Make sure you use the option for “alignment” before you start hitting shots each time especially if you move the unit around. It gives you 2 laser dots about a foot apart so you can see where it believes your target is. If you use it in the shade you can get it super accurate by supplementing the dots with a laser level (like one for indoor home improvement) because it will draw out a long perfect line so you can see EXACTLY where it thinks the target is (since it will draw a solid line on the ground and then up a wall or your net), a tight string on the ground also works well for outside. That piece of advice totally changes the usability of the Skytrak from 85% accurate to well over 95%. It’s accurate regardless, but what you perceive as the target and what the Skytrak perceives as the target are easily skewed since during use all you see is the single dot. I loved your video, and my Skytrak practice has brought me from a 22 handicap down to a 9 in a little under 8 months. It’s well worth the initial investment, if you can afford it.
Had one for a while and has saved me money and time traveling to driving range hitting random balls not knowing really how far they go. Just set up in shed with net and away we go.
hey Matt, drop an alignment stick right on the metal case lip in the front of the unit, it fits in there perfectly. It will help you know where center is
This sounds like an excellent tip. Glad I read it. I'm trying to square mine up in the garage the best way I can with the calibration utility thing, but my mat shifts around a little bit over time so it makes it a little tough.
Great stuff, Matt! We’re building a new house and I’m losing my 200 yard driving range out back, but I’m building a carriage garage onto the house dedicated for a golf simulator/man cave and I think you’ve sold me on this unit!!! I’ll make sure and give you the credit when I buy. Thanks for the very informative video!
I love my Skytrak for wedge practice. I think the driver distances are off and some of the shot shapes are a little exaggerated, but for the price it is definitely worth it. Dialing in your wedges is great and practicing your shot shaping is great. I use it 4 or 5 times a week and don’t have to leave my family to go to the driving range.
How bout trajectory spin rate..mba golfs mike b. Uses it on indoor lessons and i am just now seeing how this hi tech can help in distant control of short half wedge in between shots. Does your work on real grass...i love to tinker still after many years and this looks like a great way to really compare different methods...did it work in sun as much of my practice is out side on grass. Do you know if they can be leased..i am thinking of getting a few range rats to chip in,??? And wonder if 500 $ one would satisfy...do you think they would last Five years with heavy use.? Thought this vid was really interesting as i have come to enjoy an hour or even two hitting shags than playing five hour rounds in 95 degree heat and humidity.😎
I have one and it's the best golf purchase ever. Without this one, I would not get to the level I am at right now. And for the last two years, I have not gone to a driving range.
Skytrak is a great product. I work a busy job and have 2 young kids at home so being able to hit balls at my house for 30 min a few times per week is awesome. Since getting this 8 months ago I am playing the best golf I have ever played. There are downsides. It occasionally misses a swing and doesn't register a shot, but its very accurate. Plenty of videos comparing this head to head with trackman, flightscope and GC quad and it is very close and at 1/4th to 1/2 the price of those units. Living up north normally i cant golf 5+ months out of the year, but with this I can. I picked up a refurbished unit for 1,500. Not cheap, but worth it for me
@@PUBG_Clips4 Through Skytrak website. They used to run sales around masters week in April, Fathers Day, etc. Not currently given such the high demand since COVID
I got one of the SkyTrak at Christmas, I love this unit. We use it in the winter here in PA, I have found it does show more draw then I hit but I love the fact that I can play real balls and keep the swing working all winter. Great unit for $2,500.00 it is better than $25,000.00. I like to set the green on random and you have to hit different clubs to a changing yardage. Keep up the good work.
I love mine. I’ve had it for a little less than a year and it’s down wonders for my golf game. I can practice so much more and see ball flight. Looking forward to seeing more content on it.
I am lucky enough to have a driving range including the Top Tracer technology which provides all this plus more and much cheaper, $22 for 1 hour and a large bucket of balls, super accurate and fun, it has changed forever the way I practice.
For alignment, turn on alignment mode and then set a club or range stick down on the 2 red dots and it will help you see where its pointing. Also, make sure the bottom of the Skytrak is on the same level as the hitting surface.
I love my skytrak. I wish I had room to keep it set up 24/7. It's an awesome game improvement tool. Make sure to change the elevation to suit wherever you normally play.
Have had mine since it was first introduced. The only drawback is that I use it outdoors and sometimes the ball is not picked do to the bright sunshine. I am thinking of installing some type of shade over the unit. The additional practice program is the best part. It makes practicing more interesting and really dials in your swing and yardages.
I would probably trust this one more. I've used the trackman at my retailer and gotten such mixed results. I had to use balls with a hint of metal paint on them to get similar results as I do on the range or course (with their trackmans). On course I play a straight to slight fade with my driver, my miss being a slice. On trackman, it shows a slight to strong draw.
