Bon Jovi - It's My Life - ISOLATED VOCALS - Analysis and Singing Lesson
“It’s My Life” was Bon Jovi’s first release in over 5 years and in the lyrics the band makes a blast from the past with a reference to Tommy and Gina who were the subject of “Livin’ On A Prayer” in 1986.
Can you think of any other examples of a song where a band made a past reference to another song they had previously written? If so let me know in the comments!
As we continue with this Bon Jovi-a-thon, the more I look at Jon’s stuff the more I realize the genius that went into both his songwriting and the production which we’ll explore in more detail.
I’ll also walk you guys through how to get that same sound without having to pinch and squeeze but instead using good open throat technique and adding distortion.
Also check out the version I did of the song here:

And here is the isolated vocal video I did to "Livin' On A Prayer":

We mustn't forget how much Sambora's guitar lines contributed to the success of this song. The talk box and actually really simple verse riff made it iconic like Living on a prayer.
Indeed.
Not to mention Richies amazing backing vocals.
@@kentamplin Woah woah
Those backing vocals are immaculate
Great analysis, Ken! Crush is the album where a lot of fans really started to notice something different in Jon's voice. In my opinion, his range, tone, and pitch peaked somewhere in between Blaze Of Glory and These Days. His vocals on Keep the Faith (album) are very powerful and is the greatest extent of his Rock N' Roll sound before the band started to experiment with other genres.
Thanks for the thoughts!
@@kentamplin Once you lose a bit of range, is it possible to have it back ?
@@flonoiisana4647 You might be able to regain some.
@@kentamplin I have hope then. Do I have to take a full course with you or it could be something regarding that?
It's so crazy how time flies. We're talking about "It's my life" as Bon Jovi's earlier stuff now..
This song came out in 2000, and it’s still great
Sure is!
I love how this song starts🎸🕺Adore Bon Jovi 🙉👏😍
Just love this bon jovi song. Back in those days as i remember, if ever the DJ needs to get the crowd to fill the dance floor n kick it up a notch, he wd turn to 4 songs. Teen spirit, nirvana; enter sandman, metallica; sweet child o mine, gnr ..... and its my life, bon jovi. Guaranteed to get the crowd going. Dance floor or at bon jovis concert, head bang till neck gets all sore. Sore, but it was worth it. 🤘. And interesting analysis.
Haha! That's rock n roll!
Always amazes me how different “naked vocals” sounds. Great vid Ken Thanks. X
Thank you, Natalie!
This series is a true contribution to the world of singing that will be dearly remembered and cherished. ✌
So happy to here that!
I forgot about this one this song always loved to hear bon jovi sing this one great song bon jovi voice rocks on this one love his techniques and raspyness in his rocking voice it totally rocks and he nails it bon jovi rocks rock on bon jovi👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Thanks Cade!
Your welcome Ken
From Runaway in 1981 to Slippery When Wet and beyond, he had 20-30 top ten songs, he was at venue to venue to venue for decades especially early in the 80s and 90s ... this is what happened to his voice, he's only human, even taking care of it, warm-ups, etc, it will go... it's the drawback of Metal, Rock after a decade or so... Tom Keifer, Vince Neil, hell even James Hetfield... John has done it all but his love for the fans and his music keeps him going... the man is a legend
Rock on!
Jon was great, but he has had 10 top ten billboard hits. And here he was only 38 years old. Just think his technique was a bit flawed. Like Brian Johnson of AC/DC, you can only do it for so long. But man the vocals on Runaway, they are some of the best rock vocals ever put to tape.
I never noticed back in the day but you can definitely hear quite a bit of his 2021 voice in there. They always had lots of great harmonies. These days, it's pretty much all harmonies. So many great songs out of them in the 80s and 90s.
Thanks for listening, Scott!
The big choir in the chorus allways gives me chills.
Thank you Ken.. Your time and dedication to provide us with all these cool videos is much appreciated!!
My pleasure!
