  • How To Play FM By Steely Dan Guitar Lesson.
    This lesson covers all the sections of the song.
    It is the title theme to the 1978 film FM. It made the US Top Forty that year when released as a single, a success relative to the film it was from, which failed at the box office and has remained obscure since then.
    I selected this song in memory of Walter Becker who passed away on the 3rd September 2017. In the majority of Steely Dan songs the lead guitar was recorded by such notable figures like Larry Carlton, Denny Dias, and Skunk Baster. For this track the guitar parts we recorded and performed by Walter Becker.
    I have also included a backing track which is used in the playthrough at the end of the lesson.

    Thank you for giving attention to perhaps Walter Becker’s best (and not well known) studio guitar performances. I was surprised when I first learned he was playing this haunting solo. I always related it to Gilmore, especially his solo on “Another Brick In the Wall,” which was recorded later. I can’t play for shit but my ears are pretty good.

    Thanks for putting this out here. I knew I was in the right place when I saw a "vintage" guitarist playing a Music Man. I have a first gen Steve Morse Signature Model. 😁👍 I've loved this song since it came out. I saw FM the movie in the theater when I was a kid. I just went to look if it was available on anything I have, and can you believe it's not available? Period? WTFO. I'm about to go into an old man rant! Anyway, you've inspired me to pick up my guitar after years, I'm sorry to admit. I have arthritis and it's painful to just try to make a fist and bumping into things at the wrong angle can be excruciating. 😢 Last time I yried was pretty discouraging, but I want to see if I can't retain something, and noodling away over the jam part sounds fun and doable. Thanks again! 😁👍

      @@GuitarMates I really hope I didn't offend you with the vintage comment. I sometimes pretend I'm funny, and it was actually meant more as a compliment than anything negative. Someone once told me that anything 25 years old or more is an antique. I guess that makes me antique squared, plus almost a decade.😐 It's good to see some people out here on UA-cam producing content who aren't teenagers or just barely into their twenties. Speaking of which, are you familiar with Rick Beato? He 's a retired producer with some really interesting content. To me at least, you're obviously way above and beyond anything I'll ever achieve in musical knowledge and ability, as much as I'm able to judge from watching the one video (so far, I plan to look deeper), but Rick has blown my mind a number of times by finally causing several things I'd never understood to make sense. If you like t9 dissect songs to understand them better, which it seems you do and can do yourself, Rick does an amazing job of that, has a ton of videos, and to top it off, he'll play the part he's talking about on whatever instrument perfectly. And I think there's been one guitar lick out of a solo that he kind of declined to try, and I may even be remembering that wrong. Anyway, I hope it's not bad manners to sing another content producer 's praises on someone's UA-cam channel, I just thought you might find Rick 's stuff of interest and I'd tell you about him in case you aren't already aware of him.
      Oh, and I'm happy to say this time I had a much better experience than the last time I tried to play. Things started to come back a bit, and my hands weren't fighting me nearly as much this time, so thanks again for the inspiration. I😁👍

    Jeff, immensely enjoyable video; it's a kick to see/hear how you deconstruct a classic S-D track. To your invitation for input on other Steely Dan tunes to create a tutorial on, how about "Home At Last"? Have seen several on-line attempts; don't know that any one has got all the chords entirely right, nor the signature riff that undergirds the tune. Another song where Mr. Becker performed most if not all of the guitar parts.

    Geoff, Great job on a piece that so few musicians seem to want to take on. That original guitar solo by Walt (and it was Walt..was it?) was an epic and maybe a one off as he never really re-created it in the live performances. If a guitar could cry then that's what the original solo sounded like. And if only it went on a bit longer. Imagine if Dave Gilmour took it on, he of the weeping guitar style.
    I'm even trying to learn that solo now. So I'm enjoying this particular video of yours.
    FM just might be my favourite SD track... I mean you've got the fantastic base line, the strings, great piano chords and the most underarated epic guitar solo.
    It might have been their biggest hit had they released it as a single.
    Thanks again Dee.

    • @GuitarMates
      @GuitarMates  6 років тому

      Hi Dee, I am very happy that you enjoyed my lesson and thank you for the kind remarks. FM is an outstanding track by SD. Whenever I listen to the outro all i want to do is solo over the top of it. Its such an inspiring piece of music.
      You might be interested in my new Patreon site that i have launched this week. What I am doing is posting a backing track for members so they can record themselves playing over the track either in video or just audio format. They can ten upload and I will review and discuss ideas on how they can possibly improve or add to the solo. Other members of the group can also give helpful comments and advice. Of course there will be no trolling allowed only construct criticism is allowed. I feel that for a few cents a day its a great environment for people to experiment and learn without the feeling of embarrassment or insecurity that most people suffer when they first start to learn to improvise.

      Geoff, Thanks for that. Sorry about the delay to reply. It's easy to forget where I've been online leaving a comment here and there. Yes Patreon sounds like a good idea. Did I subscribe to you? Oh I just did now.
      Yes you certainly are an inspiration with all your talent. I guess some of us take longer to pick things up. And yet they say that Elton John was self taught on the piano.
      But I absolutely love FM and I must have everything by Steely Dan. I think I've had my all time favourite 'Gaucho' on every format. Am tempted to now get it once again on vinyl (something to play on my home made Console/Radiogram. There's a picture of it on my youtube page).
      Interestingly I bought a light Spanish acoustic guitar to practice on. My electric one is a bit heavier and then you've got to set up the amp. I wonder if you think it can be easier starting out with an acoustic instead of electric. Dee.

    • @GuitarMates
      @GuitarMates  6 років тому

      Dee John thanks for the reply and the kind words. Regarding guitars its easier to play the electric as it requires a lighter touch and much easier to learn bar chords. I suppose the deciding factor is what type of music do you enjoy playing.
      I am just finishing some backing tracks for my Patreon site. The site is live but I am just organizing some shot lesson fir the full launch. I am probably going to offer a free 30 minute Skype lesson for the first 5 people how sign up to the site at the $10 per month level.
