One of Bono's greatest vocal performances. Beautiful.
Yeah - hundreds over hundreds stated that already on the original video place here on YT
Theme from “Harry Game” It’s brilliant.
And as an extra, try to hear the 45 played at 33rpm… eerie as hell!
@@robertgrace6182 Good God! That IS a scary thought! I haven't got a record player so can only imagine... 😁
"Caislean Òir" ;)
Bono was given the lyrics just before recording. He did it in one take and ad libbed most of it. Maire Brennan said in an interview that it was the most amazing thing she’d ever seen.
Man that was too short. - but so glad you listened to this one!!! I had this on a random tape from the 80s off the radio - from an underground radio show I used to listen to. Without that show I'd never have heard this song back then. Just gorgeous. I've been going back to some old U2 lately. You'd probably LOVE two songs of their Wide Awake in America EP (1985) "Love Comes Tumbling" - and "The Three Sunrises." Love Comes Tumbling is my fav though - used to listen to it on a loop. It has a similar ethereal quality. PLEASE do listen to Unforgettable Fire - or any songs of Joshua Tree other than the three big hits everyone has heard. "Love Comes Tumbling" though.. seriously!
"Caislean Óir" from Macalla is a great song too. Please check it out ! "Legend" is certainly an album worth of checking out as well. It won BAFTA, as it was a soundtrack for TV- series "Robin Of Sherwood" starring Michael Praed. I think "Magical Ring", "Legend" and "Macalla" summarise the band at its peak rather well. The first one is probably the most folkish of them, partly sung in Gaelic / Irish language. "Theme From Harry's Game" is on "Magical Ring" and it brought the band to international spotlight.
Enya is the sister of Máire/Moya, and likewise niece of the twin brothers Noel and Padraig (Patrick) Duggan(Na Dúgáin) Highly recommend Theme from Harry’s Game, which was their breakthrough track and the moment they moved from a very traditional Irish style to a more contemporary New Age Folk/Pop style.
Love that tune. Also played in the beginning of the Under a Blood Red Sky concert at Red Rocks. Definitely need some more U2 on this channel. I think he’d really enjoy Unforgettable Fire.
I know you tend to go by album, and pardon my atrocious Gaelic spelling but Coinleach Glas An Fromhair. I think it's from the magical ring album. And it is possibly the most hauntingly beautiful track I've ever heard. Just soul enriching. You will not regret listening to it.
A fave tune for me too.... As is 'Almost seems too Late to Turn."
I wanted to mention that song. When I heard it as a lad I never realized a song could cut so deep, still to this day. Coinleach Glás an Fhomair. That is the song to review!
In some TV-docu it was referred that Bono had influence on the lyrics of that song. So it was him who made out of Ciáran Brennan´s first rendition "First the thunder, then the storm" instead "Torn asunder in the storm"!
I love both Macalla and Sirius albums. This track although quite short gives me goosebumps every time.
Evening Justin. Dave from London at dusk (Night Meets Light). You're right - Enya was in Clannad and is Maire Brennan's sister. I also have a Best Of, but my favourite album is the earlier Magical Ring, which is more traditional Irish folk, with their trademark ethereal harmonies, and contains their biggest UK hit Theme from Harry's Game (TV series about the Troubles in Northern Ireland). In A Lifetime showcases how their sound was evolving, and Bono duets with Maire so well.
P.S. my song ref Night Meets Light is by Dixie Dregs.
Sorry, I can't resist: "Night Meets Light" . One of my favorite Dixie Dregs songs, from 'What If'. And yes: love "Theme to Harry's Game"
@@schuylersouthwell2554 I'm a big Dregs fan too (all my song refs come from albums in my collection)
Back in the day, this was filed under New Age or Folk/Pop or Chill, depending on the store.
Justin, have you heard Kitaro or Deuter? New age and worth a listen. Enjoy and thanks for all of the reacrtions
Thanks for the shout out JP ,love this track clannad have contributed many songs to movies and TV shows over the years , including ...I will find you
from the movie- the last of the Mohicans , Harry's game , and robin the hooded man , enya also had the song - may it be on the lord of the rings movie .please do HARRY'S GAME ( sung in the Irish language) next this song broke the band on the international scene very it was seen as something very different for its time . robin the hooded man has beautiful harmonies including keyboards and harp also considered very different big breakthrough songs for the band both clock in at under three minutes .great channel JP 👍
One of the most underrated duets of all time
A brilliant vocal performance by Bono on this song. You should definitely take a listen next to the beautifully haunting," Theme From Harry's Game" which is the song that really made their name. I would also recommend from the, "Past Present" album, "Newgrange".
