This was how I discovered Leonard Cohen, love at first listen. Last year, I made a point of staying at the King Eddie so I could swan around in that lobby and dance down its grand staircase singing Memories. A dream come true...
I never had a "honeymoon" not my thing- I think Leonard could dig- but I've always wanted to stay at The King Edward since he did- tomorrow is Sept. 21- his birthday- I STILL haven't come to terms with his passing- I might be older than you- and I'm one of "those" fans- the ones who earned him annoying nick names from unenlightened reporters, "music to commit suicide too"- I've ADORED him since I was like 12- ish- much to chagrin, pain because I'm homely- he'd never have given me a first glance- I knew of him as a poet and novelist- but I remember going, after school to a very hip record store, a small, uncommercial! store run by an English expat- in those days a British accent got you, ahem, how to put it delicately- as Leonard said, "there are no dirty words" but You Tube censors- first base, got you to first base and a home run was assured if you played this album- college boys...I was in high school, about to drop out actually and broke- too messed up to "flip burgers" and not pretty, so the only Coffeehouse in the very small Canadian city I spent half my teenage years in, wouldn't hire me- I used to go to Bluebird Records every Friday like a ritual! And I swear I could walk with my eyes closed to the bin where he waited...I'd stand there, the words of Shakespeare in my head: I gave thee mine before thou didst request it...Juliet to Romeo- the store's owner, an " old" guy, in his 30's like Leonard used to chuckle, and tease me and emphasize what an amazing album it was...I know that I'd mumble in quiet reverence! I still feel like that young girl- I still break out! Janis Joplin wasn't homely- but she didn't look like Jean Shrimpton, reigning monarch of modes nor B. Bardot nor Michelle Philips- poor Janis- I was also "in love" with Marianne Faithfull- still am- now SHE'S A STUNNER- like her I am in perpetual rehab- yep- unlike Leonard who doesn't seem to have had an addictive personality- maybe bipolar illness- seems so- my "dis-ease" is harder to treat- it's a life sentence and doesn't respond well to drugs- do you know his song, Nancy? If you're a true Cohen-head you do- well I'm kinda like her- when I went to see him a few years before he passed I wore black velvet vintage AND GREEN STOCKINGS and I know he saw me- smallish venue- I've always wanted a tattoo of the logo on the cover of The Future- my other guy! His name is Gary so all you need to do is add a bar on one of the cuffs- forms a "G" - I had it priced, bird too ( for Marianne Faithfull) and the tattoo artist quoted 500.00 at least! Nope, mortgage payment! Thanks for "listening"- my partner doesn't dig Leonard ( jealous!!!) so I can't babble on about him, a safe addiction- Dr H Guy, Leonard's psychiatrist buddy doesn't always respond- unlike Robert Cory? His manager- he's a real peach- Namaste from a Nightowl at Tom Waits' Diner. Cold Coffee but Hot Music
That!s my aunt Celia at 18:37 playing “The Diva”. Aunt Celia founded the National Ballet of Canada and was its principal director/choreographer for 24 years. I have wonderful memories of performances of the ballet in Windsor and in Toronto when we visited her and husband Jay in winter of 1967.
Does anybody know why, the OFFICIAL MUSIC PROMOTIONAL VIDEO, FOR, THE ALBUM, THE FUTURE, the video filmed at L's favorite bar in Toronto- ISN'T ON UA-cam anymore?!! It's fantastic- LOVE YOU LEONARD, ALWAYS...
