Iberian horses crossed with the American Quarter horse make an amazing working breed. Called an Azteca. Have the beautiful confirmation and gait of the Iberian and the extra gear of the quarter horse

Agree 100%. Also, I could tell you originally typed “conformation” but autocorrect changed it to “confirmation” which made me laugh at the mental image of some kind of ceremony where horses are “confirmed.”

That's working equitation and therefore dressage of its finest. You can see plenty of the higher dressage lessons while they work with the cows. None of them are "just for show" and they know exactly what they are doing and why they are doing it. Dressage riders tend to forget it because they can't quite visualise the practical use of all the pretty looking lessons they are riding (and teachers fail to teach it because they also don't have the practical knowledge)pretty-looking

It seems, for me,that you're not happy with "the bright side" of life. Do you rather see the miserable side ? That's what you can see day in day out from the "news" media.

The lusitanos can live in hotter climates, since here in Portugal it gets to 40°c in the summer sometimes but they do live better in a more temperate climate

If you are reporting on the lusitano why show the Spanish vaquero? The tradition is completely different with distinctive saddles and uniforms! You could have reported on the Portuguese working equitation, campinos or the Portuguese school of the equestrian art. What a shame such a nice idea is wasted on showing the Spanish style which should be for Andalusian horses!

E viva Portugal!

shame they treat them appallingly. . . yes, I worked with them in Spain and the stallions are kept in tiny areas of dust (no grass) and stand there alone. Welfare standards are terrible ... all machismo. Matt Harnacke saw it when he went out there to buy his horses.

    • @Klugschieterin

You absolutely can't compare Spain with Portugal
It's apparently a totally different climate and nature 😉 a different breed of cattle a completely different way to handle horses, a completely different culture and most important a completely different character of the people
55 ys ago my grandpa gave me my first horseback riding lessons in Portugal on an experienced working Lusitan when we were on vacation
On the way back from Portugal to Germany the lessons were continued in Andalusia (Spain) on a Tres Sanges and an Andaluz and i experienced a total different character of horses, saddle and handling of the horses
May be nowadays all the mediterranean way of working horseback art looks similar, but has completely different roots based on the character, mentality and culture of the people
The traditional way of keeping horses looks for so many people cruel today, but never forget, that's what imprints the typical characteristics and health of a breed in a certain environment. To ignore that is the cruelty of today's activists for animal rights
