight and Celeste should be much higher up on the list (myself included), but you can’t deny that every game in the spot above it absolutely deserved to be there. This is a fantastic list, really well done.
Edit: going through the video (great selection!) and the comment section gives you probably the best overview of the best indie games over the last ten years I've ever seen compiled in a UA-cam video. So many good games... All three Supergiant games are fantastic: Bastion, Transistor, Pyre. Also great and worth honourable mentions: FTL, Hotline Miami, papers please, this war of mine, hyper light drifter, darkest dungeon, ori and the blind forest. And then the one game that probably really deserves a spot in this list: Terraria!
people always forget that terraria is an indie game. and it works like hollow knight where they give a whole bunch of free updates(i think they either invented or popularized it)
There's quite a few from this list that I haven't played, so I can't say whether I agree or disagree with the entirety of your selection. That being said, I'd venture my favorite indie would be Hollow Knight. The gameplay was top notch, but what really got me with that one was the atmosphere. There was something in that rain-drenched, cute melancholy of HK that simply spoke to me in a way that few other games have ever done. The only one other game I would have included would be Stardew Valley. I spent so many hours with that game, planted so many fields and got in relationships with so many villagers that I have very 'real-feeling' memories from it. It's almost as if that town occupies a space in my mind that only real places do. Either way, beautiful video. Here's to a new decade filled with happiness and great indies for all.

GRIS is my favorite indie game so far. The ending was so overwhelming and powerful, I cried. But I also digged Dead Cells for it‘s fluid action gameplay. No crying tho 😬

For me the title goes to Oneshot. It is such an strong emtional and touching journey that at the end ( the real one) it did not felt like a game. It became part of me.
HOW CAN BASTION NOT BE ON THIS LIST??? I understand that some people might not have loved it as much as me, but it is a milestone in the indie Renaissance of the beginning of the decade! Wish I could of liked it more...quit about halfway through because for me the lack of engagement didn't justify the difficulty and frustration. Loved his previous effort, Braid, though.
Indie Games are really the backbone of the industry. Where big companies focus on franchises and the inevitable trappings, indie games can keep things fresh and fun

I almost agree with your opinion of Hollow Knight. The first few hours were confusing for me, and I nearly decided it wasn't for me. I stuck with it as every internet reviewer said it was amazing, and I'm so glad I did. For me it's my favourite indie game of all time.
@@shivers47 for me personally there was a lack of direction. It dropped me into a situation, with loads of options, but no goals. Once I got into it, I realized that was part of the story telling, but it lacked the immediacy of something like Gaucamelee, which I loved from the second it loaded. Again, that's all my opinion, and one I'm sure a lot of people disagree with.

Yes, hollow knight is one of the few games that is at its weakest the first 5-6 hours. Once it gets going it is perfection. I actually restarted it twice and now it is my favorite indie of the decade and top 10 overall game.
I've only just begun to dip my toe into this genre but I'd have to say Night in the Woods affected me the most. Art, gameplay, music, story (/characters!!!): All of it really resonated with me. Loved Edith Finch as well!
Some of my favorite indie games you didn’t include: CrossCode, Unavowed, The Blackwell Series( technically stared in 2000s, but finished in 2014), Hyper Light Drifter, Underrail, Bastion, Disco Elysium.

Why is nobody talking about the binding of Isaac afterbirth? Everything in this game is just right and every enemy you encounter have a special meaning behind. And the item system is just insanely good.

I have a switch with some AAA games, but I end up playing indies more than those games. Indie developers just have so much creativity and inspiration, I love it, every game feels like a different world.
I really like Limbo, but I think you should have used Inside instead. In my opinion it's an evolution from everything that Limbo did. In other words, if Limbo is charmander than Inside is Charmeleon. Also I would have liked to see one of these three: Superhot, Hotline Miami or Ape Out. Good list nonetheless, I disagree on the order but I agree that these are prety good games
LA-MULANA is number one! Over a decade of hard work to release a freeware game, first Japanese game to get greenlit on Steam, ran a successful kickstarter with all promises met. Also, it’s just barrels of fun.

