honestly, if pentatonix hadn't been in this season, i think afro blue should have won. i really hope they're still making music because they are excellent and fabulous and all those other happy adjectives
Tanya Monts it was their previous performance that dragged them down - Urban Method were lucky enough to have two super performances this week of all weeks
The rumor is the producers pushed the judges to eliminate Afro-Blue here, since there was a record deal at stake and producers had their hearts set on Pentatonix. Afro-Blue was enough of a fan favorite that they may have been a threat to win a popular vote.
@@Kikikirah There's no question PTX would have won regardless. But producers didn't know that when they taped. Season 3 was pretaped except for the finale. A post circulated on Facebook in 2011 from people on the inside that said producers met with the judges late into the night this episode, and afterwards Ben Folds had to defend his decision online. The general theory is that Sony didn't want another Jazz/R&B group like Committed so they pushed the judges to eliminate them.
What was SO disturbing about AFRO BLUE and their BRILLIANCE is that the judges ADMIT that they GUIDED THEM WRONG! The told them to shift sounds and things that they didn't "mean" to tell them and then they did it and it messed up their offering and sound. THEY ARE JUST ASTOUNDING!!!!!! I am moved to TEARS yet again!!!! And just a point of reference that the group losing it over their performance at the end is PENTATONIX!!!!! They leveled up this show.
While this is totally true, it's also Afro Blue's fault a little for skewing the other way completely - when the judges just meant to simplify their arrangements not make it super simple and remove their jazz quality/style so it was no longer their track anymore. Although sometimes I suspect it was the producers whispering in AB's ears and that they were really doing them in and not the judges. Rumor is that Sony didn't want another R&B/jazz group similar to Committed, so producers might have tried to get in AB's heads on purpose as the competition progressed.
Even though it probably wouldn't have changed the final outcome of the season, I'm pretty sure if you have one of the greatest performances ever, you probably shouldn't be eliminated after...
ABSOLUTELY GREAT PERFORMANCE!!! Say what you want...but there was NO WAY they should have been sent packing after TWO powerhouse closing performances! Especially, losing to the Dartmouth Aires. BTW, much love to PTX. What other group unanimously both praised (4:49) and grieved for Afro Blue like they did? PTX knew AB was done wrong. Period.
The part at 3:56 when you see people in the background start to stand up is when you realize that this wasn't just a performance, it was something more
This was one of that season's best performances. I really miss this show, sucks that its last season was just a one night gig. A lot of amazing talent passed through the sing-off stage but oddly enough it seems hardly any of them managed to really capitalize. Afro Blue underwent changes and is now known as Traces Of Blue, Nota lost their lead singer, Committed lost a member as well as Home Free. I really hoped that the winners had done much better and that even semi-finalists and finalists would at least get a career going.
HavocWWC People have said these shows are about marketability and not so much talent. The groups you mentioned do not do mainstream music which, as we know, is what draws the masses. That's why they're not in the limelight.
The reason no other group on the show besides Pentatonix has ever made it big and joined the public consciousness with a lasting career is the same reason why literally no Voice winner is a household name and at least 5 Idol Winners or even top 10 contestants are and probably a dozen are still doing fairly well. Its not about talent and it's not even about marketability. It's about the music industry players they have running the show. The people behind the voice know how to make successful television not successful recording artists. Sing off doesn't even have that. I loved the show but they didn't have the power or influence or skill to turn it into something that would last for decades or launch groups into stardom.
Pentatonix broke away from the label not too long after. Because they were young and had a different sound and were always ahead, they used social media (you tube, insta) before it was what it was and saw what it was gonna do for them and they created their own career. It made it easier with five and they were all young and hungry and taking chances, no shade to the other groups. I just feel like pentatonix did it their way and with nothing. Their first Grammy win was recorded in their kitchen! I think they just did what they knew would help them.
@@artistpino Pentatonix did not get famous with the help of the show and label. They were literally dropped right after moving out to LA for the contract. They got exposure and connections and money from this, but if they did not work their behinds off right after this, they would have faded in to obscurity as most artists do after a show. They capitalized on their momentum and ran with it. Their buissness savvy along with their talents is what made them who they are.