Enjoying this series. Thanks Ken!
Glad to hear it!
Iconic song, thanks for this breakdown
My pleasure, Tyler!
Really enjoying these Bon Jovi isolated vocals Ken. Thanks for posting and please keep them coming
Glad you enjoy them!
Great as always! Well I am amazed how awesome your voice sounds when casually demonstrating things while explaining. Only the best can do that.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Oooooh a fave of mine!
It's a good one!
@@kentamplin Even better live, well when you get Bon Jovi on a good day.
Jon Bon Jovi sounds awesome.
Thanks for Your analysis. Always enjoyable and informative. Love Bon Jovi❤

IT'S MY LIFE❤️❤️❤️
Yes it is, maong!
Thank You for doing these Ken! I can sit here for hours listening to you speak about these songs and give these tutorials. you truly come across as a great guy and a man who cares about his craft!
I appreciate that, Eric! Rock on!
Beautiful!! Amazing and delicious analysis! Thanks!
My pleasure!
Its such a joy to watch this breakdowns and reviews... keep it rocking sir \m/
More to come!
You really should check out Richie Samboras song “Father Time” it’s an amazing tune and you should analyse the vocals
Will do, Liam!
Yay!!!
That whole album is absolutely amazing!
Richie is a great singer.
@@kentamplin Highly recommend you check out Sambora’s “The Answer”… Its a lyrical masterpiece!.. one of his best.
And in context of his ‘body of work’ thats saying something…
I really enjoyed hearing your comments on Jon’s voice and hearing your versions as well. You sounded great.
Thank you Ken for this one! Your remarks are really interesting. I enjoyed it as usual. I love Jon Bon Jovi. His voice has changed because of many factors you have talked about recently but I still like the way he sounds for example in Blood in The Water. Please analyse this song or the older stuff such as Santa Fe, I'll Be There For You or Something to Believe In or These Days, please. Thank you Ken! You are great! Rock on!
Rock on, IIo!
thanks for always featured bonjovi

Jon is a great all around performer. I love Jon and Bon Jovi. Thanks for doing a review of this song.
MY pleasure!
Cheiron loved its backing choirs!
Awesome, great.. 👌👌👌
GREAT analysis, for one of the GREATEST songs of the last 25 years. Thanks Ken ;)
My pleasure!
Recently discovered your vids and loving them!!
Happy to hear that, Graeme!
U r doing a great job for new singers. Great lessons. Thanks 🙏

Bon Jovi love of my childhood, It's My Life song of going to school)
Awesome. Fin FF!
Love in the series, keep it coming. Yes, what you say about how John‘s voice has changed, when you listen to all this isolated stuff, it really pops out at you.
Thanks for listening!
I loved your cover of this song dude! 🤘💪🔥
I appreciate that, Craig!
This track seems so simple yet so sonically pleasing.
Great video Ken!
I love your positive vibes. Really big fan!
Wow! Thank you!
Always great Master!
Thank you! Cheers!
Hey Ken! Noticed you are really getting close to that 1M mark! So awesome! Just checked out your cover again. You rocked it just like I remembered. Like I told you before, with you and Jon it's all about the hair! Lol! Great job!😎
Thanks, Jeff!
@@kentamplin My pleasure. 😎
Great review Ken, I never noticed the harmonies he does behind the lead vox. Good stuff!
Thanks!
Really enjoyed, good analysis, Thanks Ken
My pleasure.
Thanks for doing bon Jovi
Sure thing!
My favorite from Jon Bon Jovi. Fun fact, Frank Sinatra was in fact Jon's great uncle. An awesome family tribute :)
Nice!
Not true about Sinatra.
Right. In Jersey many people with Italian roots have a lot of "uncles" and "aunts" 😁
Gotta love the 'Jersey' style... Bruce Springsteen and Jon Bon Jovi both had 'it'. Add others like Frank Sinatra, Frankie Valli, Tony Bennett, Paul Simon, and many more too...
