The Old Bank Barn - Time to Fix it up

  • This is the old Bank barn that is on our property. This is one building we saved, knowing we wanted to fix it back up. The barn is built into the side of the hill, and has a lower level. The lower level and rear of the barn has old animal stalls inside. The upper level is where tractors can be parked, and has a Hay loft storage area.

    What a wonderful idea. I can see it in my mind's eye. Just realizing your pets are in animal paradise. Even the ducks, a new house, their own pond , who can ask for more. Continue sharing your videos.

      Yea, I would love to see it finished too. :) It sure won't be quick project. But I think the barn still has some life left in it. Hopefully it will be ready to use in the spring.

    This is going to be a great project to watch! You and your wife have certainly proven, over and over again, you know where you're going and what you're doing on your homestead and it's certainly your project and place. Having said that, I would suggest the first phase should be clean-up inside and out, all levels. Then closely examine the barn infrastructure to see if there are any immediate needs. Next would be bringing power to the barn. Once you start working in and around the barn for repairs and remodeling the stall areas you are going to want power for tools and lights. The barnyard fencing would come later and add the water line at the same time. Good luck and can't wait! BTW, I practically binge-watched your homestead and cabin build when I ran across your channel. Great work!

    The wood on the barn maybe you need to spray it with linseed oil then use an oil base paint to paint it....and gradually add pulling to the out side to attach the future metal siding.....

    I'd put one of those farrowing pens up on legs for a hay feeder.. i noticed on the clean-up video that they had bottoms . That would make a great hay rack

    Are you trying to move your chickens and rabbits in there by this winter? I wouldn't necessarily throw those old pens away, just move them out of the way for now; you never know when you may find some use for them, like a set of perches for the chickens. Goats would help with the clean-up, try to avoid the males they can get a bit aggressive.

    • @CountryViewAcres
      @CountryViewAcres  5 років тому +1

      I probably won't move the rabbits and chickens till next year. I just need to get it ready to house goats and get all the fencing installed.

    My choice would be oil of some kind to protect the timbers, rather than paint. It won't flake off, needs much less preparation, is easier to maintain and touch up, and would look great.

    Looking forward to another great undertaking. What happens to the ducks over the winter?

    • @CountryViewAcres
      @CountryViewAcres  5 років тому

      Right now they stay on the pond at night so predators can't get to them. When the pond freezes, we will probably move them into a fenced in area to protect them.

  • @anne-mariebrooks2256
    @anne-mariebrooks2256 6 років тому +1

    Looking forward to the barn reno. That barn yard you spoke of - is that where you will free-range your chicken, or will there be a separate area for them? Also, there is some junk up in there, but a lot of it just has to get organized, which you can commence as you move it out to get the barn fixed up. It's unreal that the farmer who owned the property before didn't dispose of those old horse feed bags. Might he have had a use for them? Reckon what that was, if so? LOL

    • @CountryViewAcres
      @CountryViewAcres  6 років тому +1

      The chickens will be able free range the barn yard and the pasture, once it is fenced in. So there is lots of fencing around the pasture to install as well. My wife almost bought some goats the other day, so I need to get this project moving.

      Yes, I think it will too. But it will still take a few mores to get it set up right. It is 3 years ago from today that we bought this property. It has changed a lot in 3 years, and lots more changes to come.

    Yesterday I had to clean out one of silos that last had corn in 2012, and let me tell you what was left it there was stuff that rats would not eat, after I was done and swept off the walls o filled two 55 gallon barrels full of crap to go to the dump.

    • @CountryViewAcres
      @CountryViewAcres  5 років тому +1

      Yea, when had the grain bins tore down, they left the crap from the bottom on the concrete. That stuff stunk for days. So I know what you are talking about. It's nasty stuff.

    Nice bank barn, still looks straight. Go around and check all the bottom post for rot and decay. This is usually the first problem area for a barns complete failure. repair or replace any problems. Also check for critters. I had a ground hog under my barn that comprised a main beam post. It was a pain in the ass to repair.

    Hi Evan
    If you have the Money or the ability It would be great if you could finish the Barn with all Metal Sides & Roof like the one they do on R&R Post Beam Builders out of northern IL. Then you would have a beautiful home & farm with Old & New. Check out Kyles work & see if you might be able to really fix it & make it beautiful.

    Where your gonna put your rabbits that is an old little feed bin they work great since there gravity fed. But if I were you I would leave it to keep feed in since you will not have to worry about mice getting the feed as there made from goon thick wood.
