Interesting that your first book was the first printing of Arthur C. Clarkes 'The Nine Billion Names of God'. Ballantines have a number of first paperback prints. I agree that early Ballantines are a step up in quality when compared with other paperbacks of the period. The great cover art by Richard Powers in the 1950s and early 1960s really sets this group of books apart. I really like his cover for 'The Trouble with Lichen'.

Thanks Richard, totally agree with you. These have a distinct look, not just the SF. Yep, The Trouble With Lichen is another great one. Hoping to get more of these soon🙂

Richard Powers is the iconic mid-century SF artist IMO. Love his use of abstraction.

A great artist. He certainly gave these Ballantine SF books a destinctive look.

Wonderful viewing Jules. I was particularly taken by the 50s books - just beautiful. I'm a big, big fan of Richard Powers so it was great to see those covers because his art is so surreal and distinctive. I found a web site dedicated to him a few days back and was astonished to find that he did over 700 book covers. I was under the misapprehension that he only did a few here and there. Great stuff. 👌

Thanks Kenny, I shall have to check that website out! He's definitely a destinctive artist and the covers are great!

*Martha Foley* edited the _Best American_ series from 1941 until her death in 1977, which I believe is the record for most annual 'best of the year' volumes consecutively edited by the same person. More than Gardner Dozois, Ellen Datlow or Stephen Jones. From 1978 the _Best American_ series has had a different 'Guest editor' each year (with an overall 'series editor' attached). The series began in 1915 - come next year that's 110 years! 🤯 Now _that_ is a record! 😱
And, as Richard commented, those SF Ballantines are just pure class... 🥰

Great information Paul. Quite the record there. I'd really like to find the years I'm missing in Ballentine . I've looked at the later editions and the design varies immensely over the decades. Only to be expected I suppose. Richard Powers certainly have the SF titles a really distinctive look.

Lovely. Editions from before my 'collecting period', but I can see the appeal. Ballantine are so important in the history of the paperback, as you know, even influencing Penguin- quite something!

Jules, great group if early Ballantines, such lovely books and they look in superb condition! I do not find them always so nice here in US.

One of my fave publishers! Why do some books have an “F” before the book number and others have the letter “K” after the number? I’d love to see some of the 70’s Chandler books from Ballantine with the Tom Adams covers! I bought all those new when they came out. ❤

Thanks Glen, I've not figured out the letter prefixes yet but I'm looking into it. I suspect it down to genre of book rather than price.

Really enjoyed this video, and your channel overall. A great selection of vintage Ballantines you've got there. I'll have to dig through my meager vintage SF paperback collection and see if I have any. I know I have a half-dozen of their "Best of" author collections from the late '70s. Keep up the great work!

    • @JulesBurt

Thanks Jeff! Those 70's best of collections are excellent. I've a small handful myself. Certainly a great series to put together. The vintage SF is on the whole quite cheap and copies are plentiful online. Start collecting them🙂

'The Outward Urge' is a great book - following different generations of a family and their involvement in Mankind reaching out into Space :-) have a Penguin copy of that :-)

The Penguin editions are great and look uniform. I like collecting these USA ones as they are so different to the UK eds. Just a shame Ballentine didn't publish Triffids.

That brings back memories. I used to have quite a few of those Ballantine sci fi novels, but gave them away years ago. Your video made me wish I still had them! ;-)

Nice - not 'pre - lude' to Space but 'perl-ude' to space :-) I have a Four Square edition of that (thought it's falling apart)

I'm trying to collect Anthony Burgess in Ballantine. Hard to get here in the UK unless you want to pay inflated postage costs on eBay.

    • @JulesBurt
      @JulesBurt  4 місяці тому

I bet, I can't recall ever coming across a USA edition here.

it seems a bit easier to collect American paperbacks in the UK rather than the other way round - if I tried to collect all the Panther Lovecrafts over here I'd be busted in days.

    • @JulesBurt

You're not wrong, although I do quite well getting USA paperbacks sent in bulk and buying them one at a time and stored with a friend.
