Been wanting one of these. Having played a Les Paul custom SG for the last 35 years, I'm probably better off with the 60's, although I should probably try both.
Great comparison I have an Epiphone 1960 tribute plus that’s a great guitar it comes out of the factory with Grover locking tuners Gibson 57 classic pick ups they did a run of them and they’re great guitars for the money Maybe if you ever hear or see one pick it up and do a video on it
The tribute is an amazing guitar bro! I had one in the black cherry but sold it a few months ago and found another epi lp from 2010 that’s kinda rare, it’s a 50th anniversary 1960 v3 in cherry sunburst kind of the 1959 that they make now but with a gloss finish and the one that I found would have came with burstbuckers new but someone put mojotone pickups in it along the way, anyway great guitar and I’m super pleased with it!! Keep rocking that tribute brother 👍🎸
I have both the 50's and 60's standards, and i have to say, the 50s is my favorite.... but only because of the fatter neck. Both guitars are absolutely stellar though.
I just picked one of these up after watching this video I was on the fence about it but seeing that he’s a solid body is very reminiscent of the R9 at half the price
I had the 61s in a SG and hated them... to me they were dark muddy and lifeless. I had also put a set of BB1 & BB2 in a 2018 Tribute and they weren't that great... when I ordering late last year I figured either way I would be swapping pickups. However I went with the 50s and the BB1 & 2 in it, as you mention, sound amazing in my standard 50s. I love them... I don't know if Gibson modified something or the set I had before (you know they are all wound a little differently to emulate the 50s winding) just were meh. I have a 2017 Standard HP with the slim asymmetrical neck, it's a 4A top and amazing but almost too thin. For long gigs, unless it's more of a shred fest, the 50s is very comfortable. Great review, hoping you guys get to 50K soon, keep up the great work!
Sounds exactly like the pickups sitting too close to the strings. Lower them down. For some reason manufacturers usualy default the pickups higher than nececary and you lose dynamics and clarity.
Couldn’t decide i got both but i will say the 50’s is so close to my 2002 standard. But i have been playing the 60’s lemonburst a lot the pickups not near as hot as the 50’s or the 2002 standard
The 60s sounds better to me with the distortion or overdrive as I suspected. I have one that I setup with heavy flatwounds for jazz but even through a super clean Fender amp I can tell those pickups are pissed off at me and they just wanna rock lol!
I’ve played a 20 yr old Sg (got new back in early/mid 2000’s, for a gift/1st brand name guitar, got very lucky. Has 60. Neck 490r/498t, the grain of wood and feel and sound is great! Love it). ; But seeing ive always loved LP’s & 20 yrs wirh my orginal axe, saw gibson went back to old school for new (2023 standards), i went for the 60s model burst, it looks great, feels good but different around heel lol), Big question is due to having spent a pretty $ on this brand new 60’s LP standard burst…im familar with 61 (or sny burstbuckers), i assumed the 490/498t was a very close model to the classic rock PAF tone. Which Bring me to FINAL question..main diffetences between BBucker 1 & 2 vs a paid of 61 humbucks? Want to love this axe but heard mixed reviews on 61 pups? Also i play thru a mashall & usually play with gain in standard tuning; fan of classic rock & tones). I do liie my SG tone, seems like the LPs neck is lowder while playing deep low notes/chords, only time i think bridge is louder is playing lead from G-high E? Curious thoughts on pAir of 61’s 2023 pups in an lp standard vs classic PAF sound
I been playing a 37 year old Les Paul custom SG for the last 34 years. I'm looking into getting I would think the 60's standard because I'm used to the SG neck. So you're not liking the pickups on yours?
@@ericbitzer5247love the guitar..60s neck feels on the Lp feels the same until u get to the heel around the 14the fret lol so yes , the neck is rhe same or mine may be skinnier on my 60s LP by a little, the body is what you need to get used to, the 60s standard also isnt weight relieved …i got lucky and got an 8.5lbs lol but i read most cone in between 9-12lbs. My SG has the pickups that Gibson puts in a lot of their Les Paul Customs (490r/498t) which give my SG a great rock tone, the 61 burstbuckers in the 60s Lp is rhe only thing in changing on my Lp , love the body/finish/neck, but i need to swap pups to make if the Lp ive always wanted. Go play one before buying..or at least a Les Paul, the neck is great, but obvs the higher up the neck , the less access since its a singe cut vs the SGs double cut..where u can almost play the 22nd note lol so thats the part id say to check if u like..cuz theres no changing the wooden profile lol but i can always swap pups
@@user-cd2cz3tv3u Thank you so much. I will try them out before I buy anything. I bought an Epiphone Les Paul years ago to not beat on my Gibson, but ended up playing the Gibson anyway because it just sounded and felt better. The Epiphone was stolen, but I do kind of know how the Les Paul feels, just sure a Gibson would feel, play, and sound better than the Epiphone. I would hate to have to change pickups on a new guitar, but I'll see how it sounds. Thanks again for the information, I really appreciate it.
