If I take off a pickguard I just put the screws back in the holes. It's rather see a shiny screw head than an unstained hole. No, that's not a euphemism.
Cool Les Paul , love to see a Teal Green one with the Black binding /Plastics , also I definitely agree with the Doghair suggestion , I love the Brian Ray signature Doghair SG , the pickups sound great on the Cherry LP ! Thanks Trogly !
I have the LP Standard 60s. Those are the worst pickups ever. The neck is wooly and the bridge is brittle and tinny. Any decent 3rd party set will completely blow these away.
100% agree with you, it doesn't take much to change the feel. Even a different profile, but the same thickness can make a perceivable difference. I had a solid Rosewood Esquire built for me, I specified a "thick" neck. As soon as I played it I fell in love with the neck, when I measured it I was shocked to measure 1.16" thickness, it's gigantic! Not sure, but I really think a super thick neck can affect the guitar's tone (in a good way). Now I have a 12 pound single pickup Telecaster (Esquire) that is my favorite guitar (favorite this week, next week might be different).
@hkguitar1984 greetings HK! Curious your icon is a Les Paul but you definitely seem to like Teles and Esquires! 😅 do you like Les Pauls still too would you say?
Hey Trogly 745 tonight back to the bottom again. Burstbucker 3 sounds narly. I like these we already reviewed these I believe. Those are secret codes for color. Nice guitars.thanks Trogly. Catch you on the next one.
I love the unpotted uneven wind here. They do sound bright and zero muffle in the neck. So good to my ears! I want to put these in my semi hollow to hopefully grab more of the "woodiness" that is just not there with potted '57 classics.
Same here, check my comment for the differences between slug and screw coils. When I believe the unpotted pickups shin is when you turn the guitar's volume down, you really do get a sort of woody-acoustic sound (IMO). All of my Les Paul guitars have the unpotted Burstbucker pickups, a #1 in the Neck and #3 in the Bridge. On one of my sets of Burstbuckers I swapped out the AlNiCo II magnets and replaced them with the AlNiCo III (same as the Custombuckers use). The difference in magnet types isn't huge, but it is noticeable, more in the feel when you're playing. Out of all the AlNiCo magnets the AlNiCo III are the weakest strength (as far as measurable Gauss readings).
I put Nickel Burstbuckers 2 and 3 in my 80 standard in 2000 I love them and now they are aged with with the guitar perfectly they do feedback easily but it's controllable and fun IMO. These finishes are spectacular!
I love this one. But I also bought a cherry Les Paul Special over the TV Yellow. I'd want the 50s neck in cherry. And may I mention Sir, your playing seems to have taken a serious step up.
I have a Mod Collection standard that looks just like this except it’s all black out and has push pulls. Beautiful instruments. Mine obviously doesn’t have these pickups but it screams and can dial in that wonderful classic tone most people like.
I didn't realize (never looked into it, either) that the Burstbuckers were unpotted. Looks like all the "Modern Collection" pickups on their site are, but only some of the "Original" and obviously none of the "Historic". '57 Classics are my favorite Gibson pickups, and they are potted.
Magnets make all the difference in humbuckers. An A2 will be warm, spongy and organic. An A5 will start to get brighter, more bite and more scooped. An A5 is also a more powerful magnet so it can support more output (more winds) and without enough winds, it can start to sound thin. A nice combo is an A2 in the neck and an A5 in the bridge.
Great video Trogly ! Personally , I don’t understand the attraction to the TV yellow or the white ones for that matter . I can somewhat understand the white one but I think the yellow is just plain old butt ugly ! I suppose that’s why everyone gets to have their own opinion . In this video , the cherry model is hands down the absolute winner here ! I love it ! I didn’t even know this was available and I think Trogly has just sold a guitar for Gibson . I’ll tell them you sent me . What a gorgeous rock machine that thing is ! I’ll be contacting all points of sale for as many details as I can get starting next week , once I have my head back out of the clouds and can formulate my questions ! Did I mention that I think this thing in cherry with black trim is just plain old beautiful , and sounds great too . Definitely without the pickguard , maybe I can get it without it installed just shipped loose . That would be perfect ! Thanks again for the video Trogly and to everyone else , take care and rock on !
Love the hog tops! I think BB bridge with the 60’s BB neck would be perfect pickup combo for my taste. That Cherry top slaps hard, but I know I NEED the fatty neck.
Great job Trogly, nice playing and perfect comparison to the 50's version 😊 I think this one is the prettier guitar, however, the yellow 50's stands out more, as something special, because of the contrast with the black bindings. The cherry just seems to hide it a bit too well, so i keep thinking it looks like an unbound Studio, of which I'm definitely not a fan.
The sound comparison has solidified my feelings that having the Alnico 5 in the neck and the Alnico 2 in the bridge is the ideal combination of sounds for a 2-humbucker guitar.
The chatter on the neck binding kills me. I sent a different Les Paul back to Gibson and they rolled the fret board for no charge. I don’t know if it’s just bad lighting or my imagination, but I feel like it’s worse in the black that the cream binding.
I remmber seeing the Lzzy Hale Explorer (can't remember if it was the black or white one) brand new in a store, it was at least this bad, if not worse.. I'd say it's because they scrape the binding, which I would more than like if they stopped doing so the guitars would actually start looking the price you pay for them..
I've had arguments with people that say the Burstbuckers that come in the Standards are potted, it's the ones you buy separately are unpotted. Not sure what to think.
Trogly- i think if youd enclude 60s of playing on a lower gain stage, it would really show how a guitar sounds. As of now, its clean or mega distorted. Just play some chords on the edge of breakup- at least thats what i would like if you asked regarding opinions :D
Nice videos, gettin' pro-ish - but why don't you ever comment on how well the fretnibs line up with the frets? Are you sponsered by Gibson? (you never seem to mention the bad build quality of many recent Gibsons) The fretnibs vary SO much from Gibson to Gibson, but mostly, they DON'T have a smooth transition and you have a small gap, where the string can get caught while doing vibrato - I had to get a new fretjob my Les Paul when I got it (new) just vondering...
Some models don't have the fret nibs at all. Take the 2014 line up. None of them have fret nibs. Gibson made a big deal of the rolled fret endings but then went back on them just a year later. I like them aesthetically but yeah, they can cause a gap which catches your low E string (which can be especially prevalent on models from the 00's for some reason?)
@@MikkelHNielsen they started slowly declining after 2006 really. That's when they started chambering weight relief & generally cutting corners. After around 2010 you began seeing quite serious QC issues becoming increasingly more prevalent, which might not have been such a big deal for more budget lines but Gibson as you know, are not cheap guitars lol (& which is why all my Gibson guitars were made prior to then). They seem to have turned things around somewhat since the buyout but they still ask a hell of a lot of money for what you get in return.
@@jubei7259 yeah, totally agree. Mine is a 2017 classic model, nicely built except the fretnibs. But things wasn't looking good for Gibson, in every way, at that period, seems like it's gettin' a bit better again though
60s Neck P/Up (Clearer Vs) and 50s Bridge P/Up (Warmer IIs) might be the best balance (for me) … Or do they sound too same-y, that way … ?! 🤔 It’s just that the 50s Neck seems a bit muddy, and the 60s Bridge a bit too harsh (and the 60s Middle a bit too brash, too) … 🤔
Nice guitar sounds good. More of an Epiphone guy the inspired by Gibsons are about the same for 1/2 the price .🤡 U can rock an Epi on stage & not worry.
I don’t think the difference is very much on these models. Literally a few millimeters. Definitely not 15 percent. That would be a huge difference. That said the 50’s necks on these are not like the baseball bat neck on my 58 reissue. I think the idea of a 50’s neck may scare some people away if they have played a baseball bat neck before. I would take one of these with the 50’s neck but the 60’s pickups.
@ I was going to say 10-15% … but even a few millimetres is quite a proportion, on these … and I think the difference is probably deceptive, visually (plus, it depends how you measure it - it’s not just the ‘radius’, it’s the additional ‘area of the circle’, so to speak … ?) … 🤷🏻♂️ I definitely like the clarity of the 60s neck P/Up … and prefer thicker necks, too … 👍🏼
That’s a beautiful guitar. Congratulations to the new owner. I would actually be happy with either color, but I’m definitely a 60s neck person.
Me too! For me it's 60s neck over 50s neck...
If I take off a pickguard I just put the screws back in the holes. It's rather see a shiny screw head than an unstained hole. No, that's not a euphemism.
same here...cheers!!!