It's because the Sing Off wasn't meant to make recording artists, it was meant to make television. PTX worked with what they had (and struggled) because the label dropped them thinking they weren't marketable but PTX worked hard and showed them what fools they were, didn't they though it did take them a few years to get there. But they really had to work hard and commit to staying together to make it work - and even when the lost Avi when he could no longer handle PTX's demanding schedule, they still are phenomenal with Matt, Avi's hand-picked replacement (who I think he - Matt- was on Season 4 too).
Zach The Passionate Aspie I feel you. My favorite versions in order are: 1. Sam Cooke 2. Luther Vandross 3. Afro Blue 4. The Manhattans 5. Gerald Alston 6. Brian Owens/Michael McDonald/David Sanborn 7. Detrick Haddon

AFRO BLUE! This was so awesome! All the judges were standing up and Sarah was jumping up and down. I have watched this nearly EVERYDAY since it was posted. Go Blue!
Pentatonix is good and all, but they are not comparable to Afro Blue and Committed, they were the two most talented groups to cross the Sing Off stage!!! Oh yeah, Home Free was damn good too!!! I'm done!!!

This is a flawless performance, except for one thing: I wanted the "change is gonna come" to keep going about 20 more times, I get chills the whole time!
Kevin and Avi look like they're about to just leap onto the stage to celebrate what an amazing performance that was by Afro Blue. And I don't blame them, because, right now, I feel like leaping through my laptop screen to do just that. Incredible.
EXACTLY: They should have done more, on the network, to display the LEVEL OF TALENT on the show (cross promotion on other shows, put them in NBC commercials....they could have smashed AI)...THE VOICE and THE SING-OFF are a great combination and don't fight each other!
an out of world experience.Amazing. Even though they are so amazing i understand why they didnt win......the point of the show is to find a group that can make records. and the genre and style of music afro blue has would not go very far.
Their best two songs of their whole time on Sing Off, maybe even the best performances on the entire show! That was sung so beautifully! How can you take off a group after that? UM can't even keep pitch, it amazes me how they got on Sing Off in the first place! It should've been AB, DA, and PX in the finale. Choosing between DA and AB is tough. But I feel like AB could've won if they made it to the fan vote. That gave me chills and tears. They're going places!
The judges legit GIFTED this performance (and UM and DA's theirs) to try and propel them. I think they were pressured into letting certain groups go and keeping others and their choices were their way of trying to level the field, though it didn't work completely since PTX had the most complicated song given to them and they nailed it perfectly.
How they didn't go to the finale after that is beyond me, and all of us. Forget reflecting on the whole season to see who moves on, that performance won them the show.
Best performance they did, yet this was the performance that got them eliminated. I believe that was a terrible mistake. I honestly believe that afro blue should have won this competition. No disrespect to pentationix because they are nothing short of excellent at what they do, but afro blue just has a fuller sound and better technique in my opinion. There is just so much more they can do with their sound. Sure, Pentatonix fits the label better in terms of potential for mainstream appeal, but honestly, who isn't tired of the mainstream genre of music today. Just because you're not mainstream doesn't mean you don't make good music, and afro blue makes great music. If Pentatonix is that much more versatile than afro blue, then they wouldn't so easily fit into a specific music genre. The fact is everyone has a niche, and they shouldn't have to suffer for it. With that, I want to be absolutely clear that I completely respect and admire Pentatonix's work, so if anybody has any hate comments infused by their loyalty to the group, save it. I appreciate music no matter where it's coming from. Good music is good music, no matter who the artist is. Still, I know that as long as anyone on earth has an opinion on anything, there will always be another to oppose it, so if you feel you must express your opposition to my stance, I assure you I can take it. All I ask is that you speak freely and respectfully.
