watching this 5 years later and I get so many goosebumps from that rap. She sang that last part of the rap like she knew it was go big or go home. One of my all time favorite groups
It's most be God shining through you when you sing. I understand you are now singing with a new name "Traces of Blue." Please, please keep singing these inspirational songs. We need you to make a full album available!
One of their best. Technically speaking, as a trained musician, concept and arrangement issues aside ONLY Pentatonix matched or surpassed ABs creativity and musicality. That's undisputable whether or not the soloist was to everyone's taste. DA was fun to watch but as a listener only were not on par and UM should have left way early on. Excited to hear more from them all and see who really has what it takes to chart. Especially PENTATONIX!
Trent Cokley is the younger brother to my elementary school best friend Tim. I heard this little dude sing when he finally made it to high school. I would be lying if I said we keep in touch...I was a military brat. But I am glad to see dude really followed his dream. I wish they had won. But the crazy part is...I would have never known he was on this show if I wasn't following the group Pentatonix.
Oh thanks for the videos by the way!!! They are great! But I do disagree with your description. They have always goodperformances, it's only when the judges dummbed them down and took away their spark is when their performances became not as great as before. But They never really had any real bad performances. Mariah's part was really amazing too.
@MrPantlesswonder Thank you! The judges were always complaining that Dartmouth Aires had pitch issues and never once used it against them. Afro- blue always kept their pitch.
This show absolutely SPANKS Glee, American idol, ABDC, The Voice YOU NAME IT. I have yet to witness anything up to the Sing-off's and I just wish It wasn't cut short after only 3 seasons.
I agree wholeheartedly, I was crushed when this show was cancelled...but it's coming back! They announced audition dates/cities, so season four is, in fact, a soon-to-be-realized actuality!
WTF! They were in the bottom because the stupid Judges couldn't make up their damn minds about what they wanted to see from afro blue. they tell them to feel the music and go with the flow and the next performance they say not to bring it down and raise it. WTF! You tell them to downgrade themselves to sound better. and then you tell them to go back and be themselves after you told them to not be themselves
Actually their song was really put together. Love the harmonies. Complexity is their thing. Was pissed off when they went home. This and their second song was amazing. Love Afro blue.
People are forgetting one major point in comparing the Glee and Afro-Blue versions of this mash-up. Afro Blue arranged it themselves and it's only voices. No other instruments accompanying in the background, no autotune. The glee version is very good, but there really isn't a comparison in my eyes. AfroBlue was amazing.
im only 17 & i know this. its first grade..a lot of the harmonies they use are so intricate that you have to be pitch perfect to even pull them off. the one wrong note can turn it all off & they may trip up sometimes but so has every other group on the show. & as usual all the leads were wonderful..the arrangement was fun & id give it an A- ....BECAUSE IT GOT A LITTLE PITCHY ON THE RAP.
Word. He is tripping. I always go back to this video all the time and live for that moment of the song. If anything it was the climax, does not take away any emotional build whatsoever. People who don't understand the power of rap will not appreciate the art to its entirely. She finessed that verse 👊✨✌️
Hunny, every so often i come back and watch this season because it was so good, and to this day i will SCREAM it shoulda been Afro Blue and Pentatonix in the finale. Urban Method just wasn't as thoroughly talented as AB. The judges kept gassing up that Katie chick in UM and her voice was like nails on a chalkboard. Man, I'm going off again.🤣🤣🤣🤣👏
Not really,i love Afro Blue but i'm too a Glee fan. Both versions are amazing in totally diffrent ways. But the fact with the live perfomence is that every one of the actors of Glee has a extremly good voice live. They aren't just actors, they are singers too. They are amazing live performers and a lot of the actors even winn awards for they voices (like Chris Colfer) and others are on Solo Tour (like Darren Criss or Matthew Morrison). But the most inportant fact is that Afro Blues Mash-up is amazing!
Blue afro is doing this live, Glee has all the sound made by mastered stuff.. I mean this is real! Glee just managed the sound with machines, I don't think they could do this live....
