- Before we can fix up the barn, we need to get it cleaned out. We also need to clear a path around the barn for Fencing. So we can create a barnyard around the barn. My wife is ready to get some goats or other livestock, so we need to get moving on this barn renovation.
Always listen to your wife😂. Buttercups are blooming now, ready for spring.
I love old barns, and any old structure. They are like old folk, lots of knowledge lost when they are gone! Blessings!
This was a good watch, hoping to help my parents clean out their umpteen old barns someday. Smart using the N95 masks. I've gotten histoplasmosis before when not using one.

I would pressure wash the old lumber and let it air dry as it can be re purposed for the walls and pens. Rip out the old flooring and clean that up first. Later, when the animals are in there you will just spread the nastyness to the clean pens and maybe disease. Painting of the walls would be a plus as they look to be concrete.

Awesome job, I wouldn't shorten your gates in the barn. It looks like they are made to swing out to block the aisle so it forces the animal to turn into its pen when you are chasing them in.
I don't want to tell you what to do but i would really tackle the side of the bard that is raised and full of animal waste. Cut it out with a chain saw get the tractor in there and scoop out waste. hose the whole place down with cleaner and bleach and your good to go in that area. Its a lot of work but it needs to be done.

Lots of progress! Love the old barn and it appears to have a lot of life left in it. I will say I tend to agree with some other comments about the huge job of getting that area under the farrowing deck floor cleaned out. Could it be toxic to the animals, especially chickens or young livestock if not cleaned out? Realize it's a huge job, but might save some heartache later.
Some of that lumber could be very useful with all the projects you have planned. Leave it out in the rain, it will clean up. Then just cut off the good stuff, burn the rest, though there is a lot of crappy wood. Get those supports up soon, how is the roof.
Nice sized barn. Does have a versatile base layout. You really made a dent starting out. You know you said may have to wait til next year to deal with those other stalls... Just cleaning them out now could be very beneficial (Oh I forgot, the date on your video ... Is already now October 2022)

Great progress!!! Its hard to tell if your wife is wearing gloves, but she does need to protect her hands from splinters and spiders!!! It took me years to get use to wearing them, but they sure save my hands!!! Cleaning and removing the floor under the farrowing crates looks like a winter job to me!!! LOL The wire panels will sure make easy to clean, install, sturdy stalls that will last for many years! I cant wait for the next video!!!!!

I recommend using cattle panels for the gates and partitions. Most goats cannot jump that high. (Pygmies are the exception). They have springs for legs.
The barn has come a long way in the last couple years.
Wish people weren't so quick to throw away old stuff - there is a market for old lumber etc.

You and your wife are real hard workers. My only suggestion would be using goggles or at least safety glasses. You mentioned the dangers of inhaling the animal manuer, but getting the dust in your eyes are also bad.

When I first moved to Oregon in 1989, I bought a little plot of land with a lovely horse barn that needed a LOT of cleanup like yours did. I was quite a bit younger and stronger then but I did it and I was so proud afterwards. It warmed my heart to see a young couple like yourselves working SO HARD but the results were simply incredible! Looks like a very good barn now! I wish you all the best in this endeavor. Such a fine accomplishment.

EC4400 you can have someone who is well versed in barn restoration, look at it and by looking at the beams and how it was put together, and what kind of hardware was used, can tell you approximately when it was built. You might also check the plat on the county real estate maps. They may have a record.

Retire the barn using MC cable installed properly. If not the rats will figure out there is feed in there for animals and they WILl EAT Romeo cable!

All the old compost/manure will be an awesome addition for the garden/veg plot. Don’t send it to the dump...

Why didn't you recycle the wood?
I guess the was easier to be rid of it. I have lots of newer lumber laying around left over from building my log cabin I can use for projects. Plus some of it had bug damage and was had rotten spots.
@@CountryViewAcres not telling you what to do but just my personal experience fixing up an old barn. The advantage to recycling old wood goes far beyond what one person said here, saving money. Actually new would could be cheaper if you figure the time removing the rotten parts of used. However used wood has many advantages, it is often of better quality wood, already dried, warped and cracked so whatever you use it for the faults don't show up later. It is rustic looking and i have seen quite often what looks rotten is quite solid a couple of millimeters in. I built some nice bookshelves with old barnwood, in addition from being strong ans straight it gave a very nice look.
In anycase allways nice to see people fixing up old buildings. Even with all the money in the world you can't build something old.
