Maxine performed by Jon Herington

- Here's another one from the new book, (More!) Arrangements for Guitar, and one of the few that comes from the pop world instead of the jazz standard or classic American songbook worlds. Maxine, in its original recording on Donald Fagen's Nightfly album, not only managed to take the Four Freshmen and Beach Boys concepts to new heights of vocal harmony beauty, but also captured American post war innocence perfectly with its lyrics. Other songs on the record (like I.G.Y, New Frontier, and Walk Between the Raindrops) do this as well, but Maxine does it uniquely in that it gets personal (and it's a ballad, of course!). In spite of all it has going for it in the context of that fantastic album, Maxine is a gem of a composition in itself, even without the lyrics, and I couldn't resist including a solo arrangement in the book.
(My apologies for the less than perfect syncing of the audio and video on this clip. My lovely digital audio and video recording apps must have lost track of some ones and zeros somewhere along the way...)

Jon, you are the only musician who is an established musician and a scholar at what you're doing and yet you get on here and post your own videos. It is so humble the way you do it and we are grateful for your kind and generous nature.
Well said mr bartholomew. You are truly a deep thinker. Refreshing to see a comment from a good person
Jon's so damn good
Thank you for this damn fantastic work xxx
amazing Mr. Jon
The Nightfly is such a killer album... stands up today .. timeless
Took me a few listens but yeah
As much as I love all of the Steely Dan albums, I still think The Nightfly beats them all. I even love the album cover!! 😂
@@BillWillyBillyBill It brings me into another dimension. I can’t quite explain the artistic , lyrical and musical impact .. just profound.
To me, the Nightfly is the single best music document, 1980-present day. I can't escape it.
Sublime...
God this is good!
I was fortunate to see Jon with Steely Dan and Madeline Peyroux . I can't imagine the prep when Steely Dan does a different album for each show at The Beacon . WOW !!!
Mexico City, I'ts like another world...Nice this year they say.
Never thought that the superb keyboard chord voicings could so accurately be transferred to a guitar. Master craftsman at the top of his game. Beautiful!
What a virtuoso. Best single-instrument cover of any song ever.
I'm a huge Steely Dan fan and this rendition of Maxine is absolutely beautiful. Thank you Mr. Herington for this performance.
One of my favourite guitar players. Love Steely Dan.
Saw Jon in Dublin with Donald Fagen a few years ago and was so impressed by him and of course the whole band. I just got his book with Maxine a few weeks ago and it's brilliant. It's like having a conversation or a lesson about chord choices and voicings with a real expert. I recommend his transcription book (More!) to every guitarist who likes this video. The tunes he chooses are great. It also inspired me (as I think it would anyone) to come up with my own arrangement of Maxine which is certainly one of absolute favourite Donald Fagen compositions.
Superlative! For all his compositional brilliance, this one is Donald Fagen's harmonic Mt Olympus and beyond the reach of all but the most sophisticated ears. Thank you for making it all the more accessible!
Incredible!Chord voicings,tone!Beautiful
Love this so much! John Herington is one of the best guitar players that you never heard of. He had to be excellent to play guitar for a perfedction seeking Donald Fagen. As a guitar player, I can appreciate how talented one has to be to be able to play this song like Mr. Herington does!
A true gentlemen and a musical genius. Thanks Jon for your music contributions throughout the years. We are still listening and always will.
Love this song! Perfection Doc
This is so beautiful. The chordal arrangement and layering is astounding.
So beautiful. One of Donald's best songs. He outdid himself on this on. Superb..
Absolutely beautiful! I've played Maxine on piano for years. Your voicings are SO FULL, LUSH and, well... HIP!! Thanks Jon. Hope to see you in a Steely Dan show sometime soon. Peace.
This track destroyed me back in 82…. and your performance is simply stellar
Excelente maestro 👍🏿
The savantmanship both viscerally made all my follicles stand on end (including those in the pubis region) and illuminated the harmonic apex of Don’s work. God bless this
