On The Hunt For Zine Subjects + Why You Need To Create One

  • In this episode, I'm exploring my hometown with my Polaroid Land Camera and a pack of Fuji FP-100c, in search of potential zine subjects. After recently wrapping production on my first zine, I really wanted to make a video talking about why I think everyone needs to make one, and also to remind anyone who is struggling creatively that there are images and stories waiting to be found everywhere, you just need to get out and look for them.

Having a printed outcome like a zine or a photobook is much more rewarding than fussing about the resolution of the latest camera. You can make great books on any format and style of camera, because the turning pages tell the story. Computer screens and the x200 button are turning photography into a technical novelty, instead of the creative medium it always was.

Actually, dude, I really like the “mistake” one at 5:53, it’s got an abstract quality to it and the color palette is pretty cool. I’ve learned to embrace the accidents because sometimes what first appears no good actually says something more, and sometimes better, than what you originally intended. Like your stuff.

I have a Polaroid camera like yours, but I was under the impression that batteries for them were not made anymore, thus rendering the camera as useless. How do you get yours to work and what type of film do you use with it? I used Polaroid 669 back in the day, but that is long gone.

Love the idea of doing a zine, but feel you need to have an audience to get that zine out too, and building an audience is not easy. Is the only way to get that audience via Instagram and UA-cam? You should have called it 'The Parallax View'. Laughed almost until I cried. At least I'm not the only one that knows exactly what I'm doing wrong....and then goes and does it all again. How many times have I left the lens cap on?
I've also got a 250 Land camera paperweight, has your film stock run out yet?
I subscribe to another Canadian 'Azriel Knight'...is the whole of Canada one big ghost town? I think its something to do with Scottish descendants. Let's find somewhere abandoned and then photograph it so it looks even more bleak.

Could I do a zine of images that I just like for example not just a specific subject matter?

You can do whatever you want. But a theme is always nice to tie everything together.