Same here! I’s nice to know I’m not the only one!
Absolutely the 60's standard. Tell him he got a great guitar! Awesome Nicolas! Definitely the Trans Red, and it plays great too.
Got myself a 58 reissue custom shop today! Lemon burst!
Congrats nice piece!
Burstbucker 2 and 3 is one of the best pickup sets I've ever played. Not too hot, not too quiet. They are just right.
Reminds me of the Gibson Dark Fire, always liked the red with black binding look.
Cool Les Paul , love to see a Teal Green one with the Black binding /Plastics , also I definitely agree with the Doghair suggestion , I love the Brian Ray signature Doghair SG , the pickups sound great on the Cherry LP ! Thanks Trogly !
Dude this video is an EXCELLENT comparison of the 50s and 60s models and their pickup sounds. You've absolutely sold me on a 60s Standard
Well said!
Thanks for sharing the comparison. I’m sure that takes some time for you to be able get that all edited the way you want
Love the red! My pick over the yellow for sure.
Those 60s BurstBuckers sound nice and warmer!
The 61 burstbucker it's currently the best set of pick-ups Gibson is making, those just sound the best
I have the LP Standard 60s. Those are the worst pickups ever. The neck is wooly and the bridge is brittle and tinny. Any decent 3rd party set will completely blow these away.
The Red sound more aggressive I like it better
I really like that vintage cherry guitar Very nice! Its 60's for me.
I like the vintage cherry. I can’t wait to try one out
60's Burstbuckers jumped right out to me. Winner for me.
Amazing that only a *3 millimeter* difference (or about a tenth of an inch) in neck profiles separates _“yuck!”_ from _“yum!”_ 😂

