The painful honesty of this song is from beyond the ego defense line. The question it askes is not about "right or wrong" but rather: "can I feel anything after all". Truly profound. Leonard was far more than a brilliant artist.
The most brilliant lyricist and poet of our generation. He never sold out and he never told us how we should feel. We felt it. We’ll always feel it. Long lives the spirit of Cohen.

I cherish it alone again, and again, and again, everytime, unlocking a new meaning of the same lines.
That is the most wonderful insight into the power of real music. I agree totally. This is like a private prayer. Its beauty is its ability to move emotion from the dark to the light.
I remember being amazed in the 60's that so many local singers and musicians thought he was weird or didn't know about him at all, when I was learning Suzanne, Sisters of Mercy, Dress Rehearsal Rag and Priests. There was such a deep sorrow in his music, yearning for the same simplicity others enjoyed in their lives but seeing, thinking, feeling too much. 💗 No-one is fully dead until forgotten about. Mr Leonard Cohen will live for a long, long time ahead. I have said that before, and will keep repeating.
This is the end of the song Leonard wasn’t telling you: It falls in love, it bleeds and breaks Until it breaks apart. It turns lonely, cold and dark That’s - what happens to the heart. Thank you Leonard !
But Magic would not tarry It moves from arm to arm It would not stay with them Magic is afoot It cannot come to harm It rests in an empty palm It spawns in an empty mind But Magic is no instrument Magic is the end -Leonard Cohen & Buffy Sainte Marie
Hello all..I’m 73 summers old now and not quite ready to part just yet, but L’s memorable and so relevant past words of being so lightly here and hoping the ending not being too uncomfortable, these parting words from this incredibly eloquent writer of verse and song has somehow conspired within me to accept that my departure may not be that far away...and he has helped allay any fears I may have previously had.But without an urgent change of heart and behaviour from all we humans..life on this planet for most living things may be grossly curtailed as a result of not caring enough for each other and the natural beauty of this world we all share! Thank you Mr Cohen for all your words of wisdom and safe journey to wherever you hoped to go and the writers guild that surely must await you there.. Bon Voyage! X
He was a genius A lyrical genius and that voice I'd love that baritone voice rest in peace Leonard Cohen We know what happened to your heart It's in heaven with God❤
I regret not having the chance to ever see him singing live, I regret being to young when he was still touring. He is one of the few reasons I would go back in time.
Anca Petrache I was supposed to see him in 2008 and my girlfriend at the time didn’t want me going. I decided not to go. Big. Mistake. I’ll never let someone keep me from doing what I want again. Also, hello Anca.
I regret not having listened to him before I had. My mum was a big fan, and I never listened to him before she died. He played in Belfast in 2019, i remember my mum looking up tickets and they were pretty expensive. I was just out of school. I'd give anything now to go back and buy us tickets. We did go to see NIN a couple of times, good memories.
This video perfectly describes how our lives should be lived: in peace, contemplating nature. Pushing away many of our crappy, useless, inner battles that drain our positive energies. Then, the fear will disappear and we'll turn into humans, once again. Leonard is a Master life.

@@keatsgipsy9991 Leonard wrote this song. But he didn't choose to publish it nor end his life in the "handy" way. The suicidal thought attacked Leonard thousands of times, but was never able to kill him. He always picked himself up when he fell. And he is now free. I am not sure if he still needs to remember this song from the other side. But it is certain that he doesn't need to bow down before people like Hemingway, if they meet.
Voz misteriosa, que habla y susurra sus canciones, impregna los corazones y nunca morirá. Leonard Cohen era muy especial, atemporal, único e inimitable. Gracias a su hijo podemos disfrutar de esta joya y de un videoclip maravilloso
I'm glad he got to achieve transcendence in the end. We all must take that long solitary walk through the forest, the darkest night of our lives, and make it out alive, before we can truly rise to our calling. Beautiful video, music, lyrics. Such a gifted light we lost.
My brother used to call me "Suzie" (which was a shortened form of Suzanne). Cohen helped us grow up. From that sweet little Suzanne to this girl who's trying to stand strong after losing everything, I grew up. We all grew up. With his voice, with his words.

