I just did the math (I'm bored, LOL) and THIS much Chinese food, at least in my neck of the woods, would be about $211.90!! That's a difference of $171! I can't believe food was ever this cheap!!!
Dom is so lovable when he tries not to cry, and how he portrays his food tormented character, so true to life. Many of us go through such hardships in our lives, this movie really relates, both tragically and humorously. I love all of the movies and characters he has ever played. Miss you much Dom, miss you.
@@ribbs13 Maybe they really did that in that area of Manhattan, Little Italy bordering on Chinatown because many patrons were local and were not travelling too far? Still doesn't make sense and I lived in NYC for years and never had a take out order given to me with containers open and food falling out. You're right about details...4 orders of spareribs, 4 orders of lobster with black bean sauce...those two items alone would've brought the bill way over $40. I realize this was over 40 years ago, but if I could've bought all that food for 40 bucks, I would've eaten Chinese food a lot more often than I did.
Great movie!! Just watched it again the other night on TV. I think the true sign of a real movie is one that can make you laugh AND cry. So many scenes with so much emotion! Poor ol' Dom really gets to me on this one. Wish this clip had been a little longer to show Antoinette beating up on Dom afterwards. Hilarious and sad at the same time. I love this movie!! Rest in peace Dom, Anne, Ron and Estelle.
Hey Luvvy, I did an experiment...I got a current menu from a local, reasonably priced Chinese take-out. I had to change some things, like substitute shrimp for lobster and duck just try and find a place today that still offers duck. My first pass was to go with smal (pint) where I could, second was with the Large (quart). Most places have caught on to the boneless spareribs being cheaper and all meat so those prices are just about the same: Small where available: $207.60, large: 241.10
LD, you said it. Even when I first saw this movie some years ago, I was amazed at the amount of food you could get for $40.(according to the movie, anyway). That seemed like a lot of food to eat, but today, I could probably eat $40 worth of Chinese food when I was feeling sick and not so hungry!!! LOL
Please no snide comments anyone about getting a life, I'm laid up with a knee injury and love Chinese food, just thought I'd like to see how it turned out. I have to believe the people making the film had no idea what Chinese food cost because $40 for all that is pretty cheap even considering it was 30+ years ago.
@@frankpasquini9892 Pretty good these days. Played a lot of ice hockey in my younger days and I'm paying the price now that I'm older. Thanks for asking Cheech :)
They cut off the best part- "You ate forty dollars worth of chinese food and you're SOOOORRY?!!"
That's such an Italian thing to say
Yup. 40 bucks got you a lot more back in 1980.

If only we could find this movie somewhere. It was adorable, Anne and Dom were amazing actors. RIP both of them.
Did anyone think it was weird that all the containers on top of the bag were open

Fourty dollars for two bags of chinese food! Gosh! That's cheap!
Late 1970's
And it was most likely great Chinese food. Not like today where the ribs are insanely chewy and takes 10 mins to eat one.
anne bancroft continues to be the best actress ever! RIP
RIP Dom you were a funny funny guy

If only you could still get that much Chinese food for $40! Now you pay that much just for half a bag.
RIP Dommy, I love ya.
4 orders of spare ribs alone would be $40 today...LOL

I want to reach in the screen and hug him.
I know she was so mad at him but damn she had no right hitting him. Truly break my heart so sad 💔😓💔😓💔
That's how Italians communicate, through food and mild violence.