+Jason Alce They *killed* this, so mostly agree. Recordable. Remember though - the competition had other genres (country, heavy metal, guilty pleasures, mish/mash, hip hop, etc). That is to force every group to cover every possible arrangement. Whenever Afro Blue had jazz/blues/R&B, they were awesome, but they struggled some with the other genres. Think they should have made top three for sure (adios Dartmouth). Have seen all videos. My ranking: (1) Pentatonix - they covered all genres with only 5 people (and have gone on to great things); (2) Afro-blue - best all over singers and this one was awesome ; (3) Urban Method - they had multiple good singers and an excellent rapper/hip-hop guy; (4) Dartmouth - their lead singer Michael was awesome, 2-3 solid singers, and they put on a great live fun show (but this is for a recording contract, so who cares - nice for TV, not so great for a recording studio); (5) Vocal Point - might have gone to 3 if they had let Jake lead all songs; nice to let other leads kick in but need to go with your hot hitter. Anyway, this was a gorgeous first take and they are now called Trace of Blue. OK - bye.
+Gregory Martin I like and respect your reasoning. I guess I just like the fact that Afro Blue (Traces of Blue) has a fuller sound than PTX, and I don't necessarily agree that Afro Blue couldn't do justice to other genres. I feel that Afro Blue has better harmonization and more advanced vocal technique and their arrangements were more detailed, and that's what set them apart. I just really want to see them do well, and right now I don't think they are nearly as famous/popular as they deserve to be. I have to agree with Sara's comment that the judges weren't very helpful for the most part and often times were confusing with their feedback in regards to Afro Blue. I DEFINITELY agree that they should have made the top 3, AT LEAST. The fact is, this show did them dirty.
Jason Alce With you on that. They should have been in the final two (but check 'Little Drummer Boy' by Pentatonix on youtube to see what they can do). Really think any soul/jazz/R&B station or Pandora channel would love what Afro Blue (now Trace of Blue) can do....hope they get recorded. Also, although it is a sing off it was also TV. Groups like Dartmouth got major passes on singing for heavy dancing/choreography. Not right though - this was supposed to be who can do a recording contract, not who can put on the best stage show. SIGH Done now. At least the show gave them exposure and hope they can capitalize. Stay cool.
+Gregory Martin Thanks for your insight Greg! I hope I didn't come off too "anti-PTX", lol! I was just really frustrated with the outcome of the show regarding Afro Blue when I first commented on the video. I actually really like PTX and very much appreciated their many arrangements. A group I was in actually ended up learning their arrangement of Mary Did You Know cause we liked it so much! Much respect for PTX. I'm sure Traces of Blue will find, and have already found success.
@@TheRandomDoorknob You're right. With all due respect to Pentatonix which was my alternate group I wanted to win if Afro Blue didn't, but with that said, Pentatonix was set up to win b/c the producers from Sony coveted them and wanted them to win so they could sign them. And based off the reactions from Pentatonix after they sent Afro Blue packing, I believe they knew it too. I remember the media telling NBC and Sony producers that Afro Blue seems to be the best group and do you think they could win it all? Their response, yeah but we don't want the same type of groups winning every year. Then I thought about what he said and was able to read between the lines with that comment. An Hispanic group won season 1 and a Black group won season 2 so if Afro Blue was to win it, that would have been 3 minority groups of 1 Hispanic and 2 Blacks, and there was no way in hell they were going to allow Afro Blue to win. That's why they sent them home in that round b/c they knew that Afro Blue was Pentatonix's only true competition and that was the last round the judges could vote. In the final round, it's out of the judges hands and America gets to vote. They feared that given the chance, America would've voted for Afro Blue instead and that was a chance they weren't willing to take. What other reason would they send a group home that not only had the best performance of the night, but end up being their best performance of the entire season and was still sent home. Afro Blue definitely got robbed, and the crazy part was, they were a good sport about it and left the stage with Grace and a humble attitude, knowing it was some BS going on behind the scenes to sabotage their run. Everybody including Pentatonix were suprised and discussted to see them go home after having a Perfect performance and still didn't make the cut. Till this day, one of the biggest and craziest WTF moments on Live tv I've ever experienced in my entire life. This was absolutely blasphemous. Ben couldn't even look Afro Blue in the eyes when he sent them home b/c he knew he was wrong. But you reap what you sow. After all of that cheating and conniving Sony and NBC did to make sure Pentatonix won, they never got a chance to sign them. Apparently, Pentatonix was so upset about the way they did Afro Blue, they rejected Sony's contract and signed somewhere else, and The Sing Off was cancelled. God don't like ugly. NBC and Sony deserved everything they got for what they did to Afro Blue.
