- This video documents the process of rebuilding the power steering pump on my 2003 Honda Accord 2.4L 4 cylinder. I highly recommend watching NutzAboutBoltz video that shows how to properly remove and install the pump ( • 2003-2007 Honda Accord... ). He has some very high quality videos for this model of Accord so if you are into DIY, I suggest subscribing to his channel. I also followed an excellent writeup by JohnNH, so it may be a handy extra resource which can be downloaded here www.driveaccord.net/forums/15-...

Worked perfect for my 2005 Rsx Type S. Great video and link in the description. I ordered all OEM gaskets and bearings.
this is the first video showing someone actually removing the bearing, nice work.
Update with these pumps: make sure orange/red bearing is seated all the way down, if not when assembling pump all back together and tighten back bolts, pump will be hard to rotate and will not operate fully functional and will appear seized. This had me stumped!
How far seated should it be. I think I am having this issue right now
Great video.
Some suggestions: Clean the pump first up while still on the car, it makes it easier, and you don't have to worry about water getting into exposed hose ends!..
Also, @2:50 you can see the problem trying to loosen the nut on the pulley. This is easier to loosen while it is still on the car and the engine pulley belt is still holding it down, put the car in gear, and then use a socket wrench and a hammer to tap on the nut, it should loosen easily, like ours did! :)
Fantastic suggestions! Wish I had thought of them when I did this... Thanks!!
I broke every bolt and nut loose that I could reach with the pump still on the car, and then gently re-tightened them before removing the pump. No need for a bench vise.
Good call!!
Thank you for your instructive video. Before I resealed the steering pump on my 2006 Honda CRV I watched many videos and the links you provided specially the the instruction on the PDF file were very helpful to me. The others videos would not inspired me the courage I needed to work in my pump when I haven't done it before. I had your video, the written instructions and the vehicles manual on my computer and would consulted them every move I made. Now I know it was not as difficult as I thought. Your video carried me through all the steps and it works fine. A sense of happiness and relief when I tested the car. Wherever you are, thanks for your time to share you knowledge.
Hey man I'm really glad it was helpful for you! I have tried a lot of things I wouldn't have had the confidence to normally because of UA-cam. Thanks for the comment!
Thanks dude, this is going to be the deepest I've gotten into doing my own mechanic work. Thanks, for the clear instructions, and for saving me some money!
Good luck! Thanks for commenting!
I just rebuilt the pump on my Element thanks to you. I had all the confidence knowing what to expect. I'd recommend using a small magnet to remove/reinstall the rotor pieces.
Great to hear!
This video is like therapy for mechanic geeks.
Thank you so much, my honda is an 09 but your video game me the confidence and knowledge to take the pump apart. It worked perfectly and saved me $120. Thanks again
Awesome! Good work!
Very detail video. I will be doing the same procedure for my old car this sunday- 05 acura TL with almost 340k miles. And hopefully it will stop the loud whining sound.
Thanks! It´s a great work! I repaired my power steering pump on my 2003 Honda CRV 2003 2.4L 4 cylinde. Good job! I followed your instructions.
Is it working fine ?
Hi Clint
I have Honda accord 2003 LX 2.4L. My car runs over 200000 miles and my power steering pump leak a lot. I follow your instruction. The only thing that I do not change is bearing wheel with the big seal in the center. Because I do not have much time to play with it. But next time I will do complete if my steering pump is leak again. My power steering pump is like new . Thanks again. Your instruction is so clear.
This vids amazing! Fully rebuilt a dc5s power steering pump as my cl9 one has an issue somewhere. Gonna rebuild that again using this video and resell it
Are these the same as dc5 power steering pump
NIce video man, Just ordered a seal kit for my 07 TSX
It's not my car make, but I do have to say its really good hands on, the strategy is really good, if this is your first time make sure that you take pictures of removal and you will have a full understanding on installment of your own parts. if this is as accurate step by step, then pictures help, if your a person that can't afford to mess up. I agree very good can't find this as detailed else where at least on my car model. So for those reasons Thank you!!
Melanie Romero Thanks for the comment!
Nice work, very detailed, I think I can do this now.
actually not detailed enough is this power steering pump reverse thread ? I think they're and if you didn't mention that many people would fucked up their threads not knowing that. Just adding that information to yes, a good video.