It just says that they don't have mainstream appeal. All of the groups were there in the first place because they ALL 'measured up' to a standard that was really very high in the first place. 4 times in the bottom before being eliminated shows everyone that the judges saw something in them that set them apart. Something really special.
@cmac200409 I think your right. The cards were stacked against them because of last years winners Committed, who also had a very unique gospel, jazz sound. They still should have been part of the last two or three standing. I felt like the judges didn't quite know how to give them constructive critisism, because as Ben Folds said "you were singing over our heads" That's what happens when you encounter musical excellence.
i don't know why a lot of people don't like it. but i think it was very very very beautiful. :) i also like the rap. HAHA i'm just sad they were sent home. huhu
Omg, this was so amazing lol. People said they weren't versatile, but watching all of their performances I have to say those people are either deaf, blind, or dumb.
@MrPantlesswonder ditto on the contradicting critique. (ugh!) But I pray they stay together; they could really go places. Shawn, please holla at your peeps!
Kind of ,some DJ in LA decided to do a mix of these two songs on the radio and he dedicated it to Afro Blue. Ryan Murphy claims he got it from the DJ but I doubt it
Glee the actors are like in their 30 play teens and on the sing off the contestants are like 14 to like 50. So what if people are gay singing helps though tough times
Actually they already had a huge following in the DC area before the show, so I think it would be ignorant to say that the group is done simply because they've been eliminated. Not to mention that Afro Blue continues in the form of a class at Howard and continues to get high profile gigs, i.e. opening act for the Manhattan Transfer at the Kennedy Center.
Who cares what Glee did Glee has months to prepare and they don't even have a week glee has multiple times to get it right an they only have one so what so u expect
No one seems to recall Glee takes quirky stuff and puts it on the show. Remember Heavy Impact from ABDC was on Glee dancing? Safety Dance? The Barbra Streisand techno song? If you're a gleek you woulda noticed the trends.
To make these 2 songs toork together is a difficult task. Ben said they used the harmonies to blend them seemlessly and they did. I personally don't think GLEE did a better job, they aren't half the musicians these guys are. These people are pure music, not a commercial spin fed show (which, by the way, I happen to like.)
Me being heavy on accapella i can say that if you are judging the group based off of ability & not how much you like the group itself then anyone reasonable would agree that afro blue was the most advanced & musically inclined group to be on this show...anyone can listen to a song & say i love the way it sounds, but as far as the elements & dynamics of the songs & arrangements let me say NOBODY has out done them.
I'm hoping Pentatonix is the winner. I've watched all of their performances they are flawless in style, approach, and pitch. I just think Afro Blue should have been in the top two or three. I would listen to them in my ipod. I hope thier story turns out to be like Jennifer Hudson, where she got voted off that show and ended up with an oscar and grammy. Sometimes these judges are just wrong. I loved Delilah as well. I can only see Dartmouth Aires on Broadway.
OKAY GLEE DID NOT RECORD THIS IN AUGUST. IF YOU HAVEN'T NOTICE, GLEE TAPE THEIR SHOES 1 TO 2 WEEKS AHEAD. FOR EXAMPLE, WHEN AMBER SONG WHITNEY HOUSTON, IT WAS RECORDED A WEEK BEFORE WHITNEY DIED. AND NO DOUBT THIS GROUP DID AN AWESOME AND BETTER JOB, LETS NOT FORGET THEONLY INSTRUMENTS THEY USE IS THEIR VOICE.
Just the fact that Glee used instruments, auto-tune and other sfx makes AFRO BLUE 1MILLION TIMES BETTER! OK? AND THE ARRANGEMENT? To those who are saying that their harmonies are off.... they are called JAZZ harmonies idiots!
Lol the only white girl in the group was my music teacher till she left to go on the sing off miss you ms.burkon!
I don't know what u talking bout but that rap was on point, one of their best performances
watching this 5 years later and I get so many goosebumps from that rap. She sang that last part of the rap like she knew it was go big or go home. One of my all time favorite groups
Glee's is so edited, this is real... Also the fuck you mean by mess? That was smooth as hell.
