Always want one dissenter to create a good conversation.
Any old school hockey follower loved Cherry.
Unfortunately Cherry's best before date expired 10+ yrs ago, Biz captured it better than most.
Can't be on his pedestal and get away with that kind of xenophobic rhetoric
Cherry was inevitably gonna go down.....he likely regrets going down on the relatively lame comments by his standards......kudos to Sportsnet for having the balls to do the right thing..... Cherry likely wished he'd gone down in bigger flames
Kinda reminds us of Trump and his rhetoric.......not good for the US or Canada!!!

I don't think this was balanced at all. These were extremely basic and ignorant points. A thorough review of the topic would include, for example, the work of Robert Putnam et al from Harvard University on Social Capital, historic rates of immigration, migration sources, historic composition of countries, the definition of a nation, and, yes, even genetics. No-one said it would be comfortable. The truth rarely is.
This was just pablum from guys attempting to position themselves for Sportsnet jobs. Sportsnet made a clear statement of what it's official ideology is. Note the word ideology. That's different from truth.
Cherry should educate himself more on the topic before spouting off his mouth, but he's aware there is an issue. Toronto's crime rate has been consistently and dramatically over historical averages from 1900-1960 for decades now. What's the difference? If it is migration, which is an honest point of discussion, the people that are affected by the higher rates (the old stock who are the victims in this case) deserve an answer. There should be no limits to the questions asked.

It’s also a fact that for the last few years, it’s sort of common understanding that he’s the butt end of jokes. We loved him and looked forward to his commentary but took it serious maybe 1 out of 20 times...

In this instance, he said "you people come here, and enjoy our milk and honey." He was talking about brown/black/Asian immigrants was way too general. I still like Cherry, I don't believe he's racist, but he went over the line by pinning this disrespect and unappreciatiation on minorities. How insensitive do you want people to be???

It didn't warrant a firing offense. However, he did single out immigrants and newcomers when he said you people come here and enjoy our way of life. I'm a huge Don Cherry fan, but I was a newcomer too and I always wear my poppy. Infact, many of my Caucasian friends do not wear poppies. Was I offended? No, I'm not a leftie, but I was disappointed that he singled us out. Don has had interviews in the past where he clearly showed he was anti-immigration and pretty xenophobic (prejudiced against people from other countries), so this is nothing new from him. I think everyone should be wearing poppies, including Canadian-born people. Go to any University or government building in a major city and you'll see how many people don't wear poppies. As Biz said, Don is speaking from a Toronto context too so some people took demographic fact that many Indians, Pakis and Somalians are around there and formed their own conclusions about race. Now this I disagree with, the man is no racist, he's offended Swedes and Russians more than any other group. He's just a xenophobe.

I also liked how Biz talked about just because someone is not wearing a poppy doesn't mean they don't respect those who gave up their lives for our freedom. A lot of immigrants coming from India, especially in the Punjab region come from military families, if it wasn't their grandfathers fighting in WW1 or 2 it was their grandfathers brother fighting side by side with Canadians, so I highly doubt the absence means they're being disrespectful. I feel like if Don took an approach on informing new people about wearing poppies would it have been a lot better. Instead he chose a phrase the singles people out. We open our arms to immigrants. I am a supporter. As I am sure Don Cherry is. He just stood up out of respect for our veterans. Who made our country free.

I'm a former immigrant (east Africa) and my family are very proud Canadians. I almost got into a fight with a Caucasian kid in high school because he refused to stand for the anthem while arguing with the teacher. My family always wears poppies. Go to any uni campus and government building and you will see countless Caucasians who don't wear poppies. I was a big Cherry fan, but he went over the line by saying "you people come here and enjoy our milk and honey" before explaining how these people do not appreciate "our" ways. In another interview, he even said he wished he didn't infer blame on just immigrants, and rather on all people who don't wear poppies. I like Don Cherry too, and I don't believe he's racist, but he stepped over the line. All these years my family respected the Canadian customs and traditions, and yet it's us who get called out for not appreciating Canadian culture? This is not a reflection on how Don used it, one way or another, just calling out the double standard around the phrase itself. In this very video they used the phrase (or some variation of it, “these people”, “them people”) at least once or twice.

another thing, mt grandpa was a hockey player. hes in the hockey hall of fame as the captain of the Galt Hornets seniors. Hes about the same age as Cherry and I never thought of this until just now. He would say stuff that today would seem racist, but I spent a lot of time with the man, and he wasnt racist at all. I guess the best way to put it is, his language definately put ppl into groups, but he didnt have anything against them.

Cherry wasn't racist. The right word for him is xenophobic and ethnocentric.

check out Jess Allens view on Don Cherry talk about double standard

    • @js8805
      @js8805 4 роки тому

That's not a double-standard. Jess Allen works for CTV, that is owned by Bell. Cherry worked for Sportsnet, that is owned by Rogers.
If they both had the same employer and Cherry got fired but Allen didn't (ignoring all of Cherry's history) then you would have a double-standard.
This is a different standard by different companies/employers.

      Jeff Slo
The double standard is that all those whiney cunts who cryed about cherry, are very silent after what Jess Allen said. “You immigrants should buy poppies too” is alot different then “ anyone associated with hockey is a white privilege bully and troglodyte. What she said is much more rude and offensive. She literally degraded an entire population, Don Cherry didnt do that.