I'm a 50s neck fan, but I much prefer the pickups in that red 60s.
It sure looks sweet in the gloss Cherry with black binding!
Beautiful Hog Top, looks great without the guard ' love those 60s BBs ...and you don't have to polish her up now that Trogly's worked the magic '
Yes! If the Mod shop does a 60s version in a Silver Fox finish, I definitely want one to go with my Explorer. Preferably with black hardware.

Your getting some good chops there trogly.
I feel like these need the binding on the back as well. I think that’d look really good. On the cherry one especially.
Love the hog tops! I think BB bridge with the 60’s BB neck would be perfect pickup combo for my taste.
That Cherry top slaps hard, but I know I NEED the fatty neck.
I think it would sound better with the pick guard on:)
Way better tone with the pickguard on! 😂
Some aftermarket tone screws will really take it to the next level
beautiful axe, THANKS for doin the review even tho we did not make it
dunno why the black trim makes the difference but it does

@ mine looked like a rat had chewed on it.
The Cherry is so much more beautiful than a wine color. 🤘🏻🎸
Definitely prefer the Red
For me it'd be the 60s version with the Kluson tuners from the 50s model and in TV Yellow...
'60's for my preferences in all ways. (To me the 60's Burstbuckers sounded warmer)
Will this cherry red fade by UV light as the old bursts or do they have other dyes these days?
Cherry one’s pickups more articulate. Your playing has improved dramatically.
Good evening all. When someone says pickups are airy im thinking at least a little microphonic . It's got a great sound.
Oh yea that colour is great, and a 60's neck! Yes please, very nice indeed.
YES the silver fox would be AMAZING!!!
I think also a cool green color like the watermelon burst sorta.... the black or ivory colored binding would look sweet with the green IMHO
I like the pickup distorted tones better on the Cherry version. Both great guitars, but in this comparison the Cherry gets my vote.
I've been watching your show since 2016 and always like before I watch. I love your show!
Great sounding guitars
The pickup leads look long enough to put them in another guitar next to it😂😂
I think cherry looks so much better than the pale TV yellow.
Also the woodgrain looks better with cherry red,
I wish they would make one in white.
There's something very right about a red Les Paul.
I've had arguments with people that say the Burstbuckers that come in the Standards are potted, it's the ones you buy separately are unpotted. Not sure what to think.
I like the BB 1 & 2
I was the one saying "silver fox please", maybe make that the '70s Standard Mahogany?
Love both but id take yellow 50s
I’ve got a mahogany top studio from 2009. I believe it’s got burstbuckers, but no binding. These look sweet feet 🦶
First thing I always do is hit that like button.
I like your show. I always watch and like every day.
Thanks for the video.
In the cleans, the 50's sounded thicker? Could that be due to the neck?

I really dislike pick guard holes on new guitars. I wish there was an option or just leave it in the case.
My guy swiped the pickguard!
Guy that bought it said to leave it off. Im sure it's in the case 😂
I actually prefer the Gibson 61 pickups I had wizz premium and whent back to the 61s😊

10lbs TV yellow 60s neck good to go 🤘
The yellow really grew on me in 20 minutes.
The tv yellow is just a fantastic guitar
If Gibson could drop the multi tool and all the rest of the case candy this Les Paul could be $2k!

Why don’t Gibson simply supply the pickguard and screws, packed with the guitar and leave it up to the buyer whether to fit it or not ?

Alnico 2 pickups hotter than Alnico 5?
Why the hell does Gibson put a felt pad on the back of the pick guard that reacts to the finish? That makes no sense
