Wow, lucky you took the axles out and found these bearings and axle problem before something bad happened. Looks like the axle swap is the way to fly. Nice job Buddie
I don’t know why but I love the idea of clad welding. It’s something you’ve done before on the channel and I’d never heard of such a thing…better than sliced bread. 😊
No worries, He didn't even know it was messed up!! Sh!t happens, he probably would have bought me a new one, we chased the threads and everything is fine!!☻
I like the new shifter, looks great. Lately all the "simple" jobs I've done have turned from bad to worse. Something in the air I guess, lol. Hope you have better luck with the axles.
The grinder cutting the retainer....done that many times and it always work...... what did we do before these grinder and cutoff blades came out....No tools to lend around hear and that retainer ring really looks like a bush league fix ....good one....CHEERS
I think the shifter looks great. I hate loaning out tools and it really depends on who it is some people I know I will not loan them anything because I know it want be the same when they bring it back. I am so glad you pulled the axles and found all these problems. I'M like you I have never seen a bearing crack like that before either.
RK with no pistons? Let me check to see if I'm awake! Maybe a Woody Woodpecker with a Cigar in his mouth? LOL, love the "Two-Tone" pain color (some things never change). Stay warm up there!
Well dad gummit Mike had a fantastic idea on the clad welding and putting it on the lath. That is it sounded like it was his idea. Axels came out ok but one was a bit stubborn. Great job and looking forward to the temporary repair and getting the truck on the road. Thanks for the video's.
I like the shifter. The steering column would look good painted turquoise too. An axle swap would be easy, plus you could get one with a ratio you may prefer over the one that's in the truck now.
Getting a whole new axle will be good, as I'd be concerned whether the main housing was still good where those bearings ride and fixing that would be a nightmare. Nice that you can fix it enough to keep it rolling for now though!
I have a 71 f100 4x4 shortbox & I had a axle walk out on me so I put a new bearing on & it did it again in like 20 miles. So I bought another bearing & put it on & I think I only got 10 miles on that one. So I put the axle on the bench and spun it & ever so small I could see a wobble. It was bent. So knowing I need a new axle but didn't have one I welded the retaining ring on just so I could get by until I got a new axle. But I didn't slobber weld it on like that one. I put 4 solid tachs around it and was good. Never had a problem since. Just now getting around to ordering axles & that was 4 yrs ago!
Thanks for the update video, Road King. I like the turquoise shifter too. About the axle, is that 5 lug pattern stock on a Ford? I ask because all the GM axles, at that time, were 6 lug. Makes me wonder if your truck already has a later swapped in axle.
Like the shifter RK. It is awful to tear into a simple task of replacing a wheel bearing only to find a hatchet mechanic has been there before. I just wonder what the differential looks like inside. A later model rear end might be the best choice.
4 wheel disk is the way to go ! Don’t they make a conversion kit for that ? Pirate Jacks DBK9LXR - ford 9” complete conversion rear $375.71 . Just thought I’d mention it !
A rear axle assembly out of a late model Ford Explorer such as 2003 Ford Explorer Rear Axle Assembly (Sport package), 3.73 ratio; may be the affordable ticket here.
Depends on the weather what we work on right now!! That was a nice day and it should have taken an hour or two!! The donor truck is gone, that had a heavy duty 6 or 8 lug 456 in it!!☻
Holey crap, how hot does a bearing need to get before it cracks like that? I get people trying to band aid stuff, but they should have told the next owner.
You do not know what you are going to find, until you take it apart. Who would go thru the trouble to weld the retainer, instead of just replacing it and doing it correctly? I think I would just repair your axles and put in the new bearings and seals. Then you know what you have is repaired correctly. Those drum brakes will work just fine, for another 80 years. I wish you and your family a wonderful new year. That trunk is going to be quite the driver when your finished. I think it will end up show car quality at least. You seem to exhibit a high standard when it comes to repairs.
That's a scary sight to see with the bearing just sloppy on the axle shaft like that. I did the 9" in my galaxie a few months ago and those bearings pressed on so tight they were jumping and squaking going on, same with the retaining ring using sunnen pressing lubricant to boot. I got the retaining rings off of mine with just a chisel, beat a groove into one side, go to the other side and beat another groove into it then it looses tension and it would walk it's way off, I had to cut the old bearings off of mine. Not a very fun job.
A lot of times you can take a chisel and make a good mark on the retaining ring. Then just keep moving around the ring making marks. It will expand the retainer and it will come off.
Let me tell you a Worse horror story I worked fr a company and rode in their Ford 1 ton many miles Later that year they sold it to a welding shop The guy showed me where they put in new front wheel bearings Pounded the inner bearings on with a sledge hammer Then welded the nuts to the spindle shaft What he told me was the metal could have crystalized and snapped off The Disc brake caliper may have kept a wheel from flying off or not
Ya know, after looking at those axles, I'd pull that pumpkin just to check everything else. Just goes to show you that some people have no business working on mechanical things....
That would be the right thing to do but I'm afraid to!! I'm gonna change the gear oil and hope for the best!! If I hear something I might not have a choice!!☻
That's why I like GMC over a ford. Im saying this at the same time have a Ford in my driveway. They make a sleeve that you use red lock tite and a sleeve you tap on to fix that axle. Had to fix a few in my life. Glad you found it before. Tire and axle come off . truck slams to the pavement . you loose your brakes but you do come to a stop from dragging your rear end and bumper. Every ford i have owned ones a year I jack the back tires off the ground grab the tires and see if i get up down an in an out slop. If does. Time to fix. I don't know why I keep buying Fords. 😂
The looks so beautiful thanks for sharing.
The clad weld fix will make a good video!
Nah no video Bud!! Mike did that by himself, we were able to get down there to get a little video of pressing the bearings on!!☻
@@805ROADKING I'm glad Mike was able to save those axles!
Good thing you pulled it apart RK, I think you should be able to find some axles in good shape. At a decent price, good luck Buddy👍
Thanks Bud!!☻
I was asking the whole time; "Where's Mike when ya need him?" LOL
Mike's always there when I need Him!!☻
Wow, lucky you took the axles out and found these bearings and axle problem before something bad happened. Looks like the axle swap is the way to fly. Nice job Buddie
Thanks Bud!! We fixed it, but if we come across a good disc axle we're gonna pick it up!!☻
I don’t know why but I love the idea of clad welding. It’s something you’ve done before on the channel and I’d never heard of such a thing…better than sliced bread. 😊
Mike would have preferred to throw the whole rear out and replace it with a newer disc set up but he fixed us up till we find one!!☻
Mike to the rescue! Everybody needs a Mike!
Yeah Buddy!!☻
Always great to see Mike
Yeah Buddy!!☻
Great work buddy! Thanks for sharing
It is a shame a man cannot trust a friend to return a tool.
Not damaged. I like the way you called out the person who damaged the threads.

