- Time for a new build! Unfortunately I am still waiting on the beams to be cut for the main workshop build, so while we wait I can build it's little brother. The aim for this shed is to take the bulk storage of materials and some tool away from the main workshop. It will also give me some space for any metal work and blacksmithing.
TOOLS USED
String Line - amzn.to/2PluIDS
Bosch circular Saw - amzn.to/3gwr3z1
Bosch impact - amzn.to/3fqQNeY

Couple of pointers before any questions. Most of which I have been over on IG. This is not the main workshop build, just a storage shed. Only reason for this type of construction is that I hadn't planned on a finished floor so I could just build off posts this way. I'll cover budget and materials in a future video. 👍
Yay...a new for me with no spoilers as I don’t do FB OR instagram 😉🙋🏻♀️🇬🇧💕
Nice to see this up on the channel. Ive been following your progress on Instagram. Keep up all the hard work Tim.
Using the wood form at the surface also allows you to easily level multiple footing pads with each other. Level the forms and just fill them to the top and screed them and all your footings will be at the same level. The round cardboard "SonoTubes" can be leveled the same way. Footings in Canada are usually required by code to be 4 feet deep to reach below the frost level to prevent heaving of the footings.
Literally just been out preparing some ground to do the same pad system. But i’m going to support a 3x5.5 floor on it to build off.
I’m going to build a very similar shed in my back garden. Hoping to get it finished before winter but I’ve been told a shed isn’t one of my priorities at the moment ( new bathroom to finish!) but it’ll get done one day. Thanks for your insight into the build, I really enjoy your videos and there is always something I can take away and use for my own renovation project. Looking forward to the next episode already, cheers Tim,you are a star.
Try stuffing rebar in before you pour. Wack it with a Mall until in won't go down any further. Cut off the heads, pour concrete.
Also, please set metal mounts at the top before it dries. Attach the building to the metal mounts brackets.
Maybe not worth doing on something so small, but a good tip for the future: Paint old kitchen oil on the insides of your frames before pouring the concrete to help stop the concrete from binding to them. ;)
Any oil works good as a "release agent" including new or old engine oil. Makes form removal much easier and leaves a smooth finished edge surface.
Yep, I merely mentioned kitchen oil because I always seem to have some lying around. :)
Does the oil work well enough to pour footings in wood boxes? Then just dump the formed dry footings out? So I can re use the boxes?
I've been wanting this video for a while thanks so much from 🇺🇸
I just love a nice shed 👍👍👍
Seen these pads on Building Alaska. Excellent for surviving earthquakes!
If you are just using pads - another way of making the footings is to use short lengths of large diameter soil pipe as the concrete mold...
Yeah plenty of options, I’ve made up a large tube from plastic corrugated sheet before which worked well to. 👍
Thanks for your videos and tip done loads of work I like your work the way you do it I find it very clean and tidy.... Could you please tell me where I can get this work table please and once again thank for tips and tricks
Great idea ! The concrete pads will be perfect for my shed project . Thank you so much for the sharing my friend
Every video i watch i think.....where do you get the time from haha great work keep up the hard work
Great work Tim... love your channel.
Just came across this by chance, love the video and your way of describing what you’re doing. Want to build a large enough boat shed, open on one end, with this type of design. How did you decided on the post spacing from a structural point of view? Looking at a 10x4m size and thinking of 2400mm spacing if it will work
How did you level the six pads as your ground is higher than the pads ? Thanks
Post barn just put posts in as for a fence cut level job done
I need to do a pair of 50x50x80 concrete footings to replace some diagonal supports with columns - do you think those need rebar or just concrete?
Hi Tim, just an observation but I am betting your neighbors love you. Regards Jim.
Hi wanted to do some footings for a summer house in my garden but some of it’s clay what do you recommend
If I wanna buy is a footing for a 4 meter length brick fence and around 1 meter high can u use this method ?
1- build a timber rectangle box and dog depper so it has suport ?
2- or I can just dig around 600m deep and fill it up to the surface flat with Concret ? And maybe insert few metal bars to hold ?