It's most be God shining through you when you sing. I understand you are now singing with a new name "Traces of Blue." Please, please keep singing these inspirational songs. We need you to make a full album available!
this song is so emotionally charged, when mariah finishes her rap it brings tears to my eyes.
This was so perfect! The rap part flowed really nice with it to... One of the best performances on the show
this was one ofvtheir best performances very heartfelt
FANTASTIC!
Mariah! That was awesome girl! You go!
A harmonious breath of fresh air! Loved it!
I was upset too! I'm so glad to hear they are coming back. I love this show.
sends chills down my spine
One of their best. Technically speaking, as a trained musician, concept and arrangement issues aside ONLY Pentatonix matched or surpassed ABs creativity and musicality. That's undisputable whether or not the soloist was to everyone's taste. DA was fun to watch but as a listener only were not on par and UM should have left way early on. Excited to hear more from them all and see who really has what it takes to chart. Especially PENTATONIX!
The chord they make at 2:40 gives me life
THIS WAS CUT!?!?!?!
Motivation for school- gone.
Future aspirations- shattered
Faith in humanity- SO DONE.
No matter how many times I listen to this I still get goose bumps..
AMAZING AMAZING AMAZING !!!! WE WILL HEAR FROM THEM AGAIN IM SURE OF IT !!! INCREDIBLE
So beautiful! Mariah's rap was perfect!
Wow mariah murdered that rap!!!! Good lawd
Glee did their version 4 months after this aired.
Glee version better than this 😂
this performance still gives me chills!
Might be my favorite performance. Right on target in a way that surprises us as much as it makes us feel right at home...
Oh thanks for the videos by the way!!! They are great! But I do disagree with your description. They have always goodperformances, it's only when the judges dummbed them down and took away their spark is when their performances became not as great as before. But They never really had any real bad performances. Mariah's part was really amazing too.
im not too big on rap but i like how she did it
Best mash-up of the episode hands down.
3:28 chills
This was good. I had my mouth wide open thru the playing of the whole song..
Still one of my all time favorite performances
@MrPantlesswonder Thank you! The judges were always complaining that Dartmouth Aires had pitch issues and never once used it against them. Afro- blue always kept their pitch.
The rap part was just awesome!
They are classy as hell. Damn.
This show absolutely SPANKS Glee, American idol, ABDC, The Voice YOU NAME IT. I have yet to witness anything up to the Sing-off's and I just wish It wasn't cut short after only 3 seasons.
Glee. There is a short list of things you are not supposed to touch because they are too epic for you to do them justice. Afro Blue is on this list.
I agree wholeheartedly, I was crushed when this show was cancelled...but it's coming back! They announced audition dates/cities, so season four is, in fact, a soon-to-be-realized actuality!
This was so smooth! LOVE IT!!!
every time they sing, i feel like im at church!
They are so good so genuine they put so much heart into what they do you can literally feel it everytime you hear them!!
OH MY GOSH, MARIAH WAS AMAZING!
Actually their song was really put together. Love the harmonies. Complexity is their thing. Was pissed off when they went home. This and their second song was amazing. Love Afro blue.
Oh my... This was so awesome! Holy cow...
my cousin (christie) just killed it and that rap part was beautiful the whole song was BEAUTIFUL...AMAZING
Interesting how Glee chose to do a cover of the same exact songs!
the hell yall talkin bout? this is beautiful
@fsinghy actually a lot of the season 3 songs of glee were already sung by groups of the sing off. in the exact same version/arrangement
im only 17 & i know this. its first grade..a lot of the harmonies they use are so intricate that you have to be pitch perfect to even pull them off. the one wrong note can turn it all off & they may trip up sometimes but so has every other group on the show. & as usual all the leads were wonderful..the arrangement was fun & id give it an A- ....BECAUSE IT GOT A LITTLE PITCHY ON THE RAP.
The rap was amazing ! The uploader probably doesn't know rap/hip-hop music that well..
