I have been waiting for this video!!! Love it!!! We just need medicine for our church... I hope the genetics that we got are extra healing, but they are sooo perfect!!! Thanks again brother!
I don't think that will happen for cactus. It seems more like apples than like the stable vegetables we think of growing from seed. But that is good. I don't want stable. The more variety seed lots throw the better, because it gives more to choose from and more posibility in breeding. I think you could make hybrids and semi-stabilize them eventually, into something like a land race or new species by constant inbreeding and reselection, but it would probably take squite a few generations and there just still seems to be a lot of variation within species for these guys. It is an intriguing project, but I probably won't live long enough, unless I figure out how to get them to flowering size very fast.
I’ve noticed more unique gene expressions when I hard/rough grow them vs creating immaculate perfectly balanced cacti like you have. Something to experiment with perhaps if you haven’t already. If you ever want to swap some cuttings I’d be interested.
@@SkillCult From seed. Overcrowding, uneven light, no root trim, underfed. The character develops and if I take the top cut from the choice cactus the trait continues. If I take a pup and treat it like gold it will become more homogenized and less expressive. But I was surprised by the character stress could bring out. It’s slow and stupid but if you’re like me a cool looking cactus is worth the time. Probably cuts growing speed by 85 percent or so. Arduous torturous slow growth, etoliation can get bad obviously but that’s just where I make the cut. I make sure they are healthy though just far from ideal conditions for fast perfect growth. You definitely have more genetics to play around with than I do.
I sell cutting of them for grafting, but I don't sell fruit or trees yet. Hella Kitty is new, so only a couple people besides me have even tasted it. I will have cuttings this year, but on auction. I won't ever produce a lot of fruit, but who knows, someday others might grow them. I have documented that project on my other channel, skillcult.
I have had some freezing damage I'm in 9a. We get hard freezes winter before this last one was pretty rough but I only lost a couple of plants and had to cut off some tips on others. There are definitely significant differences in hardiness that were apparent. A lot of pachs like tammy, huancabamba, tpm and others were more susceptible. Scopish stuff seemed more tolerant
I haven't had any luck with that. I think the problem is actually not the algae, possibly some kind of slime surface dwelling bacteria. I was told might be similar to the natural desert crust in peyote country cyanobacter or something like that.
they do that occasionally. It is pretty common for the 5 sidee ones to go to 6. A smaller percentage of king tubby start off as 6 ribs. I'm always hoping that anything I select for 5 ribs will stay that way for the most part.
I use a board that presses little divits into the soil surface forming a perfeft grid. I'll show it sometimes, or look back in the team wachuma instagram history.
How do they do in the ground like that out in nor cal? I had one winter wipe out 90% of my cactus while living in Mendo County. Everything was potted. No greenhouse. I have to grow indoors where I live now cause winters are way more harsh.
I"m at 1800 feet. last year was pretty rough, but mostly tip damage and only lost a few small ones. I did move most to high spots with good air drainage. Do you know what your elevation was in Mendo? I'm in the coast ranges out of Ukiah. I'm looking for property that is a little lower in elevation and not in a cold sink.
@SkillCult without looking it up I couldn't tell you where I was at in mendo. I was 8 miles west of Boonville inside the fog belt. I live in salt lake these days. 4300 feet elevation. I gotta grow everything inside here.
I forgot about that experiment. I'll try to figure something out. I think I'll try charcoal. I may have to transplant a few of the smallest ones, but I can do that.
@@willowgalan2942 I cut gordita and king tubby back for propagation and other reasons. I'm looking forward to getting them both grown up big to see their full visual effect. I won't be surprised if the older stems of gordita go from flat to convex on the sides, making a rounded effect.

I bumped my head on a few cactus that made me sit around for 8 hours too. Very nice video.
No contest, but yeah you are fantastic and full on. Far out!
Dude this is so awesome you are liveing my dream
And wow these are all so healthy. Do know that my guy was great but you are better
Loving checking these out!
Really good info here, thanks Steven.
Nice cacti collection!
That first one I bet makes great medicine. Jewel's Giant
it is spelled Juul's, maybe dutch name, dunno the history on that one, but it is a fantastic specimen of a cactus.
Id love to see a video about your perspective on breeding and how many generations it takes for stable offspring

Nice! Do you think we could get a quick update on the rooting of all those TPMs? 🌵🤟
I'm not rootingt them actually. I'm still planning to sell the cuttings. I just haven't been able to deal with it. They are well calloused though :)
I am only rooting the ones I'm keeping, they ugliest ones. but haven't gotten to that either.

Do you mean when initially growing out seedlings?
As in allowing them to express those traits permanently v.s. just temporarily I mean

"You can't keep, name and propagate everything" Challenge accepted.
Très beaux San Pedro très dodus ,belle génétique.
Those apples are wild! Can we buy some of those? Great work :)

@@SkillCult Oh cool! Maybe if I ever buy land some day
All I know about tuscon fats is that it is a sister plant of a ritter scop
Beautiful project. What grow zone do you live in? Looks like you don't deal with freeze damage.

“Blocky” is a trigger word for me 😮
What is the variety of mescaline content in these? Are any of them bred for potency or is this mainly for the looks?
Mist a little peroxide on the seedling tray substrate that will kill off the algae and won’t harm the seedling
I haven't had any luck with that. I think the problem is actually not the algae, possibly some kind of slime surface dwelling bacteria. I was told might be similar to the natural desert crust in peyote country cyanobacter or something like that.
Peroxide is sadly not effective on cyanobacteria. They are really hard to deal with, if they start strong
I have a San Pedro that stepped down in ribs from 6 ribs to 5 I thought was interesting

How do you plant the seeds? the seedlings in the trays looks very symmetrically spaced

Why is the cubbyness favorable?
Already sold out?
If you mean seedlings, I never listed them this year. I just couldn't get them to size in time. Should be a lot in late spring or early summer.
Cool thanks man. I checked the site and confused myself. I signed up for the email list so hopefully I can grab some then. Appreciate the reply!
Give the seedlings a top dressing. Would be a shame to lose so many

gordita was very sexy i love her
your collection has a lot of personal character and charm and im a particular fan of yours over other sellers :)
