What a legend. I reckon that Lu got Rahimoved in Rio 2016 was actually a good thing in some ways. If Lu won gold in Rio at the age of 32, he probably would have retired as it was Lu's plan. So big thanks to Rahimov for giving us five years sensational performance from Lu. And boy oh boy how do I wish Lu to carry on and compete in Paris as a 40-year-old. But at the same time, I really wish him to retire and spend more time with his family and start his career in weightlifting as a coach.
With what we've seen from Lu with his family he definitely looks like he cherishes those breaks from training so he could see his little girls. And when his youngest went to the backstage to hug him after the 207kg WR I could tell that meant more to him than the gold medal
Its still unclear wether he's retired or not but IMO the extra 8kg in the 89kg weightclass is gonna give him more longevity cuz it'll allow him to pack more healthy weight as opposed to staying close to 81kg shredded year round. He might not be as competitive but its probably the more forgiving weightclass for his age.
He's gonna be in his 40s next olympic..if he continues, maybe he gonna have hard time competing with the young athletes.. but if he still can win again, I'm not surprised..because he is the GOAT!!!
But remember that his records in 77, the lighter category, still have not been exceeded by anyone in the heavier 81. So in my mind he never “lost” any records. Heavier lift with lighter bodyweight is unambiguously more impressive. Neither Ehab’s nor Li’s lift in 81 beats Lu’s snatch record in 77.
I have never lifter but got into watching videos and working out a bit just this year. Luckily I knew about lu enough to take the time to watch him this Olympics and it was legitematly impressive above what the others did even though I couldn’t actually understand how difficult the lifts were.
