People, remember the Darmstadt machine only tests abrasion on a "calibrated concrete block" that is smoother than most asphalt or chip+seal surfaces, with a (IIRC) 4cm drop. While the RPM might "math-out" to 45/70/120kph, Darmstadt and EN17092 does not make for a good abrasion testing standard. EN13595 (Cambridge), the older standard, was lobbied away/discontinued (depending on who you ask) because it was too tough to pass, and it replicated asphalt better, with 60 grit sandpaper. A simple look at Australian govt's MotoCAP testing (again, Cambridge) shows many AA/AAA fabrics having abysmal abrasion resistance, mainly textiles. This also doesn't cover the fall + slide mechanics of motorcycle crashes. Many low-tenacity textiles burst or rip open from the initial impact, exposing the meat underneath. No standard has included drop + abrasion (yet), but Darmstadt CANNOT test for it, while Cambridge can. In short: Ryan, saying AA/AAA equals a "rolling speed" is, IMO, a sign you should read up on those standards (and the associated physics) more. For all others, keep in mind your moto clothing is a very good step in the right direction for protection, but bringing EN13595 back is the best way we could get ratings that actually show how protective our gear is against sliding, instead of the current "smoke and mirrors" 17092.
I tend to agree with your comments - sadly the standards are never going back to EN13595 any time soon ( it suits way too many manufacturers to leave alone ) keep in mind that it was a voluntary standard at first the complaints came when it was made mandatory, which generally means easement. Australia bought into the EN13595 standard that existed at that time 2012??? if they had waited they might be saddled with EN17092 as well - but change costs. It is good to have the comparison. The UK government has an ideal opportunity to alter/ revise the standard in the UK - they won`t it costs to much and requires a will that is lacking at the moment. 1984 - 2024 40 years have passed and we appear to be going backwards for the next generation of motorcyclists protection!!!!

Comfort is pretty important. Layering is great, but it can be hard to layers right to retain system comfortable e.g. your outer layer has to be big enough to enclose everything you're packing underneath, so you should generally size up there (not excessively so) and work backwards.

IIRC, one of the criticisms of the EU rating system is that you have to declare which test you want to pass before you take it. If you say AA and only pass A, you get nothing. The vents on the face shield are not for clearing fog from the face shield. If you open the face shield, you'll see small ducts behind where these vents sit. To my knowledge, those vents are guided toward your temples since there are a lot of veins close to the skin there, which enhances the body-cooling effect of the ventilation. This was implemented on Arai helmets to avoid drilling holes in the forehead of the helmet for ventilation, because the forehead is a high risk impact area and holes in the shell at the forehead reduce safety.

Great video again, I have just bought an Arai XD4. The latest helmets obey the EC directive 22.06 which requires great shell thickness = more weight. As Arai already tested helmets to their own standards and they fit me well 22.05 is good enough for me!
The Oxford machine is actually preferred because the surface type is closer to chip seal roads versus smooth concrete. Unless you’re riding in the city most of us will crash on chip seal. Not asphalt.
Oh, and about abrasion resistant garments; Motoport Kevlar. Stiff when new, but worn in are great. I've gone down in the Aero Mesh II's jacket/pant combo and the Kevlar barely showed any marring at all. Only a slight scuff at the initial impact point, and no sign of the long slide I took when I went down in Italy on a tour. Unmarked, and unhurt. Yes, the armor was in place. Aero Mesh with waterproof base under is the bomb down to temperatures I would switch to ski gear and go skiing.
a word of caution about Vancouverites: whenever they imply that Vancouver gets a lot of rain, what they really mean, is that Vancouver gets a lot of rainy days (during the winter). What they don't say, is that while it rains all day, it BARELY rains. They usually get some thin and slow rain. Therefore waterproof stuff might actually work there. In places where you get heavy rain for a few hours before a clearing, it never does for more than a few minutes. Cheers
In case anyone was wondering, those pants, hoodie, boots, and helmet are going to set you back $1,962, before taxes. After taxes, that's $2100 worth of gear.