I would also like to give another mention to the band Modern Studies who remind me a little of Clannad.
"Airy but powerful" describes this album very well. They began as acoustic Irish folk with dreamy vocal harmonies, harp, flute and double bass They became more New Age as they progressed, adding light rock and synth elements from around this album onwards.
There was a video for this song.....which got some airplay somewhere that I could discover the song......way before social media simplified everything. I bought the album and liked the songs Caisleán Óir and Blackstairs also. Their big hit is called "Theme from Harry's Game" from 1983. This was before Bono 'learned how to sing' after Joshua Tree was released. He rarely took such interesting vocal risks ever again.
The lead singer, Máire Brennan, is Enya's big sister - and her work with Clannad far outdates Enya's solo success, which overshadows that of Clannad. Clannad are luscious, and I think you would like their work - including their earlier work, which although closer to Celtic roots and often sung in Gaelic, was never strictly traditional - always uniquely stylized and innovative. I love Máire Brennan's solo work as much too, especially Misty Eyed Adventures and her self-titled Máire. For Clannad, my favorite still has to be their breakthrough album Magical Ring, but the rest of Macalla is great too. And yes, you should do The Unforgettable Fire, and The Joshua Tree (also produced by Eno, and Daniel Lanois) - they're both amazing albums, U2 at their zenith, in my estimation.
This was released in single. It's Bono, singing. It was the first Clannad song I heard, actually.
One of my favorite bands
Can take or leave (mostly leave) U2, but Bono is amazing on this.
Before the vocal came in I thought I remembered a U2 connection.
Mary Brennan of Clannad is the sister of Enya
Enya herself was in Clannad for a couple of years at the very beginning of the eighties too. She’d left the band quite a few years before this track was released.
Great band overall. Their early albums were 100% traditional acoustic songs from the Gaeltacht region of NW Ireland. With subsequent albums they became poppier and poppier. IMHO, they were best halfway between the two genres. And, I would say that the Magical Ring album is in that sweet spot. You should try reacting to that album. It starts with the Theme from Harry’s Game, which will be a winner with most listeners.
Ethereal, dreamy, beautiful track. Maire is the Irish spelling of the name Moya or Moira.
It is all about Bono. For me.
The trouble with many Celtic acts is their blandness. Not so here. It is already a powerful composition and production, and then you add in the voice of Bono Vox!
Enya and Máire are sisters.
Listen to harrys game by clannad
The only thing wrong with this song us it's too short.
Moy rah
I'm afraid this one just somehow manages to rub me up almost completely the wrong way, in spite of all the stars in the cast. In fact I think it was Bono who properly spoiled it all (it started pretty enough.) Thank Vishnu's aunty that we don't all always agree on everything (otherwise how would we manage to have fights and wars and all those nice things?)
Máire Ní Bhraonáin ( also know as Moya Brennan ) is the lead singer form a very famous musical family from Co Donegal in Ireland, who are part of Clannad. Many of their songs are ( as Gaeilge ), in the Irish langauge. She is of course Enya's sister. This is a wonderfully atmospheric emotive song featuring of course Bono. A good choice to react to.
One of my favourite bands of all time.
I've actually got a ticket to see them in their much delayed Farewell tour, when it comes to Toronto in September.
The complete Macalla album and especially 'Always seems to late to turn' are just magic !
Middle - Of -The - Road mulch.
I fell in love with Maire Brennan's voice when I was a teenager, when Clannad's record The Magical Ring came out. Later she changed her name to Moya Brennan on record releases. She and Enya are sisters and Enya was part of the band in the early days. Many many years ago I have seen Clannad in a Berlin church and I had the chance to talk to Maire. She is just wonderful. On that evening in this church I told her how I fell in love with her voice as a teenager. I will never forget her reaction, which I will just keep by myself on here. Maire plays harp and is the lead female voice of Clannad. Clannad was founded by the Brennan family, so the members are all related to one another. It would be fantastic if you'd listen to The Magical Ring, too.
I'm with you on Magical Ring, Thomas.
It's not really a change of name but a change of spelling for the benefit of non Irish speakers. 'Moya' is how her Irish name is pronounced. Her sister Eithne did the same by changing to 'Enya'.
I saw Moya in Eindhoven in the Netherlands. Nice kind artist
That my friend is ethereal Irish jazz.
also called magic
Clannad are at their best in Gaelic, of which I know maybe two words but that doesn’t stop it sounding beautiful.