Congratulations for the video. Very good details. Excellent.
Thank you!
Good job bro, thanks so much,hi from Europe.
Very well done. I really appreciate how detailed this video was.
Thank you sir!!
Is this the same procedure for the 2004 Honda Element?
I have only ever done the Accord and more recently my 07 Odyssey and the process was the same. The pumps were a bit different, and the seal kits were different, but overall process was the same. Not sure about the element, but I'd be pretty confident that it's not much different.
Great video. Thanks you
After much thinking I've got a 60K miles used pump on eBay for $39 shipped, and it works fine. Later on may get a new bearing to replace it on the old pump when have time. Honda uses the same pump on many models but gives it a different part number
I just used your video to rebuild my ps pump. Thank you!!!
Nice work!!
did it fix it?
Well done good job.its very interesting information and experience. Thank you .
Awesome vid bro
Quick tip, remove the pulley while the pump is still on the car. Wedge a socket extention diagonaly through the holes and you will have no problem getting the pulley off.
Hi
Thanks for this nice Instructions. I do it for my honda crv 06 and thanks to you but after all the stering have some stiff, any idea why this habend
Thanks
thx for the info 40x17x12
Wonderful - you could be a very good teacher! God bless you bro...!
thanks your video really helped me
You're welcome! Thanks for commenting!
I used a zip tie to squeeze the vain blades so the pieces stayed together , that way they all stay in the same slot they were originally from.
A lot of work man! I would have just tried replacing only the easy seals on the right side of the pump and if that works to stop leaks or noise I’d be happy with that , but good video none the less
It was a bit of work but really not too bad. It was worth it in my opinion. Thanks for commenting!!
Show!!! Very good!
For anyone replacing the bearing Advance Auto Parts usually stocks the National 203FF bearing for like $6 that works perfect.
Thank you so much
I need to do this on my 2005 CR-V. I believe it's the exact same pump as this one here is for your car! I don't suspect the pump is bad since it's not making any noise and seems to work fine but it is leaking, so I'm probably going to buy a rebuild kit from Honda and rebuild my pump since new ones are about $800, which is ridiculous for a PS pump and Remanufactured units are always a gamble, so I think will be my best option.
I can't confirm if it's the same but I wouldn't be surprised! Just make sure whatever kit you buy says it's compatible with your model and you should be good.
Perfect. Good guy
Thanks mate!
I ordered a seal kit. Because the ps pump is leaking right next to where the suction hose connects to. Is it neccessary to replace the bearing?
Good vid. Thx.
i have a question please: do you think that just the internal o rings,on any pump, when they set/deform can make the pump deliver less pressure, and make for a hard steering? i have a weak pump (i tried with another one and it's all good) that i opened, the o rings all have a set,i wonder it it's worth replacing just them, all hard parts look ok
I was able to pull mine apart thanks to this!! Just wondering if all CL9 Honda Accord share the same pump?
Here is the replacement seal kit that I used: amzn.to/29q8vhY (affiliate)
Link to the replacement bearing: amzn.to/29F1C0N (affiliate)
Link to Honda brand power steering fluid. I bought six 12oz bottles of Honda fluid, so get two of these packs: amzn.to/29vAXRu (affiliate)
clintathusaz hi what is the part number of the pump you did ?
clintathusaz I replaced a power steering pump on my acura today. But I bought a remanufactured one and it started to leak from the same spot. So is there something that could mess up my seal or was it just a bad pump
steering is soft after?
This is very helpful for us, my honda accord 2006 was starting to leak after a month i replaced the red O ring. So im going to follow your instruction. Thank you so much
thanks for sharing dude, im going to rebuild my steering pump tommorow using your video as guide, my accord is 2006.
Great help thanks
Excellent video and narration. This info is good for Honda 2006 CR-V as others have said. I bought the factory seals for a whopping $71 but it's in keeping with no Chinese goddam junk goes in my car. The NTN bearing I sourced from Eureka bearing instead of the $30 dealer price tag.
Thank you Uncle Ronny for the comment!
