- How do you make working at hospital funny?
I don't know but Scrubs seemed to do it pretty well.
9 Seasons. 8 of which are mostly loved by fans, the last mostly ignored by anybody watching TV.
Fans didn't want to see a passing of the torch.
They wanted J.D and Turk not Lucy and Cole.
From the best of times to the worst of times... this is the day Scrubs died.

Everyone trying to correct on the last season of the show NOT being marketed as the final season of Scrubs.... yes, it was. In the United States it was billed as being "Season 9" There are interviews with the cast both past and present confirming this. The showrunner even specifically said he begged them to promote it as a new follow up, but they didn't.
Here in the States... this was Scrubs Season 9.
We were lied to. I remember watching the "series" finale and then I was shook and happy to learn about the new season. Then when I watched it, I hated it. Not that it was "bad" it just ruined the original Scrubs story
But even before it aired, it was publicly known that Bill Lawrence was treating this as a spin-off, not another season. When season 9 first aired, I went into it knowing exactly what it was going to be, and I liked it just fine for what it was.
And the theme song at the beginning of every season 9 episode did very clearly say, "Scrubs Med School".
@@criticalfallacy it's only "publicly known" if you were looking for the info. As a 13 year old kid, I can tell you I wasn't looking up everything on my favorite shows, let alone Scrubs, I was just watching what was put out every season. I'm sure a good chunk of people at that time wasn't researching everything about Scrubs and was just pleased to get another season.
@@criticalfallacy Lol no you did not stop lying. None of that was publiclly known. He asked the network to treat is as a spin off and to give it a different name but they refused. They wanted the same name cuz they wanted the fans back and marketed it as such. Hence they said it was Scrubs "season 9" that in itself shows a continuation.
You are correct, but there is no Scrubs season 9, There is no war in Ba Sing Se
The episode where Dr. Cox doesn’t realize he’s going to his brother in laws funeral.... One of the best episodes of TV ever. The Wizard of Oz episode...brilliant.
I cried like a bitch
ABSOLUTELY!! Holy sh** that hit me right in the feels. 😢😭
‘Everything comes down to poo’ song though
“Where do you think you are?”
RIP Brandon Fraser
The episode where where Dr Cox's ex wife came & dropped bombshells of secrets about everybody was a perfect season ender.
Oh yeah!
In his defense that's kind of the only one. The only other season ender I remember was when JD and Elliot almost kissed while she was engaged to Keith and JD was having a baby with Kim
Definitely priceless
How could he forget that when talking about "perfect finales"?
Season 2 ended with Cox punching Kelso
I think the reason why Season 8 is so good is because it was cathartic. J.D. grows up, the relationship between he and Elliot takes off and feels so natural, Ted finds love, The Janitor and J.D. finally makes peace, Dr. Cox finally runs the hospital...it was just absolutely perfect. It was a great way to end. To tie up loose ends and make all of the fans happy.
Plus, season 5-7 always seemed a lot more "cartoon-y" in their style. The characters became overly flanderized (maybe with the exception of Dr. Cox) to the point of some of them becoming insufferable, and apart from a few episodes here and there (perfect example: My Lunch) the perfect blend of drama and comedy the show had before was gone. I still think those seasons are good overall, but they lack what made the first couple of seasons special. Then season 8 came along and fixed all that. It really felt like a more "grown-up" version of seasons 1-4.
They ended at a high, and that's what any show should aim to do.
Don't forget the legendary book of Dr.Cox's quotes!! Some fans would still want it.. myself included!.
RIP Ted
@@AD240pCharlie I was about to say the same thing.. In the mid seasons 4 to 7 they got a bit to self aware, things got brighter, more cartoon, and they where doing jokes referencing the season 1 and 2 audio commentaries. Season 8 feels like a direct sequel to season 1, the colors get more muted, the cases more serious and the humor comes from more natural situations.. And of course the feels of the finale.. I usualy choke up on final epsiodes of series I love especially sit coms.. But the scrubs one hits me more than will turning off the lights at the banks house..
@@mullaoslo I feel like season 5 had some sad episodes though, emotional for sure.
Yoou can tell different Seasons by Elliots haircuts, thats the thing that divides the seasons :D

I'm almost hurt you didn't say much about Dr. Cox. I swear he was easily the best character.
the janitor
@@aritzmartinezrodriguez1825 no, he is near the top though.
Agreed, 100%. He had the best and most emotional arc. We learned so much about him and he grew so much over the series as we started to understand him better.
@@tonyibraham5931 The janitor appearances were scared but Avery word from his mouth was a golden nugget of absurd and unexpected comedy. And for that he is my favorite. Quite close to doctor Cox though.
@@aritzmartinezrodriguez1825 definitely respect your opinion. I think between his rants and his true character beneath his bravado that is uncovered over time makes Dr. Cox my favorite. Also, he is clearly a character driven by trauma and that is relatable for me.