Money well spent. My experience with Skytrack at my local pro shop (Golf Gallery in Columbus Georgia) is spot on with what I've experienced shortly afterwards on the range. Great investment.
I literally have been researching and review all launch monitors that are somewhat affordable..... There are none cheaper than this one that can measure the tilt in the spin ("side spin"). Flightscope mevo - $500 Golf caddie sc300 - $500 Ernest Sports ES 16 - $5k Real flightscope - $ 7k GC quad - $10-15k Trackman - $20k I did read somewhere that Skytrak doesn't take into account if the spinrate decay algorithm where spin decreases over time. This could also be partially what you are seeing? So question, in your search have you found a launch monitor that measures the left and right spin at all and is less expensive than this?
With my Skytrak at the range I've noticed 3 things which also showed up in your test. 1. Dispersion (fade or draw) is a bit exaggerated on the Skytrak. 2. A "stinger" type shot, the Skytrak won't give you full credit on either "carry" or "total distance". Similar for any kind of low shot (mishit). 3. On high shots, especially high fades, the Skytrak gives too much credit and distance.
For an initial jump into indoor practice and indoor golf simulation play the SkyTrak is really good. I owned one for about 3-4 years. Just recently upgraded to a GC2, which is about twice as much used as a new SkyTrak and a little more new. Even have simulator golf tours which are really fun!
So glad someone making a SkyTrak review. I have mine for 6 months and I love it. Do not buy WGT, WiFi connection sucks. Spent more time waiting for connection than playing. Plug SkyTrak with USB works great. TGC 2019 is awesome. Worth $900. Just buy 2019, no need to buy original because 2019 is just awesome. I play a round of golf everyday, my game improved tremendously. Also, just buy a net and mount a $600 65inch 4K TV in front of your face. It’s awesome combo.
Love your enthusiasm . Love the review . I think the average person is looking for something that he can use to improve ball flight and know how far he really hits their clubs . All the other features are a bonus . Cool that you went to the range and proved this works . Thanks again . .
Thanks mr.shortgame,I think this would be great I use a sc 200 club caddie at about $250 and it really helps ,does not give the feed back this does but still a great tool.
Direct sunlight will cause the miss read. Also try marking a line on the ball with a sharpy and set it up pointing at the unit. You will see much more accurate readings.. get it in the shade too.
Hello Mr Shorty. I have the SC 100, it gets the basic job done. I also have that unit. I don't trust the numbers and side spin 100% but I love that thing. The first year I played a bunch of golf courses. The second year and beyond didn't really play hardly any golf. I mostly find myself using the range. It is awesome, even if you can't 100% trust it. It's pretty close tho.
Matt, get to the other side of the range and walk up to his shot and laser you son on the tee box from his ball. See if the roll out and estimated carry position is close. Maybe have a few hand held radios so your son can keep the ipad. That would be more accurate than trying to shoot the ball. I find these trackers all over cook the spin. I also find they undershoot distance as a result.
We play rounds of golf with both lefties and righties. Instead of turning the unit and moving it, the lefties play just fine with the unit in righty mode but between feet and ball. No problems for lefties at all.
Without Skytrak I wouldn't have a golf simulator - it's that simple. It's the only affordable but accurate launch monitor for a tiny space. I would highly recommend it.
The SkyTrak app does not yet (supposedly) include spin decay...so draws and slices get exaggerated some...and perhaps high ball speeds don't show as far as real life.
My Skytrak seems to over exaggerate a draw. I even used the alignment feature to ensure my target line was dead on. Other than that I'm happy with it. The challenges are really cool options. You can also set the range to random distances so you hit a different club from shot to shot.
i think you got more draw in the software then compared to your ball flight was because the SkyTrak software dont have spin decay :) i might be wrong but i dont think Skytrak have that in its software :) so you will get a bit more spin right/left in the software. Great video!
I spend about 16 dollars every time I go to range and 25$ to play. I did the math and 3k for a set up is about what I spend in a year and I can do this from the comfort of my home. And if I use it for 2-3 years, I will save money
You should have used alignment mode with an alignment stick. Skytrak thought of this in design, you just didn't include it in the video. In alignment mode, the skytrak shoots out a second laser dot showing you the exact center line that the unit is measuring off of.
Great video. I was wondering about how it performed compared to the actual shot, and you covered it perfectly. Thanks! I think I'm going to buy one too. Cheers!
Hey Mat, any chance of you reviewing the mevo plus anytime soon? I would love to hear your thoughts on it compared to the skytrak. Still can't decide which one is going to be best. Cheers mate.
