Ducati Multistrada 950 S quick review [RAW Onboard]

- I promised my English speaking viewers a short written review about this bike since I unfortunately don't have enough time to translate the big ass German Multistrada 950 review I uploaded recently. So. Here we go :)
This is the bike. For now I have a new favourite to answer the infamous 'Which bike would you get if you could only get one' - question with. It's the Ducati Multistrada 950 S!
Ever since I rode the 1200 Multistrada Enduro 4 years ago I fell in love with the Multis. Mostly for their looks. To my eyes they are the most beautiful travel/adventure bikes out there. Unfortunately my extended tour with the 1260 S in the summer of 2019 was a bit of a disappointment. I basically loved everything about the big one except for the most important department: suspension. The 1260 didn't satisfy me when it came to quicker riding. Its suspension simply couldn't handle quick changes of direction. It started to bounce slightly. With loaded panniers it was bouncing rather heavily actually.
So obviously I was very curious about the 950. Although my hopes were not up too high because when looking at the spec sheet you'll notice that the 1260 and the 950 are very similar. Most of their components are the same and the smaller one weighs just 5kg less. So I thought there wouldn't be a big difference in performance...boy was I wrong!
After hitting the first few twisties (with fully loaded panniers) I was delighted to feel much better stability compared to the 1260. In no situation did I manage to unsettle the bike. The 950 actually has a 19 inch front wheel which usually has a bit of a negative impact on handling. But not on this machine. I actually could not believe this bike had a bigger front wheel. Its handling is absolutely flawless. Its brakes are very powerful yet not too aggressive. The seating position is a bit different from most of its competitors as well. You're seated deep within the bike and your legs are more bent. And I love that. No other travel bikes feels this confidence-inspiring to me when riding faster. I think I needed something like 3 corners to feel at home. And milking the throttle is SO addictive! I just love the noise the Multi makes when hitting a certain rev range!
Its engine is typical-Ducati which means it can't handle low rpms. Not at all actually. And its gearbox is a bit flawed, sometimes it sends you into false neutrals in between the gears. But with these flaws I could live quite well.
On the touring side I was happy enough with the wind protection. The wind does hit your head heavily and loudly but only when you're taller than 185cm. So I am on the lucky side with my 184cm ;) I also rode quite a bit of gravel with it which worked surprisingly well. It is very much OK to handle when standing on the pegs.
So to me this Multistrada 950 does it all! Quick riding, slow riding, long distance riding, gravel roads! A perfect travel machine!

Find the review in the description! ENJOY!
Few years ago I saved in my favourites the Austrian snake that I saw you have ridden on and was just thinking that one day I might cross close to it and will enjoy it. This year I was actually there because I was passing by and slept in the area which was amazing. It was thanks to you because you have put the location and promoted it. Thank you buddey and stay safe!
Fantastic!!
Such a beautiful sound, such a beautiful road...thanks for the ride!!!!
thanks for the comment!
Wow, that's the local road I ride on regularly, I thought it looked familiar. I didn't expect to see it in your video, that's crazy
hahaha that is awesome! It is such a brilliant road!
One of my favorite roads around here. Great riding sir!
thanks Denis
Because of you schaaf, I want to ride at Austria when I'm done with my architecture school. Greetings from Malaysia!!
this is SLovenia though :D :D :D
nice ride my friend, great way for me to start my day. thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it
The best combination: great rider with good bike on great road (Cerknica to Rakitna, Slovenia). Schaaf, najboljši si!
hvala!
O lej ga slovenc
Great video. Looks like exciting roads and I like the way you're giving it the revs. The bike loves being revved and so many online reviews miss this as they're trying to ride the torque.
I also agree about the handling which is something else.
A great bike overall.
Finally someone who knows how to ride a Ducati ;)
If you have one, can you tell me if you had any problems since you have it? And how much mileage ?
@@spicy_rrr9343 no problems and 6,000miles so far. Best bike I've owned in 25 years of motorcycling.
i wish i had one of bike that you've been use it before... so enjoying your videos,
What a Great work!! Nice sir!! 👍👍👍
Thanks 👍
I didn't even realized it wasn't the 1200 (1260) until after watching the video when I read the title...
It seems like it fits your style perfectly, it was very fun to watch, almost as much as riding I bet? 😋 Have fun and ride safe!
thanks Porky! It sure does!
This was the perfect video and review to confirm that I would be content with a mutistrada, and didn't have to buy the aprilia tuono to enjoy riding. Utility, flexibility, and Italian flair, without having to sacrifice the enjoyment of hearing that Italian "symphony". I do feel that nothing sounds as good as the tuono, but I would never take a tuono off road. Thank you for your excellent reviews and rides!
thanks Brian
Your review reflects exactly my experience with this bike! This is what I should have bought instead of my Tiger 800. I test rode a Multistrada 950 and forgot how good it was and I was considering other factors when I made the purchase. Depending on what is available or new in the next few years I will hopefully swap my Tiger for one of these.
Good choice!
Wow! What a road. Well ridden too👍🏍
Thanks ✌️
Hi Schaaf, this seems to be really nice road to ride.
Ride safe and nice work on the videos :)
Thanks a lot!
Aah...!! That's the good stuff. I like the accuracy with which you blip the throttle every time you downshift (not just in this one)....!! Ride safe, ride hard... Cheers buddy!!
quickshifter
thanks Ronald
Freut mich! Danke, Karl!
my favourite road, if its weekend and nice weather, im here :)
Great choice!!
Love your reviews Schaaf, and really miss 1000PS English reviews.
Will you review the SuperSport that has the same engine?