Word. He is tripping. I always go back to this video all the time and live for that moment of the song. If anything it was the climax, does not take away any emotional build whatsoever. People who don't understand the power of rap will not appreciate the art to its entirely. She finessed that verse 👊✨✌️
Right? I thought Mariah did amazing and the way she ended that rap is giving me chills and I didn't even get to that part yet.
I loved the rap-sing part!!!
Agreed!
I loved Trents vocal for this one
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
This was SO SO SO SO SO SO SO good. I can't believe they left before urban method. PRESSED.
Man, I'm going off again.🤣🤣🤣🤣👏
does anyone knw where i can get sheet music for this
Not really,i love Afro Blue but i'm too a Glee fan. But the most inportant fact is that Afro Blues Mash-up is amazing!
i got goosebumps 10 seconds into this.
they are good @ singing!
Her rap was one of my favorite parts actually. I don't think it hurt them at all.
Wow....Mariah Mariah Mariah....that note had me on my feet. WOW!
Blue afro is doing this live, Glee has all the sound made by mastered stuff.. I mean this is real! Glee just managed the sound with machines, I don't think they could do this live....
Ok, so I almost passed out at 3:45. These kids just tried to get into my soul.. Sweeeew!
It just says that they don't have mainstream appeal. All of the groups were there in the first place because they ALL 'measured up' to a standard that was really very high in the first place. 4 times in the bottom before being eliminated shows everyone that the judges saw something in them that set them apart. Something really special.
so did afro blue or glee came out with this mash up combination first?
why is everyone dissing on her rap! that was a really good rap , i want to see some of you guys rap like that!
@cmac200409
I think your right. The cards were stacked against them because of last years winners Committed, who also had a very unique gospel, jazz sound. I'm obsessed with the way she rapped that.
Christie has got to have the most gorgeous smile I have ever seen in my life. Honestly.
this
I can't believe this I'm so upset, this was by far their best performance and they got sent home!!!
i don't know why a lot of people don't like it.
but i think it was very very very beautiful. :)
i also like the rap. HAHA
i'm just sad they were sent home. huhu
If Nicki Minaj rapped the way she did, with that kind of passion, I'd buy her shit.
Omg, this was so amazing lol. People said they weren't versatile, but watching all of their performances I have to say those people are either deaf, blind, or dumb.
I love Trent's voice:-)...
its coming back
@MrPantlesswonder ditto on the contradicting critique. (ugh!) But I pray they stay together; they could really go places. Shawn, please holla at your peeps!
OMG mariah maxwell just BelRap that song! (Belt while Rap)
Kind of ,some DJ in LA decided to do a mix of these two songs on the radio and he dedicated it to Afro Blue. Ryan Murphy claims he got it from the DJ but I doubt it
The girl with the short hair that is white was my old music teacher
Keep in mind, this was done before a live audience.
Who did it first ? Them or Glee ?
They did. Glee always copies other people's arrangements.
blognewb lol ok ok
Glee the actors are like in their 30 play teens and on the sing off the contestants are like 14 to like 50. So what if people are gay singing helps though tough times
I liked the rap honestly she said she couldn't rap but it sounded pretty darn good to me!
@gleeshow2 when you preface your statement with "not to sound racists [sic] but" it almost always is racist.
Actually they already had a huge following in the DC area before the show, so I think it would be ignorant to say that the group is done simply because they've been eliminated. Not to mention that Afro Blue continues in the form of a class at Howard and continues to get high profile gigs, i.e. opening act for the Manhattan Transfer at the Kennedy Center.

mariah really got into the rap she killed it
OKAY GLEE DID NOT RECORD THIS IN AUGUST. IF YOU HAVEN'T NOTICE, GLEE TAPE THEIR SHOES 1 TO 2 WEEKS AHEAD. FOR EXAMPLE, WHEN AMBER SONG WHITNEY HOUSTON, IT WAS RECORDED A WEEK BEFORE WHITNEY DIED. The rap part does kill, don't you think?
@fsinghy So true. I was so mad Glee covered this.
glee recorded this before afro blue did :)
well rapping!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
By the way they were talking the judges already decicded that they would leave.