Great, underrated band. This is slightly more rock / jazz influenced than their usual slightly more folky fare. They have always used synths though, with quite a modern take on production and fantastic vocals throughout the band - especially Maire. Worth checking out Theme from Harry's Game and anything from the Robin of Sherwood soundtrack, which I have loved since I first saw the show back in the 80s.
Other than the widely recommended "Theme from the Harry's Game", I'm sure you'll enjoy "I will find you" from The Last of the Mohicans soundtrack.
And for a full album treatment, "Legend" including a beautiful selection of songs from the "Robin of Sherwood" TV series, which even today in 2023 is the pinnacle of how magical a fantasy series soundtrack can be done.
One of my favourite songs that always finishes far too quickly. Gorgeous song, great reaction and definitely more to explore with Clannad.
The most hauntingly beautiful song I have ever heard in my lifetime.
Very happy that you dive into the world of Clannad. The Macalla and Sirius albums are the ones that introduced me to the band. It wasn't until I saw them perform live at the Montreal Spectrum that I discovered the breadth of their repertoires and all the genres they were experimenting with! It was a revelation :)
Those two albums are frecking fantastic! I'll definitely pull them out for a listen tonight. 🎶
Maire Brennan. Check out Harry’s Game.
Thanks for the shout out, JP! I knew you'd like this one!
The singer is Enya's sister, and in the band, I think there are at least a brother and an uncle... A very talented family, indeed! I believe Enya started with them and then went solo, but I wouldn't quote me on it... it's been a while since I read it. ;-]
That album is brilliantly atmospheric! It begins with Gaelic chants that are pulled directly from the soundtrack they did for a British drama series, "Robin of Sherwood" (1984-1986)! A very entertaining retelling of Robin Hood, with good writing, a bit of comic relief, and the music of Clannad! I laughed, I cried, and fell in love with Maid Marion... Basically, I loved every minute! ;-]
I would recommend reacting to clannad theme from Harry's game
Wow...this singer sounds a *lot* like Loreena McKennit here.
Please review the below song Jim Mc Cann Grace..
Wow, Clannad?! Not a bad song, but this (and the following album Sirius) was during their most commercial period. They were collaborating with people like Bono and Bruce Hornsby, plus expanding their sound with electric guitar, drums and saxes. This actually caused a schism in the band with Maire's brother Pol Brennan leaving the group. The irony is they then continued on the following albums (Anam, Banba, etc.) in a style that went back to their breakthrough album Magical Ring, sort of mix of celtic-folk and smooth-pop, not too far off what sister Enya was doing but not as keyboard-driven. Oh, and Clannad is a simplification of "Clann as Dobhar," Irish for "Family from Dore".
Try Martha's Harbour by All About Eve.
Watch out JP. The Bono haters are always poised to jump. You can type Bon and someone will furiously start typing how much Bono sucks and U2 haven’t been good since some specified time. Bono is a great singer. He’s a great lyricist. Mainly because he just takes chances. Some of his lyrics bomb and some are perfect. I understand why he gets under some peoples skin. But U2 makes some great music.
WOW. Where did this come from? I love this album.
Oooooo.. Clannad!
Moya Brennan, the female lead, is Enya's sister! Their uncles are into in the band with another couple of members! Macalla is one of my favorite albums from them! There's "Caislein Oir", "Buchaill on Eirne," and my favorite song on the album (and I feel the most powerful) is "Almost Seems (too late to turn)!"
Exactly Enya is one of four more sisters of Moya (=Máire)
Definitely recommend listening to the entire Robin Of Sherwood soundtrack by Clannad.
A whole album listen Macalla would be great. No weak songs here. Great reaction; nice that you liked it.
The band went from Irish folk towards jazzy folk spherical toward windy rock and then a balanced spherical folk jazz
Thanks you for returning to Clannad! Enya is the younger sister. She was briefly in the band ( late 70s ? Early 80s )) . Their music evolved from very traditional in the 1970's, when I saw them on the Mall in DC , through semi new-age and pop, and then back to a modern-traditional sound. I last saw them on Valentine's Day in 2014 at The MIM. They also scored the music for the Robin of Sherwood TV series ( broadcast on Showtime in the 80's ). Alas, the older members / uncles ( Noel and Padraig/Patrick ) are no longer with us. There is a documentary ( PastPresent ) that will give you a very cursory view of the band and their importance to the modern resurgence of Irish music. Marie/Moya's vocals have always been clear and haunting. See the video of them at Christ Church, with Anuna backing them on a few songs.