Everything turns into a project on this truck!
It's crazy ain't it!!☻

Yeah we plan on painting the column turq, we just haven't gotten there yet!!☺
Shift lever looks great and so does the knob. To bad about the axles but between you and Mike you will get them fixed.
Thanks Larry!! Mike fixed the axles up for us, we just have to install them now!!☻
Merry Christmas! =D Great stuff! Looking forward to the clad welding? Is that like spray welding? Thanks!
Thanks Bud!! Clad welding is something you can do at home, just run some parallel beads and cut them down on the lathe!!
The file is your friend, cracked and welded bearings wow never seen that before either buddy, hello mike :o)

Thanks Greg!! The five lug is standard for the F100 and I think the F150, The F250 and bigger are 6 lug!!☺
I'll bet the welded axle walked out at one time...The sloppy one would have done it too eventually...Disc rear...Great idea.!
I can only imagine some of the stuff you come across on a daily basis!!☻
If you have the shift pattern memorized an 8 ball would be cool. But, I like the white shifter with the turquoise!
Never seen that on an axle.. nuffa dis!
Whoever worked on that didnt care enough. When its fixed right it feels right.
It's always something with old iron!
Will you need a different brake master cylinder for the disc brake swap?
Nah, but maybe a proportioning valve!!☻
Blimey Roady, what a horror show. I look forward to seeing it repaired and all back together. Mike it, Mike. All the best, Mart.

Bearing got hot and spun, sometimes you can dimple the axle shaft to restore the press fit of the bearing
Yeah that was my first thought, that was way beyond dimples!!☻
Thanks Buddy!!☻
Worst case, if you can't come up with replacement axles, you could have yours spray welded and re-machined.

If you heat the bearing with a torch and hit the end of the shaft, the bearing will break in half and fall right off.
How about the donor truck, can you use those.
