- Had the privilege of heading up and surf fishing in Ventura for the very first time. The primary target on this trip was to sight fish some big Corbina and while it took some work, Ventura did not disappoint!
Most importantly, I had the honor of meeting up and fishing with my friends Acel and Ilya. Quality individuals and I had a blast getting to hang out with them and explore new waters. Thank you guys for your help and guidance and most of all your camaraderie.

Thank you for visiting and fishing in Ventura! Our humble community if often overlooked but our coastal areas are pretty cool 👍🏽
Without a doubt it was an honor to fish in Ventura and I am very grateful. Every person I ran into while I was there was so nice, wasn’t sure if it was just coincidence but even your comment makes me believe that Ventura is an amazing place with amazing people. Thank you!
@@BenjieKimFishing no it’s not it’s truly an ass place and nobody here knows how to fish at all 😂 😭
@@scotty187prolearner9 lol kinda true, mostly surfers
Beautiful Corbina!
Ok I’ll subscribe. I’ve fished Ventura since I was a kid.
Thank you! Ventura certainly has so much fishy water, would love to explore and put more time in future years!
a good fishing place my brother ,, I really like fishing in a place like this. the spirit of my brother 👍🐟🎣🎣🎣
I liked that underwater shot at the end, when you released that 22 inch catch!!
Thanks Derick! Sometimes I wish I had a helper to take that footage. It’s chaos multitasking lol.
Benjie Kim, great vid! Awesome to show you some spots in VTA. Nice PB bro! Tight lines! 🔥
You the real mvp in this story brotha, thank you so much for EVERYTHING
I LOVE this video! Thank you Benjie!
Let’s get em brotha!
@@BenjieKimFishing That's what I'm sayin! Tomorrow morning, 6am minus tide, no wind, 3.5' waves, I'm gonna try and be out there before I start my day. Good luck to you man.
Fished this area for 40 years for corbina to yellowtail, halibut just love this whole area. County line ,the deep hole area is just awesome when biting. Leo carrillo has lots of big corbina also. Lots over 20 inches.
Wow that’s amazing 😳! Thanks for the intel. You’ve got wisdom I’d love to have. Hopefully time will be gracious and I’ll be willing to learn each time I’m lucky enough to have a line in the water.
@@BenjieKimFishing were all learning even i an old fart learns something every day i go fishing. Thats the fun hope you catch that monster fish you dream of!!!
Nice fishing! I love the Ventura shoutout! I live just up the coast in Santa Barbara and the Corbina fishing is great up here. Thanks for all the great content and tips. Keep it up🤙🏻
Thanks Spencer 🤙! Loved fishing Ventura, some great fishing and really nice community. Creeped up towards Carpinteria but haven’t had a chance to fish SB yet. And yes, the corbina are abundant up there! Appreciate the positive vibes man, thank you!
Benjie Kim Fishing Ohh man Carpinteria is my home town! If you ever make it back up that way try fishing at Carp point, there is a reef about 100 yards off the beach and the fishing is killer.
Dope man thanks for the pro tip!
rock on brotha,,thank you, corbina up here are super skiddish,,,im going to try out your technique
salud!!
Man, beans are skittish anywhere especially if you are sight fishing em. They drive many of us crazy! But that 1 bite is always worth it!
Another great video!!
Thanks for the tip on fishing the crab beds. Got a PB 19" bean last Monday at Huntington last Monday.
Dooooope bro, congrats man. Next 2 months are prime time!!
Got’em!!!
Thanks geo!!!
Dope! Congrats on the pb corbina!!🤙🏽🤙🏽🤙🏽

Yet another quality video, Thanks for the content Benjie, Hope to see you on the water soon.

Thanks always Rudy! Yea, would be dope to link up sometime, kit! And would love a custom job from u man, your stuff is SICK! I’ll email you! 🤙🤙
u should try the illusive white seabass monster that lurks in the shallows at goleta pier...that fish seems like it never eats, lol
haha wow, well I guess there's a reason that its so big!
I subscribed...Ventura is rad. Don't tell anybody
Never fished in Ventura as a local, but nice to see some fishing here 🙃
Thanks dan, it was an honor to experience your local waters and had a great time! 🤙
Slayin' as always!
Thanks Jon, dude you're on the YT grind and growing! You are always an inspiration for me, thank you.

Thanks Steven, it was like 1 mm bigger than my previous lol. We both looking for something bigger!!
@@BenjieKimFishing let's get the 25"er out of the way so we can focus on the 30"er lol
my hometown!
Awesome man, it was a privilege to fish there and everyone I ran into had such positive vibes.
Excellent video!
Thanks Adam!