This bike is my way to go. As an Ducati Fan im already own an 848 for a few years now. But the small Multi catched me a long time ago. This bikes feels so "little and light" compared to the big one. I really like to owne one.
It is amazing for sure
That quickshifter sounds so good
yes!
I had the 950S for a week and i found there's couple of issues with it, first was the tendency for the gear to go into neutral especially from gear 5 to 6. And 2ndly, the top end is just a bit lacking however I do love the low end torque. Ducati said they've reduced to clutch plate to improve gear change but I somehow think it just made it worse. 😅
hahaha yea the gearbox indeed isn't at its best ;)
I recently purchased the 950s and agree with your thoughts in the text. I love it. It's a pity the audio dosent reflect the induction noise. My big criticism is for a premium product the mirrors are PANTS. I CANT SEE SHIT .
that's true
It is amazing bro
thanks
Very good!
Thanks Ömer
Intense , loved it ! Is it possible to try the Tracer 900?
unfortunately not! Thanks
Hmmm... Maybe one could do something about raising the revs a bit and low speeds with a sprocket change or a remapping? Cool video
probably
Hi! VFR800 RC79 vs Multistrada 950S. Which one would you choose?
This one has a 19 inch front wheel and it handles better than the 1200 with 17?
This IS my dream bike 😊
good choice!!
Exhilarating
thanks
Good driving
Thanks 👍
Multi + Schaaf + corners = perfect
thanks Johnny
excellent machine!!!!!
It sure is!
Brilliant Video! I have MTS 950s as well and absolutely love it. I noticed you use 1st gear till 70kmh and trail braking, so you don't close throttle in full right? Because my MTS 950s on 1st gear slowing dramatically fast. Maybe it is because you are using sport mode vs mine touring. Can you add a few comments regarding your curve technique on MTS?
Honestly there is not much to explain :) I just enjoy using the bike at its highest power and torque range. That's why I use first gear a lot. I actually don't know if the engine braking is any different between the riding modes. It would make sense but since I only used Sport when riding quicker I actually can't tell, sorry!
@@Schaaf Thanks for your reply. So you trail brake mostly with throttle and still having a little front brake pressure?
@@Vishnjaaa what do you think of it? Did you have any problems with it ? And how many mileage did you do? Looking to buy one this week-end.
@@spicy_rrr9343 It's great, only a bit heavy, but handling is much better than new monster for example. About 5k.
@@Vishnjaaa good to hear ;)
Bro please ride a Honda Forza 750 ( i love a intake sound 😍 )
Haha, nice you went through, Rakitna .... nice. great road, just those stripes which they added on corners are a bit annoying.
but they work well
@@Schaaf untill its wet :) You have to stop by the lake and order Gibanica.
I'm thinking about swapping to a sporty touring/do it all bike (no offroad ambitions) and damn, I think I need to test ride the "little" Multi. Only if it wasn't so expensive... sigh...
I feel you man
@@Schaaf Well, I did it. 4 weeks after the test ride, I bought a red 950 S with the touring package.
Und du bist schuld! ^^
If you had to choose between the 950 and the 1260 which would you go for?
950s
yes
"This Is the Bike" 😎
YES
Please ride a honda xl1000 varadero and record it. Im very curious, im not skilled like you, i want to see what it can do.
ua-cam.com/video/A_lVU5NGIUY/v-deo.html
wow!
thanks!
Just waiting the new Ducati v4 review!!!!
will be an infinite wait probably
😔
hello, how tall are you? I'm 175cm and wondering if i can fit this 950 MTS. I read that 950 is taller than 1260
yes you can
Were you staying in first gear more than typical because its performance in the low revs?
He always rides like that. Using lower gears everywhere. I would also like to know reason why since bike has enough torque and power.
I was going to say, there's another 5 gears in there, I ride on just as twisty roads (west coast of Scotland) on my ktm 1290 superduke gt and only go down to 1st for pulling off from junctions, there's plenty of torque in the multi to get away with 2nd gear in most of the corners....bloody thing sounds like it going to blow up 😅😅🤦♂️🤦♂️
it's actually only necessary in tight hairpins, the Multistrada doesn't work below 2500 rpms. But I enjoy riding like this when I'm riding quicker. In some corners the RPM drop below 4K, even in first gear. The Multi peaks between 7 and 9. And I want to feel the most power and torque possible.
@@Schaaf you wouldn't get it's maximum torque in first gear...but hey its ur show....but ur always going to get comments like this when riding bikes in 1st gear.....maximum torque isn't until the peak rpm.....also I'm not here to say bad things, but I'm a lot older than u and have a lot more experience with bikes than u do....because I've been riding longer...
The 937 Testastretta needs around 4000-5000 to corner well.
I dont mean that you cant corner with 2500-3000 rpm trough a corner with constant gas, you just can feel that it is not 100% smooth.
Upper body close to front, around 5000 rpm and you will have much more fun :).
I dont think, that the engine torque is cutted down by the ECM in first gear with no traction control on. In normal Sport, Touring,... it could be.
Ive always favoured the 950 series of this bike more than the 1260 ... i still dont know why . Maybe its because of the smaller size of the 950's , they probably ride better than the 1260's judging by the way you were chucking this bike round the corners . Otherwise the 1260's are the specsheet kings . Ducati makes the best bikes !
the 950 rides way better in my opinion!
compares with 1200 enduro ? what you think ?
the enduro is better for offroad
Kannst du mir die genauen Orte nennen, bitte.
You should do a really loud bike next
the Multi is loud enough :D
I love that road. Ride it many times every season. There is a video on my channel from same direction.....!
We could meet sometime, when you will be in that area.....!
Cheers mate
nice!
please tell me which place is this, please
Rakitna, Slovenija
How much mileage does this bike gives
no idea
Ride some small capacity bikes plz 😘😘😁😁. Like Yamaha r15 V3 😀😀 btw I have yamaha fz 250