@@weirdguy4948, oohh..., 😄, well, if the word "was" was used, my unleached and crazy humorous side had never had anything to respond to. A question of 'what' or 'where' he is /was😬🙃😆. I didn't write it, I only noticed. You can stop read here if you like, but then don't bother criticize me. (I have seen an interview (Television many years ago) with Mr Cohen, at that time showing a great, low, subtle humor, so I believe that he wouldn't be offended of my dark humor. If I had thought he would, I never had replied. So, before everyone here want me to the hanging tree; Mr Cohen was a person with an exeptional capability to be near to and express his emotions in words. some people, such as Mr Cohen wrote about love, pain, loneliness, religion and the hard part of being a human. If he hadn't have an opposite side to balance with he had gone nuts, so of course he could laugh, even at weird things. Why did I write all this now? Because when reading comments on Leonard Cohen videos it very often seems like a great part of his fan base are rather sensitive people who take things very serious. My experience is that kind of sensitivity block people's ability to comprehend dark and absurd humor. Thank God not always! We need to explore our inner, emotional sides, where Mr Cohen's lyrics can help us to find words on what we experience, but equally much we need to losen up and laugh. Laugh at life itself, everything crazy it brings before us, all little silly things we do as humans. Laughter is the unbeatable way of dealing with sad and sorrowful matters. Not laugh and shrug ones shoulders and walk away, laugh at every little silly detail that always occurs. I took care of first my dying stepfather and sick mother, and after he was gone my mother for two years. All those weird, strange, silly, chaotic situation that those days brought... I survived through humor. 🙃😄😄😄 And you know what, that humor made their last time on Earth much more fun!)
I think this is Leonard Cohen saying ‘I’m cracked, I’m not perfect, I’ve messed up, I’m just a human being, struggling’ - and in truth that’s what most of us are… But that doesn’t deny the beauty of his work, and of life. An incredibly poignant and touching piece… We each continue our search for the elusive something of life…
işte bu mükemmel. 00:36 "it failed my little fire but it spread a dying spark" Marx'ın diyalektiği gibi... her başarısızlık bir başka başarının kaynağı olabiliyor. Türkçe'de "gönül" denir. Google "heart" diye çevirir ama karşılamaz. Gönlünüzü kaybetmeyin sakın Leonard Cohen'in söylediği gibi.
I will never be without Leonard Cohen. He bonded me with my father. He bonded me with life. This man has sung the words that tell my story and I will miss him. Always.
A knowing, always known, but only realised from the heart. A letting go into the infinite now, merging with what I am. The fullness and complete beauty without judgement. My overwhelming enjoyment in dancing my part in oneness. The profundity of being able to interact with mySelf in this dimension. The light dance. I endeavour to be childlike in wonder of what I am. I am the ruler, visiting the heart. Respect
I have never heard anyone sing as well as Leonard Cohen about living between Heaven and Hell, he sings of the Human Condition. We all have touched both Heaven and Hell and it is the heart that truly suffers trying to find that middle place.
the dichotomy of the song is incredible “the angel plays a fiddle the devil plays a harp, every soul is a minnow, every mind is like a shark - i care so very little what happens to the heart” - the intentional irony
That line is so striking and poignant, it takes me aback and gives me chills every time. I'm not sure what others or Leonard meant by it, to me it suggests a sort of mercenary aspect to making it as an artist, leaving behind friends and peers, as well as feeling trapped by that fame and celebrity, which seems to fit Leonard's retreat to Hydra. Or maybe the prison of the gifted is in the person so gifted or cursed with such intelligence and sensitivity as to be lonely and alienating and painful, even in obscurity, and being friendly with the guards means being able to play nice, be charming, and sort of fake being like other people to get along in life, and feeling like you're betraying your true self (the other prisoners?) in your social and professional life and its personae. It's a startlingly unflattering and sinister image. But it also harkens back to recurrent references to the Shoah/Holocaust on this pair of albums (especially prominently from "You want it Darker"'s refrain: "a million candles burning" and verse "They're lining up the prisoners and the guards are taking aim/I struggled with some demons/they were middle class and tame/I didn't know I had permission to murder and to maim" and evoked within this own song's stark last couplet (a contrasting image of the poet and his father as partisan/Jewish rebels", ready to shoot those same guards. But of course one of the major features of great art or literature is that it inspires different interpretations and I would like to see what other people think too.
@@fractiousperson303 Thank you so much Ian for writing this detailed explanation. It seems like you have gotten the exact interpretation as I thought. I would stress more on 1st and 2nd explanation that you brought up. Yes, gifted people are hell lot different and 'cursed' with so much of intelligence and sensitivity as to be more and more alienated from society. They are immersed in their own world of thoughts and ideas to outwardly appear as strange and unusual. Normal people think positivity means you ignore and shy away from pains and agony of being alone. Truth is, brains in those gifted individuals work in a completely different frequency and doesn't match with the common people. So they feel alone even when surrounded by crowd. That's what Leonard Cohen meant I guess when he said 'In the prison of gifted'. But still you live in a society and want to be accepted , so you behave in an acceptable way to match the normal people's frequency. That's where the phrase comes " I was friendly with the guards".
I just finished reading his biography (Sylvie Simmons) and I highly recommend to anyone who loves his music. It's a long read but really good! Lots of people cooperated with it, including Leonard himself.