@@ericbitzer5247 i liked the sound of the stock 50s standard LP (burst bucker 1&2’s rather than 61 burstbuckers), but i dont like the wider neck profile, i cant change that so i figured i go with the most comfortable standard, and the 60s does have some small “upgraded” specs, such as AA figured maple top vs maple top on 50s, and 60s has the Grover Tuners (knock on wood, it stays in tune great, better then my SG with gibson tuners), but yah if you can go play a 50s standard and 60s standard..but if ur coming from an SG odds are 60s will feel more at home, takes time getting used to the less access up high cuz its a single cut..didnt wanna add a fat neck into the mix too. The stock pickups are ok…they have a very hot/vintage tone, little harsh , which is why im most likely putting in symour duncan slash 2.0 alnico 2 pro pickiups..they sound open and warm with a nice bite still, but def not selling the 61 burstbuckers (theyre unpotted and unbalanced, which sounds like a bad thing but thats how the original PAF’s were, but these are just a tad too hot for vintage tones (unless playing in a bad/mix, they would prob cut right thru nicely). Goodluck
I like watching your reviews. Very usefull. Do you think is it better to buy a '60s or a '50s Standard Les Paul when already owning a '50s with P-90 and a SG Standard '61 ? Playing styles are mainly a lot of blues, some classic rock, some pop, some jazz... but no hard rock or heavier playing styles. I like the '61 burstbucker in my SG and really like the fat neck of my '50s P90 Les Paul ... but my fear is that the '50s Standard with burstbucker 1 & 2 will sound too close to my P-90. Thanks for the help.
*nickel. Also did you make sure both volume knobs were at 10 when doing dc readings? Seems like you had the burstbucker 2's volume knob a bit down.. it should have a higher resistance than the bb1
More likely a fail in factory on labeling stuff. To set the volume pot accidently so it is exactly the same as other pickup would be a great coincidence
Very good review. The burst buckers are not as “muddy” sounding as the 61’s. I bought the 50’s in heritage cherry. It is amazing. Very articulate pickips! The neck is in fact noticeably fatter and really does fit most bigger hands, better.
So in your honest unbiased opinionn if someone with a knack for tinkering got the 50s and upgraded the pups and pots to CS, pups, would it get you that much closer to the real deal or does the long neck tenon/lighter wood really make an impact. I know some of those vintage ones were heavy as hell. ) I feel like what most people pay the extra cash for is the provenance and attention to detail, aesthetics etc. I wish the Gibson 50s had the long neck tenon like its Epiphone counterpart does.
I bought a gold top w/ p90s about a year ago. HATED IT. The neck was a baseball bat. Traded it for a SG with a shit load of extras. GC still ripped me tho😔
This baby first hit the scene in 1952, thanks to some guitar nerd named Les Paul. He’s a guy who took one look at the state of guitars and said, “Nah, we can do better.” And thus, the Les Paul was born, and it’s been making rock legends out of mere mortals ever since. Think Jimmy Page, Slash, Duane Allman, and Joe Perry - they all signed their names in the holy book of rock with this six-stringed wonder! Now let’s talk design. The Les Paul has got this single cutaway thing going on, so it looks like it’s ready to punch you in the face with one hand tied behind its back. It’s got a solid feel, like you're holding the very essence of rock 'n' roll in your hands. We’re talking a mahogany body with a carved maple top - because why settle for just one kind of wood when you can have two? Add in a mahogany neck and a rosewood fretboard, and you’ve got yourself a guitar that’s as smooth as a single malt scotch. The pickups? Two humbuckers. You know what that means? No hum, no buzz, just pure, unadulterated power. These things churn out a thick, warm tone, like hot chocolate on a winter’s day, but with a shot of whiskey to make sure you’re paying attention. It’s the sound of a Les Paul, folks - rich and full, with lows that rumble in your gut and mids that make your spine tingle. And don’t forget the fixed bridge. This isn’t some flimsy tremolo setup; this bridge stays put. It’s solid, it’s stable, and it’s got sustain for days. You hit a note on this thing, and it’ll sing until you tell it to shut up. The tone? Oh, man, the tone! It’s like biting into a piece of dark chocolate - rich, full, and a little bit naughty. Those humbuckers give it a thick, powerful sound, perfect for everything from hard rock to heavy metal, to jazz, to blues. This guitar doesn't just play music; it makes statements. It tells the world, “I’m here, I’m loud, and you’re gonna listen!” So, there you have it - the Les Paul. A guitar that’s not just an instrument, but a lifestyle choice. It’s got soul, it’s got character, and it’s got enough power to knock you on your ass. And that, my friends, is what rock 'n' roll is all about! stratvslespaul.com
I have the gold top with the humbuckers and a cherry burst (that's not so cherry, see my profile pic) in the 50's Standard as well as an alpine white custom and appetite burst Slash. My favorite is the one you see in my profile pic. It's under 8-1/2 pounds where all the others are around 9, and there's just something right (maybe wrong?) about the feel as well. I love all of my Les Pauls, but that's my fav.
