Anyway, now on to the video. It's nice to look back on old stuff I used to have. Crazy to see it still at least do its best with modern games. It's insane so many games even launch.
The cpu perf increase per generation has REALLLY slowed down. It is crazy.
If you had gotten a cpu in the year 2000, no matter how high end, and you tried to play ANYTHING in 2012, not only couldn't you even launch the game, but you couldn't install the game, and most likely couldn't even install the OS that was supposed to run the game.
Now, you can get what back in 2004 was considered absolutely acceptable performance, on a 12 year old cpu, which is INSANE.
Office pc's can now probably, basically last forever as a consequence. This wasn't the case 20 years ago.

At the end of the pandemic, I sold a fully overclocked FX 8350 (NB, HT, RAM, subtimings, etc) system with an RX 570 4GB for 300€ (at the time, still a good price) to a guy who just wanted to play single player titles. Yes, it got hot, yes it had high power draw but 40-50 FPS in every AAA title at the time. I usually did much better in DX12 and the lower AMD driver overhead really helped too.
I told the guy he can remove the overclock if he wants but it's better to keep it and that it's an older platform that he may want to upgrade in the future - but he was super happy with it last I heard. I was surprised when he told me he was really enjoying Hogwarts Legacy

Tinkering is half the fun with these. My side rig for iracing is an 8350 at stock speeds (but undervolted as far as i reliably can) 280 AIO, 32gb ram (4x8gb @1333 cl8-8-8-20? if i remember right), rx580 red devil, and all the other usual junk, wifi card, ssd, ect ect. It's rock solid. nobody believes it's an fx build when they try it. The logic behind my build was just optimize what it natively can handle and it seems to be just as good/better than some turned up rigs. Runs so much cooler than others with the undervolt so it automatically turbos like 100% of the time anyway. The UPS says when im racing with tier 1 graphics options (default highest) its only pulling about 225W peak, pretty tame.

I fell for the “world’s first eight core desktop cpu” hype when the FX series launched. First pc build was an 8150 and then upgraded to 8350. It would run over 4.6 GHz at stock voltage, I daily’d it at 4.8, stable at 5.2 and benched it as high as 5.6 but it was HOT haha. I paired it with a GTX 780 and other than benchmarks I had no complaints at all. It was a great little cpu at the time.
These days I’m using a 7950X3D and couldn’t be happier but I miss the days of tweaking the FX chips to try and squeeze as much performance as possible out of ‘em.

My FX 8350, also a 2014 batch, was OC'ed to 4.4, even when it likely could go higher, I didn't even increase the Vcore! But my revision was prone to getting hot and shutting down while x.264'ing. I only kept the system for some months! Overclocked to around 4.6/4.8GHZ most of the time, i didnt start noticing how slow it had become right around the time Cyberpunk 2077 came out. I was rocking the 8350 + GTX 960 2GB in 2020 haha. it was bad. upgraded to a used gtx 1070 at some point. somehow i lasted with the FX 8350 + GTX 1070 8GB until 2024.

    • @PineyJustice

CPU progress has not slowed down, the difference is modern hardware is so much faster than required that pulling 200 fps isn't uncommon for the cpus. Games are not increasing in demand, particularly the cpu side like they were 20 years ago.

    • @Samqdf
      @Samqdf 6 місяців тому

@@PineyJustice CPU progress has definitely slowed down. This is a result of the non linear returns that result from shrinking the lithography process for every generation. For example on top of the general diminishing returns the input/output part of CPU dies can't be scaled down to the same level as the other transistors. This is why the trend has been to go for ever increasing amount of cores, it's a form of sideways rather than forward development. This is going to be considerably more of an issue over the next 5 years as well. None of this is even mentioning thermal limits which Intel is already at the limit with. There will be some decent progress still such as AMD going to a different interconnect type between the chiplets for a much reduced latency but overall things are just not going to be as exciting as they used to be.