"Bloop"
That ending made me really sad
It is still hard to believe that he is gone.
just wait til he boing fwips this.
Sux. Somehow it had to happen to Ted though.
One thing I hated in the med school season was they made Kelso and cox hate each other again. Undoing the friendship they got in season 8

RIP Lee Thompson Young, died in 2013. 5:19
I knew in Sam and Lee but damn I hand no idea Seymour had died.
In my memory "season 9" was always a new show called "scrubs: interns". So i always thought it was a new series and i didn't dislike it, so it was pity that the series ended. I always "knew" it wasnt scrubs.
Exactly!
What season 9? No such thing
I looked that up because I remembered not only the name Scrubs:Interns, but I also remembered Aziz Ansari clearly in it. Turns out Scrubs: Interns was a web series that released in tandem with the season 9 episodes, and for some reason I’m remembering it and can’t remember seeing even one moment of the actual season 9.
@@averyeml same
I think scrubs Season 9 is not canon . The creador told to the fans that sea son 9 should be consider a ñew show with one only season . So in general scrubs just have 8 season
I loved this show so much
except the part that doesn't exist
?
😂😂😂
The hallway scene in the season 8 finale makes me cry every time no matter how many times I see it. I think the real reason most fans hate or ignore season 9 has nothing to do with the quality of the season. It's that it cheapens what a perfect ending season 8 was.
I like Carla, she keeps the other characters grounded. But this seems to be a very unpopular opinion.
I think she started off that way but she later became insufferable. She was always my least favourite character in the show and this video highlighted exactly Why to me.
@@emperorreign6154 Alright I see where you're coming from. But for me, the character I hated the most is Elliot. I can't stand her being so self-involved. And yes, I know she would not end up with Keith but the way they broke up and how she isn't seemed a wee bit concerned that she destroyed someone else's life irks me til the end of the series (yes, I know she acknowledges it in a later episode and but it doesn't fix that guy's life automatically)
I love her too
@@emperorreign6154 She's almost as bad as Peggy Hill.
I think you mean turk. Turk keeps everyone grounded
To be fair, the beginning of season nine wasn't that bad, UNTIL J.D. disappeared
There ain’t no season 9
Yes, Season 8 had the perfect send off for the entire show. There was literally NO reason for them to continue on for an extra season with new interns that we didn't care about as much as the old cast, except for making more money. The cash cow goes "MOO"! 🤑🐮💵 Also, Rest in Peace, Sam Lloyd, our favourite singing lawyer! 😍
Well, at least we can pretend that that was the ending and this didn't happen. Which is more than I can say for some other shows.
They didn't continue with the original series. There was no season 9. There are 8 seasons of scrubs, and one season of scrubs: med school, which was the spin-off. It only became "season 9" AFTER it was canceled so they could bundle it with the original scrubs and sell the DVDs. And there was a very good reason for it. It was right after the writers strike and most of the crew was struggling financially so Lawrence made the spin-off so they could work.
ALL of this was confirmed by creator Bill Lawrence, and when med school originally aired it was marketed and in the opening sequence it was called med school. So, no the original series didn't continue it was spun off, and yes there as a very good reason to do it.
Sam Lloyd and his band in Hawaii singing Outkast's "Hey Ya" is great. But when he sings the lyrics "nothing last forever" gives me chills because of his passing. ✌
@@jdzspace33 Actually the writers' strike happened between season 7 and 8, as you see from the lenght of those seasons. Season 9 was forced by the channel. Bill Lawrence has let people understand that season 9 is not his creation, and does not consider it canon.
@@lorenzoamato953 - well at the reunion he special a few years back (2 maybe 3 years) he said he did it because the crew was having trouble finding work. Maybe he just said that to sound nice, but he has never shied away about not liking the spin-off and it not being canon
Scrubs season one finale was a definitive finale and on of the most cliffhanger scenes ever as Jordan ruins everyones friendships and that last shot where cox walks away from JD after he leans JD slept with Jordan if that's not a cliffhanger I don't know what is
Scrubs is one of my favorite comedies. For me it ended with season 8.
Season 8 had one of the best endings a sitcom could wish for, beautifully done. Why piss it all away for a 'new cast' season, especially after seeing the damage of Joey and that 70's show final season?
Silly person. Everyone knows Scrubs only had 8 seasons.
Modisana just like That 70s Show only has 7 seasons
Season 9 had some of the worst characters in television history
Last season don’t count Lmaooo
They created a great series ending at the end of season 8. So that's when it ended.
@@sarakeeet it was 8. Season 7 was short because of the writers' strike.
The problem with the JD and Eliot relationship, from what I remember from the dvd interviews, was that at one point the writers decided that they didn't want them to be together at all. I believe this was when JD got her to break up with her boyfriend only to decide he didn't want to be with her. This was, if I remember correctly, meant to be a permanent break up. At some point they changed their minds, idk when because I think that was the last season I watched on dvd
Kindasorta . . . but Bill said that he pretty much always had the series finale in his head, and it - that being what was eventually the S8 finale - came off pretty much the way he had intended.
Someone finally talked about my favourite doctor show . I wish they kept this show on Netflix.
I think it's on Hulu now.
It's on hulu now.
It's also on prime now as well
I bought all eight seasons on DVD long ago. Physical media rules.

