  • Don Cherry spoke Tuesday about his firing from "Coach's Corner" following a controversial rant on Saturday night, defending his comments about new immigrants not wearing poppies, but said he would have "used different words."
During the interview, he said had he been able to appear on-air on Nov. 16, he would've said, "I wish I had said 'everybody' instead of 'you people.'"
Pressed about his comments, Cherry said his comments weren't directed at minorities, and that what he said applies to anyone.

Calling people racist for stuff like this is getting so old and overused. Nothing about what he said was racist; an immigrant isn’t limited to a specific race.

The majority of new immigrants to Canada are non-white. He may not have had racist intent, but his comments were hurtful toward primarily non-whites. Therefore it's reasonable to view his comments as racist.

@T R Canadians born and raised in the city don't know vets and don't wear poppies which I've been told by a Canadian veteran who believes if white Canadians want "everyone" to purchase and wear a poppy they should be taught the history and be included socially before 'they' are ostracized for not buying a poppy because they contribute just as much. Should he have been fired? No, because everyone should be educated on the poppy, everyone should be educated on why his choice of words was uncalled for, his comments seemed racist because of the current space we are in (i.e. Trump and his blatantly racist base and actions). This should have been addressed and discussed publicly because it seems like he isn't racist and he claims he wasn't targeting non-white immigrants in his statement. I agree he shouldn't have been fired because it sets a bad precedent and people need to discuss things before they jump the gun and say: "he's racist, time to boycott" causing the network to panic and fire him. But it wrong to uneducated people on the history and expect them to blindly support what you want them to, and to do so forcefully.

@@seanhurley4003 The problem with that is that Canadians and Americans go to other parts of the world and still expect people to cater to them instead of integrating into their culture. When North Americans tour Europe they expect people to speak english and sell them food/items that are familiar to them and not of that culture. Another aspect of your hypocrisy is that if you were to go to another country - lets say China - and live there for a month. Would you wear Chinese national pride items to celebrate one of their holidays?Probably not right? I wouldn't either. And why should they expect you to? You are not from their country nor do you share their culture or experience.
You might say "He wasn't talking about immigrants" (which is also what he said in this clip) but I think what ended his career is because he said the words "you people who come here" and no one would say "come here" if they were talking about natives. We all know he meant immigrants and now we all know he's bigoted and nationalistic.

I actually took Cherries comments as reenforcment to show respect for the culture I live in. Immigrants in Canada can do as they wish, but I see nothing wrong with Cherry saying they should at least buy a poppy (re Free Speech). I think it's a good reminder for myself as well, since I can't say I've bought or even worn too many poppies in my life. Just cause I haven't done it much, doesn't I shouldn't, and there's nothing wrong with a reminder from someone like Cherry. To fire him for that. Utter nonsense.

@@seanhurley4003 I see what you're saying for sure. I am an American citizen and have lived in the middle east almost my entire life. However I still believe that saying "you people who come here" is divisive and instigates an us-and-them mentality. It's also disrespectful because he said "you people love our way of life and our milk and honey" which goes beyond just wanting people to buy a poppy and communicates a sense of anger and nonacceptance. For a country of immigrants this is not an acceptable way to speak for anyone. Since he didn't apologize I completely understand why he was fired. Also Canada doesn't believe in freedom of speech (see section 1 of the charter of rights and freedoms) but even if they did it would be totally fine for a news agency to decide someone is using hate speech and that he or she should be fired. That obviously wouldn't mean their freedom of speech would be jeopardized as they would have to face no legal fine or punishment.

@300096586 i understand the need to want to defend someone when the media is out on a witchhunt. but more and more it seems like people use the fact that the media sometimes does misrepresent someone to accuse them of this EVERYTIME someone says something terrible. And most often it's to excuse actual bad ideas and statements that are at least tone deaf and at most blatantly xenophobic/racist. I did listen to the entire rant. Let me write it out for you:
You know, I was talking to a veteran and i said, "I'm not gonna run the poppy thing anymore. 'Cause what's the sense? I live in Mississauga, nobody wears-very few people wear the poppy. Downtown Toronto, forget downtown Toronto, nobody wears the poppy. And I'm not gonna-"
He says, "Wait a minute. How about wearing it for the people that buy them?" Now you go to the small cities and you know those- the rows on rows-You people love- They come here. Whatever it is. You love our way of life. You love our milk and honey. At least you can pay a couple of bucks for poppies or something like that. These guys pay for your way of life that you enjoy in Canada. These guys paid the biggest price.
The "you people" part of the statement is the bad part. No one would be talking about this if he had just said everything BEFORE that. You saying the media is just misrepresenting him is a total lie. If he wasn't accusing a specific group of people no one would be talking about it. But he said "You people love-- They come here. Whatever it is. You love our way of life. You love our milk and honey." He is saying the immigrants that come here for a better life owe it to soldiers to buy a poppy for however much it is and wear it on remembrance day. He is specifically using words like they, you and our to separate immigrants from what he views as canadians. His rant is telling because he focused on one group of people. And you have to question why someone does that when he could've easily said that canadian citizens and new immigrants alike need to wear the poppy out of respect. that would've been true. but he decided to focus on the people he has the most vitriol towards.

Oh, god I never thought about it like that jeez. Don is amazing I loved Coaches Corner. He did have a point, that people should be buying poppies to pay respect, but the way it came out was wrong. We also have to remember that this is an 85 year old man. He is getting to a point where, with old people that they begin to forget things like words, for example he was looking for words before he commented “You people”. You also need to remember that he was raised in a different era. Yes his words came out racist, yes he said those words when he shouldn’t have. I would like to think this is minor, a mere man but I forget that he said this to a million viewers... I would like to point out neither side was right. Yes people should buy poppies, yes his words were racist, yes he technically has the right of free speech, yes he insulted the veterans of different heritage, race, ethnicity. I don’t think he should be able to hide behind the status of elderly and he isn’t which makes me happy but he should be a little more cautious and mind himself. We should respect the point he tried to make and the point that it came out offensive and racist. Both sides are right and I think we should work towards both aspects of equality and respect.
If only he had said “Everybody” instead of “You People”. I loved Coaches Corner...

But that word is used way to loosely now to state the fact that someone doesn't agree with statement someone made. But stating that people who live here should be wearing a poppy isn't racism. It's true we all should remember the fallen. Should he have used something other that l than "you people" of course because of the fact of you can take it two ways. Isn't it interesting how just saying "you people" can end a career? Cherry's actual point was that everybody in Canada should wear a poppy on Remembrance Day in respect for those who fought, and many died in service for their country. So, if Cherry had just said "everybody" instead of "you people" he would still be employed. You would have thought he just said "f you ____ {insert specific ethnic group}" but he didn't, and never meant to single anyone out.
