    Please save that sled. They are becoming super rare. There is a cult following with these old John Deere’s

    The first liquid cooled sleds were called Brut. They were made in my home town of Brooten Minnesota in the early 70s. From what I hear from the old timers that had them they were the fastest thing around while they ran which usually wasn’t long. 👍

      Fun Fact: A guy in Paynesville bought out Brut snowmobiles and used a modified version of their liquid cooled engine to build jet skis called Wet Jets, which the design was then later sold to Mastercraft Boats...Ed Webb is his name, and he owns Koronis Parts, which still manufactures vintage snowmobile replacement parts...

    Most people swapped out those grouser bar tracks with a full rubber aftermarket ones early on. That one you found is amazingly un touched! So much of it is original and fairly nice. I know it was a free sled, but I sure would like to see you fix it up properly. Those things were made 30 mins from my house in Horicon, WI. Love the content, keep it up!

    • @OilHist
      @OilHist 2 роки тому

      If the belt sections of the track are ok, all you need are the grouser bars. I would think they would be available from somewhere. I always liked those steel bared tracks as they dig good.

    This is the content i like the most from you snowmobile revivals not many people do this stuff Kevin does mostly bigger stuff like cars trucks the small stuff is how we all start out on every one of us had a old sled or tractor go kart etc that always ran like crap but it ran it and it ran enough to have a ton of fun and when they broke we would fix them no matter how ugly the fix was we didn’t have the money or a daddy to bring it to a shop or fix it for us some of our dads helped us learn but mine made me do all the work but I learned alot from him and im super thankful it was like that

    I grew up in Horicon Wi when they were making these back in the day. Best friends dad work for John Deere in town (executive) and every fall they had 4 brand new snowmobiles delivered to their driveway for the to use for the winter. I was so jealous.

    I love that liquifire! I owned one many years ago, and what an excellent runner. Smooth, quite powerful for the time, but kinda heavy and not very nimble. The 78 was there one to have of the 3 years they made them with that engine. It had slightly better rear suspension and seat than the 76 and 77s. Also 78 was the only year with the small radiator in conjunction with heat exchangers.

    @MrATOMBOMB420 2 роки тому

    The way to fix those and I can tell you this knowledge from personal experience with one of those sleds what you need to do is get a late 80s Ski-Doo Safari and take the track and undercarriage from the Safari remove the track and under carriage from the John Deere because the John Deere has what's called internal drive which is those lugs on the inside of the track so all you have to do is remove the bolts that hold the internal drive for width wise put your track off your Safari in it cuz it has internal drive also get your width set right then drill new holes through the main drive put a new bolt through there and then all you have to do is drill the holes so that the Safari track and undercarriage is in there straight and then you'll never have to worry about it again I put five tracks on my 440 liquefier before I finally said enough is enough they are junk tracks there are three piece track held together by steel cleats but the sliders run directly on the steel cleats and after 20 30 years I mean it's only a matter of time before those metal bars wear through and I finally switched it over to a Ski-Doo Safari track and undercarriage and I drove the sled for 3-4 years after that sold it to a guy he drove it for 3 4 years and I would imagine it still driving today I know that's a lot to read but that is how you fix it

    340 undercarriage will swap in just make sure you take the best of both tracks. IE if you have spare cleats on the junk track that arent fubar save them and change out any you may have busted from the donor before you install. Come to think of it that 340 CDI would have been the same too.

    • @400brian
      @400brian 2 роки тому

      The 78 suspension was unique to 78. A 76 or 77 suspension will fit and work if the mounting holes in the sides of the tunnel are re-drilled and ALL the hardware brought over. The downside is that the earlier suspension is around 11 lbs heavier. You could replace the cleated track with an all rubber vintage one, but it is a fair amount of work. The 78 Cross Country race suspension is basically what you have to duplicate.