Great job you were in my neck of the woods. Even though I prefer to fish the South Bay
Oh cool, I didn’t know u were up there! When it comes to beans, I think the South Bay is my current favorite.
Bro I've seen big ones in Hermosa Beach.. I was on the rocks near Chart house restaurant... They were like wolves in water eating up everything.. Awesome to see
Oh man, so exciting got my blood pumping!
@@BenjieKimFishing go check it out sometime.. ✌️.. Everytime I go there lil pressure there hardly anyone is fishing
🔥
I live in Ventura and just finished fishing, caught 7 barred perch and nothing else
That's a good session right there! Seems like the beans are always kind of around up there but Summer they should be everywhere!
@.57 No "social distancing"? Haha... thanks for sharing this great fishing vid. There was one excellent fishing spot just south of Refugio State Park (you can walk to get there from the camp ground... it's more like a paved bike trail). That water was full of perch and I caught more than 20 in 2 hours. When I go up there again I will definitely try to catch big corbinas.
Thank you for the positivity and tips! Yea man, there is so much more water to explore there and I know I missed out on some excellent spots. I'm looking forward to trying it again some time!
Nice catch sick bean
Thanks Mario, appreciate it!
Benjie can you show us how you catch your sand crabs? I have never used them and have no idea how to catch them to use for fishing. Thank you so much.
Hey Carl, I've made a decent number of videos on finding sand crabs, here are a couple that cover some of the important details -
ua-cam.com/video/aS5CfD14tm8/v-deo.html
ua-cam.com/video/riBLJOFc644/v-deo.html (this one is one of the first videos I ever made and its really embarrassing but I think there's some useful info here)
ua-cam.com/play/PLsz2XMNXn3k8hzFIkrSCm5wnfQQY2RxDv.html (this is a playlist that has a good number of other videos where I at least touch on how to find and harvest them)
I hope that helps!
Ditto
Some great angling in this clip. Inspiring!
Can you please share what size weight are you using and how far above the weight is tied above the sandcrabs on a #8-12 mosquito hook?
Thanks Matt! I believe I was using a 1/8 oz bullet sinker and it was about 15”-18” above the hook.
Keep in mind, the size of the weight should vary based on the water conditions that day. Lighter is better for calm and heavier for rough. I will range from a split shot up to 3/4 oz depending on the day in SoCal. 🤙
So good bro! You did a great job of fishing, and also producing this video.
I think you were fishing some of my backyard fishing holes. I have questions about camera/microphone, for making some of my own fishing videos.
What cams/mics/tripods do you use? Is that just one go-pro on chest and tripod, + your phone? Do you use a selfie stick? Or some stick for your go pro? How'd you get the underwater shot?
What microphone and audio recorder are you using?
Please any tips to help me get better audio/video. Thanks
Hey thanks Vincent! I use a GoPro hero black 7 mounted on my backpack strap as my primary. It’s pricey but I like the footage compared to a chest mount. You can check it out in the link in this vid description. Not an essential but it’s what I use.
I also use a GoPro session with a mini tripod that I’ll set up on the ground or nearby structure when it’s safe to do so. I don’t use any sticks. The underwater shot I used my session. It’s hard when doing it all by myself but I just do the best I can. For external mic I use purple panda lavalier on amazon with a GoPro adapter.
Hope that helps!
Also, I don’t know what setting u take footage with but consider using super view as it allows a better range for getting the rod and hooksets into view.
@@BenjieKimFishing Thanks boss! I made a note of your comments, and I'll be ordering a cam tonight hopefully. How about a lavelier mic? Is that what you use to get that nice isolated, close mic sound, without wind noise? I hear a "Squid" is a really good mic, what do you think?
when you fish with sand crabs are you doing a slow retrive or letting them sit
A little bit of both and really depends on conditions and beach. But generally speaking, I will do a slow retrieve. If there's a nice current, I can also cast to the side and let the current move my sand crab in a natural presentation so in that case, I'm technically dead sticking..but my bait is still "moving."
hope that helps and tight lines.
Went back to Huntington on 7-20. Apparently, the water rolled over during the weekend. The lifeguard said the water temp was 61! Needless to say the fish were in shock. Better luck next time...
Ugh, yea man water temp needs to be at around 68 to get em in that skinny water. I was aware of the drop but I tried for em twice anyways this week too. I was hoping to be surprised and find em but they were nowhere. Next week should hopefully be better!
I lived in Ventura for 16 great years. I know exactly where this spot is and I caught a bunch of big corbina there. Great fun! Good video thanks.
Thanks so much Chuck, I had a wonderful time in Ventura!
Hello could you please give me the exact location /Thank you very much
Hey man I could be wrong but there isn’t a min size on Corbina in the southern management area.