Packing will be interesting! Still debating on a hammock or tent for sleeping. This video was timed pretty well for me lol.
I bought an XD4 a month or so ago. It was a bit too warm for my first off-road trip and the speakers weren't in quite right so I couldn't hear music. The lid was very quiet though. Even with goggles. I used it on the road last week and there was zero lift from the peak and the road noise was minimal. Even up 100mph. Redid the speakers and they were far better. The padding is just too thick for loud music but that's a plus in reality I guess.
Way to go . Last time was a challenge to do better and innovate padding, this weeks to be clearer and more precise understanding of what you get . Keep it up. As a new rider, and newbie to motorcycle life, it would be helpful
Hello Ryan, i am following your channel for anything motocycle related, without owning a bike (but wanting to). Now that i got my licence, i am looking at gear. And it is steep learning curve. I feel like any gear is so hard to choose. The fit, the quality. Its so hard and time consuming. I just read up on jacket tests. And well i think (correct me if i am wrong). A rated jacket, does not require any abrasion rating in zone 3. To me it seems that if you slide in not the most statistically best way you can be fucked as the garment will disintegrate before giving any protection. This can be remedied by choosing garments, that have the same material and same reinforcements in it entirety. But next thing is super scary, EC 17902 apparently doesnt test for initial impact resistance of the fabric. So garment could be torn to pieces on initial hit, offering no protection because of it, despite ratings. It would slide well, if you get to that, but no one really knows, apparently. Or is it that i am looking too much into this????
Breaks my heart that the XD4 is being discontinued. I only discovered it less than a year ago and it's by far the best helmet I've ever owned, even on the street.
I got mine a few months ago. I'm considering buying a second one for when I need to replace this one so I don't have to worry about what my next helmet will be. I love my xd4 and it's sad that the xd5 is worse. I just dont like it especially the sun peak design.
With 25y experience in mototsport/automotive engineering, I couldn't agree more with your intent of making motorbiker garment protection's rating easier to read. A lot could be done in that direction instead of sterile letter coding such as B, A, AA and so on. I hope your attempts of making riding safer are getting some traction. How can I/we all help?
How can you help? If you live in the European Union or United Kingdom, contact your national standards body and apply to join its motorcycle clothing standards committee so you can formulate national policy that is then routed to the European Standards committee (to which you should request your national standards committee nominates you as a delegate). More rider representation is not only a good thing, it is essential! The displays of indignation that appeared in the comments to Ryan’s impact protector video need to be channelled constructively. Get off your keyboards and into the committees! 😉

I wasn’t ready for the Brazilian music during the hoodie review but I am here for it! 😂
Ryan great vid, only thing is that REV'IT! is still situated in The Netherland hereby Dutch ;) 4:07
I mean it's just extreme Northern Belgium right?

Guys, I'm getting a entry level bike soon thats somewhat capable offroad, I'm really excited about what I can do with it, and needless to say, Ryan had a great influence on my decisions.....love the content man, much love
What bike?
I saw the motorized bike video a few years ago, and that made me build one myself. Then I bought an old 2 stroke motorcycle a few months later.
Welcome to the fold!🤝
Actually guys, a decision was made, I'm not getting the offroad capable bike (Hero Xpulse 200 4v (India)) Im getting the Yamaha R15 V4, also a 150cc entry level sports bike, but one day, surely, I want to own a offroad capable bike, Im still 20 yo btw, so, safe to say I still have a lot of time
Should be getting like a 400.
2:44 I was 5 seconds away from falling asleep and jolted awake 😂 had to rewind to make sure I heard it right 💀
hadn't really thought of it but an actual speed rating would be a game changer in terms of consumer usefulness
@@pamvarnsverry2444 yes I did mean the Cambridge test. And preferred by me at the very least.

