How I Select the Best San Pedro Cactus Seedlings

  • How I select Seedlings of San Pedro Cactus. The basic plan is to grow cactus seedlings out in the most uniform condtions I can (still working on it) so that when I make initial selections, I am more likely to be picking them for genetic differences vs environmental conditions. I want them to express thier genetic potential. Once they are of a certain size, usually over 1 inch, they start to show more individual traits. I make a first selection of what look like the best cactus and grow those out in 4 inch pots for a year. Then I make a second selection and will pot those for a year in one gallon pots. Select again the following year and put into two or three gallon pots. Each year, just culling more and leaving the very best. I also grow them in uniform conditons, same pots, same soil mix and I water and fertilize the same. All to continue to aim for identical environmental conditions so that confounding enviromental factors interfere less with growth, insuring that I am mostly comparing genetics. Once they are large enough and really showing their colors, they can be further comapred for any other traits one might want to look for. I think this plan is solid, it's not perfect, but perfect is a myth. barring any kind of lab or genetic testing, It works well enough. I no doubt miss a lot of amazing stuff, but someone else will get to grow those out and that's great too!

      Well sir! We ordered 4 cactus, and if we see some good traits, we will buy 400 next year! Honestly, I'm pretty new to cactus. My value is that I relentlessly question everything and am always thinking of ways to do things different, or figure out why things work and don't. It helps to have a background in horticulture (self learned, not schooled).

    I enjoyed looking at all your cacti, the subtle differences was noticeable when they are grouped together like that. I have a few unknown meter tall ones, I got as my first cactus. They were a bargain private sale. One has big spines , I assume it is a Bridgesii. I just got a baby Serra Blue X Bridgesii and a baby Peruvianus Koehres to add to my small greenhouse collection. They are amongst my favourites.

    Hey Steve I love this second channel, ive been watching these videos over and over lately, I just received 11 of your seedlings and are potting them in 50% cactus mix with 50% charcoal with a little bit of worm casting mixed in. I was wondering if you maybe could do a video sometime about the different varieties of wachuma similar to when you do your apple tasting videos, haha not eating them though that would be interesting 😂 but more so what you notice in the different varieties or characteristics you’re seeing. Mine all arrived healthy and beautiful, and I’ll definitely be ordering more in the future to give away as gifts, I have a lot of family and friends who grow plants and cacti/succulents specifically, who I know will love these, ive given your website to a few people to check out and hopefully order some.

      thanks bud. I don't nerd out too hard on the specifics of trich speciation. It just doesn't interest me that much. I have interest in certain morphologies and I don't care too much where I get them as far as species go. These things hybridize so much in the wild or in any diverse collection, that it is challenging to classify them. I'll leave that to others. I'm just a different kind of nerd lol.

    • @SkillCult
      @SkillCult Рік тому +3

      I"m not that sophisticated about it. I have been using a balanced liquid fert, as recommended on the label, with a little kelp extract added. sometimes I'll lean a little harder on nitrogen. A good way to do that is pee. It's got a lot of minerals, a lot of nitrogen and quite a bit of both phos and potasium.

      I use cactus fertilizer. But I do have a tric seedling that seems to be complaining right now and I'm sure that one comes from the Atacama Dessert where rain hasn't fallen for 400 years or something. Can't find that documentary video again to check 😡

    • @SkillCult
      @SkillCult Рік тому +1

      pee is great for fast growth, lots of nitrogen. I often end up using liquid ferts. Usually something balanced like 5-5-5 maybe pee in it a couple of times to shift toward nitrogen, but balanced ones are fine. I like to add kelp extract too.

    • @TeamWachuma
      @TeamWachuma  7 місяців тому +1

      Yeah, I have pretty specific goals for breeding. My interest doesn't run much toward aesthetics, unless it also runs with other goals. That's just me though. There is a lot of potential in trichs in all directions. They are great to work with because of the diversity in the populations and the diversity thrown in seed lots.

    Amazing seedlings, what % of coal are you using in your soil?

    • @SkillCult
      @SkillCult Рік тому

      Usually its about 50% of wood charcoal. I'm usually mixing it with a potting mix, which most have about 20% to 30% pearlite already. But the charcoal has other useful properties, while also acting like an aggregate.

    • @SkillCult
      @SkillCult 2 місяці тому +1

      I wouldn't know about the miracle grow. If cuttings are new, I'd wait til they have a some roots under them. Otherwise, anytime is fine, even young seedlings like food. don't overdo it, but they like quite a bit if you want them to grow fast. I mostly just pee on them and then sometimes other liquid organic ferts and some kelp extract.

      He's talking about the same thing. Bio-char is just charcoal you use for gardening.

    • @TeamWachuma
      @TeamWachuma  7 місяців тому

      I pretty much consider any chared plant material used in horticulture to be biochar. many disagree, but no arguments have dissuaded me yet. It's just terminology. Words are not things. Most of my charcoal is from higher oxygen, relatively open burns, not retorts and I sometimes charge it and sometimes don't. That is a whole can of worms to get into, but I'll be doing some content on my take on all of that.