Do you think the slight exaggeration of shot shape has something to do with wind? There sounds like a tiny bit of wind on the range, but none set on the virtual range. Might of effected how much draw the ball had versus what skytrak picked up? Thanks for your video! Was awesome to see this on the range!
I prefer to see my total spin and the spin angle...so I'm looking at the starting line angle relative to target line and the spin angle to explain my flight line relative to target line.
I really like my SkyTrak. I just wish the app was better and it could connect via Bluetooth. The whole network mode / direct mode thing is a giant pain when I’m switching between using the SkyTrak at the range and at home.
Great video. I appreciate your time and effort making this available to those of us still on the fence. I have question for you, as I'm fairly new to the game. Didn't you use the terms "fade" and "draw" in reverse order? I thought a draw would start out to the right and come back toward center and a fade would start out to the left and come back toward center. Have I got this wrong? Great video review, thanks again!
Love the wedge matrix and game improvement features. You can really dial in your wedges at the pins. Get some Pro v1 practice balls and watch them back up. Too bad they screwed up Nicklaus perfect golf subscription though
Nice Review, Thanks! I should get mine next week for my backyard patio... pleased to see you have positive results with it... The question now that you have had it for a while. Is the game improvement/course package upgrades worth it over time or do you find yourself not really using it as much?
hello mate i have some videos on it :) where i show it both indoors and outdoors. i also have uppcomming videos with WTG and E6 Connect and maybe TGC2019 (its kinda expensive so it will have to wait a while^^)
I think I remember subbing you back when I lived and worked in China, are you guys able to see when I subbed? Just remember you helped me to win a bunch of money from watching some of your videos, them Chinese Bosses and factory owners that liked to golf and bet money (lots of it) many of them shoot in the 100s, The best guy maybe shot around mid 80s. but anyways was just curious. I made 40,000 RMB just in one game. one day. I had to buy lunch that day after golf costed me 6500 RMB. damn I miss those days back in Zhongshan China.
I’ve had this for a year. When compared to the competition, it’s a great value. I have been doing my own clubfitting over time and this works very well for that as well as practice. In the winter or when it rains I play just about any course in the world that I want(extra few hundred per year). It’s made for indoors and is perfect with an impact screen and projector setup. Did mine on a budget and it’s awesome.
One gripe you will see from people online is that there is a few second delay from when you hit to when it shows up on screen....I was worried a out that at first but it’s actually been beneficial. I take those couple of seconds to get the feel of the shot and try to call the shot shape, ball speed spin, etc. it’s helped me get a feel for what certain shots should feel like.
I bought one of these during their Christmas sale last year and love it! I was searching for some good UA-cam content like this before i bought it and couldn't find anything this in depth. Fantastic video! I hope you do an entire series of videos like this on the Skytrak
@@VortexBrM i bought mine on the last day of the sale which was like Jan 15th. I believe the sale starts in early December. Possibly it could start around Thanksgiving but im not sure about that.
Matt, my OptiShot finally stopped working. Would you still recommend the SkyTrack at that price point? I used my OptiShot in my home office on range mode only, which is probably all I'm looking to do going forward.
Just watching it, the wind is blowing right to left and on the app you have it set to 0 wind, so perhaps that is why the skytrak is showing a bigger draw than what he is actually hitting
I have an R10, would you say it’s worth selling and getting a Skytrak with the recent price drop to $900? I struggle with a slice and could use the more accurate shot shape in my sim experience. Just not sure if it’s worth it in 2024 being a old unit
Thinking about getting one. Just dont want whole kit have mat and net all ready can it be hooked up to own computers. Just thinking cheapest route vs there whole package plan
I actually did do this but just didn't show it in the video. The distances were very similar with all clubs with only a couple yards difference between the two. Even with the driver both had similar numbers.
The Backyard Golfer the swing caddies are ok for swing speed reference, there’s a reason why trackman and gc2 cost what it costs, accurate spin requires optimal equipment, I took my SkyTrak to my pros studio and it was very inconsistent, some shots were the same as the trackman , more often than not .
You're hitting range balls which tend to be cut up and damaged. This will effect the ball flight, sometimes dramatically, which will not be factored by the unit.

Do you think the slight exaggeration of shot shape has something to do with wind? There sounds like a tiny bit of wind on the range, but none set on the virtual range. Might of effected how much draw the ball had versus what skytrak picked up?
Thanks for your video! Was awesome to see this on the range!
Are those range balls or playing balls? How does SkyTrak calculate different balls?
Really interested in one of these units. Can't wait for more videos about the skytrak. Keep up the good work.
Using at the range somewhat often would let you really know how much to trust the numbers and shot shape.
The delay on that thing drives me nuts. They haven't changed the hardware in years. Time for a new version with a better processor and no more delay.