so sad about Sam Lyod, one of my favourite Figures in Scrubs
He was such a talented musician too!
JD also became a parody of himself in the later seasons.
in the best way possible
i remember on my second viewing i noticed at some point his voice just sounded like a caricature of the voice jd has
JD had the same problem as Ted from HIMYM. They both became progressively weak, unmanly and to some degree gay while still loving women.
In England it was marketed as Scrubs: Med School, so that tempered our expectations & I guess they learned from America that that was the way to go instead of tryna trick people.
Manchester born and bred here, never have I once seen it referred to as ‘Scrubs: Med School’
Never ever seen it called that?
@@geremypietralczyk9374 Not on TV listings, no. But they did totally rework the intro sequence so that it says "SCRUBS MED SCHOOL" on the x-ray.

England born an bred and watched this show as it aired and never in my time watching this series on tv or streaming have I EVER seen it referred to as Scrubs: Med School. LMAO what kinda bullshit is this.
3:23 He was a young adult he didn't exactly have his life on track, See J.D. and Elliot actually make more sense as an end goal for each other, See Ross and Rachel were a mess together and Ted and Robin was a relationship we had all grown past but Scrubs I see as a series about growing up, and J.D. and Elliot's stories and their growth meant that whilst they didn't have everything figured out they were still trying and by the end when they got together they had grown up figured their lives out and figured out that they were meant to be together.
First rule of Scrubs, we don't talk about season 9
Like we don't talk about season 4 of Community 😂
@Lilith Ironwine I agree, after the season 8 finale you can't really top that in my opinion

A Sitcom that actually made me cry from time to time. Shows how great it was.
Scrubs was one of those amazing shows that just finished perfectly and didn’t overstay it’s welcome. I don’t consider the “9th season” part of the show and it ended after the 8th. That show aired perfectly for all of high school and college and was a major influence on my life. It’s easily my favorite show ever up there with Seinfeld (perhaps both best of each generation...although there is the office in the 2000’s...sooo tricky).
Same here. Scrubs is the reason why I became a nurse
One of the best shows ever. Rewatching it now on Hulu. Just never realized how horrible Carla really was. Thanks for doing this video.
The only thing I like about Season 9 is the blonde angry chick. She was hot.

You can say that again.
I've been rewatching Scrubs for the past couple months, and I think the Carla hate is undeserved. Of course, like any sitcom, she sometimes says and does things that can be annoying, but for the most part she was a strong woman who wanted her husband to treat her like an equal. I like her.
Scrubs was the most accurate depiction of my residency life. I think I saw 1 ep of season 9 and I was like “I’m out”...