Speaking of Guitar Help, looking to Swap my 61 BB’s from my Gibson Les Paul 60’s standard (only few months old). The 61 BBs sound very tinny to my ears, so i ordered Symour Duncan Slash 2.0 Alnico II pro set of pickups to replace my LP’s stock 61 Burstbuckers. Anyone have any input as to if i made a good choice or if theyres a better option for a good big open/warm/full sounding pickup set with still a good amount of compression and bite (they seen like they have a nice bitey bridge but not as bright and tinny as my 61 burstbuckers, and that creamy warm neck tone; i believe the only difference with the original SD slash pups and the newer 2.0’s is that they’re a little hotter..but i read they have same tone qualities & bascially the same, just wee bit louder *i figured that can never be a bad thing since i love classic rock from late 60’s to mid 80’s and mostly playing with gain/overdrive and reverb lol). Just trying to make my LP sound great, keeping the stock 61 BB’s incase i ever wanna pop them back in, but from youtube demos, these SD slash 2.0 set sounded very much like my ideal “les paul” sound. I already i have the high/cut thru more sharp tone with my Gibson SG (490r/498t) which sounds great in that guitar and does the AC/DC to even some Sabbath tones very well. Looking for a little different, more “full/open” sound out of my LP. Not sure if this matters but my LP is new so no push/pull non-sense and no weight relief (got lucky with an 8.5 lb solid body), and i usually play thru a Marshall DSL 20c or Boss Katana MKII 100w. Any input would be great before i put these new pups in.
Both looked and sounded excellent, But to my ear when you had it on the fuzz , it seemed like you had to push the 50s a lil harder to get the tone you were looking for, whereas the 60s seemed to fit right in crisp n clean.. And just seemed to have a lil more bite imo. Great reaction.
Did Gibson make a “61” Les Paul. Standard? I think they had already moved to the SG body style. Interesting they would use a “61” pickup in a guitar that wasn’t made in “61”.
I was pretty distracted by another 1990 Firebird hanging in the background. I notice this one is on Reverb. Probably a good move not giving this one away. Let me know if you change your mind. Keep it up guys. Great review, as always.
Or buy the 59 Standard. There are more interesting LP’s like a Special or a Custom, would not want or need two Standards. Nice comparison video, both great guitars!
If you have smaller hands, you might prefer 60s neck. They're alittle thinner like Fender and PRS. I've never gotten comfortable on my 50s neck. They are alot thicker like mine acoustic guitar neck. If I would had known, I would never buy two of mine 50s. 13:33
I love the 50s gold tops and the 60s triburst, and guitar center has a lemon burst 60s that’s very nice too…. But if you want a 50s guitar that’s a little hotter than try the slash stuff, or even the Adam Jones one of you can find one…. Also don’t forget about the classic it’s a super versatile guitar 🎸 actually I think the classic is best for a newer guitar player trying to decide if they want to invest everything into playing 😂 plus it’s like putting money in the bank because they hold their value
Personally I prefer the thinner neck as hand size plays a big role in how well you play based on how fast your hands move around the neck. Both of these guitars are an affordable way to own and play a Les Paul! Thanks for show casing these awesome guitars!

I’ve often wondered. I’ve got 2 50s ones and like the necks quite a bit. I’ve also a 2019 Classic that’s gorgeous but the neck is a toothpick. I’ve not had my hands on one of these 60s stds. Is the Classic toothpick neck what I can expect on the 60s? I’d like to get one but I don’t want another neck like my Classic.