Because Ori is for casual players. Even my noob friends could finish it. Hollow knight is oldskool like games should be. Hard and rewarding. Equiping different ruines to get you that win over a certain boss. And then get trown into hell into the dlc with a 45 min boss rush. Even i can't finish the dlc it but im really close. Give it another go no shame in looking up stuff ( i diddn't cause it would spoil the fun).
IIIAHMIII A Hyrule Master I talking about the world design here. It was way too maze like, maning me run around like an idiot, not being able to find my way around... I have no problems with hard games.
@@reeanimationgaming1034 It's a metrovania so you have to go back and forth. You can use mark pings on your map from he there is a door here or a black foggy wall i cant enter. They made it really easy cause you can equip a ruin to see yourself on the map. they did absolutly everything right.
That game deserves a LOT of love, maybe in a top of underrated gems, I love its soundtrack, its characters, the plot, the humor, the story, characters design, the gameplay, everything, except for the art style, that side is just simple or bad.

Same thing I wondered, but you could argue Limbo made much bigger waves than Inside did since it came out in 2010. While I think Inside is superior in almost every way, it has been much less influencial unfortunately.

Agreed. I have 200+ hours on it, and i just started a new playthrough, and it's still not boring.

it does have the best score of the decade though, Larkin precission with the Strings literally made me try more Harmonics and classic music.

I played Axiom Verge and it was interesting, but of the two titles, I have only played one of them for ~200 hours. As far as Hollow Knight's difficulty, I always find it hard but fair, an actual challenge, which can be rare these days. Just about every challenge that I encountered starts as very difficult, but looking back on any one challenge, they never were too unbearable. I would beat something and then think to myself, "It couldn't get any harder than that!", and usually it did, but never at an unfair rate. (Sorry for the TED talk about how great Hollow Knight is...) I can't wait for the sequel coming out soon™.

Celeste is awesome. I love celeste with every cell of my body. It’s some of the most fun platforming i’ve played ever. The visuals are so pretty that I can’t even believe someone actually made them (especially in the last chapter that they added.) Now with all that said. Hollow Knight is better and should be number one.

Oxenfree, Skullgirls, Bastion (all Supergiant Games really), Detention, Enter the Gungeon, Devil Daggers, Papers Please, Rogue Legacy, This War of Mine, Into the Woods, and Cuphead were titles I'd put on a best of the decade list and weren't mentioned here. I wasn't too fond of Her Story, Florence, The Witness, and Gorogoa. If I had to pick a title to sit on top it would either be Return of the Obra Dinn for its brilliant take on the detective genre or Hollow Knight for its flawless execution of the Metroidvania formula that bests every other title in the genre.

@@thenuggernaut9084 I mean it is obviously a pretty good game, but i dont think i am a very patient guy, i like to get straight into action (as you can see from the games in my list). I loved mantis lords' and hornet's boss fight, but in a game like cuphead i do not have to explore or wait to enter awesome boss fights. It is just not my type of game, it happened the same with titles such as dark solus or bloodborne (incredible boss fights hidden behind exploration, which i dont enjoy).

@RagingThunder It's over rated in my opinion (just for my tastes) I feel it repetitive and not so innovative since Rogue Legacy did everything it did years before it. The only difference is that you can choose your approach, but it isn't in top 10 for me, maybe at the 30th place.
Many will say that Hollow Knight and Celeste should be much higher up on the list (myself included), but you can’t deny that every game in the spot above it absolutely deserved to be there. This is a fantastic list, really well done.

There's quite a few from this list that I haven't played, so I can't say whether I agree or disagree with the entirety of your selection. That being said, I'd venture my favorite indie would be Hollow Knight. The gameplay was top notch, but what really got me with that one was the atmosphere. There was something in that rain-drenched, cute melancholy of HK that simply spoke to me in a way that few other games have ever done. The only one other game I would have included would be Stardew Valley. I spent so many hours with that game, planted so many fields and got in relationships with so many villagers that I have very 'real-feeling' memories from it. It's almost as if that town occupies a space in my mind that only real places do.
Either way, beautiful video. Here's to a new decade filled with happiness and great indies for all.