Studio decor looks really good, team F9 🤍🤍
Oh, and about abrasion resistant garments; Motoport Kevlar. Stiff when new, but worn in are great. I've gone down in the Aero Mesh II's jacket/pant combo and the Kevlar barely showed any marring at all. Only a slight scuff at the initial impact point, and no sign of the long slide I took when I went down in Italy on a tour. Unmarked, and unhurt. Yes, the armor was in place. Aero Mesh with waterproof base under is the bomb down to temperatures I would switch to ski gear and go skiing.
So agree about simplifying safety ratings.👍
Okay I think the best part of the gear review was how it held his massive manhood. I’m buying 12 of them.
a word of caution about Vancouverites: whenever they imply that Vancouver gets a lot of rain, what they really mean, is that Vancouver gets a lot of rainy days (during the winter). What they don't say, is that while it rains all day, it BARELY rains. They usually get some thin and slow rain. Therefore waterproof stuff might actually work there. In places where you get heavy rain for a few hours before a clearing, it never does for more than a few minutes. Cheers
my eye is on the pando moto ce level AAA base layers that also have ce level 2 pads....wear that under whatever you want.
Still the best in the industry, and accomplished with normal eyebrows, no cloning, and zero butt-kissing.
Perfect.
He gained 20 inches in his chest just in one video. What is his gym routine..LOL
His dry dead pan is worth the sub!

In case anyone was wondering, those pants, hoodie, boots, and helmet are going to set you back $1,962, before taxes. After taxes, that's $2100 worth of gear.
Best 13 seconds of video ever!
It was 10 inches of video.
It was 10 inches of video!
Could not love how honest Ryan and co. does these videos infomercials any more 😂❤
i like your videos and your vibe. its great, very high quality. my opinion on videos like these "best something" - is low quality, why?
1. its temporary
2. its consumeristic
3. it has no spirit
even though its still entertaining, very high quality and takes a lot of work. it just doesn't have substance like your other videos. thanks for reading everyone
I just got done going through what few sockets and tools Ill need for a one night moto camping trip. Keeping it minimal. I have Tusk Traverse panners with a tail bag Ill be using for everything. Packing will be interesting! Still debating on a hammock or tent for sleeping. This video was timed pretty well for me lol.
The way this videos are made is fantastic ! 👍🏼
Finally! Been waiting all day for the Saturday video lol.
Thanks, Ryan.
Really enjoyed this video and any other you make, but i gotta be honest. The motorcycle reviews is the best and most liked in my opinion.
1month ago i bought the gaerne pro tech boots and the arai tour x4, it wasn’t a cheap month but i’m glad you agree with the choice!
Way to go . Last time was a challenge to do better and innovate padding, this weeks to be clearer and more precise understanding of what you get . Keep it up. As a new rider, and newbie to motorcycle life, it would be helpful
'Convolution sucks'. Brilliant and straight to the point.
Love the commercial!
You actually explained/demonstrated why I should care.
If I wasn't waiting for my ecu back I would have taken your advice Ryan! The friend we all need
2:43 thanks for the measurements
Completely caught me off guard to be like “did I just hear that right?…. Yup I did” 😂
And this is why I love this channel.
I watch your videos the samw way people read on the toilet if and when convenient I likes this because of Ryan's final comment . Liked and commented to help your reach because your video was honest
Milwaukee heated jacket. My favorite gear purchase I have made.
You bet, got one for Christmas. Works great.
Not even close to being warm enough. I bought one and returned it the next day. No abrasion protection whatsoever.
Heated mid layers and you can wear whatever jacket you want.
Did I hear you correctly, that you’d wear the Helite Backpack airbag UNDERNEATH the anorak?
You Make Motorcycling Fun, Man! Thank You.
Yeah, without Ryan, motorcycling would be boring drudgery.
I disagree with almost everything you say in this video, but you're so good saying it that I enjoyed this video a lot😂