I have small hands, so after playing both I went with a '60s Standard in bourbon-burst. Just that little bit easier to play, although I have an '81 LP 2PU Artisan, and the Fifties neck profile on that feels great above the 7th fret. All that said, if tobaccoburst or HCSB (or even goldtop) had been offered on the '60s at the time , I'd have gone with one of those colors. Those nitpicks notwithstanding, my '60s is the best Les Paul out of the 5 I've owned and is rapidly becoming my #1!
The 50s looked and sounded better but at the end of the day it does come down to neck profile. I have a 50's with P-90s and a 2000s 60's with humbuckers and the 60's neck is just more comfortable to me despite the 50's being my dream guitar in look and sound.

@taxationistheft2.0lmao you’re wrong
Great tone and playing Both Masterpieces of Les Paul's are so beautiful so Gorgeous
best of both... Gold top and just had the neck reshaped to the 60's. Smokin and I have the 60's sunburst.
I bought the 50s through Wildwood guitars, honeyburst. Fantastic. Thanks.
In love with the Satin finishes Gibson Standards 2022+
I have a Epiphone Les Paul Classic Worn 2020 a Cherry burst 💥 so I’d have to go with the 50’s. The more red the better 👍👍 The Cherry and Tobacco burst are my favourite of the Les Paul’s.
It really does come down to neck profile preference.
Have the 50's Heritage Cherry. Love it with the exception of a mismatched flame top. But it makes it all that more unique.
wow. I liked the looks of the 50s better at first but that bourbon burst grew on me. I think if I were just chording all day the 50s might be a better sound but once you got to shredding/riffing, the 60s won me over for good and all. So now...on to saving up some bucks.
I have the 70s deluxe goldtop now as well, and i have to say the neck is even fatter than on my 50s. It goes without saying, i love it
@flurkin wow I would love to check that out! I own a 50's standard goldtop and I dig that fay neck!
I´m thinking of getting the 50's one, does it weight less than the 60's?
@_Blasman_ I find each LP is unique in how much it weighs. My 50's is the heaviest of the 3.
Just ordered the 50s like 30min ago
Clapton's Beano Gibson is 50s (1959). I'll buy one.
I just picked one of these up after watching this video I was on the fence about it but seeing that he’s a solid body is very reminiscent of the R9 at half the price
I haven't picked up either yet to try but I'm drawn to the 60s!
This channel deserves 10 M subs
Bought the 2012, 60 LPS. Love it. Great tone and particularly like the slim neck.
50’s is the winner in my opinion. But I’ll take both.
I wish I could get the 60s standard in the tobacco burst
Couldn’t decide i got both but i will say the 50’s is so close to my 2002 standard. But i have been playing the 60’s lemonburst a lot the pickups not near as hot as the 50’s or the 2002 standard
very thorough and well executed playthrough, I really appreciate that in a guitar review!
The 60s sounds better to me with the distortion or overdrive as I suspected. I have one that I setup with heavy flatwounds for jazz but even through a super clean Fender amp I can tell those pickups are pissed off at me and they just wanna rock lol!
Lol that is a great way of putting it, I might steal that line!
will be grabbing a 60s oxblood standard soon
Great choice
I’ve played a 20 yr old Sg (got new back in early/mid 2000’s, for a gift/1st brand name guitar, got very lucky. Has 60. Neck 490r/498t, the grain of wood and feel and sound is great! Love it). ;
But seeing ive always loved LP’s & 20 yrs wirh my orginal axe, saw gibson went back to old school for new (2023 standards), i went for the 60s model burst, it looks great, feels good but different around heel lol), Big question is due to having spent a pretty $ on this brand new 60’s LP standard burst…im familar with 61 (or sny burstbuckers), i assumed the 490/498t was a very close model to the classic rock PAF tone.
Goodluck
@@user-cd2cz3tv3u Thanks again. I'll definitely try several out.
60’s for the neck all day. The pickups don’t present much of a difference that some minor EQ adjustments couldn’t compensate for
I like watching your reviews.
I have always wanted a gold top and I like a thick 50s neck
Youd probly dig the hck outa a 53 p90 stop the first historic collecs were awesome .
57 otherwise was great too one of the best ever
I have had an Epiphine sunburst for 18 years. Great guitar. Wanna upgrade to the limited edition 60’s tri-burst
@@tadask.4931 or the bridge volume was at 8.5 when he made the reading. Which you can literally see at 4:22 in the video 👍
60's neck all day and I really dig those 61 pickups.
