People overlook boats like this but honestly you can have a blast for not a crazy amount of money.
Just be a good swimmer speaking from experience 😄
Everybody loves Iowa. Right? Your enthusiasm and lovely fields and big blue sky -- well, that's the .Midwest and it's cool. You're cool too. Like the vids man.
Johns the kind of guy I could see choosing to drive the oldest squad car he can at work and then carb swap it and throw in a cassette player
Every king needs his Crown......Vic LMAO
Keep the videos coming. You are a positive guy and always have an upbeat outlook. Breath of fresh air in this polarized world
Hey thanks man gotta keep on keeping on 😁
That sounds brings back so many memories for me
Love the dog's assistance on the voice over. Keep up the good work!
You can't beat these old Sea Ray Boats. I have a 1981 SRV 197 SXL Mercruiser 260. I'm the 3rd owner since 2001 great boat.
Holy crap I think thats the same exact boat my dad had when I was a little kid in the 80's.
It came from Wisconsin
That’s the motor in my S-10!! Them things are indestructible!! Drove that thing over 400K!! Loved that truck and that motor!!!
That's actually a nice boat. Great find.
Loved this! I just got an 87’ Seville in pretty good shape for 2500 bucks and taking it out for the first time in the next day or so. Wish me luck!
Good luck man I hope it makes a good vessel for you
Love it. Great job man!!! Great find!! Love your enthusiasm as always
Great video, John! Love it!
Great job on the boat 👍🏻💛🙏🏻
My favorite boats by far are the ones my friends own...💰💸💸
I have a 1978 4Winns with same engine.boat looks identical. Video helped
Awesome I’m glad man 😁
I grew up on the bigger brother version of this same boat. 1977 model, which was identical to this one but with brown interior. Had an OMC stringer drive in it with a 350. Great boat. Heavy (ours was the 21ft version) - searay says these were overbuilt for their time as fiberglass methods weren't what they are now, so everything was "extra done", but man it handled rough water better than any of my more modern boats. My dad restored it from the stringers-up. This was back in the 90's so no YT video, but it looked like a new/modern boat once he was done. Loved that thing until that old OMC drive finally gave up one day and finding parts was just too difficult. Yours obviously won't have that issue being a mercruiser. That little 4cyl might be a bit anemic in that boat once you get a full load of people in it.. single ski deep-water starts could be tricky, but should still be a lot of fun for double ski/wakeboard/tube etc. Enjoy!!
[edit] - I just saw you got up on single! Ate some water for awhile like I was suspecting, but you did it! Well done!!
Hahaha thanks it only took throwing everyone in the front of the boat 😂
I haven't seen a mustache water-skiing since 1985. How majestic!
Thank you I was gonna wear a cowboy hat while I did it but I thought people would mistake me for Allan Jackson
Clamato in beer !!! Hey that's a Canadian thing !!! Hello from Canada !!
Hello 👋 from Iowa 😎
most Sea Rays built before Bayliner bought out Sea Ray are really good boats. Make sure you check out the transom and stringers for potential rotting as it is a 41 year old boat.
Nice work John and sweet find on an 82 that looks as clean as a 2022 in that engine bay. Really nice find on that boat.. I have worked on so many boats that are trash from the 80s, and that this is pretty much mint! Sweet find
Props are made for a specific purpose. Speed or towing. You can’t have both. You want a bigger pitch for towing. Seen skiers were drowning before getting enough boat speed
Yeah having 5 people in the boat didn’t help either 😂 I’ll definitely look into the pitch of my prop thanks for the advice 😁
Hi John. Get some Y10 or oxalic acid to take away that yellow mess close to the waterline. She will clean up even more and be no turd
Hey thanks for the advice I didn’t think there was anything that would take that stuff off
@@goldenrustorbust been cleaning boats in the UK for 30 years. Not sure if you can get Y10 but it's amazing stuff and will work like magic. Just don't get it on your hands!!!!