Season one finale jordan stirring things up with the main group was a very funny finale..
They usually ended up seasons on some kind of hanger. For example, I finished season 5, Elizabeth Banks, JD girlfriend, gets pregnant at the end of the episode along with Carla and Jordan. You never notice because they just continue normally after that. Also, Carla was very nice at the start. Later she becomes a monster that doesnt let Turk do basic things without bitching at him. He wasnt allowed to eat or drink properly because she was pregnant and she couldnt do it. I know you are pregnant, but cmon sister. Also, when it was on TV I never thought of "Scrubs" as some "raunchy show" that is innapropriate at all. But man, today PC types would have a field day with it. Even Zack Braff admitted in an interview few days ago.
I remember Carla being the other way. The girl got triggered by literally everything in the first two seasons. If Turk was such a constant saint I'd have sworn they were setting up a Kelso Jackie relationship from season one of That 70's show, where Turk wants to break up but is too much of a bitch to do it
Could always tell different seasons by Elliot’s hair lol

I think largely with J.D., Cox, Turk, Elliot, Janitor and Kelso being so funny all the time )along with the supporting members like The Todd) you barely notice the straight character.
Carla wasn't ugly man, but honestly Turk was better
Disney ruining Scrubs was just a practice run for them ruining Star Wars.
Ironically some of what was done to scrubs was the Star Wars sequels.
Omg. So true!
Was it Disney that did season 9?
@@garystinten9339 season 8 was actually disney as well. Everything before was NBC
And Lion King, and Beauty and the Beast, and Aladdin. Don’t forget those.
I forget how season 3 ends, but season 1 ends with jordan dropping a bomb on the group and 2 ends with Cox sticking up for the residents by punching Kelso in the face. Pretty big season closers imo.
Also, most seasons start with JD taking on some new level of responsibility in the hospital, and the finale before usually references that upcoming change.
Carla and Turk married in the season 3 finale (and Eliott is talking a bit to Sean after having broken up but stays alone). I think that was a very smooth ending. I'm curious how the next one ended as I'm currently rewatchting it.
Dr Cox smashed Colin Hays’ Overkill guitar.
Dr. Cox: “There you go.”
Colin Hay: “I have other songs...”
Dr Cox: “Yeah, you do...”
I'm a diehard Scrubs fan and Season 8 was a pretty good ending for the show, but I still enjoyed season 9 quite a lot. I just wish they had continued with it.
I really need to re-watch it. I was expecting to come away from this video with a sense of disappointment in Scrubs, but you have renewed my faith in it. I might give it a repeat viewing. I sort of drifted away after season five (it just lacked the magic of previous seasons), so practically anything after that will be new ground to me. Thanks for another great video, Vee.
I find your Carla take ridiculous, some of the most impactful emotional moments come from this character. She's a source of strength and confidence for JD, for much of this series.
The JD & Eliot story wasn’t that bad but I guess I only think that way cause I saw it play out when it Originally aired . But bingeing it I can see how it sucks

It's a show of nearly 20 years ago (omg 🙀🙀🙀 ) and it is not so common that you can see strong women like in Scrubs
If by strong you mean bitch? Then yes. I’d argue the women in friends were strong without coming across as nagging and they’re from almost 30 years ago.
@@firemarshal2629 bad example: Phoebe is completelly crazy, Monica an obsessive compulsive cleaner and Rachel a narcisist. None of them is "strong". I mean: also in Scrubs they have some defects, but are complete by themself, without needing a man
Real Heel Ryan friends is a horrible example of strong female characters. Pheobe isn’t even a character, just a gag
I was coming here to say this! Carla even tries to reject Turk because he wasn't mature enough for her. She's constantly the support for them regardless of what she's going through. And the "attitude" that is so distasteful to so many men is what we see in most of the nurses. Especially Laverne! Who is actually praised for being herself and calling out all the bs. I agree she shouldn't have pushed for JD to move and should have found a place for her and Turk, but I'm blaming the writers on this one. Too often they gave JD a pass when he was an absolute ass. They made it everyone's fault when it was usually his. He was literally stuck in his childhood and it took everyone to pull him out of it, which doesn't happen until around the birth of his son. Yes, this is common for man men but it's such a tired narrative. I was happy to see intelligent women of color on this show with depth who weren't just NPC's helping the main character figure themselves out.
Ha I always just took Carla on face value as a ball busting bitch character. She walked all over turkleton and shat on his bestie at every opportunity as that kinda chick would. She was played convincingly by a moderately attractive actress so I never really hated her character even though irl that type of person would shit me.
Just finished the binge and i agree with everything you have said.
I just searched for this yesterday and was sad I couldn't find it, but now it's here
The good thing is: Season 8 had the perfect ending and it's possible to ignore 9. Just like Star Wars 7,8 and 9.