Very good review. The burst buckers are not as “muddy” sounding as the 61’s. I bought the 50’s in heritage cherry. It is amazing. Very articulate pickips! The neck is in fact noticeably fatter and really does fit most bigger hands, better.
Is the Gibson Les Paul Classic a less expensive version of the 60s Standard?
Which tuners are better out of the two? Thank you 🙏 tuning stability wise…
To me it's just cosmetic, I just like the vintage style. They both functioned equally in my eyes. Thanks for watching
50s gold top my choice but Im planning to upgrade pickups with Seymor Duncan Antiquity, maybe wiring out of phase like Peter Green
It tells the world, “I’m here, I’m loud, and you’re gonna listen!”
So, there you have it - the Les Paul. A guitar that’s not just an instrument, but a lifestyle choice. It’s got soul, it’s got character, and it’s got enough power to knock you on your ass. And that, my friends, is what rock 'n' roll is all about! stratvslespaul.com
I traded my Classic with a 60s style neck for a 50s Standard. The thicker neck feels so much more comfortable for me.
I have two 50s in different colours. Love them.
I’ll take a 50’s with ‘61 pickups please! Beautiful guitars both of them but I need that larger neck, the slim is just too tight for me.
The 61 Burst Buckers are my favorite Gibson pickups (as found on the 60s), even as much as I love the overall feel of the 50s
Did Gibson make a “61” Les Paul. Standard? I think they had already moved to the SG body style. Interesting they would use a “61” pickup in a guitar that wasn’t made in “61”.
Man that's a good point.If you're right.
I was pretty distracted by another 1990 Firebird hanging in the background. I notice this one is on Reverb. Probably a good move not giving this one away. Let me know if you change your mind.
Keep it up guys. Great review, as always.
I couldn’t pass it up! Lol thanks for watching 🤘
Brilliantly presented video. Thanks.
Thanks for sharing your knowledge, talent and taste!
Have the 2016 Traditional and Standard. I like the Traditional a tiny bit better
I’m on the fence between the 50’s & 60’s. I’m leaning towards the 50’s gold top but I wish I could play them first
I bought the 50s heritage cherry, someday id like to get a 60s so I say both.
What are the most common pups change on the Les paul 60 for a more aggressive tone suitable for metal?? 🤟
Or buy the 59 Standard. There are more interesting LP’s like a Special or a Custom, would not want or need two Standards. Nice comparison video, both great guitars!
My dream guitar is a 59 gold top with Tim Shaws
You're a great player, dude.👍
Thanks I appreciate that! Thanks for watching 🍻
I’d go with the 60s in Unburst. I like the slimmer neck
If you have smaller hands, you might prefer 60s neck. They're alittle thinner like Fender and PRS. I've never gotten comfortable on my 50s neck. They are alot thicker like mine acoustic guitar neck. If I would had known, I would never buy two of mine 50s. 13:33
I bought my 2020 ‘60’s on Reverb for $1600, mint, shipped-p😊❤
Man those both sound and look great !
Have you guys gotten your hands on one of the Gibson les paul faded guitars?
Yes! Gibson Faded Series SG vs. Les Paul

Thanks for watching
You and I have a vastly different definition of affordable 😂
@@OldeDog_NewTricks 18 interest free payments adding upto $2900.00 for a brand new Gibson is very attainable or save up. Costs Less than smoking a pack a day 🤔🎸...jus sayin...🤘
Love everything on 50s except the neck :) 🤘
Please, how do the necks thickness compare ? Is the 50s neck a lot thicker, like on the Les Paul Juniors ?
Which do I prefer between the '50s and '60s Les Paul Standards? Yes. Yes I do.
Do you guys sell Gibson cases with retro handle just like what came with these guitars?
The 60’s sounds like it has more mojo here but I like the chunkier neck.
Classic has the same neck as the 60's
@@urgidover Right O thanks
I love Gibson Les Paul guitars
Sounds as good as they look.
I prefer the 60s LP for the slimmer neck and sturdier Grover tuners.
Got the 50’s les Paul standard now after a 60’s to complete the duo
The 50s looked and sounded better but at the end of the day it does come down to neck profile. I have a 50's with P-90s and a 2000s 60's with humbuckers and the 60's neck is just more comfortable to me despite the 50's being my dream guitar in look and sound.
50s sounds a little darker in the low frequencies but the 60s has a nice prominent mid range, I like the 60s
I prefer the 60s for the neck shape and the Burstbuckers
Either would do very nicely