Ok so this may be like just my own dumbassery or not paying attention but, make sure you put the outer collar, where the stripper seal goes, in the correct orientation. At some point I flipped it upside down and that blocks the pump from sending fluid out. Luckily I didn't destroy my pump with this mistake but yeah. Make sure that plus with just the spring under it is in fact in the hole on that collar.
Nice video. If it comes to replacing my CRV steering pump that has excessive bearing noise I will get a cheap $60 aftermarket one first and if not happy will rebuilt the original one this way then return the $60 one. That sucker is $1000 to do with the dealer including job, the new pump itself is around $700 - like it is made of silver. Thank you
Wow I had no idea they were so expensive!
Just got the 1000 estimate from a shop I trust...but had to decline. My goodness.
Is the 2010 crv ps pump similar? I think my pump is dying. Howls like crazy the harder you accelerate.
Is silicone paste required, or will dielectric grease or white lithium grease work too?
Good video...
Thanks!
A great way to get that rubber seal out is to stick a pick or a pocket knife or something sharp about halfway through the seal then you can just pull it out. You don’t ever have to get a tool next to any machined surfaces that way,
Great tip!
Can you please tell me how I can tell if the bearing seal is in correctly and in deep enough? thanks
To remove the pulley easily put an extender bar through one of the holes while it’s still on the motor, so that it’s held against it. Easily removable with a ratchet/breaker bar
Crack the nut while the belt is still tensioned saves any chance of damaging the pump or pulley.
Hi, I doing everything same but after set steering not working, please can you explain any bleeding ideas, steering wheel too many rotate, still no free
I watched a few Videos on PS pumps, some guys are rough, dirty and plain careless .. This is best video I've seen so far, as you point out the importance of keeping Hydraulics clean and making assembly in exactly the same order. I got a leaking pump and may replace the seals, was there a Part number for the seal kit as it may help me track one down.. Mine is a 2005 CRV but it looks like the same pump. Thanks.
Thanks William! Here is the link to the kit I used, amzn.to/29q8vhY but as you'll see from 2 of 3 reviews (3rd being mine) they had fitment issues with their CR-Vs. The PS pump part number is the description and you could cross check it to what the CR-V has on estore.honda.com. Best of luck!
@@clintathusaz Thanks for info and advise, that will help me track down spares, I'm actually in Manila where original parts are expensive and harder to find.. I'm going to pull the pump off and get the details and maybe see exactly where it's leaking from, be after Christmas now, my leak is not to serious yet so until then, Merry Xmas and a Happy New Year from the Philippines !
11:40 fast seal you just placed down has a coil around it... what's the deal with that?
What is the size of the o-ring of the place you opened with the number 10 hex ring at the beginning of the video?
Question what if the middle peices are scratched can I still rebuild it??
did use all 6 bottles of fluid, is 3 enough if you are not draining the lines? thanks
thanks
Is this the same power steering pump in a 2006 Acura MDX?
Nice video and step-by-step sequence. Was the rebuild successful?
Eric S thanks for the comment! Yes, the rebuild was successful and I haven't had any issues since.
When you put the two big block back, shouldn't you use HondaBond?
Thanks very much for the comprehensive video. Very well done.
I'm about to give this a go.
is there anything specific about the bearing i need to know? I got the size and 6203 as a part number.
You should be good to go with that bearing size!
@@clintathusaz please can you tell me how i can tell if the bearing sear is in correctly and in deep enough?
nice!! thanks'
Hey everybody, I figured out how to remove the ball bearing. you use 2 sockets and a hand clamp. The bearing can only be removed one way and when you press it back on it has a lip/ edge so you do not want to force in on past that point. Make a note of which side the red bubber dust seal is facing on the shaft, the other side is a metal dust shield, do not reverse that orientation. Notice I put pressure on the inner metal wall of the bearing when installing, do not put pressure to the outer metal wall or you can destroy the new bearing. Here are pictures of which sockets to use for 2001 Accord V6/ 2002 Odyssey etc: s3.photobucket.com/user/eksine/library/Honda%20Power%20Steering%20Pump%20Bearing%20Removal
My car is Honda Accord Sedan 2004 in Philippines. And i have a problem with my power steering pump. Do we need to get its serial number when we buy a new one? Its the only issue of my car and i dont know where to get it. Anyone can give me advice pls. Thank you.