@Relentless Defeatist - Someone hasn't listened to much Cohen, then. Very few of his songs are "stereotypical horny old dude stuff".
This song is a masterpiece. I've got chills listening to it.
I gotta admit that I'm 30 and I cried at this in the middle of the day ... I feel lucky to listen to this so early R.I.P Cohen. Adamsın.

No-one is fully dead until forgotten about. Mr Leonard Cohen will live for a long, long time ahead.
I have said that before, and will keep repeating.

This is the end of the song Leonard wasn’t telling you:
It falls in love, it bleeds and breaks
Until it breaks apart.
It turns lonely, cold and dark
That’s - what happens to the heart.
Thank you Leonard !
Beautiful.
The heart heals all wounds.
But Magic would not tarry
It moves from arm to arm
It would not stay with them
Magic is afoot
It cannot come to harm
It rests in an empty palm
It spawns in an empty mind
But Magic is no instrument
Magic is the end

Anca Petrache
I was supposed to see him in 2008 and my girlfriend at the time didn’t want me going. I decided not to go.
Big. Mistake.
I’ll never let someone keep me from doing what I want again.
Also, hello Anca.
I had 1 chance to see him but it was a state away an my car would not make the trip ,,sadly
regret being young? i mean we can only regret our mistakes.. age is not a mistake..
Și eu.
Here is he, speaking to us sweetly from a window in the tower of song with his poetry, songs and novels.
He was and will remain a genius. Singer, composer, poet, philosopher, but above all, a man with a great soul.
This video perfectly describes how our lives should be lived: in peace, contemplating nature. Pushing away many of our crappy, useless, inner battles that drain our positive energies. Then, the fear will disappear and we'll turn into humans, once again. Leonard is a Master life.

Leonard wrote this song. But he didn't choose to publish it nor end his life in the "handy" way. The suicidal thought attacked Leonard thousands of times, but was never able to kill him. He always picked himself up when he fell. And he is now free. I am not sure if he still needs to remember this song from the other side. But it is certain that he doesn't need to bow down before people like Hemingway, if they meet.

was this verse written by him in that poem? because i looked it up and can't find it
Voz misteriosa, que habla y susurra sus canciones, impregna los corazones y nunca morirá. Leonard Cohen era muy especial, atemporal, único e inimitable.
Gracias a su hijo podemos disfrutar de esta joya y de un videoclip maravilloso
"go tell the young messiah..." Oh Cohen... Only he wrote like this... Every line breathes Cohen.
I'm glad he got to achieve transcendence in the end. We all must take that long solitary walk through the forest, the darkest night of our lives, and make it out alive, before we can truly rise to our calling. Beautiful video, music, lyrics. Such a gifted light we lost.
Wonderfully said.
My brother used to call me "Suzie" (which was a shortened form of Suzanne). Cohen helped us grow up. From that sweet little Suzanne to this girl who's trying to stand strong after losing everything, I grew up. We all grew up. With his voice, with his words.
I pressed the like button even before listening to the song.

I think this is Leonard Cohen saying ‘I’m cracked, I’m not perfect, I’ve messed up, I’m just a human being, struggling’ - and in truth that’s what most of us are…
But that doesn’t deny the beauty of his work, and of life. An incredibly poignant and touching piece… We each continue our search for the elusive something of life…
işte bu mükemmel.

Marx'ın diyalektiği gibi... her başarısızlık bir başka başarının kaynağı olabiliyor. Türkçe'de "gönül" denir. Google "heart" diye çevirir ama karşılamaz. Gönlünüzü kaybetmeyin sakın Leonard Cohen'in söylediği gibi.

No artist or poet will get near this great man
A knowing, always known, but only realised from the heart.
I really think Leonard Cohen was one of the best poets/singer songwriters of all time
A very weak poet (off of the page) but a good songwriter apart from his obsession with metaphor.
@@thomascarlyle6117 I really like his poem "I Have Not Lingered in European Monasteries"
the dichotomy of the song is incredible “the angel plays a fiddle the devil plays a harp, every soul is a minnow, every mind is like a shark - i care so very little what happens to the heart” - the intentional irony
I'm crying like a little child..this poet touched me so deep and brought everything hidden-emotion and memory -to light...i felt my tender soul naked
Love your heart x
He is the modern day shaman, able to move me to a different reality by his voice and poetry.
Those two lines " In the prison of the gifted, I was friendly with the guards" .....
I am curious, what do you think it meant?