One of my favorites.
Wow! Donald and Walter chose wisely when they chose Jon to play and record with them. Although the other guitarist they used on their Alive in America tour back in the 90's were great musicians. Jon has the perfect mix of touch, feel, sensitivity, rock and jazz. This guy really can do it all and at a level way above most mortals. Beautiful.
Wow, when I hear it played like this I realize that this song makes a great jazz standard. It certainly wouldn't look out of place in the Real Book. You must play your arrangement for Mr Fagen, if you haven't already.
Hands be moving like a spider. It's so precise and fast
Beautiful! Have listened to this song forever...would never believed an arrangement like this, so close to the piano arrangement, was possible. Very nice!
Donald Fagen and Walter Becker let me hear your touch, but never imagined the incredible melow music guitar player you are. 🔝🎶🎸♥️🐝
I saw Steely Dan at the Orpheum in Boston a few weeks ago and this cat stole the show for me, what an amazing guitar player!!!
Out of sight! Beautiful!
Talk about life the meaning of it all...
Man, this was SPECIAL. To stay so true to both the song and the instrument, wow. If I had never heard the original, I'd still be impressed, but because I have, I'm blown away. Folks like yourself are upholding a standard; I'm grateful for that, and we're better for it.
So mellow and relaxing during the afternoon beer-thirty session. C'est bon.
Wonderful, and on a Melancon, no less.
Jon, your talent never ceases to amaze. I literally know *none* of those chords, and I've been playing for years. Love it.
Smooth as glass… great song, excellent performance!
Jon ur approach and musicianship are truly appreciated by recreational guitarists from all walks of life.thats what they all tell me.U r blessed indeeed.dr's lawyers and indian Chiefs.Thank u sir.f.z. lazarus man.
Just simply magnificent...just listened to the full vocal version when this popped up.. I've played it through 3 times... Just wonderful..
I used to listen to this album when I was in a mental hospital. A nurse left it there for the patients.
Gosh dang, I'm in love with that guitar.
Amazing that JH plays this style with a pick, and so well; almost everyone does chord-melody with the fingers.
Watching him use a pick gives me hope to one day play chordal melodies.
stunningly accurate. mesmerizing. Jon is also one of the nicest people and the most down to earth great talent in our time. The fellas and Danette's are finishing this tour and if Jon is around, go see him with his band. Absolutely amazing..
Wow! I'm inspired and picked up my guitar and started learning this arrangement but man, that's a lot to chew! I love it! Jon and I met in 1970, still in high school. I knew he was special when he first came over, picked up my left-handed bass upside-down and started playing one of the voices in a Bach cantata he was working on.
How in the name of holy god could anyone give this the thumbs down? Wonderful stuff.
Petty jealousy? Low self-steem? Random contrariness?
Chills, man. Just Beautiful.
So nice to hear this great song performed so well. I often post the original version of this song in discussion forums as a way of saying “try to hold” in general. You’d have to hear the lyrics of the original recording to understand, but I promise you that it is worth the trouble.
Wow, a beautiful walk through the park.
Incredible. Absolutely incredible. Arguably Fagen's greatest song. Thanks for posting this version!
This is some Ed Bickert-level sorcery...just gorgeous!!!
Not easy... Not easy.. thanks Jon.
Awesome playing ...........
Really wonderful.
Yes yes and yes! Thank you showing this ,sir!

MAGNIFICENT!!!! Never in my wildest dreams did I think anyone would tackle "Maxine" by the one and only Donald Fagan and yet, here you are JH, just absolutely NAILING IT!! Bravo! Brilliant. You have done the song justice.
Genial!!!!! Very profesional!!!

Maestro Jon, Your Joe Pass rendition of Maxine is off the charts outstanding! Gee whiz, you are an incredible talent and equally nice as a person. I met you at the West Palm Beach show a few years back. You continue to awe and inspire. Blessings! DA

Wow. Wow. Wow.... So beautifully played. Of course this is a great DF composition. But Jons' arrangement is great and lovely small all at the same time.... Johan Sebastian would be green of envy if he could hear this...