Hi, I followed this instructions to rebuild a leaking on my 2007 crv. But after putting everything back and reinstalling it, pump dond work.😢. Can't figure out what i did wrong.
I believe that the orientation of the side plate is positioned incorrectly - shown at time 19:15. As result, the rebuild won't work.
WHATS THE NAME OF THE PART BEHIND THE POWER STEERING PUMP ON A 2006 HONDA ACCORD 2.4?
Followed the whole process and installed the pump, but now it is not engaging and steering is extremely hard to turn, what could it be? Thanks for the great video.
Some Pump if have too many scratches will never works again ..like mine too gone after changed seal. Why mechanic sometimes say " if it's works leave it"
Nice vid, I had my pump seals and gasket replaced on my Honda CRV power steering pump but every now and then the steering suddenly becomes stiff as if the pump fails. Any Idea?
We're all the internal seals replaced too? Was the bearing replaced? I wonder if it's seizing?
I have the same symptoms on my RSX Type S suddenly becomes stiff as if the pump fails. I'm going to change the seals and the bearing

thx too much
How's it holding up with aftermarket parts/seals ? Gonna be rebuilding mines on 06 accord 4 cylinder but honda rebuild OEM kit don't seem to have the oval shape seal where the back pump it fasten with the 4 bolts. Thanks in advance
The seal kit gave me no issues, but that car was rear ended and totaled almost two years ago so it wasn't tested for very long.
@@clintathusaz thank you, video well definitely help make it easier 👍 to you
Are aftermarket power steering pump ok to use? The oem honda one cost $400+ but aftermarket is half the price. Some people told me the aftermarket is no good after some time. What is your advice?
There's a wide range of aftermarket quality so you'd want to do your research and see a lot of good reviews. The aftermarket seals seemed to be of good quality, but seals are a lot easier to get right than the whole thing.
I realize that this is a very old video but I do have a question if you happen to see it. I took a black and white slipper seals out of the pump. My question is do they both go back in the same groove? I’m confused about how they fit in the same groove
The black one sits in the grove and the colored one kinda rests on top of it
@@popslops2188 Thanks. After rewatching the video numerous times it dawned on me.
The seal kit you put the link for seems like you possibly may need more o rings/seals. I’ve looked at several kits for the exact same steering pump and a lot of them seem to not have the exact things in them which is very strange.
The kit had everything I needed as far as I remember. I didn't have to source any extra orings or seals.
nice video, after i replace the seals, now it has no pressure ? why this happened ?
Same problem! What was the solution?
was wondering if this same process would work for 04-08 tsx? just checked and it seems as though the pumps are a little different looking but figured maybe the steps to rebuild are similar enough? if anyone has tried i woulds greatly appreciate the information
I have only ever done the Accord and more recently my 07 Odyssey and the process was the same. The pumps were a bit different, and the seal kits were different, but overall process was the same. Not sure about the TSX, but I'd be pretty confident that it's not much different.
@@clintathusaz thanks for the reply, i think ill give it a go soon. if i remember ill come back and let everyone know
Hey man, I know this is an old video but your advice would be very helpful. How was the quality of the Edelmann kit and the Nachi bearing? I want to rebuild my pump based on your video and I intend to use the same parts. Oem bearing from ntn is twice the price and other alternative for edelmann kit would be something from Gates, Honda does not offer a kit for rebuild, you need to buy them separately. So, would you recommend this setup Edelmann+Nachi bearing, I would be satisfied with a 50k miles milage from this repair. Thanks a lot
So unfortunately that car was rear ended and totaled within a year or so of doing the repair so it never got a chance to really test it. Everything seemed to be of good quality upon install though. Everything fit nicely. Best of luck!!
My Edelman kit don't have in/outlet O ring, also Ebay bearing is fr Taiwan.
It Fit on 08 Accord same engine 2.4 ??
Yes will fit up so long as your vin says cl9
Excellent video. very well done. I did not catch the bearing number. Anybody?
6203
Thank you Mike
Great Video. I followed the steps but doesn't seem to work. Steering is Stiff. I tried to flush the Fluid by removing the return hose from the reservoir and nothing comes out. Any idea what could be going on? The steering is VERY Stiff at any speed.