Been waiting for this one since seeing the updates on Instagram. 😎👍🏼
Ur suppose to use gravel as a base b4 u pour and those holes aren’t that deep to begin with. Concrete doesn’t stick to dirt it’s the weight of the concrete that allows it to stay in place so deeper holes means more concrete and more concrete means more weight. I don’t know what ur temps r like over there but if ur hole is above the frost line ur concrete will crack after 2-3 freeze thaws. More Portland and less sand my friend.
Thanks for advise!
What can be the ideal ratio for this kind of foundation pad? 1 cement, 1 sand and 2 gravel is ok?
More cement will make them brittle. Too much cement will cause sufficient cracking when curing as it shrinks considerably more than any other materials within the mix.
Good one!
Looking forward to seeing this progress... when are the other episodes coming Tim???
Soon, once edited. Roof went on this week so if you want a preview it’s on fb and ig. 👍
@@TheRestorationCouple great, cheers!!! Great channel!!!
Good luck
Hi there,
Approximately how deep did you footings go into the ground? Many thanks!
Do you have any problems with your back after all this labouring on your property over the years?
Always wet your barrow up 👍
Welcome to Tim's hire shop 🙈
The square base should have fit within the diameter of the round pier to prevent frost from heaving it.
Hi m8 love the videos, any chance you put a link up too the concrete shoes for the posts please, appreciate it thanks👍
Toolstation.
İ need to lift one corner of the house then put some support underneath the footing. My question is, after lifting up the house, how am l supposed to fill the gap between footing and soil? Or it should be ok just the way it is? Can you guys gimme some ideas please thank you.
Haha I was thinking at the beginning that you should steal a bit of the chickens.
Hi Tim, what brand Carpenter's Square do you use?
How did you make sure that the footings were all level? Apologies if I missed it, but I didn’t see you do that on the video. Thanks
Some time back, I guess I used a 6ft level on a straight timber. Now I would use a laser though so worth getting a simple one for this sort of thing.
Should be a nice useful shed different build method you are using could be quicker and easier I think oh have you had a different mixer if so it looks good and sturdy
Great start, out of interest did you consider putting a Metpost into those cement footings (while the cement was wet) to then put your corner timbers into. I'm doing a shed and at this point where I either do footings as you have, or cement the shed corner timbers into the ground (not keen due to rot) or do what I have said above about the Metposts. Only negative it you need to be super accurate with putting the Metposts in at that stage to get the measurements/angles right
Yeah as I mentioned in the video, I had bolt down bases already and that gave me more accuracy with layout. Either will do the job fine though.
I want to make a greenhouse with similar footing. Did you need planning permission?
food for thought: That Polytunnel between 2 sheds and a high hedge is pretty pointless as no sun 🌞
More than enough light for starting off plants in spring but mainly used to house poultry over winter.
Dam - watch those fingers !
What was the concrete mix as I am planning to do something similar.
What did you end up using?, I was wondering the same thing?
@@nickhoy8727 sorry my plans changed and ended up doing something different
@@niteshmistry660 ah no prob, thanks anyway
If you don't mind me asking what is your day job do you have time to do big project
I’m a photographer. Most of my work time though is editing so it can be done in the evening.
I am thinking of building a garden office, with a timber joist insulated floor. Could I use this same method for the footings Tim, just add a few more in the middle for extra strength?
Don’t see why not. Just notch perimeter timbers in and hang off that.
Is this best way for building a base for a shed???
Not for a regular shed but good if you are needing earth or crushed stone as floor.
poor chickens :)
You tricked me Tim... I thought this was the beginning of the workshop build.
I wish!
Check out William Griffins UA-cam channel. He does garden building with an interesting base system.
That's too much work for me. Where's my checkbook?
I’m going to steal a metre of land from my chickens? I bet they had something to squark about that! 🤔
what is the brand of your plastic workbench?
It was from b and q, was given it as a birthday gift and thought it would be terrible but actually love it! 😀
@@TheRestorationCouple I've got a couple of these. I think one's a Stanley - it's yellow and black anyway. The other's the McAllister one from B&Q like Tim's. They're nice and sturdy and easy to put up and collapse. The plastic vice thingies that come with them are OK but not terribly strong so only reallly useful for gripping pieces while you work on them.
Keter makes them, and rebrands them for several companies. I have an old Black and Decker branded one. Ryobi also has their version.
poor🐓🐓🐓 got mugged 😂
You must be loaded or have bags of money stored somewhere
That would be nice. 😀