that was amazing! i love love love this group i was keeping up on you tube when i could I hate that they got voted off something to be said about the powers that be.... hmmmmm
This was great! I was sorry to see them go - I hoped the top three would have included them. I noticed that Ben stood up for that performance, which does not seem to happen too often. Anyway, I really enjoyed Afro-Blue on the show and wish them much success in the future because they are true talent!
i literally get goosebumps every time i listen to this. afro-blue didn't get to showcase how brilliant they are during the show due to being confused by the input from the judges but this song embodies their talent. it doesn't focus on their jazzy style (american-boy did that best I think) but it does show their growth during the show and their ability as a group. much love to afro-blue! HU! U KNOW!
Honestly this and Landslide are my two favourite sing off songs. They're so emotionally driven and are truely beautiful in every way possible. I prefer this only because the vocals are a little better than in landslide. A little
Even after purposely misguiding them, the group still killed it. They were the definition of Pitch Perfect. They were literally perfect. The judges biggest complaint was that they were too perfect and lost some people. I wasn’t lost. I have never known of a thing.
In my honest opinion Afro Blue was far better than Penatonix,It was a marketing move and it successfully worked no other winner has had the success Penatonix has.I still believe Afro Blue was vocally superior.
2023 and I still listen to this performance constantly
They WENT HOME after this? WHAT!?
Paint hi paint
Them and YJ should have been top 3 in my book
The top 3 should be either of these 4
Afro Blue
Pentatonix
Delilah
Vocal Point
Aight yeah I agree now
Oh and Cat’s Pajamas. Brutally robbed.
This is one of the GREATEST performances in this show's history, and I have watched this show from it's inception
And the fact that this is the song that they were ELIMINATED on just show's the real objective of this show
I stopped watching the show after this LOL
they should have been in the finale over Urban Method. Couldn't stand them and their thin voiced/whiny sounding girls.
Scotty B Couldn't agree more. They had some rocky songs, but this one was amazing!
I'll take the girls over Mike's terrible rapping every song

they are, under the name Traces of Blue
Yep. Traces of Blue.
felixvelariusbos not really I think because they have been in the 2 2 times that’s why and they wanted it to be an easy decision
I really thought this performance would have AT LEAST taken them to the finale. I was extremely disappointed in the judges decision.

Jason Alce
With you on that.
SIGH
Done now.
Afro Blue was one oof the best one that show. They show have won also.
that was amazing! i love love love this group i was keeping up on you tube when i could I hate that they got voted off something to be said about the powers that be.... hmmmmm
AFRoOOo BLUE thats the end of the show there isnt anything better to come, the judges on the left are off their minds. sad they went home.
HU! U KNOW!
They took it straight to church at the end!
EVERY SONG DOES NEED A JAZZ CHORD, DUDE
Class to the max!
I'm the director at my church and this arrangement made me want to get up and direct my choir lol. They took it to church and they nailed it
Bluuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuue!
They were the best
In my honest opinion Afro Blue was far better than Penatonix,It was a marketing move and it successfully worked no other winner has had the success Penatonix has.I still believe Afro Blue was vocally superior.
I would love for you to purchase this book called "State of Emergency"
I love pentatonix reaction!!!!
I think that Afro Blue is an amazing group.
The right group won, But!!! This group was soooooo amazing!!!!
best performance on the show EVER
ahhhh 3:21 ....seriously seriouslyyyy! Afro Blue just ahhh! Musicians tapping into the neo soul age will know exactlyyy what i'm talking about!