Scrubs usually couldn't have a proper ending during most of their seasons because they never knew if they were coming back or not.
You listened and I didn’t have to ship my box set half way across the world, thank you
Oh sweet Summer Child!
Seasons didn’t necessarily need grandiose season finales (they do exist, but they weren’t requirements) because in the before times seasons didn’t drop to be consumed in two days for you to wait a year with your nice story all wrapped up. In the before times we watched once a week, and then you new the season was over because it was May and there was no TV next week.
Specifically with Scrubs, it is about medical residency where “the power of friendship” is needed to overcome a soul-crushing work environment. In the real world it’s June 30, then it’s July 1 and you’re a second year. And you just keep doing your job.
The problem with scrubs is that every episode was one if the same 3-5 episode "skeletons" with different jokes hung off them.
Explain?

Bat nipples were Joel’s idea. He also wanted to go back to the kid friendly campy Batman from the 60’s.
I have been a Scrubs viewer since day one, and I think you nailed it. The 9th season could have been a good stand-alone series given the chance.
And thanks for yanking the bandaid off the Carla situation. I LOVE Judy Reyes and she had brilliant moments, but she became a giant buzz kill over the run of the show. She herself has been quoted as begging the writers to give her some jokes.

Those german subtitles really threw me off there for a second 😊😊
I followed this TV-show as it aired, and ever since it has been my go to feel good TV-show of all times. I remember the confusion when I watched the first episode of the last season. I kept watching it just because I wanted more scrubs. As I started to rewatch all episodes from start to finish periodically throughout the years I accepted the last season as a part of scrubs and everytime I get to that season of the show I look forward to the next rewatch of the show. That is the function the last season has for me and I believe that's positive. Sorry for the long comment, I just love scrubs. Thanks for the video
I dunno, I never felt the show being in favor of JD after he broke up with Elliot on his own accord. I mean, the first time I watched the show, that was just sad. After about a 3rd rewatch I realized that JD is a douche, as a character, that is. I mean, he is shown to be emphatic, but at the same time he's boastful and narcissistic to a degree. He establishes good relationships with his patients, but he's not able to handle his love interests. I guess this mix of traits works, ironic though as it may be.
Regarding Carla -- I do agree that she's the worst. When I re-watched the show for about the 3rd time, I realized that she's quite a toxic person. Then again, Turk seems to be very docile around her, very submissive to her shenanigans. So they kinda work together -- a self-proclaimed alpha male, who yearns for female dominance, and a bossy know-it-all, who's very insecure about her social status. However, the most important thing to note here, is that I actually hated Carla (and sometimes Turk too). And if a character brings out emotions in you, then that character works! He might be unbearable, but the writing hit home. So Carla being as she is ultimately underlines, just how good the show's writing is.
I always disliked the Janitor though. I think he was actually the weakest character on the show -- due to the very random nature of his violence towards everyone. Sometimes he's just a hard-ass, and his deeds aren't funny (like when he locked JD in a water tower). The running gag of the show, the Janitor's vendetta towards JD -- now that is something that really seems forced. Their violent interactions sometimes caused me to scratch my head and ask: "Why the hell did the Janitor do this?", and not feel anything.
But then again, that's just my personal opinion. The show is still very lovable :3
The Day Roseanne Died when? The revival and subsequent Conners show doesn’t count lol
The hated ninth season was actually intended as a reboot.
And they had some season finales, like Laverne's exit when they thought the show was over.
George Clooney made me laugh a ton in Oh Brother Where Art Thou and Fantastic Mr. Fox. Also in every interview I've ever seen him in. Funny guy.
There wasn't a season 9, season 8 ended and that was it, never to be seen again
The more I watch Scrubs the more annoying JD becomes. Dr. Cox is still awesome though.
The older I get the more I dislike most of the characters ... but still really like the show
Nah surprisingly he never really annoyed me
JD was annoying by season 4... In real time
Absolutely agree with all this. I actually wouldn't have mind a Scrubs med school season 2
The one episode i watched was the one where JD held a class hostage because he thought one of them didn’t like him, which seemed like such an assassination of his character development (they even shaved him!) that i was instantly turned off.