John, I REALLY like your content. Would LOVE to see this EP be about 30 mins. in length (adding wrenching, cussing, laughing, joking, towing, launchiing, etc) More is better when you're good "ol son! Boats are an amazing adventure. The 2.5 Iron Duke would have sprinkled even more epicness on your time capsule vessel. Your 140 3.0L s still a really good power plant. Thank you for your channel!
Hey thank you so much comments like these make my day
i have 84 2.5 GM .. just got it .. any pre use water ready diy at home recommendations /Tips for first trip to the beach would be appreciated from anyone who has any thoughts??? @@goldenrustorbust
Mercruiser ownership step one: replace impeller lol. Seems like a solid boat. I have an 89 with the same engine and its been great.
What a good looking boat. That thing is clean! In the future, you can pop the thermostat out to help with the heat. It can sometimes make a difference with a low flowing water pump.
I hope you have fun this summer with your boat
My grandparents' (I think late-1990s-Early 2000s) Bayliner Capri 1954 had one of these Mercruisers in it. Except it was called the 3.0 Litre. Funny how this engine was originally the Chevy Nova's 153.
Good find of an antique John + too much fun 😆
You really didn't need to drain the oil from the lower unit,to change the impeller but it doesn't hurt.
Good vid.
Curious, how do you keep the oil from leaking out of the upper case once you split the case? Do you plug the hole or turn the upper unit upside down?
@@deksea the upper engine side is a separate, sealed unit. The lower unit also has a seal to keep the gear oil inside.
It's similar to an engine and transmission on a car.
@@ghettsumm7949 The alpha and MR units that I have worked on have a connecting oil passage between the upper and lower cases, seal by an o ring between the mating surfaces. If you noticed, john pumped oil into the lower case and it came out of the bleed hole in the upper case.
My grandpa use to call a beer with clamato juice a kotex cocktail lol
Thanks for the cool video. Always a leaning experience and entertaining.
Make sure the prop has the correct pitch. Very important.
Excellent video John :) also if temperatures get up think be best bet change water pump on 4 cylinders 2.5 litre Iron Duke GM motor plus Thermostat to with new gasket too! Even on Iron Duke a engine belt with 1/8 play on Alternator tension too!
I’ll check these over thanks 👍
@@goldenrustorbust no problem John also one Iron Duke motor be temperatures sensor may need replacement when put new one in to put Telephon tape on threads on sensor with 3 rounds of it to then tight up in hole when tight it tighten up ! Keep from leaking on sensor the Telephon tape make no tape on tip goes in engine to or ground out !
@@AndrewHCann that's not an iron Duke it's a 140 ci
Those 4 cylinder boat engines are reliable as a rock(2/3 of a Chevy 6 engine, made by GM and originally used in early 60's Chevy Nova cars), and usually run well. Get 'er running, and then take it out & play with it! Oh, and put fresh fuel in it with some stabilizer.
Great video!
Great video and that’s an awesome boat.. fantastic condition and clean, great size for a weekend of fun and didn’t take a lot to get it going.
Dude you totally scored! Thats a sweet little boat!
Man it’s a tiny world I just basically just saved the same exact boat but it’s an 86 n got it for the low low price of free fitty, I had to change the water pump… the blades left the chat and weren’t there, cleaned out the fuel system, rebuilt the carb, new battery n box and now I spend most my off time cruising around the Fox River & the chain O’Lakes here in Illinois. Luckily I haven’t had to bust out a thousand on it yet👌
That’s awesome man I hope she makes a good vessel for you
The 3.0 iron duke was the best marine motor ever made. My first boat had the duke. Now we enjoy the water in a 23 ft Chaparral with a 5.7. Keep up the great content!!
Only one Iron Duke. The 2.5L
John drinks a working man's beer God bless em
Damn straight 🇺🇸
I've been working for Sea Ray here in Florida for over 20 years.
That’s awesome I have two of their boats their great 👍 would love some merchandise 👀😏😂
Another awesome and interesting video. boats can be unique to wrench on
Great find! Searays are great boats!
