I’m in Australia. In 1985, I saw an ad in the paper for a band called “My Old School” which was playing at smallish venue. I showed up and every good guitar player in the city was there. When the band walked on, it was Skunk Baxter, Elliott Randall and some great session players. They started with Bodhisattva and played at least 2 hours of Steely Dan songs. What a night!

I really appreciate you breaking this down and going slow enough that us intermediate players can understand and not have to give up in frustration. Or the other option spending hours and hours just to figure out the first 5 bars. I truly thank you.

You know, over the years, I've seen several tabs of this that were clearly the right notes but now it was played. I'm at the point where your lesson has helped me with style a lot. The way the ascending riffs work taught me tons that I have used in other solos in other keys even. It makes it easy compared to the tabs I have seen. I look at the fretboard differently when I want to make long runs. My mentor has been telling me to slide more but I didn't really know how to do that until I saw u do it. This is a great video because it will help people at almost any level. It's nice to see someone who really knows what they are doing. Great job! Thanks.

As a beginner, this song is way above my pay grade, but your lesson and skills are incredible. I’m working on it from the top after all my other practice is done. I’m a huge Steely Dan fan and have seen them thrice in Japan and at The Classic West (when WB was sick and not in attendance). The opening riff of this song always sends chills up my spine. Thanks for your work! 😎👍🏼

I'm on day 4, and I haven't gotten past 7 minutes yet! I would have never figured this out on my own. Even when I play from tab, I hardly ever get it right because I don't play the notes with the right rhythm. Thanks for crafting and sharing this lesson!

Without a doubt, my absolutely, positively favorite guitar intro of all time, and the dude wasn't even in the band (session player Elliot Randall), which made it tough for Baxter and Dias when they played it live. A close second
is Joe Walsh's opening riff to the Eagles "Life in the Fast Lane."

I wish someone would get Elliott Randall and ask him how he played it, it's played in such an idiosyncratic way. I suspect this is extremely close, perhaps 100% so...but even to see where on the neck he did this stuff.
I always think as good as Steely Dan were, they were fucking BLESSED with the guitarists they managed to pull into the mix. Skunk and Dias were two of the best guitarists of the 1970s, and then you had these session players just pull off the most beautiful solos of all time. Larry Carlton, Jay Graydon and Elliot Randall as seen here pulled off some of the most amazing moments in rock.
This is incredible because session players sometimes take a somewhat 'staid' approach to taking solos as they are guns for hire. But I think the players of the time saw Steely Dan's work as amazing compositions and probably an honour to solo over....they had a beautiful canvas to work off.

Loved the lesson! May I make a suggestion, iit may be helpful to some to explain the theory behind how and why the solo works. The key center that the solo passes through and why the notes work against the chords.

Probably n00b question but how do you get your setup to sound virtually identical to the original artist? I don't mean the tuning of the guitar itself but rather the sound "signature". I would guess it involves the knobs on both the guitar and amp (a major knob job, let's call it) but I'm interested in the finer points.