Awesome video!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks for the quick response. Being an east coast girl, loving this Jon Bon Jovi tutorial.
You are so welcome!
Another great video... got here early this time hehe
You did! 🏆🏆🏆
Your amazing ken it's your UA-cam that gives me so much encouragement to carry on perfecting my voice
So happy to hear that, AquariusStarChild!
Whatever is happening to Jon's voice (old age whatever) the dude can write a song!
He certainly can!
Absolutely !
Hey Ken, I really enjoyed this analysis! As Im listening more and more JBJ I discover his voice changes. He still got his killer voice in the early '90s but I think around 1997 something changed, his voice became a little pale and hoarse. Maybe because of aging and smoking. And later, around 2003-2004 he began to sing more nasal, at live concerts at least.
I'd be interested in a comparison analysis video, something like: JBJ studio and live voice analysis, that would be cool!
Great suggestion, Sicambria!
The first time I seen Bon Jovi was for 7800 tour. They opened for Ratt!
Great memory! Rock on!
Hey Ken, since you are doing Jon Bon Jovi maybe you can do some Richie Sambora. That's a soulful voice and he added so much to the Bon Jovi sound. Thanks for the great videos!!
Noted!
Another great video. Love seeing you cover so much Bon Jovi. It would be cool for you to cover Born to Be My Baby since that's one of Jon's tracks where he goes a bit deeper in his voice and isn't that high.
Glad you enjoyed it, Taylor!
Great song! I love the bvgs!
Thanks for listening, Kofijeff!
Thanks Ken
its very interesting to hear your analysis on Jon voice from 80 to '00 and hear what is changed in his voice during those years. I hope you will continue to analysis his voice in later years
Glad you enjoyed it
If I could point to ONE song that turned my favorite style of music towards rock, it would be this song. Therefore, even though I don't sing myself (unless alone in the car obviously) or know anything about the makings/analytics of music, I really enjoyed this video. Thank you!
Also nice to see I'm not the only doing the double drum moves before the first chorus. LOL
Awesome!
Aw I love this song. Thanks Ken. Hope you and the family are keeping safe 💖🤟🏻
Also, I very much appreciate the isolated vocals and analysis and how you show it can be applied to real singers. Cheers 🤟🏻
All is well! Thank you, Flabby!
That was great! You're a swiss army knife of vocals!
Haha!
Thx Ken for doing this!, George
You're welcome!
Great backing vocals in that song 😊❤
I'm enjoying the BJ series. Your version is fantastic! 🔨 🔥
Glad you like them!
Hey Ken! 👋 Congrats on the almost mil subs! 😃
How about some Blind Melon? Change or No Rain would be awesome! 👌
Great suggestion!
Great song! I think this album shows that his voice is starting to deteriorate. He is struggling on some parts of the song. But still a great song, catchy tune, great musicianship too. Thanks a lot sir Ken for this series.
But what a incredible songwriter!!
Absolutely!
I hope you hit that million mark ... good luck ken
Appreciate that, Paul!
Awesome
Glad you enjoyed it!
I love your shirt so much hahahahahhahah
Hey Ken, love this song so much!
I don't know all Bon's songs, so I have a some favourites! ☺️
Nelly xx :)

Hi Ken! Love your videos. You have covered some amazing bands and great songs and love what you have to say. You keep it real! I haven’t seen anything on Meatloaf…… I am extremely curious to get your take on him. Hope you can do it. Keep on rocking my friend!
Thanks for the suggestion!
Bon Jovi is now strugglin a lots in his voice as Ken rightly said. Let even Bon realizes he is in a wrong path of voice. Absolutely Bon Jovi nids tutorial to Ken. Ken u r genius.
Rock on, Maximas!
Great job Ken. I'm still praying for a Kansas-a-thon off their early (1st 6) albums when Steve and Robby were at their peaks vocally. Thanks brother.
We'll see...
I saw him 2 years ago live and He had voice issues, but also Timing issues. But He improved a little bit since covid.
