The song is a traditional Mexican folk song. Richie Valens, who grew up in East LA and was of Mexican heritage, didn't actually know Spanish, but he learned the song phonetically and it became a huge hit. Arguably, he's the first Mexican-American rock star and the first to bring a Mexican influence into rock. He had a few hit singles before he died at age 17 in the plane crash that also killed Buddy Holly and The Big Bopper. The movie La Bamba was the story of Valens' life, Lou Diamond Phillips played the lead role, and Los Lobos (an LA band of Chicano heritage that was very big in the 80s) covered Valens' music for the film. This video contrasts scenes from the film with a performance by Los Lobos in which Phillips joins them halfway through, and the end part shows the band playing La Bamba in traditional Mexican style.

I remember seeing this movie when I was a kid back in '87. Crying my eyeballs out at the end. The song is a very old Mexican folk song. Richie Valens made it into a rock hit in the 1950s, and then died in a plane crash with Buddy Holly and The Big Bopper (The Day the Music Died). Then in '87 "La Bamba" came out, and Los Lobos redid the song for the movie along with the other Richie songs in the film. (My grade 7 music teacher taught us to sing the words because she was sick of everyone walking around going Lalalalalal Bamba and other gibberish. We're in Canada - Spanish wasn't normally taught.)

The name of the movie is the same as the song, "La Bamba." It's the true story of the singer Richie Valens, played by Lou Diamond Phillips. It's a great movie. This song was one of Richie Valens' big hits and was re-recorded by Los Lobos for this film and their cover version was also a big hit.

It's from a movie about Ritchie Valens, the guy who made the song popular in the 50s. I think the song was older than Valens, but he made it popular in the mainstream, even though most people couldn't understand what he was saying. It sounded good, and that's what matters most in music.

Los Lobos are one of the greatest American bands of the last 45 years. Incredible in concert, so many fantastic albums. I've probably seen them close to a dozen times. Often with X headlining, and they're always better than X. Listen to something original by them. They sing in English and Spanish, wonderful musicianship. The "Will the Wolf Survive?" album supplies plenty.

They played Neil Young's Cinnamon Girl and the Grateful Dead's Bertha as encores - Bertha in tribute for Gerry Garcia who had passed away that year. These guys can play anything. Check out their album " How Will The Wolf Survive". In your vid at 2:25 is Brian Setzer of The Stay Cats followed by Marshall Crenshaw (with glasses) who I believe played Buddy Holly in the movie. A long time ago I was searching for some kind of music that was deep and had some impact and I found Los Lobos! I'd suggest 'Someday', 'The Neighborhood', cover of GD 'Bertha' (David Hidalgo was one of the people talked about to replace Jerry Garcia when he passed...), 'Kiko and the Lavender Moon', 'Angel Dance' (which was covered by Robert Plant), 'Luz de Mi Vida', 'Mas y Mas!' and many more!

Lou diamond Phillips played Ritchie Valens to a T in this movie, it's worth a watch, taken too soon with Buddy Holly and the Big Bopper, the day the music died ( American Pie)...

The original song was by Ritchie Valens in the 1950s. He is one of the 3 that died in the plane crash on a small plane, following a "Rock and Roll show" as they were called in those days. Remember the great Buddy Holly and The Big Bopper died on the same plane. There was a movie made in the mid 80s, called "La Bamba" as a tribute to Ritchie Valens, as well as the others.

Title song of the movie La Bamba which was the story of singer Richie Valens who was killed in a 1959 plane crash along with fellow singers Buddy Holly and J.P. "The Big Bopper" Richardson. This has been referred to as the day the music died. This was one of Richie's hits. He was only 17 and on his way to being a superstar.

This song & video is from the 1987 movie "La Bamba" about 1950's singer & musician Ritchie Valens who recorded/covered this old Mexican folk song and played in a rock n'roll style, he had some other big hits like "Donna" and "Come on, Let's Go". At 17 years old, he died in a plane crash in 1959 along with singer songwriter & musician Buddy Holly and singer the Big Bopper.

I'm sure people have already told you about this movie. Ritchie Valens took that Mexican folk song and with his hot guitar licks transformed it. Here is a translation of the lyrics. Some of it (according to the translator) is a bit ambiguous. Close as they could come I suppose. Enjoy. To dance the Bamba,
    to dance the Bamba,
one needs a bit of grace.
A bit of grace for me, for you,
    now come on, come on,
    now come on, come on,
for you I'll be, for you I'll be, for you I'll be.
    I'm not a sailor,
    I'm not a sailor, I'm a captain.
    I'm a captain, I'm a captain.
    Bamba, bamba,
    bamba, bamba,
    bamba, bamba, bam...
    To dance the Bamba,
    to dance the Bamba,
one needs a bit of grace.
A bit of grace for me, for you,
    now come on, come on.
    Rrrraa-ha-haa...
    To dance the Bamba,
    to dance the Bamba,
one needs a bit of grace.
A bit of grace for me, for you,
    now come on, come on,
    now come on, come on,
for you I'll be, for you I'll be, for you I'll be.
    Bamba, bamba,
    bamba, bamba,
    bamba, bamba...

Just came from our local Walmart here in Sebring Florida,. I was wearing my Metallica shirt (I'm 65 this year) and was in the same isle with a mother and daughter,. when the daughter said "Cool shirt,. I love Metallica". Mom said she was proud of her for loving the old school bands that we knew starting back in the 80's and I told them about my pirate FM metal radio station that I ran for a couple of decades and then we got to talking about watching reaction videos and how much of a joy it was to see metal being introduced to those who normally would have never really given it a listen before and then the daughter says "Yea we watch one couple Brad and Lex". I was like YES! I watch them all the time too! We talked about loving your metal reactions and how LEX was the metal head of the couple,. lolol. But that we enjoyed your reaction videos. This is coming from two families that just ran into each other in the little farm town of Sebring Florida,. and both loved watching YOUR metal reactions. I KNOW THIS IS NOT A METAL REACTION VIDEO but I wanted to leave this comment on it since it is your latest reaction vid and say HI to the mom and daughter couple that I met in Walmart if they are watching! :) SMALL WORLD! And you guys,. BRAD AND LEX are rock stars even in the smallest towns across the USA.

That movie was La Bamba, with Lou Diamond Phillips playing Richie Valenz, an up and coming mega star who sang this song and Oh Donna, he was killed in a plane crash when he was very young, he was bad ass as you can hear on this song as he was able to flush all the hispanic guitar influences into a rock song, this is one of my all time favorite covers by a band, I think Los Lobos not only did a great service to this remake but perhaps did it even a little better then the original, that dont happen much