Nice looking boat looks like you're going to have some fun this summer
I like the fact that you drink Original Banquet Beer.
Yep I drink that hamms pbr old Milwaukee anything cold and anything free
@@goldenrustorbust It always tastes better when it's free.
John still has his super powers even without the mullet.
Love it. Fantastic boat. We keep talking about getting one, this has made me want to get one even more lol
great old boat. Lots of bang for the buck there. Just dont run it WOT all the time. Go easy on her and she'll last a long time.
Great stuff buddy love seein shit like this …. Knock back a cold coors for me!
Absolutely will do 🍺
Another successful adventure !! Keep up the cool videos !!
You forgot to mention Phoenix from Wrenchin Redneck. In my opinion that boat is a really good investment I hope you will do some videos from your boat adventures since the weather is getting nicer
That’s a pretty nice boat!
I would love to own that boat over here in Western Washington State!
As I live across the Puget Sound from Seattle (and less than 10 minutes to a Boat Launch), it would be regularly used for fishing/crabbing and some water sports.
Good job
I just replaced the water pump in my 1988 Mercruiser last summer. Getting it all lined up for reassembly was the hardest part.
Love the videos man! I like that you always have so many different kinds of machines on here. Always look forward to seeing new videos keep up the hard work!
Thanks man I’ll keep trying my best 😁
Y’know, I believe Kevin has had good luck finding a couple of mercruiser 302s on marketplace. I wonder if one would fit in this if you can find one
Thats a really good idea
That looks like a bunch of fun
Nice boat!
Good work #ski
I like your videos
Nice job. Going to be a good boat!
Captain John it’s a hell of a day at sea
Nice boat.
Keep up the good work great to see you posting more
Don’t forget Polebarn garage 😁👍
Love ya John 💋
Dude you are a trip I love you!! I watch your videos and they almost kind of relate to mine... Haha keep up the good work dude!!
FYI you don’t need to drain the lower unit oil when removing the lower unit.
Store your old prop onboard somewhere. If you’re running the Mississippi much, you’re going to hit something that will take out the prop and you’ll be glad you’ve got a spare to get you home. Been there, done that…no tee shirt.
Oh yeah trust me she’s definitely on the boat
I love this I do a sea doo and you do a sea scape the only difference is people watch yours lol
way to go :D /,,/ enjoy ur summer from w. germany
Thanks! You too!
I'm pretty sure "cockpit lights" are instrument lights, but I've never been in a SeaRay.
So now you’re a fireman?! That stache is unauthorized 👮♀️
Chief doesn’t mind besides I’m on third shift no one sees me 😂
better than a 10000 dollar boat
Puddin’s fab shop
I have a friend who has the same boat 3.0 mercruiser 4 cylinder engine.
JOHN!!!!!! You’re Alive!!!!