    • @PineyJustice
      @PineyJustice 6 місяців тому

@@Samqdf It depends what metric you look at, but no, cpu progress has most definitely not slowed down. I own both a 7950x and a 5950x, for gaming the 7950x is only what, 20-30% faster, but for tasks like video export, shader compile, decompression/compression and lots of other tasks the 7950x can be 50-100% faster. And that's comparing a 2 year old cpu to a 3.5 year old cpu. Zen 5 is coming in just a few months and it's looking like huge gains once again. The only cpu generation not getting much progress was 13900k to 14900k, because they're both basically 12900ks with more OC.

All you AMD FX8350 testers are thinking 100% wrong!
Yes it is a 12 year old CPU. This generation only has PCI-e 2.0, while 1000 series GPUs like the GTX1060 require PCI-e 3.0.
PCI-e 2.0 means that you can never use 100% of GPU power!
FX8350 is also a bottleneck and you should turn off GPU hardware acceleration!
But think of this in a different way! It's not all about gaming all the time!
You can buy less good computers, laptops nowadays that are worse than the amd FX8350!
The AMD FX8350 is a super good CPU. for everything else but not new games and heavier video editing.
I run an FX8350 in my main computer. I don't play games and I don't video edit. Windows 11 is very responsive and starts up quickly with SSD.
What AMD should have done with the FX8350 was to have 8 processor cores that had their own FSB. 8 pcs. communication roads instead of only 4. The FX8350 can only receive 4 data streams at once.
    correct me if i'm wrong.
    I have.
    800w power supply.
    16GB memory.

You didn't set this up right. The motherboard, memory and OC are all sub par. You need to super-tune this. I own an FX 8350 and a 9590 water cooled. I have both a 990x and a Sabertooth 990FX and I can get the chip to 5 Ghz with a 5.2 Ghz Turbo core with a 300 watt TDP cooler. I run 32GB DDR3 2400 or 16GB DDR3 2133. Fun facts: After OCing everything including the memory you can get the single core IPC of a Sandy bridge i5 2500 with the Multi core of an i7 4770. That in itself would have given you about ~15-20% more frames than you got here and would have smoothed out the frame time graph significantly. I can see you didn't go down the all out trail. Considering this processor is old enough to be cheap to build the best you could from it, it's worth it for a review like this. One last fun thing to do, drop a line in your bios to boot from a PCIe card and install an NVMe on it. Sure, it's slower than 3.0, 4.0 and 5.0 but it's still faster than a standard SSD on SATA6.

Thank you once again for all of the support 😃🤗
Glad you enjoy the videos! Gotcha, it took like 10-15 minutes to load the shaders to 6%, then I clicked restart, I'd need to spend like an hour waiting I guess hahaha

I still have my fx8350 paired with a 1060 6gb with 16gbs DDR3 ram and 1tb SSD. It actually "runs" pretty much everything I want In 1080p at 60ish fps. Lot of good games can run smoothly on this setup despite the age.

I found this CPU open box at a Goodwill for $10 once. Best deal ever. It was listed for $20 but it was a half off Saturday. Performance to dollar ratio is insane.

Reallly cool to see it stretched in modern games with a fast GPU. :D These chips are interesting. Not to use but because of their rather unique design.
They made use of "Clustered Multithreading" which is a technology in which some parts of a traditional CPU core are present for each thread but other parts are shared between two threads.
In that sense their are neither a 4 core nor an 8 core compared to modern CPUs.
Personally suspect that how software has been designed to use a CPU can have a big impact on what the FX8350 can deliver, however, I am not an expert on this, I could be wrong. This might also be why some modern games run alright-ish and others barely.

Thanks for making me feel better about my skills as a Helldivers 2 player. I get that you're just doing a demo for your video, but you should still be using the dive key to help you dodge the hoard! Watching you play this game was frustrating.

why would he? hes testing with it not actually using it; his main cpu is definitely leagues better than this one.

    Very interesting.
Would have fared a bit better paired with a Radeon GPU due to the more efficient drivers.

My backup system is an fx-8370 with a Radeon RX 580. They are almost perfectly balanced to each other.
So, I'd say the 1050ti (at less then half the RX 580) is actually holding it back.