"Clannad" is Irish for family - the band is made up from members of one extended family, and Enya is the sister of the lead singer. And they're Irish names, so you're bound to mispronounce them! The lead singer's name is pronounced "Moya ni Brennan". I'd recommend "Theme from Harry's Game" - a short haunting track that sends shivers down my spine every time. Caisleán Óir is another great track of theirs.
More exactly its "family/clan(n) as (=from) Dobhair (pronounced "door")! The inventor of this Japanese animee was the same superficialy as you and so gave it the same name 'Clannad' instead of 'Clann'! :-/
@@rechtschreib-exorzist8936 Thanks - I often wondered about the -ad ending. I'd assumed it was a syntax or case difference. Dobhair means water, IIRC.
Great!
Unexpected artist (from those I know. And I like when you do that!)
Yeah, she and her sister were in the band. Enya quit, and her sister kept going, as far as I know.
Yes, Enya was in the band at the start of the 80s briefly, but she had already far departed by the time they recorded this track around 85.
Clannad did a wide range of styles that started in Celtic, folk, Irish.
So glad you are discovering Clannad. Listen a lot.
The drums here taught me how to play them... One of Clannad's best
Justin, your first attempt at the band’s name was spot on 👍🏾
God not heard this for 30 odd years.
Great album
That Macalla album is amazing. I've seen them perform live and they're terrific. Maire's voice is gorgeous... and she plays a mean harp too. I would also recommend Always Seems Too Late to Turn. Gorgeous, haunting music. U2 was a huge fan of Clannad, and used to play their song, Harry's Game before taking the stage at their concerts. There's actually a beautiful video featuring Maire and Bono for this song.
‘Indoor’ has some sheer magic too. Pol’s writing has a deep layer oftentimes. Nothing bad said about Ciaran’s and Moyà’s however
omg i LOVE this song!! bono's vocals excel at giving passion, body, texture, and emotion. if i remember correctly, this song was used in a UK tv production of robin hood titled ROBIN OF SHERWOOD starring michael praed from around the same time. it was a fabulous series that clannad also did the soundtrack for.
and yes, PLEASE do U2's THE UNFORGETTABLE FIRE. it's my most favourite of their albums and their most atmospheric and experimental. yes, brian eno and daniel lanois co-produced. they were the driving force behind that LP's sonic vibe ❤
No, that song was not used in that TV show! But there´s another song of another album that was used there: 'Caisleáin Óir' (= "The Golden Castle") from the same album 'Macalla'
Oh Bono take off dem boots & stop screeching please. A cynical me thought this was a Marketing ploy back in the day. It just fades away into a window condensation... Clarinet or soprano sax Lounge Rock that took mid80s Cafe Culture by Storm. But I loved Magical Ring and Macalla though....
I recently purchased Maire's eponymous CD from the charity shop and really wanted it to be A Calum Malcolm classic production. The jury's still out on that one.
I loved pre Joshua Tree U2. They were so pompous but revolutionised guitar rock in the same way as The Mighty Van Halen did, cough, stateside. I'd venture to suggest both bands' records reside in the Much Malingned Bands Rack nowadays but
Since when should that stop us eh? And the Cradle Will Rock? 😂Wok on Justin. Have u see Junior's Grades?
U have a responsibility! leave no stone unturned! A Bono vs Diamond Dave Pose Off it is then. With Clannad as in-between rounds interludes.
Sounds like a Formula, Dave.
@Paul-Martin Scheib it's an OK to Good song.... but a trifle treading water-y, what with the length and fade out. Have you heard Katiera Island by Judie Tzuke, it has the same MOR woodwind/sax? Vibe but goes on for what seems an age.
Maybe less is more after all. Thanks for the help, friend!
Sadly I'll having to use this word all to often of late, but here we go again... Boy, that was dreary. Pretenders, Buckley's crazy folk, and now this tedious Irish folk from Clannad. Talk about the tripe trifecta...
@@CAdams6398 Haha, though i listened to LS some time ago, and didn't mind it. The first 3 👎 The last 2 👍. Re today, yeah, a good 'un for you, not so much me. Hopefully there won't be another one for a while.

@@jfergs.3302 yeah but why do we have to know if you like it or not? I don’t actually care but you state it like if you think the musics bad that it’s a fact not just your opinion. I was addicted to Clannad... Also Deanta... "Ready for the Storm" is another amazing song.