Thanks for the comment! Yes, you are correct - there is no size limit. I just like to practice catch and release (most of the time). 🤙
Does that backpack come with those rod holders or are they a separate item? Can you provide link please? thanks.
Idk what backpack he’s using but I got mine that has two rod holding loops on amazon. It’s the spiderwire backpack. I think it was $50. You can see a bunch of videos on UA-cam of them.
The back pack does come with the rod holders installed. The company is fishnpack and you can pick them up at fishnpack.com or on amazon as well.
Hey boss im from ventura and just wanted to see how surf fishing is did you land this fish between the harbor and the pier theres like 4 rocky spots there was it in one of them?
Hey Brian, this was the first and only time I've been up there (almost a year ago) but if memory serves me correctly, I believe so. This was also during the Summer ie peak Corbina season. 🤙
I have lived in Ventura for a while cant really pin point this spot north of the pier,
Benji,
Great video! I see you use very light tackle (4lbs leader). Do you feel that a 10lbs test would affect your bite much?
Thanks
Thanks for the comment! If you are sight fishing Corbina, 10 lb might be on the heavier side but I don't have the experience nor scientific data to prove it as viable or non-viable. While I do know several experienced sight fishermen that use even 2 lb (!!!), I also know equally experienced fishermen that prefer 6 lb, and others that exclusively use 8-15 lb straight braid with a split shot! I guess at the end of the day, everyone should go with what they are confident with and brings them results.
Again, this is specific to sight fishing Corbina in 6" of water. Perch, yellowfin croaker, and other socal surf critters don't discriminate line type. With Corbina, regardless of what one believes, the big ones in super skinny water are extremely wary, and without a doubt, presentation is critical.
Benjie Kim Fishing 🙏🏼
So true
What you doing letting the Corbina go? They good eating and white meat.
I hear they are good eating but I’ve released 100% of the corbina I’ve caught. I chase them for the love and I respect them as a jewel in our SoCal waters. It also means more fish for you and everyone else!
Every make it up to Santa Barbara ?
No, I hear it’s some good water up there tho. Would love to fish it one of these days 👍
Is it Ventura County, California Beach?
Hey where was this spot at ? You were near the pier?
Kind of. I was north of the pier 🤙
What was your rod/reel selection for the day?
Shimano Stradic ci4 3k with Phenix trifecta lite 8 ft 🤙
Benjie Kim Fishing thank you sir 🙏🏽
BurningHeart JoelAlvarado np wishing you a great day, tight lines 🤙!
What is the advantage of using such light line? Why are you using 4lb instead of 8lb, or even 20 lb?
Light line surf fishing is a popular, yet niche style perhaps made most popular by Bill Varney's book Surf Fishing - The Light Line Revolution. While most surf critters (perch, yellowfin croaker, etc) in socal waters are not line shy, there is a fair amount of debate whether Corbina are line shy. I don't believe they are as I know several Corbina legends who fish them on straight braid and a split shot. However, the big Corbina that we hunt in 6" of water are extremely smart and presentation is key. Regardless of line type, the best sight fishing corbina fishermen I personally know use extremely small hooks (size 8 to size 12 mosquito), which logically correlates to smaller line diameter (braid/fluoro/mono).
But to reiterate, I don't claim this as the only way to fish for them, it is merely one way to do it, and it happens to be my favorite. Hope that makes sense!
What exact part of Ventura is that??
Thank you !
Thanks for watching Andrew, unfortunately I don't reveal specific locations. I did walk many miles in Ventura during my short time there. Many great stretches of sand to fish 👍
The first part of the video, looks like you are actually North of Ventura, closer to Mussel Shoals on the Rincon? The later spot near the jetty I'm not sure about, maybe either Faria Beach or South of Ventura nearer Oxnard?
To be honest with you, I can’t remember off the top of my head exactly which beaches I was on. I DID walk a lot of miles so I’m pretty sure I crossed some of those you mentioned.
What beach in Ventura where you at
I think I fished 10 different beaches during my time there. From the Ventura port/bay all the way to Carpinteria.
What do u use for bait
Sand Crabs! They are free and plentiful during the Summer
If you head up this way to Ventura again reach out to me on Instagram @cades.got.angles I’ve got a spot up here that I’ve seen 15-20 beans schooled up at a time.
What is the size limit for Corbina?
There is no size limit though I've been told that the smaller 17" to 18" seem to taste the best. I've never kept one though so I don't have personal experience.
Thank you
What ventura beach??
Where is this location?
Come on .:; drama lol
every california fishing video has all the fake drought clouds, so sad, we are under attack....
Huhhh???