Thanh Nguyen-Perez Hi thanks! Did you prime the pump?
hmmm I may have missed that part. Thank you
Are you referring to turning the steering wheel right to left until bubbles are out? If so, I tried that and nothing happens. No bubbles in the fluid.
I just meant to make sure you have fluid in the pump before running it because it won't draw the fluid in if its full of air
Got it. So it took it all apart and redid everything. It works now. I must have put something backwards. Thank you
Did this last awhile compared to buying new?
Unfortunately I only had the car for another year and a half before it was totalled. But it worked great without any leaks for that long at least. I have no reason to believe that the rebuilt would last as long as a new one.
Amazon warns me that the seal kit does not work on my 2007 Honda Accord 2.4L. I see you had no trouble, so I wonder why I get that warning.
Sr mere ko honda civic ka power steering ka pump lena hai
Will this work same as 08 tsx
I can't say for sure but i just did it on my 07 odyssey and the process was very similar. I'd imagine it's close to the TSX
I have problem with orignal power steering pump now at 75K miles. The pump doesn't have any leak, whining noise when turn left to right or right to left. The problem of pump is harder to turn at parking slot when my friend same vehicle 2007 Honda CRV, his car turn very smoothly at parking slot and both car doesn't have any leak, and used with brand new Genuine Honda fluid from dealer. Please Help.
How are the fluid levels and colors? While the exterior seals may still be good and you might not have leaks, I could see maybe the seals on the rotating vanes maybe going bad and making the pump less efficient. I think it would probably be worth it to open it up and change the seals anyway to see what be bad or stuck on the inside.
But please, only take it apart if you feel confident/competent enough to do it.
@@clintathusaz Thanks for response power steering fluid is not foaming, doesn't have air bubble, and when car is warms up even I raise the more than 2000 rpm it still hard turning that seem the pump doesn't have enough power. But only when the car is cold it turn easier, lighter, smoother. My pump doesn't have any leak, but it seem doesn't have enough pressure and the fluid becomes thinner when it gets hot so maybe that is affecting the flow rate if the pump is worn out ??
That would make sense to me. I'm not a mechanic though so I'm not speaking from a ton of experience.
Thank you for the detailed instructions. On a side note..I can't believe that using only carb cleaner and brush helped to clean your PS pump so it shines in your pics :-). I've just tried that and it does not work for me. See my write-up at : www.driveaccord.net/forums/15-7th-generation/502410-power-steering-pump-2004-accord-4cyl.html. Any suggestions on cleaning ? Thanks!
i just build mine exactly like this and my steering wheel is stiff as a rock. dont know what else to do.
should of just bought remanufactured lol, could be your rack and pinion or some suspension components
Maybe the outer ring @ min 5:14 is not lineup correctly to the 19mm cap/spring, and holes on the housing. Same thing happened to me, just want to share.
@@vnlele485 thank you
Great video! But I still think $115-130 is a fair price for a new pump and not having to spend $20 on seal kit and hours of time.
I thought the same thing. I bought a remanufactured pump from amazon and installed it. It has a very slow leak and now i have caked up dirt and moisture on my alternator. I still have the original pump, I'm going to rebuild with new bearing and seals.
New pump for $115? A junk one from Autozone is more than that. eBay one from China? Good luck with it. It is $1100 job at Honda for a reason - the part is like $600+
In October, 2022, that pump now has a list price of $1,094.48, and online OEM dealers are selling it for $728. Worth every penny to rebuild.
I followed every steps but now my steering is stiff as rock.
I put oil in the pum before running. But still samething
I had the same problem, and have to open it up again, the only thing that's need to note is the outer ring position relatively to the housing, it must line up perfectly with the hole with the 19mm cap &spring that was removed @ min 5:14, I think this should be removed after the removal of the main backing plate that held by 4's 12mm bolt, so that you can mark it position relatively to the housing precisely @ min 9:07, for there's 3 more small holes on that ring need to line up with housing holes. After settling this correctly and installing the cap/spring, pump works for me, you s/b able to check pump operation by turning the pulley clock wise, should hear some sound. Thanks for Great video. 👍
@@vnlele485 thanks for saving my steering pump.. this comment should be highlighted