It dropped me into a situation, with loads of options, but no goals.
Once I got into it, I realized that was part of the story telling, but it lacked the immediacy of something like Gaucamelee, which I loved from the second it loaded.
Again, that's all my opinion, and one I'm sure a lot of people disagree with.

Yes, hollow knight is one of the few games that is at its weakest the first 5-6 hours. Once it gets going it is perfection. I actually restarted it twice and now it is my favorite indie of the decade and top 10 overall game.

I've only just begun to dip my toe into this genre but I'd have to say Night in the Woods affected me the most. Art, gameplay, music, story (/characters!!!): All of it really resonated with me. Loved Edith Finch as well!

Why is nobody talking about the binding of Isaac afterbirth? Everything in this game is just right and every enemy you encounter have a special meaning behind. And the item system is just insanely good.

I’m rather surprised only two or three people have even mentioned Outer Wilds. That game had such a powerful impact on me as a person and allows one to face the ideology of morality. It changed my life.
Hollow Knight is the winner for me but there are indeed a number of absolute gems listed here. Indie scene has practically saved gaming for me. Majority of all my most anticipated games these days are indie.
I have played a lot of indies, but Celeste litteraly makes me cry when I think of the first time I played it.
Same. I cried many times while playing it and the soundtrack can instantly bring me back to those moments and emotions. Easily the indie game that's had the most impact on me.

Stardew Valley, Cuphead, Baba is You, Subnautica would probably make it on the list. However I have not played them enough to fully judge them.

I have a switch with some AAA games, but I end up playing indies more than those games. Indie developers just have so much creativity and inspiration, I love it, every game feels like a different world.
I really like Limbo, but I think you should have used Inside instead. In my opinion it's an evolution from everything that Limbo did.
In other words, if Limbo is charmander than Inside is Charmeleon.
Also I would have liked to see one of these three: Superhot, Hotline Miami or Ape Out.
Good list nonetheless, I disagree on the order but I agree that these are prety good games
LA-MULANA is number one! Over a decade of hard work to release a freeware game, first Japanese game to get greenlit on Steam, ran a successful kickstarter with all promises met. Also, it’s just barrels of fun.

Really? I played for 4-5 hours I think.. Didn’t like it. Confusing world, just running around, then die, then run around, then run past enemies, then more running around..

Because Ori is for casual players. Even my noob friends could finish it. Hollow knight is oldskool like games should be. Hard and rewarding. Equiping different ruines to get you that win over a certain boss. And then get trown into hell into the dlc with a 45 min boss rush. Even i can't finish the dlc it but im really close. Give it another go no shame in looking up stuff ( i diddn't cause it would spoil the fun).
IIIAHMIII A Hyrule Master I talking about the world design here. It was way too maze like, maning me run around like an idiot, not being able to find my way around...
I have no problems with hard games.
@@reeanimationgaming1034 It's a metrovania so you have to go back and forth. You can use mark pings on your map from he there is a door here or a black foggy wall i cant enter. They made it really easy cause you can equip a ruin to see yourself on the map. they did absolutly everything right.
I would have put Lisa: The Painful somewhere in the list, thought it was amazing.
That game deserves a LOT of love, maybe in a top of underrated gems, I love its soundtrack, its characters, the plot, the humor, the story, characters design, the gameplay, everything, except for the art style, that side is just simple or bad.

Very surprised you included Limbo but not Inside. While I like Limbo I thought Playdead perfected that style in Inside
Same thing I wondered, but you could argue Limbo made much bigger waves than Inside did since it came out in 2010. While I think Inside is superior in almost every way, it has been much less influencial unfortunately.
@@DMC4EVERUCCI I agree, at the time no one had played anything like limbo, and i remember everyone calmoring to try it.
Shovel knight has to be my favorite retro-style indie game of all time.