Hope he enjoyed some rest.
Also enjoying this series! I'm a Bon Jovi fan. Please make a Richie Sambora analysis!!!
I might!
👽 BEAUTIFUL 🤘🎸🎶❤️
Thanks for watching!
I remember back when MTV played music yet, and I watched TRL. This song was vying for NSYNC's Bye Bye Bye #1 spot. Two kind of badass songs next to each other. What with NSYNC's video, with Kim Smith and the red Dodge Viper stunt driving.
Cool!
The back up vocals also makes it sound bigger not slamming him at all big Jon fan just pointing out what I hear
Great ken!
Thanks, David!
Frankly spoken Ken.🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Thanks, Williams!
@@kentamplin you are welcome.
i'm feeling the bro love for bon jovi. i approve!
Awesome! Thank you!
Epic
Thanks for watching, Erik!
" Hi Welcome back I'm Ken Tamplin The guy with the slaying voice and the coolest shirts in America"
😄
Please do some guns n roses in the future in your isolated vocal series. Its very interesting and you nearly covered all of the big rockstars from freddy mercury to jon bon jovi to david coverdale etc. but axl rose is still missing and it would be awesome to hear his isolated vocals :)
Thanks for the suggestion, Tasty Cappuccino!
Thanks Mr Ken Tamplin.
Great series Ken, thanks! If you're considering analyzing some more Bon Jovi songs, how about Lets Make It Baby? This song is unique in so many aspects, and certainly a showcase for Jon's exceptional vocal skills back then.
Thanks for the suggestion!
I think he seems to get alot of help and support from the rest of the band on the higher Stuff nowadays especially during the chorus not knocking it cause his singing is one of my favorites
Thanks for the thoughts!
Im a big fan of "Bed of Roses" (would love to hear this one done too Ken!) And, I listened to the original, and his recent concert versions back to back - it is sad to see this step down. I completely understand, Whitney had the same problem as have many others. Ove your excellent suggestions and breakdowns etc... Ken. Great testimony too my brother!
Thanks for the visit!
Thank you for another Bon Jovi Video. Could you also do a video of one of his 90's tunes from these days or keep the faith? would be cool.
I'm glad you're enjoying the series, Julian!
Next song, "i'll be there for you" by bonjovi plss ken...!! I'll be so thrilled to see you with this song..
Thanks for the suggestion!
The harmonies on that are perfection. Jon and Richie together are amazing.
I hope you hit a million subs soon! Do you have anything special planned for when you do?
It's exciting. I'm trying to cook something up.
I like your David Coverdalesck way you did this song
Thanks, Jett 1974!
Notice the difference?
Through most of the song, he's kinda strong, and kinda, like, belting it out, and, like, really raspy, but then, like, on the bridge, it's like softer, and airier, on the word "life", so I like the difference between the verses and choruses and the bridge, like, it's great!
Such an awesome song, and i would have never guessed that the band did so much for the song with the drums and guitars and etc. But none the less, still a great tune, that has withstood the test of time as well in my opinion. :)
It is a great tune!
Bon Jovi was great in his hey day. In all honesty, I believe he should have hung it up 10 years ago. His voice has just gone down hill and now sounds completely like s"it. There, I said it.
You said it. Thanks for the 2 cents.
Hey Ken, love the Bon Jovi series..
You reckon you could rebuild JBJ’s voice to a level thats bearable live?…
It saddens me to say this, but these days he sounds as bad as me singing in my car🙉
I'd sure like to try!
@@kentamplin I guess joiac1's (and mine) question is, if in your opinion, Jon's voice would be solvable with the proper vocal training. What do you think?
@@tadejsusta I've never personally evaluated him. At this point it would only be speculation.
@@kentamplin SERIOUSLY mate you should reach-out to JBJ and offer your expertise!!.. he needs it… we the fans need it too!
@@joviac1435 John is already working with someone for sure, you can hear that in latest live recordings.
👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Thanks for listening.