Weird. I was used to the delay after about 10 shots. Funny how some things irk some people but is no big deal to others.
I prefer to see my total spin and the spin angle...so I'm looking at the starting line angle relative to target line and the spin angle to explain my flight line relative to target line.

Nice Review, Thanks! I should get mine next week for my backyard patio... pleased to see you have positive results with it... The question now that you have had it for a while. Is the game improvement/course package upgrades worth it over time or do you find yourself not really using it as much?
Ok. So did you give up on this? You said more indepth videos coming.... id love to see a review on the golf club 2019 simulator...
hello mate i have some videos on it :) where i show it both indoors and outdoors. i also have uppcomming videos with WTG and E6 Connect and maybe TGC2019 (its kinda expensive so it will have to wait a while^^)
Thank you! Just what I was looking for.
Awesome review! Keep them coming! If possible, please break down the different packages.
Great review! Would love to see more videos about the Skytrak
Will you ever do another review of the SkyTrak? Will you be doing a review of the Mevo Plus?
I think I remember subbing you back when I lived and worked in China, are you guys able to see when I subbed? Just remember you helped me to win a bunch of money from watching some of your videos, them Chinese Bosses and factory owners that liked to golf and bet money (lots of it) many of them shoot in the 100s, The best guy maybe shot around mid 80s. but anyways was just curious. I made 40,000 RMB just in one game. one day. I had to buy lunch that day after golf costed me 6500 RMB. damn I miss those days back in Zhongshan China.
I never bother with logo facing the unit. It works fine with any orientation.
You should make a video of your skytrak setup, for me it's out of my budget so I am looking at the Swing Caddie SC300
@@thebackyardgolfer7010 The SC units follow the ball, so you have to be at the range. Not for indoors.
@@feliperuiz5332 I was thinking more like using it outside with a net, only problem with the is not being able to see your ball flight
@@thebackyardgolfer7010 yeah, with a net the SC units won't be able to read ball flight
Please review the mevo plus. Deciding between those 2. Thanks
great timing, I'm in research...purchase phase. Great info.
I bought one of these during their Christmas sale last year and love it! I was searching for some good UA-cam content like this before i bought it and couldn't find anything this in depth. Fantastic video! I hope you do an entire series of videos like this on the Skytrak
Wes B when did they start their Christmas sale last year? I’m in the market for one but may wait if they start their sale in the next month or two .
Nice video will you be getting hand in with the new Rapsodo launch monitor?
Hey Matt. Have you ever tried to use the Fairway Pro with the SkyTrak ?
Just watching it, the wind is blowing right to left and on the app you have it set to 0 wind, so perhaps that is why the skytrak is showing a bigger draw than what he is actually hitting
I have an R10, would you say it’s worth selling and getting a Skytrak with the recent price drop to $900? I struggle with a slice and could use the more accurate shot shape in my sim experience. Just not sure if it’s worth it in 2024 being a old unit
Another great video. Thanks.
Read somewhere that the case interferes with the readings? Anyone can comment on that?
What’s your opinion on purchasing a certified refurbished skytrak verses a new one from skytrak directly?
Can you tell SkyTrak what wind conditions/temp/humidity you're in? Or is that information not calculated at all for the shots?
Does applying the small circle stickers on the golf ball allow for more accurate feedback?
I think your son should move from hitting draws to playing his fade shot. It is much more controllable for him
Best video review ever. Thank you!
How long does it take to move sky track while play other people? Right and left headed players
Thinking about getting one. Just dont want whole kit have mat and net all ready can it be hooked up to own computers. Just thinking cheapest route vs there whole package plan
I wonder if the range balls react different than a real ball? Pretty sure it would
cool video man! I just subbed and liked your video. Can't wait till you play some of the courses
He has a great looking swing!
What happened to watching your ball flight and divot?
If you were going to use this primarily outdoors do you think it would be a good investment or would the Mevo + be a better pick? Thanks.
Mevo is better for outside. I have Skytrak and only use it indoors. Amazing for a small space.
Can you compare this and your sc3000 on the range and the net please.
Yes can you compare it to the Swing Caddie SC300? and do you think the sc3000 is worth it compared to this Skytrak?
That’s like comparing a go cart with a car. SkyTrak is not that accurate but far more accurate then the swing caddie.
@@TopblokeGolf You're right, but I kind of like the latest swing caddie, at this point I should be looking at purchasing an old unit...
Nice! Love my Skytrak. I went from a 12 to a 5 handicap after 4 months of owning it! I made a video review as well.
Thanks for this video and all the info!
Your son has a great swing.
You're hitting range balls which tend to be cut up and damaged. This will effect the ball flight, sometimes dramatically, which will not be factored by the unit.
Who cares? It’s the initial reading and then a forecast on a normal ball