yep and well too =)
I knew you were from Iowa somewhere, but are you in the Quad Cities? Super cool, to know exactly where you are talking about! I lived on the Illinois side of the Quad Cities my whole life
How about a sbc or sbf swap? Or a LS would make it really fun…
Oh yeah it would it would scoot then
Clamato is great in beer
you know now too with that bung in the side of the block being out the boat must have been winterised so you wont have the classic crack under the intake/exhaust
Reprime the pump ✅
Oh boy😂
prime the carb by the throttle little de tent button pull shift leaver lime. your gonna shift in foreword several primes foreword usually 10 crank but with it still out of gear bring the throttle back neutral click re de tent crack the throttle about inch or so don’t over rev. when she catches let her run a thousand rpms out of gear let her warm up or she’ll stall when the temp climbs off of cold return to neutral let idle with bilge blower while putting around ramps, docks, and five mph or less. it keeps gas fumes from forming. next check trim sometimes just low on oil sometimes the solenoid goes or the throttle switch. our cobalt had a trailer setting so when approaching the trailer it put the outdrive in proper setting use second trim button if needed don’t want a prop strike or ruin a skeg. if greased oiled lubed everything lower unit oil change. easy remove bottom screw and breather to vent gear oil. we used a oil pan and trash bag doubled up. then after it’s has drained while the lower unit is tilted down almost touching but plenty of work room. you’ll need to re fill with mercruiser lower unit gear oil they make an adapter pump from quart bottle. that attaches pump hose and fitting to bottom screw hole. pump until oil oozes from top vent hole. add extra so no bubbles are visible if none wipe up excess over flow, put screw in tighten put said index finger lower unit screw attach quick tighten. check lower gear case for discoloration of oil lower seals are gone water into case. replace seals. next engine easy put oil pump over dip stick suck out oil remove set oil aside next pull oil filters and water separator replace both refill with oil until dip stick reads full mark dip pull re check don’t over fill. out drive hydraulic arms require lube and check the rubber washer is between the ends of arms replace as needed go up and down twice to see it working not making funny noises. we used a 2x8 block of wood to prop up drive for rubber rings need two hand tighten when it tightened little grr torque easy. your running lights need to work gauges bow and stern white rear red/green front dash lights easy peezy i’d get new updated stuff led replace gauges that don’t read temp, etc. next trailer lights swap to led. but i’d also get mercury paint prime in one re spray out drive next look at your prop for dings n things light stuff can be re ground and sharpened look into stainless steel props stronger no flex. lube steering vacuum out boat polish 3-m oxidize remover etc get it polished back into it wax. next in your creeper look at the hull for damage polish windshield and get the teak done ✅ with thompson water sealer clear light sand add more than one coat of sealer let dry no sanding tires 🛞 polish rims check for dry rot and put uv protectant on tires check the air and get spare tire lube bearings jack up spin tire now they lube sealed bearings unless you wanna re do bearings and pack them ever so often. check bow strap condition replace if uv damaged bass pro shops. trailer jack and wheel storage winterize drain water from block open pet cocks leave them open and remove water hose wipe excess water after run drop lower unit drain excess water we did launch trim out drive down an inch prior to starting. remove drain plug remember have fun. spark plug change easy and the air filter rinse with carb cleaner or bit of gas let air dry keep shop towels handy. make sure remove battery in winter put on trickle charge periodically and terminals are seated all the way. and tight. positive red neg or ground black. neg first then red burn mid grade to prevent engine knock we burned premium all the time
Thanks for the comment that’s a lot of stuff lol all good suggestions tho 😁
Say hi to Carter for me.
Didn't know you had a boating license
Yep sure do had it since I was 14
Those 4 cyl.3.0 merc motors r bullet proof..they run 4ever n very economical too
It's a 140?
@@brettleewilliams it's 140hp n 3.0liters...1 of the oldest n best motors ever made..it uses the same Pistons as the famous Chevy 350 v8
good video as usual sir
So, we know you're a cop and rocking the mullet isn't great for duty, but you should consider wearing a mullet wig for the videos
#BringBackTheMullet
The mullet may be coming back 👀😏
He likes Cheladas and has a boat? I knew John was the homie.
Hahaha I just want to know if I would be invited to the cookout 😂😂
@@goldenrustorbust Oh hell yeah. But South Texas is kinda hot right now. Like 115. So no cookouts anytime soon
@@rikerthe3rd damn that’s hot 🥵
Why did you not change the oil before you took it out on the lake
Now I really want a boat too! How much did you pay for that beauty?
800
Why do you need to drain the gear case change the water pump out?
At 8:25 is the alternator not spinning when the belt turns or is that a camera issue?
yoo yeah of course that sea ray aint sunk its a sea ray ive heard stories from my dad of a guy telling him to hit it with a sledgehammer and he did it wouldent break suposibly sea ray makes solid boats especially old ones
I have the same boat but i don't know what size of battery i need
I don’t know either
cant you hear da knock?
I swear the birds in this video are talking to the birds outside my house.
Maybe their the same birds or government drones for spying 🤯😂
@@goldenrustorbust lmao