So you like this more than the new S1000XR?
most definitely
@@Schaaf really? wow
cyclists ... never able to travel in single line... anyway, awesome run :-P it's a pleasure to listen the sound of a good and smooth driving
thanks
Tell us about VHC.
ok
Great ride and outstanding bike.. but I really can’t understand why you do use the gear box the way you use it. Really wired way of riding a Ducati-engine bike.
Because the rpms drop down to 4K and this bike peaks between 7K and 9K. It is not necessary but I like to ride my bikes in their strongest areas
@@Schaaf These bikes are SO miserable under 4K. My new 950 S (bought in part due to your opinion on them) definitely likes to rev.

...reine Interressensfrage... wundert mich immer wieder😅
Was macht der da ?
should have hidden the panniers in the forest as well :D
tahaha maybe ;)
Bist du deppert is des a geiles Straßerl!

Is echt da Wahnsinn! Mia ham sowas in Bayern leider nicht so :(

Mühlviertel ist der beste Tipp! Dort findest du sowas auch!! Danke, Stromer!
what is the reason for shifting to first gear ??? :-(
because he pushed the lever down with his foot
because Ducati's don't like low rpm's
+Drzzlt absolute Gold ahahahahaha
change to CNC or Oberon cluth slave, no more flase neutrals!
Ok
I have the 2017 multi and its the same power! I would never ride like this!!!
cool story bro
Hah
not a great sound..
I love it
Gäääääähn.....
Gute Nacht!
Sounds like an overgrown scooter:((
Idiot
hahaha
@@Schaaf You're the first one laughing.. I usually get death stares when I say this about Ducatis... ;))
Riding 60-80kmh on 1st gear quite often... Weird
what's weird to you is fun to me
@@Schaaf I'm trying to choose between africa twin and 950s... I like AT torqy engine and I rode it one weekend - and it's amazing bike. But I can't get 950s for a test drive yet...
Just a tip: You will burn your engine fast the way you're changing the gears ⚙.
this comment is so stupid on so many levels
@@Schaaf really?? I was just trying to warn you before it will leave you stranded somewhere, because that's what will happen eventually if you continue riding like this. The same goes for every brand out there and Just because you can afford a Ducati or anything within that price range, doesn't mean you also know how to make it last, unless of course you don't care much about the maintenance or the repairs expenses because you can simply afford that too. In this case its fine, just do whatever you want, your bike your responsibility 😉 😜. Just be careful though, there's no reason to prove anything to anyone.
@@antisystemicparadise1202 He's not going to "burn his engine" doing a spirited ride on a road. If a motorcycle can't handle this, then what the hell is it for? Just buy a scooter.
Learn English
Don’t see the point with shifting in first gear while riding, you’re not in moto gp buddy
Stfu, buddy
Learn how to ride, than maybe one day you will too
ducati idle at low revs sounds worst than a tractor so we are forced to ride between 3500-5500 rpm 😑😑😑 just to get that vtwin rumble 🙂🙂🙂
+TheTrader66 The Multistrada 950 has peak performance between 7000 and 9000 RPMs. In many corners I drop below 4K, even in first gear. I definitely see the point in using first gear. It is not necessary but it is fun.
@@Schaaf Thanks you
